[NEWS UPDATE] REAL⇔FAKE: The Trailer for “REAL⇔FAKE” has been Released

SUMMARY

The story begins with the sudden disappearance of the songstress/diva Akane (Aoi Shouta).

It had been announced that Akane, who possesses the voice of an angel, has joined “Stellar CROWNS”, which is a project of a new unit that has gathered the nation’s stars, including actors, idols and singers.

As the news of Akane’s disappearance makes waves in the society, a suspicious document reaches Akane’s agency:

“Akane is alive. The criminal is one of the project group members.”

To flush out the criminal, the president of Akane’s agency hires the film director, Moriya Hidetoshi (Someya Toshiyuki), and under the guise of making a movie documentary about Stellar CROWNS, he will follow the 6 members in their daily lives as they begin living in a shared house as part of this documentary.

Description of Sato Ryuji’s role:

Sato Ryuji will play the character of Suzuki Kakeru, the vocalist of a popular band. Inspired to become a singer after listening to Akane’s songs, he applied to the same agency. He joins the Stellar CROWNS project after Akane disappears.

Kakeru is awkward/clumsy, but honourable and forthright, and even when he’s in front of the camera, he cannot create a different persona.

He is roommates with Sawase Rin (Ozawa Ren), and classmates with Ikuta Yuusuke (Ueda Keisuke). Ikuta is actually two years older than Kakeru, but was absent from school due to his pulmonary disease, and thus, they’re now classmates.

Binge-Watching: Psycho-Pass, Day 4, Episodes 16-18

In which the show’s entire world is flipped on its head, I start rooting for the villain like never before, and everyone is ten different flavors of kickass. This show is really fucking good, guys.

Taking Down the Madman

Episode 16 felt like a turning point for the show, the Act 2 climax that reshuffles the board to prepare for things to really explode moving into the final stretch. At long last, we catch up to the show’s first scene, with Kogami and Makishima staring each other down at the top of the Sybil Tower. The build-up and execution of their confrontation wasn’t especially deep, but it didn’t need to be. We just had a massive stretch of in-depth societal analysis with the riots, and we’re about to get into even more heady territory, so this pivot point can settle for just being cool. And hot damn, it’s cool. Pretty much everyone gets at least one really awesome moment, from Kagari taking down the bastard with a nail gun to Akane using the previously-useless helmet as an improvised bludgeon to finally take the silver-haired prick down. But the centerpiece was Kogami’s bare-knuckled brawl with Makishima, and that was really fucking cool. I’m not that fond of the show’s visual aesthetic overall, but the fight choreography and direction here was stellar.

But the triumph of this moment doesn’t last long, as Kagari gets caught up and possibly wiped off the map as he and Makishima’s partner stumble into the truth behind the Sybil System.

Sybil Revealed

You have to be careful with big twists. Anyone can pull something out of their ass to momentarily throw the audience for a loop, but if there’s no meaning behind the new information revealed it will feel cheap and pointless (*cough* Guilty Crown *cough*). If you really want to knock your audience off their feet, you have to make the surprise count for something. And the reveal of what the Sybil System truly is just about knocked by goddamn socks off.

It turns out, the so-called perfect computer algorithm was just a front. It was only sold to the people as such so that they would accept it. The real Sybil System isn’t based off technology. It’s formed from the collective consciousness of hundreds of human minds, separated from their bodies and operating on the same neural network. But not just any brains: aberrant brains, brains that the system rejects, brains that can “view humanity from an emotional distance and judge them objectively”. Brains like the guy who murdered Kogami’s partner at Makishima’s request all those years ago. Through this collective effort of competing individual though processes, the system can supposedly reach the most objective answer it can about someone’s nature, giving them their Psycho-Pass hue and Crime Coefficient number, while still accounting for the irregularities of human nature.

In other words, the Sybil System plans your entire life for you, decides arbitrarily if you’re allowed to be part of society, and then takes the “weirdos” and “criminals” who don’t fit its perfect little plan and makes them part of the system that rejected them in the first place. This isn’t just a society that demonizes innocent people and predestines them for failure and rejection: this is a society that actively turns the people it enslaves into agents of their own oppression. That is fucked up. That is a million more times more fucked up than I could have ever predicted. And it’s so fucking hypocritical: the Sybil minds were too “dangerous” to leave on the streets, yet perfectly acceptable to determine the makeup of society. Al last, Sybil is laid bare before us: a cannibalistic system that chews up those it’s displeased by as fuel to keep evolving, until maybe one day it will become evolved enough to stop fucking up so often. I don’t think I have ever hated a fictional concept as deeply and vehemently as I do this system.

FUCK YOU LADY

What’s more, it turns out that the Boss Lady Kansai is a cyborg; or rather, many cyborgs, each one acting as a vessel for the collective voice of Sybil. And the lengths she goes to in these episodes to keep her perfect little system safe prove just how morally bankrupt she really is. Kagari finds about the system, so he has to die. The blame is pinned on his friends in Akane’s task force for letting him “go rogue” so she can keep Kogami under lock and key. All to keep him from killing Makishima, a known mass murderer, because she thinks such an obvious psychopath would be much more beneficial to society if he helped run it. This system doesn’t care about people. It never did. It only cares about itself. And Kansai is the walking embodiment of that selfishness, complete with the power to force Dominaters to act beyond their chosen lethality range if the very same system she’s a part of isn’t harsh enough on them for her liking. Fuck you, and fuck your broken, shitty world.

It’s a good thing, then, that Makishima wants no part of her bullshit. Watching him destroy the copy of her on the helicopter was one of the most viscerally satisfying bad guy escapes I’ve seen in a while. Yeah, there’s no way around it: I am actively rooting for him to succeed now. yYs, he’s killed countless people and indirectly led to the deaths of countless more, but on a level of scale, Sybil has done far worse for far longer. I want him to tear this broken society down, to destroy the perfectly ordered world with his unending zeal for life. Then, perhaps, his task accomplished, he will let finally let Kogami catch up to him and deliver him to justice.

Kogami’s Choice

Speaking of which, Kogami has well and truly broken my heart this time around. Which is weird, because he was never one of my favorite characters in the bunch, but he really comes into his own here. He knows the law can’t catch Makishima, and it doesn’t want to punish him for his crimes. So he’s leaving behind the detective work and going rogue, working outside the law to kill the bastard who the law can’t touch. His final letter to Akane, acknowledging his own selfishness and urging her to never lose faith in her ideals for a better and just world, damn near had me in tears. Their dynamic is really the beating heart at this show’s core, the push and pull between doing what is right and doing what is just in a world where those two are always at odds. It’s that kind of emotional intellect that makes Urobuchi more than just a despair-glorifying edgelord: he understands not just the complexities of conflicting belief systems, but how people relate to that conflict and try to understand it.

And as we rush towards the finale, it’s clear that all our protagonists’ conflicting desires have one point of agreement: it’s time to kick Sybil to the curb. Ginoza tried to smuggle Kogami out from under the system’s nose because even he recognized the hypocrisy at play with not letting him on the case. And when that failed, Akane rejected the system’s bid to kill him by hitting him with a paralyzer instead, a moment that had me literally shouting in triumph. Even Shion gave Kogami a PP-canceling helmet to keep him safe and hidden for the six days until the system reboots and accounts for that discrepancy. Kogami has the emotional backing of all his friends in his illegal quest. And whether he likes it or not, both he and Makishima are working to destroy the system that crippled them both. I don’t know how this will all shake out in the end, but I can’t fucking wait to find out.

Odds and Ends

-God may suck, but being the devil doesn’t fix that. If Kagari’s really dead, at least he delivered one hell of a quote on the way out.

-Akane trying and failing to bring herself to kill Makishima was hauntingly powerful. Even after all the pain she’s been though, she can’t give up on her hopes for a better world.

Anisong Fantasy Live in SG Vol 1 Report - Beyond Phenomenal Concert!

It’s been two days since the concert ended and I’m still having post concert depression. So last Saturday, I attended Anisong Fantasy Live Vol 1 in Singapore which featured stunning lineup of GARNiDELiA, ELISA, Takigawa Alisa, Luna Haruna, Kalafina & Aimer. Since the lineup featured anisong artists, I’m quite familiar with all of them and their songs~ Also, I’ve been always a fan of Kalafina hence, it was like a dream came true when I saw them TT_TT

PRE ANISONG CONCERT REPORT

The whole morning of 18th March, I couldn’t focus on doing anything at all. At 4pm, I left the house and head down to the venue earlier to get some merchandise and meet up with my friends. These friends are actually Kalafina & Fictionjunction fans that I managed to contact over the net. Arrived at the venue, I went straight to the merchandise section and bought - Kalafina LIVE THE BEST 2015 “Red Day” & “Blue Day” Tote Bag & “Kalafina with Strings” Christmas Premium LIVE TOUR 2016 Plastic Folder. I wanted to get more items from the other artists but most of them are sold out ><

After that, I went ahead to meet up with my friends. Despite my first time meeting with everyone, we all managed to warm up with each other through our common interest of Kalafina. We also had a huge banner to write our messages. It was really a great sight to see that there are alot of Kalafina fans in Singapore! After everyone wrote their messages, we placed the banner at the gifts area and hoping that it will reach Kalafina safe and sound.

ANISONG CONCERT REPORT

At 6:50pm, I went to the hall to find my seat and honestly at that point of time, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I was seated at the extreme left of the front row A. I had an amazing view as there wasn’t any heads to block my view and a direct view on the singers! BLESS THE VIEW AND ALL THAT WAITING FOR CONCERT TICKET DURING AFA DAY 2!

In the opening, there was a special footage of ClariS concert performance. I’m guessing that they will be one of the guest for Anisong Fantasy Live Volume 2, who knows?

GARNiDELiA

The concert kicked off with GARNiDELiA as the opening act and they really geared up the audience! With MARiA’s powerful vocals and the band’s energetic performance, I was already in the trance! Able to see MARiA so close was an experience and she’s extremely pretty with her stage outfit. Gokuraku Jodo is my current favourite song from GARNiDELiA and the band delivered it really well. Props to MARiA for singing and dancing to Gokuraku Jodo!

The last time I watched ELISA live was back in 2013 during AFA Valrave Night concert and being able to hear her live again was amazing. Her live vocals were simply beautiful from her performance of ex: tella to REALISM, despite having technical issue with the sound at first. Also, her English interaction to the audience were adorable!

When Luna Haruna appeared on stage, she brought a fun vibe alongside with her! She was totally adorable with her stage outfit! She had this very lovely and bubbly personality as seen during the interaction with audience. Though I wished that she sang her debut song, Sora wa Takaku Kaze wa Utau from Fate/Zero ending. Also, she sang one of my favourite song, Startear and it was a stellar performance with strong vocals.

SPECIAL COLLABORATION STAGE 1 - Takigawa Alisa X ELISA X Luna Haruna X GARNiDELiA

Who knew that we could see such collaboration happened? The first collaboration featured Takigawa Alisa X ELISA and the second collaboration featured Luna Haruna x GARNiDELiA. I personally think that Alisa X ELISA voices doesn’t really suit each other for duet but nevertheless it was a good performance. Haruna x GARNiDELiA performance was really upbeat and their voices had good chemistry. The last song for the collaboration stage 1 featured Alisa X ELISA X Haruna X MARiA and overall it was an energetic all-girl performance!!

AIMER’S PERFORMANCE AND VOCALS WAS SO SURREAL!!! ISTG I NEARLY TEARED HEARING HER PERFORMANCE AND IT WAS SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL. Throughout her performance, she was only accompanied by a piano and I was definitely in awe ;A; This was my 2nd time hearing Aimer live and she sounded less nervous/shaky compared to her 1st live in SG during AFA2015. As always, her English was fluent and she mentioned about loving Singapore’s night scenery.

Aimer: I want my songs to inspire you in the future.

Overall, her performance was just pure eargasm!! I honestly don’t mind if she come to Singapore for her own concert and I know I will definitely attend!!

THIS IS THE PART WHERE I HAD MY EYES BURSTING WITH TEARS! When the music started playing, my heart was literally beating in excitement. I was holding Kalafina LIVE THE BEST 2015 “Blue Day” Towel in that hopes that the members will take notice of it. AND THEY DID! During the encore, Keiko was saying about how she saw some fans holding Kalafina concert towel and she felt grateful towards the fans!

For the 1st song - Magia, Kalafina wore beautiful kimono-like robe and they revealed their 2nd outfit during One Light. Hikaru and Wakana were mostly at my left side of the stage. I WAS FREAKING OUT THAT HIKARU MET MY EYES DURING THE ONE LIGHT PERFORMANCE, SAW MY KALAFINA TOWEL AND SMILED!!

Kalafina closed their segment by singing Sprinter and I WAS CRYING INSIDE BECAUSE OF KARA NO KYOUKAI FEELS! I sang my heart out, following to the lyrics of the song ;AAA; KALAFINA’s performance was truly mesmerizing and given the chance to watch it live was a dream come true!!

SPECIAL COLLABORATION STAGE 2 - Kalafina X Aimer

THIS COLLABORATION WAS SIMPLY BEYOND WORDS!! I can’t describe that feeling when Kalafina and Aimer were singing each other song. Seeing them both on the same stage was honestly remarkable. IT WAS EXTRA MAGICAL AND THAT MOMENT IS SO PRECIOUS!!! I honestly can’t describe how beautiful their vocals blended together ;A; Aimer started singing Believe’s first verse and when Kalafina started to harmonise, I had goosebumps!!

Their interaction with the audience was fun as well! As Aimer came for Singapore for 3 times and Kalafina only came for 2 times, Kalafina asked Aimer for any recommendation spots.

Kalafina: Do you have recommendation spots?

Aimer: Last time I came here (speaking in Japanese)

Keiko: /trying to translate Aimer’s speech through actions/ WWWW

Aimer: I went to Botanic Garden. It’s a flower garden and it was really wild.

Kalafina: Wah, we want to go!

After the interaction, Kalafina mentioned that since Aimer sang their song so its Kalafina’s turn to sing Aimer’s song. IT WAS ANOTHER MASTERPIECE :’)))

Kalafina x Aimer was honestly the perfect way to ended off Anisong Fantasy Live. IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY FOR THIS CONCERT!!

POST ANISONG CONCERT REPORT

I was still feeling surreal after the concert ended. Some of the audience were waiting for group photo with the anisong artists and I didn’t, since my seat wasn’t picked during the lucky draw ;A; But Kalafina and Aimer weren’t part of the group photo so I don’t feel too sad about it. 

Anyways, this concert will forever etched in my memory. Also, VIP ticket holders were given an autographed printed poster and I shall treasure that. Below are my loots:

ALL IN ALL, ITS BEEN AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE ATTENDING THIS CONCERT. THANK YOU SOZO AND SONY MUSIC FOR MAKING THIS HAPPENED. THANK TO ALL THE ARTISTS AND BAND MEMBERS AS WELL!!~~
