Coming slowly to know his evil, or being catapulted into it ... was all the same. I wanted none of it finally. And, deserving nothing better, I closed up like a spider in the flame of a match. And even Armand who was my constant companion, and my only companion, existed at a great distance from me, beyond that veil which separated me from all living things, a veil which was a form of shroud. (IWTV, 1976)

Anyway our season tickets to the Muny (huge outdoor theater that shows big-budget musicals all through the summer) have already proven worthwhile and we're not even halfway through the list of shows
Have any of you even heard of Chess???? It's a political drama set against a backdrop of the Cold War, with the story focusing on the rivalry between two chess grandmasters from the US and the Soviet Union. There's also a tragic love story involved. And it's a MUSICAL. About CHESS.
The song "One Night in Bangkok"?? That one random 80s song you've definitely heard a million times before?? IT'S FROM THIS MUSICAL:
youtube
GOD, we already had high expectations going into this one and those were absolutely met and exceeded. We were discussing fix-it fic/sequel possibilities on our way home because the emotional journey was so good lmao. Those act 2 reprises... 😩👌 Highly recommend the show for anyone who might get the chance to see it!

Academics and scholars have vowed to boycott Columbia University over its repressive policies against protesting students in shocking scenes that have sparked a wider student movement for Palestine across the US.
Over the past 24 hours, student encampments have mushroomed in colleges - on the east coast, in particular - with more anticipated to begin over the next few days. Middle East Eye is aware of at least two other universities that are planning similar encampments which have not been announced yet.
Student encampments demanding divestment from companies involved in Israel's occupation of Palestinian land and "genocide" in Gaza have popped up at the Massachusetts Insitute of Technology (MIT); Tufts and Emerson in Boston; New York University and The New School in New York City; Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee; Yale University in Connecticut; University of California-Berkeley; The University of Michigan; Washington University in St Louis; and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[...]
The targeting of students, the attacks on academic freedom and the policing of speech at the university from administrators has also drawn condemnation from several academics and scholars with ties with Columbia.
On Monday, academic Marc Lamont Hill, presidential professor at CUNY, said he would be pulling out of his scheduled lecture from Columbia over the ongoing repression at the university.
Faculty at Columbia and Barnard College on Monday staged a walkout in support of students.
Hours earlier, the Graduate Center Program in English announced a full academic boycott of Columbia and Barnard College "until they reinstate suspended students and respond to their demands: transparency, divestment, liberation".
Several others have released public statements cutting ties with the prestigious university.

Happy birthday Josephine Baker!
Josephine Baker was born on 3 June 1906 in St. Louis, USA. She's known best for her career as a dancer, singer and actress. In 1925, she emigrated to France and took Paris by storm with her comic, energetic and provocative dancing - sometimes wearing nothing but a single ostrich feather on stage.
But there’s also another side to Josephine - during WWII, she was a spy for the French resistance, sneaking important information out of the country written on her sheet music in invisible ink, or pinned to her underwear.
She was also a life-member of the NAACP, travelling around the USA to campaign for civil rights, and speaking at the 1963 March on Washington.
Josephine was bisexual, having four husbands (or five, depending on how you’re counting) and many female lovers. She continued to perform up until her death in 1975.

So uh. Something not so chill happened tonight.
I MET LUCY. I FINALLY SAW LUCY. WHAT A GODDESS HOLY SHIT. Her voice was literally transcendent. And she was so nice, like sooo freaking sweet I couldn’t believe it. Killian was really amazing tonight too! And Matt said “Oh hello again” to me 😂 I guess I’ve left a pretty good impression on the cast lol.
But seriously I’m still reeling from all of this and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to process it normally.
