Jimin didn’t smile. Her eyes were locked on the mirror—on Minjeong’s reflection standing beside yours.

You turned back to grab your water bottle, missing the glance Minjeong sent in Jimin’s direction. It wasn’t smug exactly—just confident. Like she knew exactly where the pressure point was, and she was pressing it gently.

Jimin crossed her arms. “Let’s take five.”

Minjeong nodded, heading toward the corner to sip her drink. But her eyes lingered just a little too long on you as you sat near your bag, humming the melody under your breath.

The moment you looked up and smiled at her, she smiled back like it was instinct.

And Jimin, watching from the other side of the room, felt her stomach twist.

Because for all the ways she’d trained herself to be still, to be composed—Minjeong was still winning the one thing Jimin hadn’t dared reach for.

Yet.

After the intense practice session, the room quieted as the music faded out, and the atmosphere shifted from focused intensity to a brief respite. You stretched your arms over your head, releasing a sigh, and glanced over at the others. Jimin had already gone to grab her water bottle, while Minjeong leaned casually against the wall, arms crossed, watching.

You wiped the sweat from your brow. “Alright, break time. Let’s go over the research again. We need to nail down the theme before our next full run-through.”

Minjeong straightened up immediately, her eyes gleaming with curiosity. “What’s the theme, exactly? I didn’t get the full brief when I joined.”

You looked toward Jimin, who had already started pulling out her notebook, flipping through pages with a frown.

“This piece is all about identity,” you explained, leaning against the bench. “It’s about how we express ourselves—individually and collectively—through movement. The research focuses on how our bodies tell stories of our personal histories, our culture, and how those identities are shaped by both internal and external forces.”

Minjeong nodded slowly. “Sounds deep.”

“It is,” Jimin added, not looking up from her notebook. “The choreo should reflect a journey—one where each dancer moves through different phases of self-discovery, sometimes fighting it, sometimes embracing it. We’re exploring the tension between what’s expected of us and what we choose for ourselves.”

Minjeong raised an eyebrow, eyes flicking between the two of you. “Okay, so this isn’t just about dancing… it’s about telling a story with our bodies, right?”

“Exactly,” you replied. “Each segment represents a different phase in that process. We’re supposed to reflect different struggles, different realizations that come when we question the norms we’ve been told to live by.”

Minjeong’s gaze shifted toward Jimin, who was still scribbling notes in the corner of the page, eyes narrowed as she processed the material.

“Hmm. Sounds like something I could sink my teeth into,” Minjeong said, grinning. “Especially the part about fighting against expectations.”

You chuckled, but there was an edge in Minjeong’s voice that made you pause. It was almost too eager.

Jimin didn’t look up, but her tone was tight. “The fight against expectations isn’t something to celebrate. It’s about grappling with who you are versus what people want you to be. That’s not a simple, easy thing.”

Minjeong smirked, a flash of challenge in her eyes. “I never said it was simple, Jimin. But maybe that’s the part that’s worth exploring.” She glanced toward you. “I mean, what’s the fun in a dance if you’re not allowed to break the rules?”

The comment hung in the air between them, thickening the tension. Jimin’s pen stopped moving.

You caught the undercurrent between them but tried to steer the conversation back on track. “That’s the point of the choreography,” you interjected. “We’re supposed to show the struggle of identity. The push and pull between freedom and restriction. We’ll each have our own moments to shine, but we need to stay true to the theme.”

Minjeong’s smile softened, but there was still something playful in her eyes. “Got it. A little rebellion with a purpose.” Her gaze flicked to Jimin again, just long enough for Jimin to notice, her jaw tightening slightly as their eyes met. “Sounds like the perfect fit for me.”

Jimin’s eyes darkened, her voice low. “We’re all part of the same performance. No one should be standing out more than the others.”

Minjeong’s smile only widened, but she said nothing, letting the silence linger as she took a sip of her water. You shifted uncomfortably, not quite sure how to break the tension.

“Right,” you said, your voice a little too bright. “So, we need to focus on how to express resistance versus acceptance in the movements. That’s what we’ve been building on. Every step should feel intentional, like we’re pulling against something or pushing through an obstacle.”

Jimin looked up now, her gaze sharp. “Exactly. We’ve been using the transitions to symbolize moments of breakthrough—where we step into a new phase of understanding. It’s subtle but needs to be clear enough for the audience to feel.”

Minjeong raised her eyebrows. “Breakthroughs, huh? You’re serious about this, aren’t you?”

Jimin didn’t answer immediately. She just held Minjeong’s gaze for a moment before shifting her attention back to the notes in front of her.

You felt the quiet pressure building again. You had to admit—it was hard to ignore the underlying tension between them. You hadn’t fully understood the history between Jimin and Minjeong, but it was becoming clearer by the day. They had always been rivals, both fiercely competitive, each with something to prove, even if it wasn’t always about the same thing.

“Yeah,” you finally said, trying to ease the air. “The breakthrough moments are crucial. They’re the point where we stop being defined by others and start defining ourselves.”

Minjeong leaned back, her eyes thoughtful now. “I like that. It’s raw. A bit messy, even. That’s what makes the struggle feel real.”

She glanced at Jimin again, but Jimin was already looking away, focusing on the floor instead of meeting her gaze.

The tension between them was palpable.

You continued, trying to keep the peace. “The final section of the piece represents acceptance—when we find peace with ourselves. It doesn’t mean everything gets easier, but we reach a place where we can move with purpose, even in uncertainty.”

Minjeong’s eyes gleamed. “Acceptance, huh? That’s where you’re supposed to shine, right, Jimin?”

Jimin’s eyes flashed, and her lips pressed into a tight line, but she didn’t respond. You saw the way Minjeong’s words seemed to hang in the air, intentionally placed to provoke something from Jimin.

You stood up, stretching your legs. “Okay, I think we’re all on the same page now, right? We’re looking for a balance between tension and release, and how that mirrors our journey with identity. The movements need to reflect that.”

Minjeong nodded, stepping toward the center of the room. “Got it. Time to practice, then. Let’s see if you can keep up, Jimin.”

Jimin exhaled sharply through her nose, but instead of answering, she turned toward the mirror and began stretching once more, her jaw tight as she prepared to dive back into the routine.

You couldn’t shake the feeling that the air between them had shifted again—more electric now, charged with a quiet animosity that was beginning to seep into your thoughts. You turned to Minjeong, who had her eyes locked on Jimin’s reflection.

“What’s going on between you two?” you finally asked, voice low, catching Minjeong’s gaze.

Minjeong smiled, but there was something cold in her eyes. “Nothing you need to worry about. Just a little friendly rivalry.”

But you didn’t believe her.

Hesperides station whirls to life right around the eighth to tenth system hour, as is customary onboard. Astra, however, has yet to integrate herself into this routine; back in her home system, Helios, the fifth or sixth hour ante meridiem was more familiar- or perhaps, that is just how the Collins family operated.

It was one of many culture shocks she had experienced while aboard- far too accustomed to early opening hours of storefronts, it took around a week or two for Astra to realize that she got no customers before eight- save for Setteth, who was also an anomaly by station standards- so it was pointless to get up at five and prep the diner. a tough lesson learned.

Another thing she hadn't accounted for was just how differently late " Aunt Cassie " ran the diner. She left big shoes to fill, no doubt, Astra was ready to stuff tissue into the toe box in need be- but she hadn't prepared herself for the legacy Cassiopeia Collins had left on the deep space station. 

Not one meal served could end without a passing mention of her name, and every time, Astra felt an estranged feeling of longing. She and Cassie had never been close, barely met, and her family would not spare a single credit towards visits to where she had settled- she was rarely ever discussed in a setting that wasn't Astra being told to shape up, or she'd end up like Cassiopeia, the one who cracked under the pressure.

Because of that, Astra did not feel very connected to her memory of Aunt Cassie, if at all. In truth, it was hard not to see her as another expectation set by others; be like Aunt Cassie, fulfill every role she took up, honor her memory. And Astra is nothing if not the dedication she puts into her responsibilities. 

That brings us to today, Astra's first day off since she opened the Milky Way Diner back up. She and Ka'el's schedules lined up just perfectly for this moment- it was as if the black holes right outside the station had aligned just for them. Though, as Ka'el stood in front of Astra's door on the block, something felt off.

" Sugar- are you just about done getting dolled up ? As much as i- and believe me I do- love seeing you with your hair up all nice, it's been an hour since we were supposed to go out "

There's a teasing lilt to her voice- honeyed words from a practiced tongue. Ka'el leaned on the wall besides Astra's accommodations, arms crossed across her chest and broad shoulders strained against her casual attire. Despite her words, there's no real rush- besides her own, eager to spend every moment she could with her partner. 

" i'm almost ready- just. Just give me a second! " 

Before Ka'el could ( rightfully ) respond that this had been the nth time she'd asked for a second, Astra was hurrying out of the door and straightening out her apron. Ka'el's good-humored expression twisted into one of confusion as she looked Astra up and down, an eyebrow raised as she moved her hand to her hip with a flourish.

" Your diner uniform ? Didn't we agree today was your day off- not to mention, our date ? "

A second passed, before Astra fully registered the words, and awkwardly laughed off the ( mild ) glare from her girlfriend. Suddenly very aware of what she was wearing, she patted down her attire, stuffing her hands in the front pocket of her apron, before pulling out all sorts of paper receipts, sauce packets, and napkins, in a frantic search for something-

" Don't be too alarmed- I did not forget our date ! I just promised the elderly naru two blocks down i'd whip her up a quick something before I clocked out for the day- it'll be quick, promise "

Finally fishing out the diner keyset, she gives them a quick toss before catching them in the palm of her hands and jingling them in an attempt to grab the correct one. 

" You've gotta learn how to say no- folks here are so busy when they're up and about, they rarely notice they're taking advantage of you. "

Ka'el chastises lovingly, as her free hand reaches up and brushes her cheek with her knuckles tenderly, the gesture reciprocated as Astra gingerly leans into her touch. 

" I know- I know. Just this once "

With a small plea, a pout, and a gaze from under her eyelashes is all it takes for a small, playful groan to pass through Ka'el as her fanged grin makes an appearance

" You know for a fact I can never say no to you, sugar... but make it snappy, you hear ? Can't be queuing up at the diner every time I want to take my girlfriend out on a date " 

Ka'el tuts, pressing her lips to her forehead with a slight grin drawn on her lips as they both make their way to the diner, Ka'el's tail wrapped Astra's waist as she took confident, graceful strides, though shortened to match Astra's pace.

The same old song and dance of opening up the diner and starting on the pre-work ensued- with Ka'el resting her elbows on the countertop and her head in her hands, observing Astra's efficient movements. She was a wonder to witness when prepping dishes- even more when she could take her time catering the meal for the individual. 

But there was an undeniable exhaustion in her eyes, poorly concealed eye bags she assured were just the poor lighting casting shadows on her face, even if it was perfectly lit in the kitchen. her usual motions were slower, more calculated, when she usually already had it incorporated, second nature practically. What tipped Ka'el off that something really was wrong was the recipe book Aunt Cassie stored in a cabinet.

" Taking a page out of your auntie's book ? "

Ka'el calls out, tapping Astra's forearm, as she hadn't given a response straight away. Usually, she always had a witty response locked and loaded for her every teasing, playful remark- something Ka'el found endearing.

" Mmm... something like that "

She responded noncommittally, stirring the ladle with some difficulty- the strain of her muscles evident as Astra struggled. At this, Ka'el took initiative, standing behind her as she gripped the ladle and her hand with her own, while turning the heat to low with the other. 

" Sugar- you're exhausted. You haven't had a break in weeks, and I know you're just settling in but- "

Astra cuts Ka'el off, twisting her body around to face her. Ka'el's expression softens at the sight of her saddened features, placing her palms against her hips.

" I'm- I'm fine, Ka'el. It has just been- a bit tough settling into the new lifestyle, is all "

Ka'el frowns, her thumbs drawing comforting patterns on her clothed hips as she urges her to continue. If only she wasn't so easy to talk to, Astra laments internally. She sighs, resting her head on Ka'el chest, almost as if hiding her shameful expression.

" I- I cannot be what my aunt was to this place, this diner- I cannot be her to them, and I never will be. I mourn her death like a stranger- I cannot help but lament what could've been, if she had survived that stroke- perhaps the community would not have taken such a big loss, and I wouldn't have been a crude replacement so soon after her passing " 

The words from her lips fall as freely as the tears that had been bottled up, Ka'el maneuvering Astra's arms to wrap around her firm figure, as she rests a hand on her head, lightly scratching at her scalp.

" These people- this community needed someone like my aunt, not like me. I am an ill-fitting replacement- one who cannot meet their expectations "

Her sobs and hiccups are met with Ka'el's comforting hum as she allows the poor girl to vent out her feelings. Once she'd cried out all her sorrows, the ka'ettri pulled away, resting her clawed hands on her cheeks tenderly, a stern but loving look swimming in her honey eyes.

" Astra- you do not have to replace your aunt, or meet anyone's expectations- you do not have to be anyone you are not, the folks here are enamored by you, and your habits, and your way of showing care not only for the community, but for this diner- you run a tight ship at that, sugar "

The last comment is made with playful undertones, a giggle drawn out of Astra as Ka'el leans in and places a chaste kiss on the corner of her mouth.

" We all mourn the loss of Aunt Cassie, but it's undeniable that you were the right person to take over- we do not expect you to continue in Cassie's footsteps- what you make of this diner is your choice and yours alone. You are not a replacement- you are your own person, free of the weight of expectations other than your own. Let yourself live a little, indulge yourself "

As she speaks, Ka'el presses her forehead to Astra's, holding her tender gaze.

" You got that, sugar ? "

A small nod comes from a flushed Astra, as Ka'el smiles triumphantly, leaning in and stealing a kiss from her cushioned lips.

" Atta girl- now, let's get this soup to that elderly woman, so I can take my sweet girl on a date, hm ? "

She teases, beginning to stir the ladle and scooping some of the delicious, if lukewarm soup into a takeout container. The smile on Astra's face is contagious, as she wipes her tears in a swift motion.

" Of course. "

* a small contraption that sort of looks like a swiss army knife, with a hand thermometer and a precision scale tied into one ( roswell's invention, made special just for astra )

Singapore Cheap Shipping Ratings

Going to be starting a series of reviews for merch manufacturing 'n stuff from Singapore. Tag is #merch hell.

Introducing: Singapore Couriers

Shipping is expensive, especially overseas to the other side of the world. If you're in Southeast Asia, trying to get a half decent shipping rate for your international buyers is...painful. So, without further ado, here are my reviews:

Singpost

Go-to government mailing service.

Recommended:

- Local: Yes

- International: No

Pros:

- You can use stamps on these, and if you have a grandparent who left behind their huge collection or some free handouts, you can subsidize shipping to be pretty cheap.

- Post offices are everywhere, so it's usually a 5 minute walk to drop off your stuff.

Cons:

- You still have to drop your parcels off since there's no door to door pick up

- International tracking disappears off the face of the earth the moment it hits the destination country, which is not ideal. I sent two acrylic charms to the US, and one to Canada....

One caused my friend to go through the effort of calling his post office and dealing with a lot of customer service hell. Another one went missing. That is a pretty bad failure rate. This awful tracking is also well-documented.

Conclusion: If you love your customers, please don't use Singpost as a tracked service. Put disclaimers if you really want discounted tracking.

Justship

Newer shipping startup with competitive prices.

Recommended:

Local: Haven't tried, but there are more well known services (like Ninjavan).

International: Yes! Absolutely! But for smaller parcels, only US/UK is supported at the moment.

Pros:

- Really damn good customer service. Quick responses, friendly, and most importantly, *transparent*.

- Lets you set up a spreadsheet for bulk shipping, and provides integrations with storefronts like Shopify (sadly not BigCartel)

- Tracking in the destination country instead of disappearing

- Door to door pickup

- Parcels don't seem to be tampered with much? At least from what I've seen.

Cons:

- At the moment, there is no tracking while the parcels are being delivered to the destination country. So the opposite of Singpost, but still preferable. (However, they have told me they will be looking into it.)

- For smaller parcels like acrylic charms, cheap shipping only works for the US/UK. For everything else, it automatically defaults to the pricing of a higher volumetric weight, which is way more pricey than Qxpress. (Same as previous bullet point, they have told me they will try to support other countries in the future.)

- Door to door pickup is only for 5 or more deliveries. Otherwise, they expect you to drop it off at their warehouse, which for me is pretty far away.

Conclusion: Easily the best service here. Unfortunately they're a bit limited since they're a smaller company, and bulk orders are better, but the consistent quality is good, especially if you want to provide a good service to your customers (who are already paying 11USD minimum).

Qxpress

Cheap mailing service with a lot of existing big boi infrastructure in place.

Recommended:

- Local: There's better, there's worse. Eh.

- International: Yes for smaller batches (<5) or non US/UK countries

Pros:

- Ships damn near everywhere

- Door to door pickup regardless of order size, parcels, etc. They have dropoff stations too.

Cons:

- Tampers with your packages.

Smaller envelopes are safe, but they also paste a shitton of shipping labels over your stuff, some which may have truncated addresses.

Others have reported that they might open and repack larger parcels. Not exactly the best thing for privacy, or stuff in the parcels remaining intact.

- Door to door pickup takes their sweet time. Again, there are also reports of them missing the pickup.

- Doesn't appear to have a convenient option for bulk shipping, but I may not have noticed it?

Conclusion: Comparable prices to the other two, more flexible, but comes with standard shittiness of a large company cutting costs. Only use this for smaller shipments if Justship won't cut it. Your packages won't get lost, but they sure will get fucked with.

Tl;dr Justship is the GOAT.

May 25 - Osaka Day Trip

Freewriting

Today I woke up at 8 (feeling a little better than I did yesterday) and got ready for our regularly scheduled class meeting at 9. I arrived on time (やった) and ate my breakfast bento during the morning discussion before I left with the class for Osaka by train. The journey there took a little over an hour (way less time than when I navigated my friends and I there) and after arriving our first stop was Umeda Sky Building. This was our third "observatory" of the trip, but I didn't mind as the Birdseye view of Osaka was fairly different from that of Kyoto and Tokyo. One of the highlights of the view was a building that had a highway passing through its first four floors!

After the Umeda Sky Building, we took a break for lunch where I grabbed some cheap ramen with a few of the guys (I am trying to spend a little less yen this last week as I have burned through a substantial amount of my funds already.) Regardless of price, the ramen was pretty good!

After lunch we walked to Osaka castle, which was deceptively large. Leaving the station its size seemed comparable to the other two castles that we have visited in Japan thus far but once arriving, the building towered over me. It was probably my favorite of the three castles that we have seen so far (unfortunately, the interior has been turned into a museum of sorts so we did not go in.) However, it was still super cool from the outside.

The final location that we went to as a class today was Dotonbori, the main shopping district of Osaka. Everything here was extremely over the top, with massive advertisements of sculpted dragons, crabs, and many other things outside of restaurants and storefronts.

After breaking off from the class for the day, I walked around Dotonbori quite a bit more and got some cool souvenirs for people back home.

After a slightly confusing series of train rides back, I stopped at McDonalds for dinner (on a budget) before returning to Stay SAKURA to unwind and write today's blog post!

Academic Reflection

Today's reading once again focused on the differences between Japanese cities and their Western contemporaries. More specifically, the layout and zoning of Japanese cities. As discussed in Tokyo, Japanese cities appear more haphazard at a glance and this is due primarily to Japan's less restrictive zoning laws. Due to this leniency in zoning, it is not uncommon to have a variety of businesses, residential buildings, and restaurants all within the same city block or even next door to one another. I personally enjoy this contrast to Western cities and feel that it makes Japan's cities feel far more walkable (of course the excellent and accessible public transportation helps.) I noticed this integration more in Tokyo than Kyoto but it is definitely present in both cities.

Todays reading applied this phenomenon to Osaka (where our today's excursions took us.) Osaka became a heavily industrialized city around the advent of the Shinkansen (specifically, the route from Tokyo to Kobe.) This industrialization drastically effected the quality of life in Osaka, with many considering it to uninhabitable for a time. To remedy the situation in Osaka, the Japanese government implemented land readjustment policies. These policies covered a lot but essentially forced land owners to comply with public building projects, taking away some of the rights previously held by these Japanese land owners. We even saw an example of this in effect on our first excursion today, with the building that has a highway running through it (The Gate Tower Building!)

This 1906 Art Nouveau storefront displays several distinctive features characteristic of the style. Art Nouveau was known for its use of organic lines and structures, which often took inspiration from natural forms. Here are some design elements present in the storefront:

Curvilinear Shapes: The most striking aspect is the large, rounded shop window, which has an elegant, asymmetric curve. It reflects Art Nouveau's affinity for flowing, naturalistic shapes that emulate the forms found in plants and flowers.

Integration with Architecture: The design of the window and door seamlessly blends with the building's facade, creating an impression that the storefront itself is a living, organic entity.

Textural Contrast: The smooth surfaces of the large window pane stand in contrast to the more textured, sculpted stone and ironwork framing it, providing a tactile dimension to the storefront.

The storefront created by Albert Pèpe is a very distinctive example of Art Nouveau's commitment to beauty and harmony in both form and function.

⸸ཀ( the city of Black Chains is suspended in thick, acidic smog, offering quite a sight out of the paneled windows. It takes up the entire walls of a green ballroom that stretches out as far as the eye can see. Candles made of crystal float about the ceiling, hanging upside down to face their emerald fire at the guests below, but never dripping wax upon their exquisite clothes. The polished floor was littered with devils attending an event hosted by the lord of the House, who didn't happen to stick around or even make an executive appearance. Instead, the formalities were choreographed by musicians, waiters, and hidden servants dressed just as magnificently while running around to satisfy their guests. The music pierced through the soft cacophony of voices, capturing the attention of those who wanted to waltz in the designated portion of the ballroom. They swung, wings folded and horns dolled up with jeweled accessories, laughing at the conversations no one else could pick up on. The symphony was scattered all over the place, and the crowd crawled closer to the middle to designate a performative circle. Some patrons stopped to inquire about this curious show that was still a mystery, but the Infernal musicians, imps, and freaks, remained silent as they strummed and plucked their instruments.

Amid them stands Lestat de Lioncourt, a vampire of Cormyr. It has been three hundred years since he visited the House of Mammon in Ba'ator. The balls here never change. They remain the same tenacious endeavor which always ends in someone getting beheaded or sent out into the Mianrous swamp. Bored, he drinks Infernal wine watered down by blood. Its taste is superior to anything he's had before. Yet for Lestat, knowing a powerful Devil and having his name on an invitation is only an incidental indulgence. Freely, he asks an attendant for a portal into Baldur's Gate. The imp, beady-eyed and shivering, looks over Lestat's shoulder as if asking permission of Mammon's lackeys. They stand guard and say nothing. Lestat, clearing his throat and offering the imp a goblet of unfinished wine he knows no lesser demons can afford, reminds him that the vampire has somewhere to be. To add fire to a bigger inferno, he grins to announce: "I am late to a masquerade."

One would logically toss a thousand invitations into the air of Baldur's Gate to catch bodies for a masquerade. The delicate, gold-kissed envelopes make it into every crevice of doors standing ajar, invading storefronts of Lower City, and stroking the stairs of Wyrm's Crossing. No stone is left unturned, but only those who could afford a proper dress made it to the ball. It shrunk the number of guests, but that was how Lestat knew only the worthy dared to march through Cazador's mansion. Cazador, a higher being who speaks of immortality like it were a false deity's gift. Lestat met that ink-haired noble a few times over bloodstained cards. He greatly dislikes him, yet Lioncourt's curiosity is stronger than his distaste for most of his kind. In Cormy, Lestat lives a solitary life like a wizard in his tower. Despite his attempt to integrate with humans by night, an actor's dream ended long ago when his maker, a Master of dark arts and manipulation, decided to kill himself after turning a man of the stage into an atrocity. Cazador shows himself off, embodied by a tall castle and loud parties. This is not the first time Lestat visits, but tonight, he thinks it is best to be the last.
