the AUDACITY of thinking starting a streaming service is the move here. like, I get that maybe YouTube isn't the place for watcher anymore, but then put your content on another place that already exists, don't create yet another subscription based streaming service. we don't need more of them.
gonna just say it: pirating is completely morally sound in this day and age. the ONLY reason I was willing to stop doing it at any point was because Netflix came along and put all the content I wanted to watch in ONE (1) place, which was convenient for me so I was willing to pay for it. before that if a show was on TV and I missed it because, you know, I had a life, I'd download or have my grandfather record it for me on his VCR (yeah, ig im getting old).
Hundreds of different streaming services are not convenient, and I'm not paying for a whole other subscription (I already have 2 and honestly that's too many) just so I can watch content made by TWO GUYS (sorry Steven. you seem nice but I'm just not that into you).
Also, removing content from YouTube that has been free and available on there the whole time until now is straight up just a scummy move.
I don't even wish the Watcher guys the best with this. They could have done literally anything else without being capitalist scumbags. I hope this whole idea goes up in flames, because this is the most bullshit idea ever and if we as consumers keep going along with all these subscription-based models, this is going to be a continuing trend (like it already is but people don't seem to realize that it'll stop happening once it stops being profitable. they just complain and still pay for it). and fuck that.

The reason why social media has gotten so much worse recently (reddits recent fuck-up, everything on Twitter since Musk, FB being FB, Tumblrs various attempts at expanding profitability recently) is because it is no longer possible to exist as a company by fencing in large parts of our social life and having investment money pump in on the basis of expected future value of that amount of information when it suddenly costs money to loan money due to suddenly high interest rates after the inflationary crisis of the last year, which has made the current model of the Internet that has existed for the last about 10 years completely unsustainable. All of them need to become profitable or die, and they are learning very quickly that that just isn't possible no matter how much of the life and information of the users one steals. We are witnessing the death-throes of Web2.0, and what comes after is as yet unclear.

I know this has been said before but man I wish people stopped acting like it's a profound shock when they are not personally notified about Critical Role's schedule. There is a website. There is a newsletter. There is a Twitter. Matthew Mercer is not going to show up on your doorstep and gently type in the URL, his hands over yours like Patrick Swayze in Ghost. The power rests within you.

In 2024 we're pirating shows and movies from big streamers and studios and paying for subscriptions to small creators so they can keep creating, it really shouldn't be that hard to understand.

btw for anyone who's leery of CSP after hearing abt their whole subscription shitshow a few years ago-
the subscription is for early access to new features as they develop them. all these new features will be in the next full release version (4.0), which upon release you will be able to pay a reduced price to upgrade to if you own the current full release (3.0)
so, if you buy a perpetual license now, you get 3.0. you don't get free updates to 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc, but these updates will eventually (probably in a year or so, based on past development time) be packaged into version 4.0, and you can then pay a reduced price to upgrade to the 4.0 version (the current sale price to upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 is $16, $22.99 when not on sale), and so on. but, if you don't want to pay to upgrade, then you can still use 3.0 forever, even after the 4.0 release, and any release after that. you won't lose access to it.
