Researchers propose new method to measure cosmic expansion
In 1929, astronomers discovered that galaxies are streaming away from us and each other. They interpreted this observation that the universe is expanding. However, when they measured how fast it is expanding, they got different answers using different methods. The difference continues to be a thorn in their description of the expanding universe.
A team of researchers led by Souvik Jana at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Bengaluru, have proposed a solution. Their paper, to be published in the Physical Review Letters, has been selected as an Editor’s suggestion.
The solution hinges on studying gravitational waves, ripples in spacetime, which astronomers first detected in 2015. The team studied how gravity itself affects gravitational waves.
As pairs of black holes merge into a single black hole in a cosmic dance, they emit gravitational waves. As they reach the Earth, kilometre-lengthed detectors help scientists study the properties of the black hole pairs. Massive galaxies occupying the space between the black holes and the Earth change the paths of these spacetime ripples, resulting in the detectors recording multiple copies of the same waves. Astronomers call this phenomenon gravitational lensing.
“We have been observing the gravitational lensing of light for over a century,” said Parameswaran Ajith, a co-author of the study. “We expect the first observation of lensed gravitational waves in the next few years!”
In the next two decades, scientists will start running advanced gravitational wave detectors in search of the merging black holes. “Future detectors will be able to see out to much larger distances than the existing ones,” explained Shasvath J. Kapadia, from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, one of the co-authors of the study. Tejaswi Venumadhav from the University of California at Santa Barbara, another co-author, said they will be able to detect weaker gravitational wave signals that get buried in the noise affecting present detectors.
Astronomers estimate that the advanced detectors will record signals from a few million black hole pairs, each merging to form a mega-black hole. Among these, about 10,000 black hole mergers will appear more than once in the same detector due to gravitational lensing.
The team led by Souvik demonstrated that by counting the number of such repeat black hole mergers and studying the delay between them, they can measure the universe’s expansion rate. As the data from advanced gravitational wave detectors trickle in over the next two decades, their method can potentially measure the universe’s expansion rate accurately.
The team’s proposal, said Souvik, does not require knowing the properties of the individual galaxies which create multiple copies of gravitational waves, the distances to the black hole pairs, or even their exact location in the sky. Instead, it only requires an accurate method of knowing which signals are lensed. Scientists are improving their techniques to identify the repeat signals, adds Shasvath.
Gravitational lensing requires the astronomical source to be far away. The black hole pairs fit this criterion, which can originate a whooping 13.3 billion years ago, barely 500 million years old after the universe’s birth.
Shasvath cautions that their proposed method will be helpful only when the advanced detectors record millions of black hole mergers. Presently, the team is studying how such a future observation will be able to tell apart different models of the universe that cosmologists have proposed.
The models, the team explained, attempt to solve mysteries of the elusive dark matter, a form of matter that does not interact with light. The dark matter hypothesis solves the astronomer’s problem of explaining why galaxies have the observed mass. However, scientists are still unsure of the dark matter’s properties, leading to various dark matter models.
The team’s ongoing research suggests that future observations of lensed gravitational waves will serve as a tool to study the properties of dark matter.

Ever wonder about celebrity culture in the Star Trek era?  Like, do they have celebrities?  Are they mostly like movie stars (holo-stars??) or do some Starfleet officers become celebrities (like Kirk and Picard seem like they might be)?   Or is it like, some Starfleet officers become celebrities but really only to people in Starfleet and no one else would have any clue who these various officers are?
What are the memes like?  Do random people still write fanfic or ship these people and if so, with who?  Like, I can understand why Picard/Crusher was a big ship (not my cup of tea really, but I understand) but like, would most people really know who Crusher is even if they’re big into Picard?  Would they be like shipping Picard with like random other ship captains like “Oh I ship Picard with Captain Willow Blake of the Independent or Captain Souvik from the Unity.”

The Summon That Never Was: A Tale of Legal Error and Judicial Correction
Tumblr media
Souvik Bhattacharya v. Enforcement Directorate Kolkata Zone Office -II
SLP 14476/2023
Before Supreme Court of India
The present Criminal Appeal was heard by the Bench of Hon’ble Madam Justice Bela M Trivedi J & Hon’ble Mr Justice Pankaj Mithal J
Order
The criminal appeal was allowed on 16.02.2024 with the direction of release of the appellant petitioner on bail on the terms and conditions as may be imposed by the Special Court.
Fact
The Special (CBI) Court had not passed any order summoning the (alleged accused) present appellant Souvik Bhattacharya out of 14 accused persons.
Cognizance of the offences under the (PMLA)Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 was taken on 07.12.2022. Summons was issued to the appellant without any order to this effect.
The appellant thereafter voluntarily surrendered before the CBI Court and applied for bail.
Bail moved u/s 437was rejected by the Special Court on 22.02.2023.
The rejection of bail application was challenged before High Court and High Court also rejected the bail on 18.10.2023.
Aggrieved by the rejection of Bail by the High Court Appellant, Criminal Appeal is filed before the Supreme Court.
Submission of the Counsel for the Petitioner
The Special CBI Court took cognizance of the offence on 07.12.2022. At the time of taking of cognizance CBI Court observed that since 3 accused are already in judicial custody, process will not be issued against them with regard to rest (11 accused) summons will be issued at later stage.
Summon was later issued and served upon the present appellant.
Respecting the summons the appellant voluntarily surrendered before the Special CBI Court and since then, he is in judicial custody.
In the absence of any order summoning the appellant, the appellant could not have been taken into custody, even if the cognizance of the offence was taken against him.
Submission of the Counsel for the Enforcement Directorate
The issue of taking the appellant in custody without any order of summons was not raised by the appellant before the High Court.
However, he admitted that there was no order passed by the Special CBI Court issuing summons or warrant against the appellant, and that appellant had voluntarily appeared and surrendered before the Special Court.
It was also submitted that even without issuance of summons or warrant from the Court, accused can appear and surrender before the Court and seek his release on bail under section 437 of Cr PC.
Since the accused had surrendered before the Special CBI Court and applied for bail, his bail application was considered under section 437 and was rejected by the CBI Court and the same order was confirmed by the High Court as well.
Observation of the Apex Court
The Counsel for the Enforcement Directorate didn’t dispute the position that after the passing of the order on 07.12.2022 for further investigation by the CBI Court, there was no order passed by the Special CBI Court for issuance of the summons or warrant against the present appellant.
Still the summons was issued and served upon the appellant, pursuant to which he surrendered himself before the Court.
We fail to understand as to how summons under section 61Cr P C came to be issued on 22.12.2022 requiring the appellant to appear before the Special Court on 07.01.2023.
When the Special Court had specifically mentioned in the above order that in respect of the other eleven accused necessary order for issuance of summons will be issued at a later stage.
Since summons were served, the appellant appeared before the Special Court and applied for his release on bail.
Since there was no order passed by the Special Court for issuance of the summons or warrant, in our opinion, the application of the appellant seeking bail could not have been entertained.
The appellant-accused filed the bail application before the Special Court under the misconception of fact and misconception of law, which application came to be dismissed by the Special Court.
Though the issue was not specifically raised by the appellant before the High Court, the said question being the question of law, we have permitted the counsel for the appellant to be raised in the instant appeal
In view of the same the appellant accused is directed to be released on bail on the terms and conditions that may be imposed by the Special Court.

NASA observations find what helps heat roots of ‘moss’ on Sun
Did you know the Sun has moss? Due to its resemblance to the earthly plants, scientists have named a small-scale, bright, patchy structure made of plasma in the solar atmosphere “moss.” This moss, which was first identified in 1999 by NASA’s TRACE mission, blossoms around the center of a sunspot group, where magnetic conditions are strong. It straddles two atmospheric layers known as the chromosphere and corona and hides below the long feathery ropes of plasma known as coronal loops.
For decades, scientists have struggled to understand how this mossy region is connected to the Sun’s lower atmospheric layers and how material there is heated from 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit up to nearly 1 million degrees Fahrenheit — 100 times hotter than the bright surface just below. Now, research enabled by NASA’s High Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) sounding rocket and NASA’s Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) mission have given scientists insights into the superheating mechanism at play in the moss.
Observations from these instruments combined with complex 3D simulations have now revealed that electrical currents may contribute to heating the moss. Throughout this region there is a mess of magnetic field lines, like invisible spaghetti. This tangle of magnetic spaghetti creates electrical currents that can help heat material to a wide range of temperatures from 10,000 to 1 million degrees Fahrenheit. This local heating in the moss appears to occur in addition to heat flowing from the hot, multi-million-degree overlying corona. This insight, published in the journal Nature Astronomy on April 15, can help scientists understand the larger question of why the Sun’s entire corona is so much hotter than the surface.
“Thanks to the high-resolution observations and our advanced numerical simulations, we’re able to figure out part of this mystery that’s stumped us for the past quarter of a century,” said author Souvik Bose, a research scientist at Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory and Bay Area Environmental Institute, NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. “However, this is just a piece of the puzzle; it doesn’t solve the whole problem.”
For that, many more observations are needed. Some are coming soon: Hi-C is scheduled to launch again this month to capture a solar flare, and it may also capture another moss region together with IRIS. However, to obtain observations that can fully address how the corona and moss are heated, scientists and engineers are working to develop new instruments onboard the future MUlti-slit Solar Explorer (MUSE) mission.
IRIS and TRACE are part of NASA’s Explorers Program.

12 Years Of Pall Of Gloom Lifted: East Bengal Win A Spine-chiller To Take Home Kalinga Super Cup
Tumblr media
Kalinga Super Cup: East Bengal end 12 years of hurt, as they won their first silverware in as many years, defeating Odisha FC 3-2 after extra time at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, in the final of the Kalinga Super Cup, on Sunday. In a nail-biting finish that saw fortunes swing from one end to another for 120 minutes, both teams were reduced to 10 men at one point in time, but they fought like warriors till the end. If East Bengal had the last laugh, then home side Odisha FC would long be remembered for their indomitable spirit to battle it out till the end. The last time the Red and Golds won a major title at the national level was back in the 2012 Federation Cup, when they beat Dempo SC 3-2 after extra time at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. It was a game of two halves, as Odisha took the lead through Diego Mauricio in the first half before Nandha Kumar’s strike and Saul Crespo’s penalty swung the pendulum East Bengal’s way. Odisha centre-back Mourtada Fall was also sent off for a second bookable offence, putting the advantage squarely at East Bengal’s feet. However, Odisha clawed back deep into injury time with an Ahmed Jahouh penalty before East Bengal midfielder Souvik Chakrabarti was given his marching orders in extra time. Cleiton Silva, however, made sure that none of that counted in the end, as he capitalised on a defensive error to score the winner. Despite trials and tribulations about football being a team game, one truth remains in the Kalinga Super Cup – you stop Ahmed Jahouh, and you stop Odisha FC. Souvik Chakrabarti, the man tasked with marking the Moroccan knew it, East Bengal head coach Carles Cuedrat knew it, the 10,121 fans at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar knew it. Odisha took the lead when Ahmed Jahouh sent in an accurate aerial ball from the half-way line into the East Bengal box, where Roy Krishna got into a duel with Borja Gonzalez. While the Odisha attacker lost the fight for the ball, his teammate Diego Mauricio was on hand to pounce on the ball and slam it home, minutes before the half-time break. East Bengal, however, were not to give in without a fight. Defender Lal Chungnunga and winger Mahesh Naorem, the two returnees from national team duty, replacing Mandar Rao Dessai and Javier Siverio, respectively. This gave a new dimension to the East Bengal attack, as the width that Mahesh provided the Red and Golds down the left allowed Nandha Kumar to drift into the centre from the right, a combination that worked wonders for them. Minutes after the restart, Mahesh was able to thread a ball through to Nandha behind the Odisha defence, as the latter rounded Odisha keeper Lalthuammawia Ralte and slotted home the equaliser. The momentum was firmly in East Bengal’s favour, and unlike their hosts, the Red and Golds capitalised on it. A penalty shout and 10 minutes later, East Bengal were finally rewarded for their second penalty appeal after Cleiton was brought down by Mourtada Fall, who was booked for his indiscretion. Saul Crespo sent Lalthuammawia the wrong way, putting the Kolkata giants on top. Odisha were to fall further, as their Senegalese centre-back received his second booking just five minutes after the previous one, this time for an elbow on Borja Gonzalez. Fall had to prematurely march off the field, leaving his side down to 10 men and Odisha’s best player, Jahouh, covering for him as a makeshift centre-back. Despite going down to 10 men, the Juggernauts left it till deep in injury time for Mauricio to break free behind the East Bengal defence, as he went tumbling to the earth at the slightest hint of a touch from an onrushing Gill. Jahouh, who was man-marked throughout the game, stepped up for his retribution. Unlike the rest of the game, he had ample time to see which way Gill would leap, and he lazily chipped it in through the centre. We would need another 30 minutes to decide this. As the two sides had to dig deep for the extra 30 minutes, Chakrabarti, who had been brilliant throughout the night, committed his second bookable offence, cancelling out his side’s numerical advantage. More importantly, in the context of the midfield battle, however, Jahouh was now unmarked, with more space and time. The Red and Golds showed more desire when it mattered, however. Six minutes into the second half of extra time, Cleiton pounced on a pass by Lalthuammawia to Narender Gahlot, as the latter was unsuccessful in controlling the ball. The East Bengal captain, although faced with an empty goal, did well to score from a tight angle. Read the full article
