5 Seinen Manga that are worth checking out for starters

When you mention the word seinen to the average manga fan, most of them would picture manga like Berserk, Goodnight Punpun, and Monster. All of which are considered to be the greatest manga out there. But it has been a misconception that seinen manga tend to be the more slow-burn, gloomy, and brutal version of its counterpart shonen which tends to be safer and fast paced such as My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, and The Quintessential Quintuplets.

But seinen is not really a genre, it is a demographic. It is manga that are aimed towards a more mature male audiences (18yo and above) while shonen is aimed towards a younger male audience(13-17yo). Anyways, not all adults seek dark stories that are just as dark as their lives.

So, for those who want to dive in the world of seinen manga, we got 5 manga that we believe to be good entry point for those who wants to start. While, these do have some mature narratives and imagery, it is something that will not throw you off.

My Dress-up Darling

We are starting off with something more relaxed. Many of you reading this might have already known this because of this anime adaptation and for good reason. But the manga is just as good as the anime.

For those of you who don’t know, My Dress up Darling (Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru) is a 2018 romcom manga written and illustrated by Shinichi Fukada. The story follows the shy and reserved Gojo who has a passion for making hina dolls meets his exact opposite, the bold and confident gyaru Marin who is a fan of anime and eroge and is interested in cosplaying. Gojo helps Marin with her cosplaying aspirations by creating her costumes. As the story goes, romantic feelings began to spark between the two.

However, the manga does have a lot of risqué drawings that might put people off of the series. On the other hand, this manga is quite funny, the characters are all fun to read, especially the main couple. As for the romance aspect, it is slow-burn compared to other romance manga out there as the manga focuses more on the cosplay aspect.

In conclusion, if you’re seeking for a new and refreshing seinen romance manga to read, or if you’ve been hooked by the anime adaptation and wanted more of the series, try reading the manga of My Dress-up Darling. It’ll surely make your days better.

Oshi no Ko

Up next, we have something that’s a bit weird but quite unique. Oshi no Ko is a 2020 drama manga created by two mangaka celebrities. It is written by Aka Akasaka, the creator of Kaguya-sama Wants to be Loved, and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari, the creator of Scum’s Wish.

But what is the plot of this manga? To be honest, it is difficult to describe the story without spoiling the twist of the first volume which is the prelude of the story that comes after that. What I can tell you is the first chapter which already has a lot of twist in itself. The first chapter follows two idol obsessed people, a gynecologist, and a girl in a critical condition. The gynecologist discovers that the idol that he stan, Ai is pregnant at the age of 16 and checked in at the hospital that he works at. And then it all goes bizarre after that.

Anyhow, the manga has commentary about the dark side of the Japanese entertainment industry. It covers things such as the idol industry, reality TV show, YouTube or Niconico, theatre, manga writing, and the very dark ones such as cancel culture, exploitation, and competition. But as it was written by the guy who made Kaguya-sama, Aka Akasaka the series still manages to have it’s light hearted and comedic moments, along side the gorgeous artwork of Mengo Yokoyari.

So, if you are finding something weird but has a unique concept, try Oshi no Ko. This manga is relatively new as of now, it has 74 chapters and is still ongoing and has yet to have an anime adaptation. So, you can catch up to it with ease, badabing badaboo.

Golden Kamuy

Now imagine Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, but without stands, and with guns. Golden Kamuy is a 2015 action thriller manga written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. Just like My Dress-up Darling, this too has an anime adaptation back in 2018.

Golden Kamuy’s story is set during the early 20thcentury Japan and follows the Russo-Japanese war veteran Saichi Sugimoto and the young Ainu hunter, Asirpa as they went off to an adventure to hidden treasure of gold that is hidden somewhere in the island of Hokkaido. The maps leading to the supposed treasure are tattooed on the prisoner’s body from the Abashiri prison. In order to collect these maps, they must track down these prisoners who had escaped the prison first, as other dangerous people and factions are interested on the hidden gold.

This manga has intense and thrilling action scenes, from gun fights to bear fights, to fist fights. And so, the manga can be very brutal but the manga can be quite bizarre and goofy at times and does it on perfect timing and paneling. This manga also sheds a light on the cultures and people of Hokkaido and Sakhalin such as the Nivkh, Uilta, Evenki, and especially the Ainu, which the main character Asirpa belongs to.

If you are seeking for a more action-packed series, or even an educational one, try Golden Kamuy. It’s fun, thrilling, gory, goofy and educational. What’s not to like?

Mieruko-chan

Next on the list, horror fans might like. Mieruko-chan is a 2018 horror comedy manga written and illustrated by Tomoki Izumi. It also had an anime adaptation last fall.

The plot revolves around this girl Miko Yotsuya who has the ability to see ghost, very, very terrifying ghost. Instead of reacting and running away as quick as possible, she tries her best to ignore these ghoulish fiends much to her trembling on the inside. As the story progress, she meets people who can also see these ghost to a degree.

The mangaka of this series seems to have a keen eye for horror, as every ghost on every page are creepy and horrific enough to give you chills. But it is also a comedy, wherein scenes of Miko doing her best ignoring the ghosts who wants to scare her. The horror and comedy are pretty well balanced in the series, it gets scary when it needs to be scary and funny when it needs to be funny. Although a bit of warning for the first few chapters as has fan service that might get people off. But it does die down as the chapters progress and focuses on the world building.

The manga is still quite new, with only 41 chapters as of now writing this. So, it’s quite difficult, where the story will go. But you will not regret checking this one out.

Land of the Lustrous

For our last pick, it is something unlike every manga you have ever read. Land of Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni) is a 2012 action fantasy manga written and illustrated by Haruko Ichikawa. It also has an anime adaptation back in 2017.

The story is set at the future on a small island smack dab on the middle of the ocean. It follows these 28 gem characters with their sensei. The gems’ job is to defend themselves from the Lunarians, who are the inhabitants of the moon who seeks to harvest the gems to create weapons and jewelry. Our main character is Phosphophyllite, or Phos for short, happens to be the weakest of the bunch. Even with his upbringing, he wants to be more useful to group by fighting the Lunarians, but was only given the job of writing an encyclopedia.

The manga really is very unique. Concept alone is very different to many manga out there. It also dabbles a lot of philosophy and buddhism, and the meaning of being a human. The artwork of the manga drives its beauty from simplicity, using only basing shapes and shading while also encapsulating body horror whenever the gems are broken apart. Phos on the other hand is a very interesting character. The number of changes on his body and psyche is staggering as he continues to find out the mystery of this world.

Unfortunately, the manga is currently 1 year on hiatus with no signs of the series returning for now. But even that downside, you could appreciate it for what has to offer at the current moment, because there will never ever be another gem just like this.
