SG-1 fans! Big Finish has re-released the Stargate audiodramas, which include both SG-1 and Atlantis.

I accidentally started at the end for SG-1, but I doubt that matters much. There’s an overarching arc for the set, but the individual stories stand perfectly well on their own. Vol. 3 features Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), Vala Mal Doran (Claudia Black), and a host of new characters. Vala and Daniel are very true to their TV selves, the stories are well-written, the sound effects are fairly on-point, and basically the whole experience of listening to the set was a delight.

Most of the DEFCON 1 situations happen within the span of like, an hour, and are largely confined to more important, dramatic places (the gate room, the General’s private office, other planets) and so it’s not entirely unrealistic for Stiles to run out for Starbucks and return to find that he’s totally missed an attempt to bomb the crap out of the entire planet by megalomaniacal alien religious extremists.

Heart and Soul

A little Stargate SG-1 ficlet I found while going through old files. Can be read as either Jack & Daniel friendship, or Jack/Daniel if you prefer.

Heart & Soul (also at AO3) 214 words

Daniel is all heart and soul, right there for everyone to see. It worries Jack, more than he wants to let on, masking it with irritation when Daniel runs off, half-cocked, to save every Tom, Dick, and Harry they run into on an offworld mission.

He wants to, needs to, believe in the best in people the galaxy over. Jack hasn't been able to believe that for decades now. Somehow, despite all Daniel has seen, all he has experienced, he still retains that youthful hope, retains it with an iron grip and anyone who tries to take it away from him suffers a terrible fate.

So Jack watches and wards and does his best to protect Daniel from himself, because when his hope is ultimately dashed, the worst backlash will be directed inward, because even then, there must be a reason, it must have been someone's fault and if he is the last one there, it must be him. So Jack puts himself out there, directs Daniel's anger at himself, just as he would to protect his team from a goa'uld.

The anger in his eyes hurts. But it is focused outward and at him and he can live with that. When Daniel loses his faith, Jack isn't sure either of them will survive.

Not only was Aladdin a trip down childhood memory lane, but I also finally managed to figure out the contents of this random tape that has “Return of the Jedi” handwritten on a label and then crossed out.  I’ve carried it from apartment to apartment, but I’ve long since forgotten what’s actually on it.

It seems to be a multi tape:

1) A video project I did back in high school, a music video to “Bodies” by Drowning Pool.  I remember making this, and I’d forgotten it was on this tape.

2) The episode “Lost City, Part 2″ from season seven of Stargate: SG-1.  Plus the last few minutes of an episode of Tremors: The Series that was apparently on before it (It had Armin Shimerman!).

3) The series finale of Angel, plus the news program which aired afterwards.

This is like a “greatest hits” of my video and TV projects from the mid-00s.
