In general, I think speculative fiction allegories for things like prejudice, oppression, etc. work better when they're not direct 1:1 analogies for a specific real-life scenario, but when they take inspiration from real life to explore variations on a theme. And a lot of criticisms of these allegories seem to come from "This doesn't work as a 1:1 analogy for the real-life scenario I have in mind, so it's a bad allegory".

Like, one I talk about a lot is X-Men, which gets a lot of entirely justified criticism for being a bad allegory for racism and queerphobia, but the same elements that make it a bad allegory for those oppressions make it a great allegory for disability. Oh, people are considered subhuman because their bodies are sometimes out of control? Yeah, checks out.

What got me thinking about this, though, was yet another person saying that The Sneeches is a bad allegory for racism and schools should stop teaching it... but I've never thought of The Sneeches as an allegory for racism. It's an allegory for classism, and consumerism, and social climbing, and status symbols, and for those things, it works great. If I have kids, and they start wanting name brand crap, we're reading The Sneeches.
