When you are not sure you check things.

The search for the problem continues.

I found that the stylus from my AT 440 fits the body of the AT7V. That is notable as that needle is a "microline" type which is more expensive and probably better. I hooked it up and played it. To test my "What the hell is wrong" thesis. I was glad that it fit as it is a clue to other stylii that will fit if I need to buy new. I am confident the AT7v body is good.

This time I used headphones. At first it sounded OK. At first. Then the sound on the right side went a bit strange. On the speakers I was getting fooled I guess. In the headphones there was definitely something wrong on the right side. It was intermittent and did not appear at first. This is electronic.

It is in the preamp as only it and my headphone amp were turned on. There is one tube in the preamp in the phono section so it does not affect the CD or stream inputs. This is good as when a tube goes bad there is no question which one. My old preamp had 5. I tell you that is a major pain. I hope it is only the tube. Tubes can fail fast or slow. It seems fine at turn on, but heat is heat.

I pull the device out of the rack. It is not heavy but there are a dozen wires and plugs in it. Then I have to take off 10 or so screws to remove the cover. Got that done.

Then I look for my box of glass things. I have one just for the preamp. I have a few things in there. I have a set of bad Tesla 6922s. I have a few old Sovtek tubes that may been originals from my old preamp. I have a new and bad Electro-Harmonix 6922. I also have a new and not bad EH 6922 that was sent as a replacement when the first one failed. I also have a genuine 6h23pi from where or when I do not know.

Russian tubes are important to ARC products. They tweaked the electronics to prefer those.

I also have some things I should never have bought which were a compatible tube with an adapter that makes the tube too tall to fit in my preamp of the time. They were really really cheap. That should have been a clue.

Out comes the tube in the preamp which was one of the old Sovteks. Leave the bad EH. Why don't I throw it out? I have that new EH 6922 which is really a 6H23Pi in disguise. I have three other Sovteks. Hmmm. Hey I am trying to identify the issue still, so pop in the nice EH which has fancy gold pins. I probably paid extra for that. If it is fine it should last a few years.

So do leave the cover loose in case that is not the problem? Hell put it in and put all the screws in tight. It is pain to put in the rack so if it works you do not have to remove it to set the cover properly. If it doesn't work then it doesn't matter as you have another problem and it comes out anyway.

The thing is with tubes they can blow in a shot, or just go slowly. If they go slowly you may not notice until it is far gone. You just get used to it. The positive side is they are easy to pull and replace if you know which one.

All back together. Fire it up. Same phono cartridge. Change only one thing when you are chasing a problem. Headphones on and listen. It sounds different. No distortions. Better clarity. A guitar that sounded hurt is fine now. This was probably the problem. I think it is funny that it was just the right side as the left goes through the same tube. Oh well mysteries.

I need to repeat this when I have more time as I need the system to fully warm up. So lesson learned do not jump to conclusions (again). The fancy AT440 is fine. That is a relief. Though the body on the AT7V looks nicer and is metal the 440 appears plastic. I think I will leave it in the 7V body for now. Stylus rolling. Probably far more useful than tube rolling.

So no new needles are required. I just gotta check on the new power tubes again.

it runs optimally off 500VAC. the outer glass bulb is a safety in case the inner coil breaks.

and it will be mine soon because a guy in Ukraine rescues them from Russian warehouses and sells them new so i bought one

Sovtek Bassov Blues Boy // Mig100B

This amplifier had been on my bucket list to try for many years. Ever since seeing Evan Weiss’ beautifully wood wrapped unit when Tumblr was still booming and the gear scene was still young. 

I was ecstatic driving home from the McDonalds parking lot where I traded some unloved gear and a little cash for this hard-to-find cvlt amp worship head. I was, however, underwhelmed upon turning it on. 

My assumptions and my hopes were that it would sound similar to the Mig100u I had a handful of years ago, but with a hair more clean headroom. This was mostly true but with a very different tone stack. It lacked a lot of desired brightness and wasn’t very usable with my current configuration of gear as a guitar amplifier. It had been modded with a spring reverb tank but the implementation was so subtle that it might as well not really exist. Neat for what it is, I suppose. 

Shortly after getting this amp I picked up the Acoustic 106 2x15 and began running this as a bass amp. This is where it came to life (shocker, a bass amp sounded good on bass). It stayed very clean and was loud enough to rattle the hell out of my house and shake things off of my shelves. It stayed relatively clean when cranked with a nice wooly grind that was very easy to tame. I have some clips of this setup going live in a few days. I was pleased with how it functioned as a bass amp but the Solarus, while being less power, can hang right next to it and has some added brightness I prefer when playing bass. It just wasn’t the amp for me.  This Sovtek has been sold and will forever be another tally on my long list of amps I’ve owned, but it wasn’t without learning a bit before sending it on its way. While it was nice to check another amp off of my list... Nothing has yet to come between me and my Sunn Solarus. I love that amp so much that I almost bought a second recently.  We’ll see what challenger comes next.

真空管の交換 ～ PSVANE 300B → SOVTEK 2A3（中古）

音が良くない中華製 300B シングル機です。冬の夜に雰囲気を楽しむための機材とはいえ音の悪さは使用に耐えません。別の EL34 プッシュプル機はそんなことないのですが…。ダメもとで出力管を交換してみることにしました。ベース機はスイッチ一つで 300B と 2A3 の交換ができますし、バイアスは自動調整回路になってるので交換は真空管の差し替えとスイッチの切り替えでＯＫです。

真空管はヤフオクで2本ぺア 11,500円で落札でした。「まだ駆け出しで取引回数も極端に多くない業者さん」と思える出品者さんで、微妙に日本語がおかしな感じでしたが評価は100%良いものでした。

送り状を見ると「やっぱり日本人じゃないかな」とか感じましたが丁寧な梱包と配送指示で届きました。（日本人だから良いとか、そうじゃないから悪いとかはないと思ってます。）

早速、交換作業を始めました。

ロシアの SOVTEK 製

↓ ベース機の PSVANE（中国）300B ～ 交換後は「らしきもの」の疑いも。

簡単に交換できると思いきや、ベース機の作りが良くなかった。

袴が付いた真空管の交換はその袴を握って抜き差ししなければなりませんが、ソケットがシャシーより凹んだ位置にあり袴を持つことができません。これではガラス部を持つしかありません。袴とガラス部の接着に力が加わって良くないのですがどうしようもありません。

仕方なくガラスス部を保持して極力揺らさないように上へ引き抜きました。袴とガラス部の接着は無事だったようですがこれでは破損覚悟の交換です。

交換する 2A3 は 300B よりも一回り小さい、出力も小さい球です。 

メーカー名は右横を向いた位置に。使用されている真空管は全て SOVTEK 製になりました。

ベース機後面のスイッチを 2A3 に切り替えて早速試聴しました。

「あらら、これは凄い。」音がよくなってます。これまでの試聴に堪えない、ホーンや女性ボーカルにまるでエレキギターのディストーションを掛けたようなざらつき、ひずみ感が無くなってます。これなら聴き続けることができます。低音がたっぷりな「好きな音」です。真空管の出力が半分程度でもボリュームを上げることなく再生できてます。

↑↓ 左に付けた球のグローが大きいようです。ヒーターの光はほとんど見えません。

今回の出力管交換は満足のいくものとなりました。逆に初めから付いていた球に対しては「何だったんだ」と思いました。まあ、安価な中華製ベース機が 300B に対応しきれてなかった可能性も捨てきれませんが、球の交換で解決できてよかったです。

最近ではメインのステレオセットよりもサブスピーカーにアンプを変えながら使うことの方が多くなってます。ローテーションが増えますがそれが楽しみです。
