I saw an early screening of the Mean Girls movie last night, so here is a summary of my thoughts, comparing the movie musical to the Broadway musical, which I was lucky enough to see live in 2018!
Changed that I liked:
The usage of social media in the Broadway show made it very clear that it was written by adults who didn’t know much about Gen-Z. It was probably one of the worst parts of the show in my opinion. But Tina Fey must have done her research since 2018, because the way the movie uses TikTok, memes, vlogging, and FaceTime to push the story forward worked VERY well. I think there were some influencer cameos, but it didn’t feel they were included to show how “young and hip” they were, It actually added authenticity.
The diversity within the cast and changing last names to reflect the characters’ backgrounds (Karen Smith ➡️ Karen Shetty, Janis Sarkisian ➡️ Janis 'Imi'ike)
Cutting down “Meet the Plastics.” It’s a very exposition-heavy song and doesn’t need to be super long, even though the full version is quite catchy and fun.
All of the new jokes landed so well, probably because Tina Fey’s writing style is better suited for the screen as opposed to the stage.
This is more of a comparison of the musical vs. the original film, but a big change was The Plastics’ weaponized wokeness (which I talk about here).
The production design for most of the songs was very different. The stage musical has a lot of rock songs, which were changed to a pop sound for the movie. I personally prefer rock musicals, but it was a good way to give the movie a separate identity from its predecessor so it doesn’t risk becoming a carbon copy. It worked on some songs (“Someone Gets Hurt” and “World Burn”) but not on others (“A Cautionary Tale” and “Revenge Party”).
Cutting the joke about Regina’s ass being big. It was a very low-brow joke, which I’m not a fan of, and was just really immature. Thank God that was changed to her falling, which still shows her being embarrassed without her body being the joke.
Explicitly making Janis a lesbian! (It’s only implied in the stage show with “It’s not even true… I only have one butt”) And she goes to prom with a girl while Damien dances with a boy! ALSO THERE’S REJANIS LORE AND IT’S SO HEARTBREAKING I LOVE IT

Miss Norbury and Principal Duvall being a couple and owning a dog together!!!
As a low mezzo, I appreciated whoever decided to lower the key for “I’d Rather Be Me.” I felt very represented 🩷
Having Cady be raised in a single-parent household so it focuses in more on her relationship with her mom. Jenna Fischer was so motherly and sincere and brought a warmth to the movie. Their scene together near the end made me emotional (you’re never too old to ask your parent to stay with you until you fall asleep) (also this is my request to make jenna fischer my mom)
Changes that I didn’t like:
Cutting BOTH of Damian’s solos??? (SHE’S LEAVING!!!!!!!! JUST LIKE MY DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Cutting “More Is Better.” It wasn’t necessarily a memorable song, but it did give both Cady and Aaron more depth, both as separate characters and within their relationship.
While cutting some of the songs helped with pacing, cutting HALF of the score made me forget that it was a musical sometimes, which sucks because I really like musicals!!!
Other stuff:
The movie was marketed horribly. One of my friends didn’t even know it was gonna be a musical because there were no songs in the trailers 💀 (Also, this isn’t just a Mean Girls problem. The Color Purple also didn’t have any songs in the trailer. I didn’t even know Wonka was a musical until I saw it in theaters, so that was a bit of a shock.) If you’re producing a musical movie, maybe your focus groups should be musical fans, because that’s still a HUGE market.
Auliʻi Cravalho’s voice is STUNNING! She and Jaquel Spivey had great chemistry and their friendship felt so genuine!
The opening and ending transitions from the garage were everything to me
The EDITING
Angourie Rice is a great actor and fit Cady perfectly… except for her singing. Out of the entire cast she was easily the weakest in terms of vocals and it was pretty disappointing since she’s the LEAD. I could barely hear her in the new song “What Ifs” because of how quiet and breathy she was. I think it’s a better written song compared to “Roar” though.

I cannot stress enough how funny this movie was. I was probably laughing louder than everyone else in the theatre.
I lost my shit during “Meet the Plastics” when Regina unzipped her jacket and Cady was staring at her boobs. She’s just like me fr 🏳️‍🌈
I know that Regina is a horrible person but I couldn’t find it in me to dislike her in the slightest. She just served too much cunt 😩
Christopher Briney is a good actor, but I don't think he was the right choice for Aaron Samuels. I would hate to ridicule anyone for their looks, but it still plays an important part in casting. Aaron is supposed to be a somewhat naive, wholesome, hot jock (and Regina has high standards, so he better be a fucking model). Briney is definitely a cutie, but gives off “smoldering badboy with a secret sensitive side” energy, which isn’t what Aaron should be.
The fantasy sequences (Stupid With Love, Revenge Party, October 3rd). I LOVE when movie musicals USE the medium to tell stories in a way that they can’t on a stage!!!
THE CHOREO!!! Everyone freezing then shaking in “Someone Get Hurt” AHHHH that entire number was HYPNOTIZING!!!!!!!!!!! My friend told me the choreographer’s name is Kyle Hanagami, so shout out to him. (also reneé rapp was so fucking hot while singing that oh my lord)
I will be calling my pimples “face breasts” from now on (avantika ilysm)

“I’d Rather Be Me” was so much fun and I felt so fucking empowered. And the transition from the song to the bus was just *chef’s kiss*

Overall, the movie was not perfect, but the Broadway show already had plenty of flaws, so it’s understandably how that would affect the adaptation. I still a LOT of fun and would definitely see it again. Go stream Snow Angel by Reneé Rapp. i love women 🥰🥰🥰

Anyway researching about horse breeding- started biting and gnawing and frothing at the mouth upon learning that the stallions are specifically trained to mount that stupid dummy mare. The idea that Rodimus is this young and horny centaur whom, upon the slightest hair trigger, will get all aroused and immediately start humping that thing. He's sooo well trained when it comes to breeding cos he's desperate. He wants to stick his spike in something so bad.
I don't know why but the idea that he's been trained to immediately rush over to what is just an inanimate structure for him to mount and desperately trying to shove his spike in is driving me crazy. He's panting and whimpering as he fails to even push his aching spike in, missing the opening and uselessly slipping against the outer surface. He's so horny he's just wildly rutting his hips and not bothering to aim and making this worse for himself.
Of course this isn't really useful to his keepers tho. Rodimus is one of those prized racehorses. They want to breed him. His transfluid is worth a lot of shanix on the market. And just having him randomly dump his load at unpredictable times isnt really useful cos, 1. they need to collect it immediately upon ejaculation and 2. other breeders are usually only buying during certain seasons. So when they want to collect his transfluid, it has to be something controlled.
That's where his silly little crush comes in.
The centaurs are usually housed individually so they don't hurt (or breed) each other, so it's not like they always have the opportunity to interact. But they do get chill time where they just get to be outside. Chillin. Together. The handlers do want to keep the horses happy and healthy after all.
Whenever they are outside, Rodimus will always, without fail, approach Ultra Magnus at least once. Magnus is a much larger breed, built for strength rather than speed. It's almost funny to see Roddy prancing over to the much larger centaur, clearly trying to show off, trotting and swishing his tail at the other. Magnus always looks unimpressed, but never pushes Rodimus away when the little racehorse presses up against him and nuzzles against his flank.
So when it comes time and they want to breed Rodimus, it's Magnus they have in the stock. Oh they know Magnus hates being in there- he hates the idea that he's being used for something so... so undignified. But he has a respect for authority that has him obediently standing in there as instructed, valve exposed.
When they bring Roddy in, he's bitted and reigned so they can direct him. The moment he lays optics on that plush valve he's stomping and rearing up on his hind legs. His handler has to tug on his reigns to bring him back under control before he starts just running circles around them, and encourages him towards the 'mare'.
Rodimus really only needs a little nudge to head straight towards Magnus. The difference in their frame size means he doesn't even need to lean over that far to have Magnus' valve in his face. He's already panting, heated air escaping his intake as he pushes his nasal ridge against the mesh and sniffs.
Despite knowing what to expect, Magnus still makes a noise in surprise when the colder metal presses against his sensitive valve, and then is immediately assaulted with hot ex-vents. His hooves click on the ground as he takes a few steps to steady himself, trying his best to remain still as Rodimus continues to all but push his entire faceplate against Magnus' valve.
Rodimus knows he's not supposed to touch- but he's got his servos on Magnus' aft anyway, supporting his weight as he continues to take in the heady scent of the other's valve. His servos slide further down until they stop either side of Magnus' valve lips. He pushes, spreading those lips as much as he can without actually touching and groans at the sight of the exposed channel, the winking port making his interface panels finally click and retract.
The moment Roddy's spike is released, it's fully pressurised instantly, and his reigns are tugged. He whines as he's pulled away from Magnus, but doesn't protest. He knows he won't be allowed to breed Magnus anyway. But his spike aches, twitching and bumping against the underside of his frame, leaving a sticky string of fluid hanging from the tip of his spike.
A little tug in the right direction and his training kicks in as he very nearly gallops just those few strides to the dummy, panting and scrambling to mount it. He still misses a few times- but the moment his spike slips into the sleeve he keens, the warm pressure finally- finally- around his throbbing spike as he mindlessly ruts into it.
Magnus would never admit to it, but his optics are glued to Rodimus as he breeds the dummy with abandon, moaning and whimpering as his spike thrusts in and out of that- of that thing.
Really, it's over quickly. Rodimus is already so high strung, it only takes a few moments of wild thrusts before he crashes into his overload with a cry, transfluid spurting out and into the false valve.
When his handler gently tugs on his reigns again, he's tired and lets out a soft groan before pushing himself off the dummy, plopping back onto all four legs and allows himself to be slowly led out of the barn. Only after Rodimus is completely clear of the area do they release Magnus, guiding him back to his stable. Magnus' panels slide shut, but the lubricant that had already slid down his hind legs is evident.
oughh god this is so good. Just the sight of Magnus’ valve made Rodimus soooo horny… he would’ve fought back until they’d let him breed that plush valve all on his own, but he was just too horny to think about that. The dummy mare will have to do, he just needed to overload. What really upset him though was that he knew the transfluid was not going to Magnus…
I bet this makes things a little awkward when they see each other around the farm… Then again, it would be kind of funny if this led to Rodimus straight up trying to mount Ultra Magnus when they’re allowed to be together. It’s really hard, he’s a small, sleek race-horse and Ultra Magnus is so huge, he can’t really mount him in any way that matters, his spike doesn’t properly reach his valve… But if Magnus’ resolve cracked and he ended up… kneeling, or laying down, that would make it entirely possible for Rodimus to slip his enthusiastic spike right into his valve.
Of course, the handlers wouldn’t let that happen, though. Probably.

Today was a stressful day, but Bright Oak is so relaxing to draw! I also thought I'd go with a trans headcanon for Big Mac in this universe because… well cause I like them! And yeah no Sugar Belle relationship, I'm just not a huge fan of her design and she's from the later seasons that I'm less familiar with.

Name: Bright Oak Nicknames: Oak, Bright Pronouns: He/him Age: Adult Parents: Cheerilee and Orchard Blossom (Big Mac) Siblings: none Cutie Mark: Wood carving and family Bio: Big, cheerful, and helpful! Bright Oak is Cheerilee and Orchard Blossom's only son and adore him. Bright Oak might not be sharpest tool in the shed, but he's always willing to drop everything to help someone in need. He's high energy and always makes time to do his fair share of farm work before heading off to his wood carving stall in the morning markets of Ponyville. He specializes in small, intricate objects but can also make a pretty mean rocking chair. He came out to his parents as a trans stallion when he was a teenager. His parents were a little baffled, but supported him wholeheartedly and dove into researching more about the subject. Through the long study sessions Blossom resonated with the material more and more and just a year after Bright Oak came out, tentatively came out of the closet herself to her very supportive family. Oak was delighted to have his mother join him in their transition.
Relationship to his parents: Bright Oak is very close to both his parents, being their only son. It's a bit unusual for an Apple pairing to only have one foal, but Cheerilee was pretty much done with pregnancy after giving birth to her very large son. He and Cheerilee often walk to the schoolhouse together in the mornings when he's heading to market, and of course Bright Oak is 1000% supportive of Blossom's coming out.
Relationship to his cousins: For some reason, he and Skyline became instant rivals as soon as they could walk. They're both aggressively cheerful and energetic ponies, and that energy tends to clash sometimes. They often compete to see who can buck the most apples or carry the heaviest loads. But Skyline was also the first pony Bright Oak came out to as trans and she gave him the encouragement to let his parents know. Bright Oak and Buck get along well, though sometimes both Bright Oak and Skyline's beaming energy can be a little much for Buck.
But he does tend to annoy Clover though, in the same way that most of the Apple family does; he'll see her struggling with a chore and just come of and cheerfully pluck it out of her hooves, not realizing he's just made an enemy for life with this decision.
Relationship with Apple Bloom: Bright Oak works a lot with his aunt, who has a similar crafting based cutie mark. They actually share a large studio space on the farm and often critique each other's work.
Fun Facts:
Bright Oak got his name both from Orchard Blossom's stories about her parents and from his mentor Burnt Oak! He actually got his cutie mark when Burnt Oak gave him a wood carving tool and log to distract the kid when he was babysitting Bright Oak. Yes Orchard Blossom totally cried when Bright Oak told them what his new name was.
Bright Oak is the oldest of Apple family children, being about two years older then Skyline.

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (735,000) and Adults 25-54 (142,000) during the week of Aug. 7, 2023, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” took the top spot, beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in overall viewers and the key Adult news demo for the 14th consecutive week.
“Nightline” was up over the previous week in Total Viewers (+4% - 735,000 vs. 708,000).
Season to date, “Nightline” is growing compared to the same point last season in Total Viewers (+2% – 883,000 vs. 863,000). In addition, “Nightline” leads CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.
