Koh Lipe, Thailand
Day 150  - Penang to Koh Lipe, Thailand
I woke up early in the morning to make my way to the ferry terminal, embarking on a boat heading north to Langkawi, then onwards to Thailand. The guesthouse’s night manager was just getting off his shift as I checked out, and kindly gave me a ride to port on the back of his scooter. The cool morning air was hazy and smoky, with remnants of firecrackers strewn about the street from the Chinese New Years celebrations the night before.

Crossing the Border by Ferry!
We headed north for about 3 hours along the straights of Malacca before our ferry pulled into port at Langkawi, a picturesque archipelago in the Andaman Sea, made up of over 100 different islands. Kuah Jetty on Langkawi was abuzz with travellers streaming in every direction, and it took me awhile to locate passport control to be cleared in advance to leave Malaysia by sea. This was only the second time I have ever crossed a border by water, and it was quite a different feeling! In a small office on the second floor of the ferry terminal, I had to surrender my passport for about an hour while I waited in a small holding area packed with other passengers. When it came time for our ferry ride, our passports were returned and we were led through the centre of the ferry terminal in single file, lest we be lost enroute to our boat! The ferry ride itself was also a bit strange – an enclosed space, with the windows painted over so we could not see outside for the final 2 hours to Koh Lipe.

First Sight of Koh Lipe
Stepping into the afternoon sunshine upon on our arrival to Koh Lipe, the long day of travel was immediately worth it, as we had arrived to tropical paradise. Thailand’s southernmost island, Koh Lipe is very small and can easily be walked from one end to the other. It is also so tiny that it doesn’t have a pier! Our ferry anchored offshore as we awaited Thai long-tail boats to putt up alongside us, transporting passengers across the turquoise shallows to shore.

After a chaotic wave of beachside customs (in bare feet!), my passport was stamped, and I was officially in Thailand! Hitching up my pack, I meandered along Pattaya Beach and through the walking street, quickly arriving at Bloom Café and Hostel, my home for the next 4 nights. After checking in and changing into a more heat-friendly outfit, I began to wander the laneways, looking for a bite to eat among the food stalls and cafes. Koh Lipe is very pedestrian friendly, with no cars, and only a few motorbikes used for deliveries and luggage. It was immediately a refreshing change of pace. I grabbed a large fresh fruit smoothie and wandered along Pattaya Beach, hundreds of brightly coloured long-tail boats bobbing just offshore. As the sun began to go down, I stopped for a bite to eat at one of the beachside cafes under a canopy of swaying palms, feeling completely relaxed.

Day 151 – Koh Lipe
I woke early in the morning on my first full day in Koh Lipe, walking the short distance to Sunrise Beach to watch the day break. Shop owners and vendors were already up and about in the near-dark, swiftly organizing wares in their stands, from fresh tropical fruit and handicrafts, to Thai pants and freshly caught fish.

As the hazy, pink sun rose over the Andaman Sea, the humidity and heat quickly intensified.  I walked along the length of the beach, watching hundreds of moored longtail boats cast long shadows across the rippled sand.  These traditional boats have become synonymous with travel to Thailand, and are much photographed due to their iconic wooden frame, brightly painted hulls, and decorations of garlands, ribbons and flowers on the prow.

Historically these boats were made entirely by hand, with the craft passed down from generation to generation. In Thailand, there is a widespread belief that spirits are found throughout all aspects of life, and this is no exception with the longtail boats. There is a belief that every tree has a guardian spirit, and when it was cut down to build the boat, the spirit continues to live in the body of the boat and protect it.  There is also a belief in a water spirits and a spiritual goddess of boats. Thus, all of the decorative ribbons, garlands and flowers on the boat prows are intended to pay honour and respect to these spirits, who in turn ensure safe voyage and prosperous fishing. As I meandered along the beach, there was something mesmerizing about watching these decorative sashes and garlands sway in the morning breeze. As the island began to wake up, the calm of the sunrise was replaced by the whir of longtail engines getting started. Most of these boats are powered by converted car engines, attached to a 2-meter “tail” with a propeller at the end. Standing at the stern of the boat, captains pull the motor from side to side, manoeuvring their boats over the shallow coral reef.

I returned my guesthouse and tucked into a delicious smoothie acai bowl, before heading out to the beach for the day, with not a plan in the world aside from some reading and R&R, as I was planning to go diving for the following two days. I was incredibly grateful for such a perfect day in paradise.

Day 152-153 – Diving on Koh Lipe
I spent the following two days in Koh Lipe scuba diving with Adang Sea Divers. Thailand had been a place where I had wanted to go for diving for years – and it did not disappoint! Just beneath the turquoise waters offshore was an incredible rainbow of coral, home to over 25% of the world’s tropical fish! I was glad to have had such thorough training in Australia a few months earlier, as my experience diving in Thailand was much more informal, where they expected me to already know what I was doing!

The first day of diving, my guide Max took me on my first drift dive around the nearby island of Koh Yang. This was much more challenging for me than I expected, as I was unused to the currents and kept automatically kicking my flippers. The result was me using up my oxygen very quickly – to the point where I needed to use Max’s secondary respirator so I didn’t run out of air. Given that we were 16 m underwater, the situation in and of itself also made me breathe harder! I was very thankful for all of the emergency underwater drills I had recently done in my SSI course, as I was able to switch respirators underwater without a hitch. Our second dive at Pattaya Corner was much better, as I practiced breathing more slowly and regularly, maintaining my depth, and relaxing my body as the tidal currents moved us along the wall of coral. Max later told me that the tides were particularly strong as we were nearing the full moon! On this day, a few cool underwater creatures we saw were: blue dragon nudibranch, sea slugs, and cleaner shrimp. 
On my second day of diving, I went out with Becky, a Brit who had permanently relocated to Thailand. Since I had gotten my “sea legs” and comfort back the previous day, I enjoyed myself more on this day’s dive, and appreciated the sealife and incredible coral around me more. On our two dives at Steps and Koh Talu, we were lucky enough to see an incredible range of sealife: Cuddlefish, Seahorses (one of which was pregnant!), a Moray Eel, Dragonfish, Gorgonian Fan corals, Barrel Sponge corals, Bubble Coral, reef crabs, more nudibranches, Coral Cat Sharks, and Durban Dancing Shrimp. It was an absolutely incredible day, and I was in complete awe of tall the underwater life I had seen.  On our boat ride back to Koh Lipe, we saw some local fisherman, using an unusual technique to fish – while using a barrel of sand to weigh them down, they would dive off the edge of a boat, holding onto a long hose for oxygen as they fished, or gathered other seafood from the ocean floor.

On my final evening, I picked up delicious Thai takeout at a local stall, and walked over to Sunset beach to catch the final rays of sun over the Andaman Sea. Heading back to my guesthouse, I crashed almost immediately – happily exhausted after the past 2 days of diving!

We visited Krakow for 5 days in February-March 2019, and completely fell in love with the city and sights. 
Today I’ll detail some of our favourite places and activities, to help you make the most of your time in Krakow. Like many cities, everything is within walking distance and relatively central, meaning you can cram in as much as possible.
Let’s start with the Old Town Square, known as Rynek Glowny. This is one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe, and dates back to the 13th century. It’s no surprise how old the square is, as the buildings and town hall are beautifully designed and very grand. Surrounded by bars and restaurants, this is the hub for nightlife and activity, as are the streets leading to the square itself. You can catch a ride on a horse & cart through the old town, or gaze in awe at St Mary’s Bascilla, which rises above and towers over the square.

We stayed in Hotel Campanile within the old town, less than 5 minutes walk to the main square. This was on a small side street, with lots of pubs, bars and restaurants. 
Surrounding the old town is Planty Park, one of the largest city parks in Krakow. It is a green belt of grass and trees surrounding the Old Town of Krakow, and was established in place of medieval walls in the 1800’s. It’s easy to know if you’re leaving the old town or still within it, depending on whether you have crossed through the park. 
In 1978, Wawel castle was declared as a world heritage site, and you need to see it for yourself to appreciate the beauty of the castle grounds. Take a walk up Wawel hill and spend some time within the grounds. Tours are available through independent companies, but would only be beneficial if you are into the history of the grounds.

Just down the hill on the bank of the Vistula River you will find the Dragon of Wawel Hill, known in Polish as Smok Wawelski. The Wawel Dragon is a famous Polish folktale, in which the evil dragon lived in a cave under the hill and was stealing young girls and farm animals. The prince of Krakow offered a reward of half the country and marriage to his daughter – free to the person who killed the dragon. Hundreds of men and soldiers tried and failed to slay the dragon. A shoe maker had an idea to fill a sheepskin with salt and leave it near the cave, which caught the attention of the dragon. He ate it and then his stomach started to burn, and he ran down to the river to drink. The dragon continued to drink and couldn’t get rid of the burning in his stomach, and drank so much until he burst and died. The statue was built in front of the dragon’s den in 1970, and breathes fire every few minutes. 
Mr Pancake & Pizza Boyz is home to photogenic food and a diet busting menu, only a ten minute walk from the main square. Offering pancakes topped with sweet treats like oreos, candy floss and kinder to name a few, this small café is always bustling and full of locals and tourists alike. Small flags depicting hashtags with phrases such as #FuckDiet make Instagram-worthy photographs, and it’s not just pancakes for sale. Smoothies and Pizza, as the name indicates, are also available boasting a huge number of random and bizarre toppings that you wouldn’t normally associate with the food, but still somehow works.

Galeria Krakowska is on the outskirts of the old town, across Planty Park. This is a large shopping centre filled with both shops and eateries. The centre is also located beside the main bus and train station, if you plan on using public transport. The mall includes a lot of common modern shops and outlets. Including (but not limited to):

Bershka, Converse, H&M, Calvin Klein, Kiehls, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, L’Occitane, Lee Wrangler, Levis, MAC, Mango, Sephora, Zara , Guess

It’s essential to take a walk through the Kazimierz (Jewish Quarter) which is full of bars, restaurant and traditional Jewish culture. Heroes Square is based within the Jewish ghetto, a must see, and is a public square marked by 33 empty chairs, commemorating the Polish Jews lost in the Second World War. Schindlers Factory is about half an hours walk from the old town, and minutes from Heroes Square. Although we did not do a full tour, we went to the Factory and had a look around the reception area at some of the wall art and displays. A tour lasts 90 minutes and is free on a Monday if you book tickets online in advance (these are limited).

For the thrill seekers visiting Krakow, we would highly recommend booking in an hour at ‘Top Gun’, a shooting range located approximately 20 minutes outside of Krakow city centre. We booked our visit to Top Gun online, a couple of months prior to our trip. The online booking process was very efficient and the customer service was very prompt and professional. Coming in at £46 per person, this truly did deliver “bang for our buck”.
We ordered an Uber about 30 minutes ahead of our booked slot at Top Gun and arrived there about 5 minutes prior to our start time. The drive to the range was mainly motorway and felt very swift. Upon arriving we were met by Alan, our tutor for the hour, a very pleasant British man who was extremely welcoming. Immediately upon walking into the range we were met with the very loud roar of machine gun, shotgun and hand gun fire, this was a completely new experience which immediately set the heart rate racing. 
When booking online you get to select your chosen range of guns to shoot whilst visiting Top Gun, we selected the “US Army” package, but there was also a “Russian Army” package as well as other assorted packages to choose from. Within your package you get 10 rounds to fire per gun.
For the gun nerd, Rambo wannabes out there, our US Army package involved firing an M16 rifle, an M4 Carbine rifle, a Colt 1911A1 hand gun, a Beretta hand gun and also a Sniper Rifle, complete with scope. 
When you have finished unleashing your inner Arnold Schwarznegger, you get to collect and keep the large paper target you have been aiming at, introducing some competition between you and the person you are visiting the range with.
Overall this was a great experience and one which we shall certainly be doing again the next time we are in Krakow!

One of the main reasons to visit Krakow is to go to the Auschwitz site. The tour of Auschwitz- Birkenau was a harrowing experience to say the least. This is the site of one of the greatest mass murders in history. I’m sure the majority of readers will have studied the Second World War in school, and understand the history and the tragedy of the Holocaust.

We arranged a tour of both camps through Krakow tours and this included pick up at a designated meeting point, the bus journey to and between camps, as well as a guided English tour for our group. 
The most upsetting part of the visit for me was the piles of shoes, suitcases, glasses that people brought with them when they thought they were going on a short trip for work or holiday. When people thought they would be returning home. Wooden legs and human hair, some of this woven into a blanket, was shocking to see but it hits you hard and you realise this really happened to human beings. It’s difficult to explain what it’s like to someone who hasn’t visited. If you get the chance, definitely do the tour.

Here are some things to note when visiting Auschwitz: 
• If you take a bag this must be no larger than an A4 sheet of paper and you are required to go through security checks before entering the camp. 
• There is a restaurant selling food and drinks at the camp gates however once you enter the camp food & drink is not allowed in with you. You can leave this on the bus if you arrange a tour. 
• There are some areas where photography is not permitted; it is a criminal offence to disobey these rules. Signs will indicate if you are in one of these buildings, as will your tour guide if you choose a guided tour. 
• If you tour both camps, this is a long day so make sure you are well prepared with a good nights sleep before hand, and bring something to eat/drink on the bus (as long as your tour company allows this) 
• The majority of the tour is conducted outdoors and there is a lot of walking between buildings – dress appropriate for the weather. There is no dress code as such for visiting the museum, however you must be respectful. 
• Behave in an appropriate manner and be respectful. We saw a lot of people taking selfies with buildings, posing on the train tracks and messing about in a place where you should be doing the complete opposite.

I’ll finish this guide with a list of food and drink places we visited and would recommend. The majority of these places we stumbled upon just by walking around, and would highly recommend: 
• The Spaghetti – It’s best to be safe & make a reservation either online, over the telephone or popping by earlier in the day as it gets full really quickly due to the popularity of the place.

• Sticky Fingers – I got a 50cm pizza which came on a raised tray and had a table of it’s own. The pizza was to die for, and since visiting Poland I’ve noticed a lot of UK restaurants following suit with the long style pizza, although I’m unsure exactly where the tradition began. 
• Virtuoso – a pizzeria and restaurant in the main square
• Pub Pod Papugami – an Irish pub located on a street off the main square, cheap drinks, good atmosphere and they play the football on their big screens. As with anywhere, drinks are cheaper off main square than on 
• World of Beer 
• Bier Halle - super cheap steins for beer drinkers like Calum, if you’re not as into beer like me they offer small sample beers, with a different type of beer in each 
• Cyber Machina - an underground pub dedicated to video games, a bit tricky to find but once you’re in, they have a menu with lots of drinks and potions, and the decor is amazing. They have loads of games consoles and board / card games to play while you enjoy your drinks.
• Hard Rock Café – bound to find one in any city you visit, but this is located right in the main square and happy hour is available during the week to get a bargain on drinks. 
• Cakester Café - a small café across from our hotel, just off the main square (Swietego Tomasza). This offers seating, takeaway and they are a healthy lifestyle café and cake shop. They have a selection of vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and dairy-free options for cakes and breakfast. The prices were also relatively cheap for a quick bite to eat in the morning, and knowing you were eating something healthy was a bonus in itself.

Kale Origin and Growing Information
Where did kale come from?
This leafy green was first cultivated in the eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor around 2000 B.C. It is thought to have developed as a descendant from curly-leaved cabbage varieties that already existed. It then made its way to Europe during the Middle Ages, where it mutated to develop a “head”. This kale most closely resembles the kale we know and love today.
How does kale grow the best?
Kale is a cold weather crop, meaning it grows best in the spring or fall. It can also tolerate frost, which extends the growing season for fresh greens. Kale plants actually prefer the cooler temperatures, as the heat makes their leaves taste bitter. These plants prefer full sun, but will also tolerate partial shade. The more sun they get, the stockier their leaves will be. They are also relatively low maintenance to grow. Set them 18-24 inches apart in your garden and keep them moist, but not overwatered, and you should be ready to harvest in 6-8 weeks!
When should I plant my kale outside?
Kale plants prefer the cold and even light frosts. For this reason, avoid peak summer sun with these greens. Set plants out 3 to 5 weeks before the last frost in spring or 6 to 8 weeks before the first frost of fall.
Can kale grow in the winter? Can in survive a frost?
As mentioned above, kale survives and prefers frosty weather. Though the plant cannot survive in the main part of winter, it can be planted in early spring. Also, it will survive well into the late fall and early winter if planted near the end of a typical growing season.
Cooking and Preparing Kale
Can kale go bad?
Unfortunately, like most fresh produce, kale can go bad. Overtime, if left neglected, the water-rich kale leaves will start to leak out and get soggy or slimy. Additionally, rotten kale can take on a sulfuric smell. If your kale bunch smells or feels off, it’s probably time to compost it. However, to extend your kale’s life in the fridge, wrap the stems in a damp paper towel and keep in a loose plastic bag.
Which kale is most bitter? Least bitter?
Curly kale, especially those in darker colors like purple, is the bitterest variety of the plant. Their deep, earthy flavors are great for stews and stir-fries. On the other hand, Tuscan kale varieties have flat leaves and are the least bitter tasting. Some varieties of Tuscan kale have a nuttiness that can almost taste sweet. The most bitter kale will taste is when it is raw, so try cooking to mellow the flavors. If you find the taste is still too bitter for your liking, soak in cold water prior to cooking and add a pinch of salt.
How do you make kale chips?
Choose your favorite variety of kale (curly leaves are the most popular for chips). Remove the ribs and cut the remaining leaves into 1½-inch pieces. Lay in one thin, even layer on a baking sheet. Toss with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Bake in the over at 275 degrees for about 20 minutes, or until the leaves are crispy but not burnt. Let cool to preference and serve as finger food. Which kale is best for salads?
Tuscan kale is the least bitter variety of the plant. This makes it the friendliest for salads or raw consumption. Also, baby kale is smaller, softer and less bitter. It also makes a great option for salads or a garnish. However, any type of kale can be used for salad or eaten raw. If using a tougher variety, massage your kale to soften and release some of the bitterness.

Which kale is healthiest?
Like any other vegetable, the nutritional differences between the different kinds of kale a pretty small. All types of kale are very nutrient-dense, meaning they have a lot of nutrients for very few calories, and benefit your health. The slight differences in kale’s nutrient profile can be recognized by bitterness and color. The more bitter varieties of kale are slightly more nutrient dense than the milder types. Also, kale that comes in darker colors contains different phytochemicals, which are nutrients that show themselves through the colors of our foods. Intuitively, darker plants have marginally more phytonutrients than lighter plants. However, any type of kale you prefer is a health-promoting food to add to your routine.
Why should I put kale in juice or smoothies?
Green smoothies are all the rage with health-conscious eaters. Why is that? Believe it or not, the aesthetic is only part of the appeal. Adding kale to juice or a smoothie barely affects the texture and is almost unnoticeable in the taste. However, kale adds a variety of nutrients and vitamins that aren’t present in fruits. Also, if you add kale to a smoothie, it adds a bunch of digestion-promoting fiber. Unfortunately, if you are juicing your kale, you lose the fiber. Can kale give you gas or bloating?
Kale is in the cruciferous vegetable family. These veggies contain a naturally occurring sugar called raffinose. Raffinose cannot be digested until bacteria in your gut ferment it, which can release gas into your intestines and cause some bloating. However, the more often you eat cruciferous vegetables (other examples include broccoli, cabbage and brussels sprouts), the better your gut gets at digesting them and the less discomfort you will experience. Cooking vegetables can start softening some of the fiber, which also makes it easier to digest.
On the flip side, will kale make you poop?
Kale contains a lot of fiber, about 1.5 grams per cup or about 6% of your daily fiber needs. Eating plenty of fiber can help you stay regular and keeps your digestive system running spick and span. However, introducing fiber to quickly can result in constipation, so pace yourself when adding these leafy greens. Some bloating or gas when trying a new vegetable is normal. However, eating kale, raw or cooked, should not result in diarrhea or any major stomach discomfort.
Does kale make you lose weight?
Kale is nutrient-dense, meaning it has a lot of nutrition packed in to very few calories. It also has a high water and fiber content, meaning it takes up a lot of space in your stomach. For these two reasons, swapping out something less nutrient-dense and more calorie-dense with kale can reduce your total calorie intake, make you feel more full and promote weight loss. However, just adding kale will not likely be enough to make you lose weight on its own. Regular exercise and a balanced diet, which can include kale, is the best method for sustainable weight loss.

Natural Pain Relief for Athletes
Being an athlete can take quite a toll on the body, even with a great diet. Over weeks of training I’ve found that even on the best diet, I’m bound to run into injuries and soreness. That being said there are several things that make a big difference in how I feel the next day and rather or not I’m able to train the next day.
Currently, I’m training for a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition in May. I’m new, and my workload isn’t nearly that of a seasoned professional athlete, but for the average person, it’s intense.
Every day I do a full body weight lifting workout, yoga, stretching and breath control, 100 bodyweight squats, three sets of push-ups and pull-ups, drilling and training with my dad for about 20 minutes, a mile run, and training at the gym for 3-4 hours a day.
Most injuries I get heal quickly. Since starting Brazilian jiujitsu I’ve suffered jammed toes, a bruised trachea, a pulled quad muscle, and most recently a pulled muscle in my rib area near my spine. Every other injury has been quick to heal, gone in three days at the most. My rib injury took longer to heal. Even after it got better, I spent weeks being sore in that area and having to pay special attention not to reinjure it.
I’ve got a competition soon so extended time off isn’t an option, nor is any sort of pain management that would slow my healing long term. I don’t take pain medication of any sort, nor do I use recreational pain relief like cannabis. Cannabis and over-the-counter pain relief, as well as prescription pain medication all slow down the healing process exponentially for temporary relief.
I view my pain (and many other things in life) like a credit card. Using medication to relieve pain temporarily means dealing with a longer lasting injury, and more pain in the long run. For instance, if I have an injury that hurts at a 6 out of 10, I can smoke some weed or take some other pain medication. But once it wears off that 6 becomes a 7, maybe an 8. And of course, the next dose of pain relief won’t be as effective unless you up the dosage. That’s not my idea of a desirable feedback loop.
To promote healing, we do hot-cold compresses switching back and forth to attract blood flow and inflammation for healing. In the end, we use lots of deep tissue oil on the area. Deep tissue repair oil is my number one recommendation for pain relief and healing if you’re only going to use one thing to aid in the healing process. I use it multiple times a day when I feel sore and before or after a workout. Deep tissue oil has menthol crystals, cayenne, wintergreen oil, and other things to promote healing and attract blood flow to the target area.
I also do hot epsom salt baths as often as needed. It’s nothing revolutionary, but epsom salt does help release tension, relax the muscles and prevent soreness.
Many people recommend Boswellia, an herbal extract, to help with inflammation and pain. Although I’ve never used it, you can read more about it and its benefits in this article.
I stretch and do yoga every day to work on flexibility and aid in healing as well. Even if I’m injured to the point of being unable to workout, I still stretch for movement and healing.
Many other athletes have done down similar paths of using natural remedies to help heal, but very few go deep enough to get the full benefits. Acupuncture and chiropractic care are two examples of holistic routes that some people go down, but as great as they are, they’re really only temporary pain relief. Acupuncture and chiropractic work can be great aids for the body in addition to a healthy diet and routine, but they don’t fix any problems on their own.
Diet
Without a healthy diet, I wouldn’t be able to do this every day, but I’ve learned that there’s a difference between fueling my body for everyday life, and my diet when I’m training. When I’m training, I eat a high caloric diet with lots of protein. My main sources of protein are eggs, meat, and cheese. I generally eat less than a pound of meat a week. I have a little bacon in every salad, and between one and three nights a week, we’ll have sausage or bacon in dinner. I also eat homemade beef jerky for protein in between classes.
Eating an anti-inflammatory diet is probably the most important part of my healing process because it goes beyond just healing. My diet is even more strict than it was prior to fighting, although prior to fighting I ate better than almost anyone I knew. I have to eat a diet that not only aids in healing but prevents me from getting injured frequently. With the right diet, you can make your body impervious to injury. I don’t sit around and wait for an injury to start eating a diet that promotes healing.
Every day I eat a large salad with lots of different vegetables. Diversity is an extremely important part of a healthy diet that many people are missing. There are lots of professional athletes who have figured out that a healthy diet allows them to perform radically better, along with recovering faster and overall feeling better. That being said, not many people have figured out that there’s a big difference between eating some kale salad and eating a 10-cup salad with kale, collards, rainbow chard, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, and more. My salads have at least 10 different vegetables and herbs in them. This article goes into how I make my salads and cranberry lemonade.
Three to four times a week I drink my “anti-inflammatory smoothie“. I make it with an abundance of anti-inflammatory foods like ginger, pineapple, cranberries, tart cherries, and turmeric (to name a few). I drink lots of cranberry lemonade to flush out toxins and inflammation, as well as stay hydrated. Lastly, I obviously avoid inflammatory foods. I limit my grains and avoid corn (although occasionally we make homemade tortillas). I don’t even eat oatmeal anymore, because it’s too similar to gluten in the way it digests and causes inflammation.
Many fighters and bodybuilders eat lots of oatmeal as a good source of protein and fuel. For many people, it’s great. But, like most other grains, it’s inflammatory. I feel it when I eat them. I’ll bet if you’re paying attention, you can too. When I’m in need of protein and fuel I stick to things like eggs, homemade beef jerky, walnuts, chia seeds, and raw sheep’s cheese.
It seems like the list of foods I can’t eat is extremely long, but the list of foods I can and do eat is even longer. The guidelines are pretty simple, make everything from scratch, eat tons of raw veggies, eat tons of cooked veggies, and avoid any and all things processed.
Supplements
With a healthy diet the average person shouldn’t need to take supplements everyday when they’re healthy, but someone who’s pushing their body on an athletes level may find that they function better with supplements.
Currently, I take Sf722 every day, generally because I eat a lot of fruit. Sf722 also helps pump my body full of good stuff similar to salads. Without Sf722 my skin can be prone to breaking out from rolls on the mats, and my healing and recovery slows. I also take Abzorb, or other enzymes to help with digestion, especially if I eat pasteurized nuts. I take vitamin D, Vitamin B, and thyroid and/or pituitary glandular supplements to prevent endocrine system crashes.
When you’ve taken antibiotics or medication or done anything to eradicate your gut microbiome, your gut isn’t producing enough vitamin B. This can be one of the last things to correct itself after you’re healthy. Taking vitamin B helps heal your gut and helps the endocrine system by providing your body with vitamins that your gut should be producing.
When you’re overweight, even just a small amount your body has a hard time assimilating vitamin D from the sun. not to mention most of us don’t get enough sunlight anyways. Being overweight also leads to extra stress on the kidneys (and lower back) and the endocrine system.
Sleep
Diet and sleep are equally as important for overall health, and when it comes to how sore I am and my recovery time for an injury. Unfortunately, it can be hard to get a good night’s sleep when my injury is severe enough, but it’s always a top priority.
I always get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep. Regardless of the quality of sleep, I’m in bed trying to sleep for at least 8 hours. Sometimes depending on the workout the day before, or how an injury is healing, I can get more than 10 hours of sleep.

Training
While training anything contact or combat related it’s extremely important than you learn how to protect yourself from injury while drilling and rolling. It took me way too long to learn how to fall properly in jiujitsu, and it’s still a work in progress. Falling down wrong was the number one cause of injury for me while training.

That being said, once I learned how to protect myself from injury I found that training was actually extremely important for healing my most recently injury. So, if you can move, move. Staying active and using your body is extremely important for working your muscles and building them back stronger after an injury.
Generally, I use the rule use it or lose it. Broken bones often don’t need casts (and strong healthy bones are harder to break). Staying active is usually your best bet for healing quickly.
Conclusion
Some days I wake up barely able to move! Training this hard has been really intense, but I know that with the way I do things, my recovery time is radically faster than anyone else I know doing the same thing as me.
In my experience the most important thing to do is to be in tune with your body to an extreme. The moment something isn’t right I can tell, and I can feel a difference in the way certain foods fuel my body. I track my sleep and my diet, and when things aren’t working the way they should I back track and examine where I might have gone wrong.
This takes time, and it takes mistakes. I’ve experimented with lots of different foods and routines and I’ve seen how certain things make me feel, and how they effect my performance. Working out and being active is a wonderful thing, but it doesn’t mean much if you’re not healthy enough to sustain it.
