scarlet and violet have such a distinctly different design direction from past games. i can't say it's bad, per se; but it does feel a little jarring and i'm still getting used to it.

I'm always perplexed when people act like there's no option for filming night scenes other than Helm's Deep or the Battle of Winterfell-- aka artificially blue brightness, or squinting in pitch darkness.
But it's not like there aren't well known examples of really beautiful night scenes with natural or naturalistic lighting
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apocalypto (2006)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Vvitch (2015)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Little Hours (2017)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I don't have to see every detail in the average night time scene-- but I should see what's important, and that's something all these films manage.

Law's artist side isn't talked about enough, so here's a smooth brain ramble.
He prefers abstract arts over realism. Unlike Kid who forms animal or skull figures with metals, Law creates strange 'sculptures' with his victim's bodies/belongings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, of course, the tattoos.
I like how all of his tattoos accentuate the shapes of his torso and arms, especially the joints and muscles. Combined they look like a single stylized drawing of human upper torso.
Seen theories that the tribal style could be a lost trend from Flevance (as seen on the arm of a miner in his flashback), but it could just be his personal style. That said, his upper arm's heart tattoos look similar.
Tumblr media
(Something that artists probably noticed long ago but I'm only noticing recently: Law's upper arm's tattoos have been simplified over time. There used to be two spiral-like protrusions, but Oda has been omitting them in later arts)
The "DEATH" tattoos have a straightforward message. According to the Law novel, these were his first tattoos.
Tumblr media
Speaking of death, ghosts and spirituality have been implicitly a theme for Law, especially during Dressrosa. Doflamingo referred to Law as Cora's 'vengeful ghost'. Law's (cursed) sword Kikoku's name means 'wailings of a restless ghost". Ironically, Law having a hidden name was also a tradition that related to dead people.
The orange jolly roger (red in the sail) could be many things, I think it's a stylized way of drawing the sun.
Tumblr media
Sun symbols are everywhere in the One Piece world. Law's lower arm tattoos are different types of 'suns'. Law might've subconsciously carried those symbols from his hometown for their aesthetic appeal.
Tumblr media
The tattoos on the back of his hands reminded me of the church lady's cross, which is slightly different from the cross seen at Kuma's church. It's possible that various faiths in One Piece world are interconnected, leading to a prophecy about the sun god and Dawn. Law, at the very least, believes in the will of D and his own fate being tied to a purpose.
The chest tattoo, clearly a tribute to Corazon, could have some elements of catholicism. Kikoku also has crosses all over its sheath. Originally this wasn't my observation, but Law seeing Cora as a sacred being makes a lot of sense.
Tumblr media
Carving a heart at the dead center of his chest by creating small wounds - the process itself reminds of Cora doesn't it
The custom-made Dressrosa coat is another tribute to Corazon, but IMHO he designed it specifically for Doflamingo, as a mockery.
Tumblr media
A cross and circle like dangling a pistol target for Doflamingo's shooting practice, with a grinning face copied from Doflamingo's own jolly roger, but it's Corazon. Like his brother has returned to face his pistol again. A vengeful ghost indeed
And boy did it work...
Doflamingo shot it until the mark was completely drenched and unrecognizable.
Tumblr media
Assuming he draws for all of his clothes himself, here's this masterpiece:
Tumblr media
Or maybe it's gifted by his crew mates. Either way, it's adorable.
Since he's a surgeon (and a comic nerd), he should be skilled at drawing human anatomy. How does he draw realistic arts? Does he doodle while taking notes?
We've seen his handwriting in punk hazard arc and it wasn't particularly stylized. Regardless, it'd be nice to take a proper peek at his notebook.

What was Roberto's first tattoo? Does it have any particular meaning or significance to him?
Hmm, that's something interesting to explore!
I believe his first tattoo was that little yellow star on his neck. He has two others on his chest, each representing a significant self-discovery. ⭐✨
Tumblr media
The tattoos were done by his childhood friend, 'Marina Navegantes', a talented and charismatic great white shark.
The stylized waves on the left arm were made as a way to romanticize and overcome an incident related to a storm that destroyed his former home. (This is something I will address in the future, as this 'storm' has affected all of my characters in some way.) 🌊✨
The misty moon on the right arm demonstrates its esoteric and mysterious side. He has a great affinity with lunar symbolism. In general, hammerhead sharks society has lunar symbols throughout their culture, something I created inspired by an interesting phenomenon. 🌙✨
Tumblr media
On his back, he has three shooting stars, made because three wishes he made to these stars came true.
That's it! I hope you enjoy!🦈✨

One thing I appreciate about parahumans on an aesthetic level is that while there's an insistence on determining what would "really happen" if people had superpowers, and that oftentimes involves determining the exact mechanics and boundaries of someone's powers, is doesn't extend into the powers themselves making "realistic" sense. They're not "I have a powerful but explainable physical attribute" or "I control this one element/physical force/metaphysical force" that you sometimes see in modern "grounded" superhero deconstructions. Powers are wild and specific in a way that's better at capturing the feel of a comic superhero setting, without sacrificing the deconstructive angle.
Like, I'm on arc 12 of Ward right now, and "Red" keeps summoning random industrial equipment out of the ground. Saws, cranes, pistons, what-have-you. It doesn't seem like its a green lantern-style "I can create what I want but like to stylize my constructs" thing, it seems like its more "I can specifically summon industrial equipment." And there's lot of settings where something like that wouldn't make sense or fit in, particularly ones where powers are supposed to be mapped onto universal forces or natural kinds. Is "industrial equipment" a natural kind in the parahumans-verse? No. So why does she specifically control industrial equipment if that's an arbitrarily-defined category? Eh, it feels coherent as a powerset, and that's all the entities really care about.
There's a lot of powers with this quality. Pretty much all tinker abilities run into it: why can Bakuda have the ability to nuclear bombs, black hole bombs, and cold bombs, when all they have in common is triggering an effect in an area surrounding them? Why can Kenzie not make microphones, but can make "sound cameras?" Case 53s fit into this too: whats the relation between "secreting hallucinogens from your skin" and "having a tail?" Or "shooting out a bunch of random chemicals from your hands" and "being really durable?"
To be clear, this isn't a criticism. Works that insist on thinking up what superpowers it makes "sense" to have are cutting of a lot of the potential earned by getting weird with it. And works that focuses on giving characters only "fundamental" or "grounded" powersets oftentimes feel like they're in another, more boring genre entirely.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
so sorry for the novel length post, i hate doing it as much as you all hate seeing it, but a girl’s gotta pay the bills! tumblr is where i first found my footing as someone who was taking commissions and i’m allergic to social media these days but tumblr still feels as comfy as it did back then and i appreciate everyone who has been kind and supportive to me here over the years!! even reblogs help, thanks y’all!!
