Rationale NB Akademie Std Edition and its versatile quality was the customer’s chosen starting point for the development process of an exclusive custom typeset for an already existing and internationally acclaimed brand. The aim of the new typeset is to replace Helvetica with an exclusive typeface — adding personality while maintaining a clean and timeless esthetic. The design process included a detailed brand analysis in order to translate the DNA of the customer’s brand into the new corporate typeset.

More information using less space The developed basic typeset includes Light, Regular and Bold and is defined by a space saving quality when compared to Helvetica. The OpenType Pro Edition includes 470+ glyphs per weight supporting 88+ latin based languages. The commissioned limited edition book, designed in 2018, documents the entire development process for the basic typeset (Light, Regular, Bold) over the period February — November 2017.

DU™️ #Repost @neubauberlin ・・・ DUTT-181 (Ltd Ed) + DUEP-181 Series (Clear Vinyl) Designed by Neubau, Berlin — Neubau’s design for Detroit Underground’s DU-181 Series is a reference to Stefan Gandl’s initial vinyl jacket design for the record label from 2004. The generic 12 inch cover is developed as an interpretation of a Detroit city map to topographically locate the label and put its audio releases on vinyl in context with its physical environment. While the 2004 edition was dominated by the colour blue, the 2008 edition saw the blue replaced by black ink. The DU-181 design developed in 2018 presents a refined vector map soley in black and white ink working as a visual metaphor for reduction and the label’s contrasting audio visual output. Gandl’s DU-181 cover design concept presents a daylyight version and a graphically inverted night version of Detroit’s map. The familiar A and B side is replaced by a D (Detroit) and U (Underground) side. As with Neubau’s previous cover designs for Detroit Underground, the DU-181 design will be used as a generic jacket for a total of 12 releases. An index of 12 map typical patterns and symbols printed on the cover represent a visual reference for each release. The collaboration between Detroit Undergound’s label founder Kero and Neubau comes full circle when map index symbols such as Roads, Buidlings, Railways, Rivers, Swamps etc. also define the conceptual theme for each track release. DU-181 Highways is the first release of the new series including a total of five tracks with titles such as Fisher, Davison, Lodge, Southfield and Chrysler refering to actual main arteries of the Motor City. They were created by designer Stefan Gandl and his Neubau team. The NBW Data Archive contains all objects of the “Neubau Welt” print edition as editable EPS-Files (i.e.: Macromedia Freehand, Adobe Illustrator). Reminiscent of a digital Letraset, “Neubau Welt” contains everything any designer could possibly need but couldn’t find. Unlike ClipArt, the smorgasbord of objects are editable and can be enlarged indefinitely. This also makes them extremely useful for architects and other creatives, who can integrate them into their presentations and visual models. NB Akademie™ is a contemporary grotesque type system designed by Stefan Gandl comprising of 20 styles: Light, Light-Italic, Mono Light, Mono Light-Italic, Regular, Italic, Mono, Mono-Italic, Medium, Medium-Italic, Mono Medium, Mono Medium-Italic, Bold, Bold-Italic, Mono Bold, Mono Bold-Italic, Black, Black-Italic, Mono Black, Mono Black-Italic.

The typeface’s influences and naming go way back to legendary German type designer Ferdinand Theinhardt and his revolutionary typeset ‘Royal Grotesk’ (1880) designed for the publications of the “Königlich-Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin”. After selling his own type foundry ‘Ferd. Theinhardt Schriftgiesserei Berlin’ Theinhardt’s ‘Royal Grotesk’ later became internationally known and successful as Berthold’s Akzidenz Grotesk (1896) — the godmother of all modern grotesque typefaces.

NB Akademie™ will be available as OpenType Std format and as OpenType Pro Edition supporting 102+ latin based languages.
 The typeset will be exclusively available for print, web and app-use with special licenses for ebook- and OEM-embedding as well as (Small Business) Broadcast licenses via NBL starting on 31st of October 2016.
