25 February 2025
Film: SOUNDTRACK TO A COUP D’ETAT (dir. Johan Grimonprez, 2024, Belgium-France-Netherlands)
Forum: Doc Films   Format: DCP
Observations: The film opens and closes with the famous Harlem protest in 1961 at the United Nations against the West's ousting of Patrice Lumumba as premier of the newly-independent Democratic Republic of the Congo. The film fires a torrent of information at the audience, all documented but giving the viewer little time or context to process it. (Also a weighty 150 minutes.) Many musicians are highlighted (Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln, in particular), though few if any numbers are heard in their entirety. About 35 in attendance.

It’s been quite a year for thrillingly inventive music documentaries. First there was Gary Hustwit’s Eno, a groundbreaking portrait of the pioneering musician, producer and artist that tore up the rules of cinema and reinvented itself with each new screening. And now there’s Belgian film-maker Johan Grimonprez’s dazzling Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, a breathtaking, ideas-packed journey that weaves together American jazz and the geopolitical machinations of the 1950s and 60s. It’s almost reductive to describe this extraordinary essay film as a music documentary – it’s about so much: the cold war; the bloody fingerprints of colonialism in Africa; the 1961 assassination of Patrice Lumumba, prime minister of the newly independent Democratic Republic of the Congo; Nikita Khrushchev’s shoe. But linking it all is an eye-opening exploration of the politics of jazz, and the music itself, freewheeling and skittish and pulsing through every frame. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/nov/13/coups-colonialism-and-all-that-jazz-new-film-unravels-cold-war-truths-johan-grimonprez-soundtrack-to-a-coup-detat This densely detailed and fascinating film skips between timelines and continents. It covers the CIA’s use of unwitting jazz musicians (Louis Armstrong, for example) as distractions to cover their political meddling in various countries. It touches on the incredible Andrée Blouin – Lumumba’s adviser and speechwriter, women’s rights activist and a figure who warrants a whole other documentary dedicated to her remarkable life. There are snippets of adverts for iPhones and Teslas, acknowledging how the mineral resources of the DRC made it such a prized target for colonial powers, and tying the country’s past to the unfolding story in the present day. Informative, exhaustively researched, but never dry or didactic, this is a phenomenal achievement by Grimonprez, who holds his own country to account for its shameful role in this sorry tale. Documentary Feature: Will there a brave choice?
Tumblr media
The nominees are:
Black Box Diaries
No Other Land
Porcelain War
Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat
Sugarcane
For the second year in a row, all the Documentary Feature nominees are international contributions. Again, I’m rather surprised that some of these beat out more populist American favorites like Will & Harper and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, which won at BAFTA, PGA, and the National Board of Review. (Both tied for the Critics Choice.)
Perhaps the most well reviewed of this year’s nominees is No Other Land, the story of a young Palestinian desperately trying to save his West Bank village from systematic displacement by Israeli forces. In addition to numerous critics’ prizes, it won the Independent Spirit Award. However, one wonders if its political theme will resonate with enough Oscar voters. The fact that it hasn’t been able to find a U.S. distributor has been telling.
The Ukraine war has been the center of the last two films to win Best Documentary Feature. This year, we have Porcelain War, which follows a group of Ukrainian artists who join the war effort. It has a DGA award on its belt.
Black Box Diaries outlines emergence of the #MeToo movement in Japan through one woman’s struggle. It’s effective but may not be timely enough to have the same punch as other films in the category.
Sugarcane examines the atrocities of the residential school system in Canada and the oppression of the First Nations children who attended them. While the subject matter is interesting, I found the pacing a bit too slow for my taste.
Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat is perhaps the most creative of this year’s entries with respect to its structure and storytelling. However, its complete dependence on archival footage may hurt its chances, as such films don’t usually fare well in this category.
Who will win: No Other Land
But look out for: Porcelain War
Who I’d vote for: No Other Land
If I could add one more: Daughters

My Oscar Predictions 2025
When the 2025 Oscar nominations were announced, to my surprise, many of the films nominated had been on my letterbox list labeled "movies I need to watch." At this point in my life, I have finally come to a point where I am watching movies when they come out. No longer am I seeing movies 3-4 years after their release and understanding why they received so much praise at the time. Films are not wine. They are not meant to be aged to perfection. Especially if they are receiving praise in current time. Though, it is a hard habit to fight, I have done my best at watching most of the films nominated tonight and these are my predictions.
