70s のエコー　4

PCM81 が自分の音楽にハマるのかハマっていないのか、もうなんだか分からないですよという感じで悶々とした状況が続いている頃、たまたまマーク・ノップラーのサイトに立ち寄ってみた時、マークノップラーの昔のラックに MicMix の XL-305 というスプリング・リバーブが入っている写真を見つけたのです。XL-305 は、AudioScape というメーカーからレプリカが出ており、YouTube でその音を前から知っていたのですが、これは中々綺麗でオーガニックな鳴り方をするリバーブではあります。ただ、ちょっと綺麗過ぎな所もあって、それが 70s の文脈に紐づけられる音になるのか的な所で、どうしようかなー、くらいで止まっていましたが、その時はオリジナルを手に入れてみようとまでは思っていませんでした。ただ、我らが陰キャ系スーパーヒーロー、マーク・ノップラーが使っているとなると、話は別。

で、色々調べてみると、XL-305 の発売は1979年で、分類とするなら early 80s の時代の物なのでした。まあ、やっぱりステレオ音像のエコーで78年以前の物を望むのは、無理があるんだろうと。ただ、YouTube に上がっている数少ないオリジナル XL-305 のデモ動画の音を聞くと、ちょっとプレート味のある音で、音の質感そのものは十分 70s の質感を持っていそうで、これは PCM81 よりイケるかも・・と思ってしまった訳です。

PCM81 で確信が持てない以上、他に何かを見つけるしかありませんので、XL-305 がそんなにお高い物じゃないなら賭けてみるのはありかもしれない、と。で、またまた楽器検索サイトで検索をしてみますと、とある信頼できるショップから、そのショップで整備した物がお手頃な価格で出品されており、これは買ってみるしかないだろうと。

数週間後に届いて自分の曲で鳴らしてみた所、とても 70s でクリーミーな音が鳴るには鳴るのですが、自分はこの XL-305 の音を直ぐには受け止めきれないのでした。一口に 70s とは言っても、自分でも把握していないニュアンスがまだまだ沢山あったという事なのですよね。

ヴィンテージ・シンセの回でもありましたが、結局、各ト���ックの EQ を当てる場所を、XL-305 の音と音の重心が揃うようにちょっとずらしていくと、自分のトラックが以前より芯で 70s の質感を捉まえている感じにどんどんなっていくという。自分、70s に人格形成期を迎えてますから、70s 的なニュアンスなら実体験としてかなり深い所まで知ってるはず、なんてとんだ思い上がりでしたね。自分は 70s の質感を、完全には捉えられていなかったのでした。こうなると XL-305 を買っておいて本当に良かった、と言うしかない訳です。

この音の重心を PCM81 を使って気が付けるようになれと言われても、自分は無理ですよ。XL-305 を鳴らしながら探すから見つかるんです。結局、XL-305 でハマる EQ の当て方が見つかった後、その EQ で PCM81 を鳴らしても相当ピントの外れた印象の音になってしまうので、こういう所の差に凡人が丸腰で気が付けるようになれよ、機材じゃねーんだよ的な話って、実は才能ある人たちの呪いなんじゃないでしょうかね。

それはともかくも。オリジナルの XL-305 はウチの環境ですと、voltampere の GPC-TQ から電源を取るとかなりプレートちっくなニュアンスで鳴らせてウキウキな気分になれますので、今はそうしています。voltampere の GPC-TQ は、中々難しい電源で、ウチでは基本、ヴィンテージのアウトボードはここから取らないようにしているのですが、XL-305 を GPC-TQ から取っても、70s 風味が薄れてしまうこともなく、むしろ持ち前の 70s 風味を今の環境に適応させやすくなる印象になります。

voltampere の GPC-TQ は光城精工の生産なので、KOJO の音に近いニュアンスで鳴ってしまうと思うのです。低域がやたら野太くモダンな印象で鳴る、的な。結局、低域に量感がありますから、高域の繊細さが聞��えずらい面があって、それがヴィンテージのカラッとしたニュアンスを鳴らしたい場合に、結構邪魔かなという。あとはやっぱりノイズが少なすぎると、せっかくのヴィンテージ・プリアンプが、なんだかモダンな印象で鳴ってしまうというのもあります。ただ、XL-305 を使う分にはそれら GPC-TQ の特徴が欠点にはならず、むしろ今風の低域の作り方を取り入れたトラックとの相性を良くしてくれる感じです。この辺りは良い悪いとかではなく、単純に 70s のニュアンスが欲しいなら、という前提あっての感想ではあります。

という訳で、1745m、EP-2 に加えてこの XL-305 でかなり芯を食った感じで 70s な音作りができるようになりましたが、XL-305 はリバーブタイムが一切変えられませんので、そこが非常に不便です。短めのスプリングリバーブをもう一台買うのか、それとも何か別の手立てがあるのか・・的な所の悩みは、結局残ってしまうのですけども。

in terms of bass playing I find using delay and reverb rather difficult. the only time based effect i find consistently useful is spring reverb specifically. the more obviously spring the better. because bass guitar is so deeply pitched time effects have a tendancy to devolve into absolutely sludgey mud. either that or be so mild as to have about as much tonal difference as tonewood on a solidbody. which is to say, none. spring reverb on the other hand has a very unique tone compared to other forms of reverb. It plays really well with accentuating the bass' attack noises and i find that other reverbs dont do so well. perhapse i could use a send track with a low pass filter to cut off all the low end so that the TBEs dont muddy up the tone.
