As always, inspired by something @impishtubist posted on discord that then spiraled into this. Not smut, but adult content below, so.... 

The quiet of the summer evening spent in their garden was disrupted by a loud shriek from somewhere in the house. Sirius was on his feet first, running toward the house, with Lily and Remus on his heels. Remus turned his head back, ordering Harry and Teddy to stay outside, but knowing the nine- and eight-year-old (respectively) boys would likely not listen. 

Luckily, it was not anything dangerous that made James shriek, but…

“You’re getting a dog?” He was practically bouncing down the stairs. “When do you pick them up? What kind is it? What are you going to name it?”

Sirius froze at the bottom of the stairs. “We’re not getting a dog?”

It was too late, though, because Teddy (who had followed them in) was now screaming about getting a puppy that he wanted to name Snuffles, and Harry was running screaming behind him. They were already out the back door.

James stopped on the last step, turning his head to the side and making his mop of hair flop with the motion. “You’re not?”

“Of course not.” Remus walked up next to them. “Why do you think we’re getting a dog?”

“Well, I found the collar in your room–” 

Remus groaned and covered his face. Lily began immediately laughing. Sirius’s jaw dropped, but he glared at James. “What the fuck were you doing in our room?”

“Um…” James looked between the two of them. “The door was open?”

Remus snorted. “It most certainly was not open.” 

“I was looking for gum?”

“In our bedroom?” Sirius ran a hand through his hair.

James dropped his head. “I was snooping. Listen, I’m sorry I spoiled the surprise, but you’re getting a dog! That’s so exciting!”

“James.” Remus bit back a bubble of hysterical laughter that threatened to come out. “We’re not getting a dog.” 

James’s face scrunched in confusion. “Why do you have a dog collar then?”

Lily pulled her phone out of her pocket. “Hold on. Let me get this on video.” 

Sirius took a step closer, hands on his hips. “James, the collar is not for a dog.” 

If Remus hadn’t been completely mortified over the topic, the progression of realization on James’s face might have made up for it. Deep lines of confusion, followed by a spark in his eyes as he realized what else a dog collar could be for, wrapped up in wide-eyed surprise. Then, most horrifyingly, he turned to Remus.

“You wear a collar when you guys whoopdidoo?” On the last words, James dropped his voice to a harsh whisper that, somehow, made it worse. 

Lily laughed so hard that she hit the floor.

Remus felt his cheeks color red, and he buried his face in his hands with a groan. He turned toward the back door. “I’m leaving. I quit. This is it.” 

There was a sound behind them that Remus was pretty sure was Sirius thumping James on the head. “No, you arsehole. I do.” Lily cackled louder. 

Remus opened the back door to find Harry and Teddy excited jumping around, talking about how they were going to teach the dog to play fetch and wear one of those rescue packs like St. Bernards did on snow mountains, and Remus felt all the fight drain out of him. 

Arms wrapped around his waist from behind, and Sirius leaned his head against Remus’s shoulder. “We’re going to get a dog, aren’t we?”

Remus looked at him out of the side of his eye. “Are you going to tell him he doesn’t get a puppy?”

“I’m going to make James pay for it.” 

Remus turned and kissed his cheek. “I think we can get a lot more out of James than just that.”

Whereas in real life, Sir Nigel Bernard Hawthorne CBE (born April 5, 1929), was educated at St George's Grammar School, Cape Town, and later Cape Town University, the fictional character he's perhaps most famous for portraying, Sir Humphrey Appleby (in the BBC comedy series Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister), was educated at Winchester College and later read Classics at Balliol College, Oxford.

Sir Humphrey is the Holder of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (GCB), Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE), and the Royal Victoria Order (MVO). Being not only a fictional Old Wykehamist and also a fictional alumnus of Balliol with an MA (Oxon), he was often to be seen sporting a purple, white and blue Balliol tie; though in the series, the college was referred to as Baillie.

About all those Honours, as Sir Bernard Woolley (played by Derek Fowlds), famously explained: 'First you get the CMG, then the KCMG, then the GCMG; the Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George, Knight Commander of St Michael and St George, Knight Grand Cross of St Michael and St George. Of course, in the Service, CMG stands for Call Me God, KCMG for Kindly Call Me God, and GCMG is God Calls Me God!'

Nigel Hawthorne's final appearance as Sir Humphrey was in 'The Tangled Web' in 1988.

An intensely private person, Nigel was deeply upset at having been involuntarily outed as gay in 1995.

He died on December 6, 2001. His funeral service was held at St Mary's, the Parish Church of Thundridge, near Ware, Hertfordshire. The coffin had a wreath of white lilies and orchids. Trevor Bentham, Nigel's lifelong partner, was one of the pallbearers.

-I didn’t come up with Barty as a crow, Regulus’ various options, or Barty as a swan as those are popular (don’t know exact origin

-Marauders aren’t changing and not on the list since the characters are recognized in the fandom by their Animagus/Patronuses and characters are too ingrained in that to change

-Probably sticking with Lily as a doe but I felt like exploring her options anyway

-Dragon: powerful, leader, inspires respect and fear in opponents, requires talent

-Orca: a brave leader who isn’t afraid to stand up for beliefs, excellent communication

-Cheetah: fiery and confident, would do anything for their lifelong close friends, independent, common Slytherin patronus

-I picked out Cheetah for Marlene before I realized it sounded a lot like Dorcas

-She would probably have a large, powerful patronus

-Peacock: show offs, prideful patronuses who try to intimidate any potential threats, easily irritated and good friends keep them in control, but they can keep calm when the time calls for it.

-Marsh Harrier: witty, intelligent, think outside the box, creative, sneaky, can get themselves out of sticky situations

-I’m willing to guess Barty’s would change to Evan’s but it could be either way

-Crow makes sense but Peacock is funnier when I imagine not evil Barty trying to intimidate bad guys and strutting to attack

-Also his reaction and nicknames from the Slytherin Skittles

-But as a crow he could caw at bad guys for fun and it would blend in better

MARLENE~HIPPOGRIFF, LIONESS, HYENA

-Hippogriff: very powerful and dangerous, they have a loving side to the passionate and fierce personality; highly regarded by many.

-Lioness: confident in choices and themselves, protective

-Hyena: they are clever, creative, protective, and loyal, with a great sense of humor

-no clue which patronus would change between her and Dorcas

LILY~DOE, GREAT GREY OWL, CHESTNUT MARE

-Doe: love and protects whoever they love no matter the cost

-Great Grey Owl: excellent at listening, adaptive, strong morals, high standards, fiery when provoked, dominant personality

I love because I love, I love that I may love

From a sermon of St Bernard of Clairvaux

Love is sufficient of itself, it gives pleasure by itself and because of itself. It is its own merit, its own reward. Love looks for no cause outside itself, no effect beyond itself. Its profit lies in its practice. I love because I love, I love that I may love. Love is a great thing so long as it continually returns to its fountainhead, flows back to its source, always drawing from there the water which constantly replenishes it. Of all the movements, sensations and feelings of the soul, love is the only one in which the creature can respond to the Creator and make some sort of similar return however unequal it may be. For when God loves, all he desires is to be loved in return; the sole purpose of his love is to be loved, in the knowledge that those who love him are made happy by their love of him.

  The Bridegroom’s love, or rather the love which is the Bridegroom, asks in return nothing but faithful love. Let the beloved, then, love in return. Should not a bride love, and above all, Love’s bride? Could it be that Love not be loved?

  Rightly then does she give up all other feelings and give herself wholly to love alone; in giving love back, all she can do is to respond to love. And when she has poured out her whole being in love, what is that in comparison with the unceasing torrent of that original source? Clearly, lover and Love, soul and Word, bride and Bridegroom, creature and Creator do not flow with the same volume; one might as well equate a thirsty man with the fountain.

  What then of the bride’s hope, her aching desire, her passionate love, her confident assurance? Is all this to wilt just because she cannot match stride for stride with her giant, any more than she can vie with honey for sweetness, rival the lamb for gentleness, show herself as white as the lily, burn as bright as the sun, be equal in love with him who is Love? No. It is true that the creature loves less because she is less. But if she loves with her whole being, nothing is lacking where everything is given. To love so ardently then is to share the marriage bond; she cannot love so much and not be totally loved, and it is in the perfect union of two hearts that complete and total marriage consists. Or are we to doubt that the soul is loved by the Word first and with a greater love?
