This is not the best diagram (I drew this in like. 10 minutes) but bear with me on this.

So the SmartBoard itself consists of:

projector (it may hang from the ceiling or just be connected to the board)

touch board (not really a screen. Is where the normal chalkboard / whiteboard would be)

shelf for the accessories (note: it has buttons, placed exactly where the accessories should be placed)

More buttons (this is where the on / off button of the device is, as well as some buttons that nobody really uses)

The accessories include:

4 styluses (they're typically colour-coded: red, blue, green, and black)

An "eraser" (I keep putting this in quotes because it's just a piece of plastic shaped like an eraser. In fact none of the accessories actually do anything. Give me a second to elaborate.)

Okay. So! Some key things to know about these things if you haven't dealt with one yet:

The accessories don't really have any meaningful tech inside them. In other words, if they went missing, you could replace them with normal board erasers and markers.

However! If you do this, keep the cap of the real markers on. These boards don't get cleaned as easily as whiteboards. Also the school's tech expert person will be very upset. Don't risk it.

Also, it means you should probably memorize which thing goes where on the shelf. The board doesn't know that you are holding the "blue" stylus, but it does know that nothing is currently pressing down the button in the "red stylus" space of the shelf. That's why the shelf has buttons. And that's why it seems like the blue stylus is drawing in red.

So with this thing, you can basically turn any computer slideshow into an interactive thing, sort of like of your old whiteboard became a touch-screen. But it's not! It works via projector.

The projector thing is very important, because it means you can't just hide parts of the screen (like, for example, a math problem answer) with your hand or real paper. It will just project onto your hand or the paper now. (What you gotta do is find a way to hide the answer in the slideshow itself when you are making it on the computer.)

Sometimes the board needs calibrating, because the pen marks will show up an inch or 2 away from where you are actually touching the board. While it's good to calibrate once in a while, you can also just sort of go with the flow. Pen marks showing up 3 centimeters lower than expected? Write 3 centimeters higher than you actually want to, and it'll cancel things out.

Also: the board isn't quite built physically like a phone / tablet touchscreen either. You'll need to press down a bit, instead of just lightly tapping the board or gliding the stylus across the board

Fun fact: sometimes, if you want to erase a bunch of stuff at once, you can just pick the eraser tool, circle all of the stuff you want to erase, then tap the middle of the circle.

And yeah. That's how a SmartBoard works. It's probably cheaper and a lot more intuitive to just have a projector point at a normal whiteboard and use normal markers and erasers. But at least now you know a few tips for how to deal with these things.

Today was the first day teaching at the actual school!

All of September and October we held lessons at the university across the street (the school still wasn't finished) with some of the lessons needing to be online because of minimal space. I mostly felt bad for the children and teens because they didn't have a good environment to study in. It was far too chaotic, and we didn't even have actual rooms, so you could constantly hear everyone else.

Some students have already been expelled, while others have just recently been brought in. It's been such a crazy past few months, this being just one of many factors to my stress. However, today went relatively well!

The school is gorgeous, my colleagues are fantastic, and the food is delicious (a canteen and 2 cafes 😭). They gave us a meal card with a set amount for any kind of food and drink we want during the day, which honestly feels like such a luxury. I love it.

Grundschultechnik, Teil 1

Ich bin bei der ersten Elternversammlung des frisch eingeschulten Sohns. Ich sitze also im Klassenzimmer einer Berliner Grundschule, die als ihre Schwerpunkte digitale Medien und Sport nennt.

Folglich hängt an der Wand auch keine Schiefertafel mehr, sondern ein Whiteboard mit einem Beamer. Unter anderem demonstriert uns die Lehrerin, wie Lerninhalte aus der Schreib- und Lesefibel auch auf diesem Board digital bearbeitet werden können.

Passende Inhalte zu einer Buchseite können dargestellt werden, und man kann mit Stiften darin herum malen beziehungsweise das Gemalte auch wieder löschen. Die Lehrerin kann dabei auch seitlich an ihrem Schreibtisch sitzen und hat dort einen Bildschirmarbeitsplatz, an dem sie offenbar dasselbe sieht, wie wir auf dem Board.

Einmal möchte uns die Lehrerin eine bestimmte Seite zeigen und muss dazu einen ganzen Stapel von Fenstern nacheinander wegklicken. Ich fühle mich direkt an meinen Arbeitsalltag erinnert und frage mich, ob das auch einmal der Arbeitsalltag meines Sohnes sein wird.
