The anger and empathy I have for Beom Sok’s Character

He’s the type of person that isn't capable of opening up to his friend's even if they are genuine. He’s deeply guarded. He's experienced such prolonged neglect and abuse that opening up feels dangerous. For someone who’s never been shown consistent love or support, vulnerability doesn’t feel safe, it feels like giving ammo to an enemy. He’s a child who’s grown up learning silence as a survival mechanism. So opening up to his friend’s is like expecting someone who never learned how to swim to just jump in and not drown.

He was projecting his trauma from his bullies to Suho, “don’t put you hands on my shoulder” he said as the memories of his bullies flash in his mind. He wasn't seeing Suho; he was seeing every moment of humiliation and violence that came before. He started spiraling when my baby girl Yeon joined the crew, his sense of belonging was fragile. Yeon had charisma and a natural closeness with Suho, Beom Seok's internalized insecurity screamed, "You’re not needed anymore." He wasn’t emotionally mature enough to see Yeon as an addition but as a replacement of himself.

His effin dad is the real villain ! Beom Seok's father is why so many people can't even begin to heal: because the very first person meant to love them unconditionally was the first to break them. He doesn’t have a good coping mechanism to vent out his feeling’s to so he bottled it all up until it turns into a quiet implosion, actually worse, a misdirected explosion at the people who he care.

He reminded me of a friend I have who’s been abused too, they starved him of everything; love, food and a home to belong to. They hurt him so in turn he hurt’s himself because that’s all he’d ever known, same as Beom Sok. And maybe that’s why Beom Seok hurts so much to watch. Because he's not just a character. He's someone I’ve seen. Someone I’ve known. Someone I might be.
