WOII: In Summary

Throughout the semester, attending the WOII class introduced me to design concepts I had never encountered before. Previously, I thought of design as something clean and harmonious. However, through WOII, I learned about designs where seemingly mismatched elements come together to create harmony. Activities aimed at broadening our perspectives before starting the design process allowed me to explore ideas that went beyond conventional boundaries.

The class on postmodernism in Week 11 was particularly enlightening. It taught me that even complex design can effectively convey information. Moreover, I discovered that colors that initially seem discordant can come together to create a unique harmony.

In WOII, group work played a central role. Since the groups changed every week, I had the opportunity to learn a lot from my classmates. Sometimes I got inspiration from their ideas, and other times, a single comment from a friend helped me upgrade my own ideas.

However, I realized that I tend to have a limited range of ideas. Once I come up with one, it’s hard for me to think of another. However, I saw my classmates presenting multiple ideas. Watching them made me determined to broaden the scope of my thinking.

Amilyen csalódott voltam az új Myrath meghallgatása után, olyan lelkes vagyok a Subsignal új albumától. Eleve imádom őket, mint ahogy imádtam jogelődjüket, a Sieges Event is. Az eredetileg oldalági projektként indult Subsignal ma már kamaszkorba lépett, 6 lemezes stabil társulat, akik 2018-ban egy olyan tökéletes albummal leptek meg minket (La Muerta), hogy attól konkrétan padlót fogtam. Miközben a toplistám kihirdetésekor lelkesen a nyakukba akasztottam az ezüstérmet, ki is fakadtam: „Hogy lehet valami egyszerre ennyire intelligens és slágeres, underground és fülbemászó?”

A „La Muerta” tényleg szokatlanul slágeres volt, Markus Steffen gitáros maga is „kvázi-AOR”-ként jellemezte. Időközben azonban volt egy pandémia, egy basszer-váltás, és a hangulat megváltozott a zenekarban – mint ahogy a világban is. Erről Steffen így beszélt: „Az új albumon megpróbáltunk ellenpontot teremteni a La Muerta-hoz, ami talán inkább az AOR felé hajlott. De alapvetően ragaszkodtunk ahhoz, amit szeretünk: dallamok, jó refrének és érdekes, de ugyanakkor átlátszó dalszerkezetek. Minden új album ‘ellenreflex’ az adott elődhöz képest. A szövegeket tekintve minden dal megáll a saját lábán, más a témája. Még ha nem is föltétlenül terveztük így, a dalszövegek egy része minden bizonnyal annak a sok szomorú dolognak a benyomása alatt született, amivel 2020 eleje óta, vagy talán még hosszabb ideje, minden nap szembesülünk.”

Az „A Poetry Of Rain” tehát szövegszerűen és zeneileg is súlyosabb kiváló elődjénél. A súlyosabb alatt nem azt értem, hogy metálosabb lett a hangzás (bár azért akad néhány harapós riff is), hanem hogy komorabb, melankolikusabb hangulatot árasztanak a dalok (van is egy „Melancolia One” című szám a lemezen). Szerencsére – ahogy Steffen nyilatkozta – maradtak a jó dallamok, a fogós refrének és a szépen harmonizált kórusok. A kiadó producerei, Yogi Lang és Kalle Wallner mindezt megfejelték egy példaértékűen tiszta, ropogós, kellően definiált hangzással.

Az akusztikus bónusz nótával együtt kb. 52 perc hosszú lemez 10 új dalt sorakoztat föl. Bár a Subsignalnak semmi mással össze nem téveszthető, sajátos stílusa van, azért itt is fölbukkannak a szokásos áthallások: akad Pink Floyd inspiráció (Ember Part II) és Yes-féle stílusgyakorlat (The Last Of Its Kind). Nekem momentán a húzós „The Art of Giving In”, a Yesre emlékeztető instrumentális betéttel fölturbózott „A Wound Is A Place…” és a döbbenetesen hangulatos „The Last Of Its Kind” a kedvencem. Csak magamat tudom ismételni: „Hogy lehet valami egyszerre ennyire intelligens és slágeres, underground és fülbemászó?” Nem tudom elképzelni, hogy az éves összesítéskor ne az élbolyban végezze!

Darcy rights herself, carefully, so that she doesn't just fall over in her seat. Maybe that would help her case about just being a guy. a guy-girl, but she doesn't know that he would take her the requisite amount of serious afterwards.

She's not, like, Captain Marvel or something -- hell, she's not even close to the level of Maria Hill, but she's not nothing. Nobody is nothing, but Darcy is also, like, a little something-something. She has helped save the world a handful of times, and then saved a dozen little towns on top of that; her name is subsigned on several peer-reviewed and peer-raved studies and papers on the Asgardians, on Einstein-Rosen Bridge Theory and how it corresponds to the new reality humanity did not know it lived in until 2010.

"I'm not being mysterious, sheesh. I'm just telling you as directly as I can, cause I don't really understand it myself. Asgardian shit's weird, okay? Have you read the mythology because that's the edited version. It's unhinged what Thor and Loki and the others did when they were younger -- puts frat bros on spring break in Cabo to shame."

"It is though. What you sound like."

Not satisfied by the press of the Oreo squishy, Darcy takes to twirling her keys on her finger instead. The jingle of keys is almost rhythmic, jingle clack jingle clack .

"I would like another coffee, actually, yeah. And then, like, if we could get on our way? Thor's pretty insistent I get Andro.... Laundromat..."

Frowning, she pulls her phone out with her hand not occupied by the keychain, and squints at the text messages -- presumably from Thor.

"Andvaranaut. It's a ring. Loki stole it yada yada what else is new.... oh, and it's cursed."

"---That good vibe we had going? Flew right out the window the second you decided to be all cryptic and vague about whether whatever happens next is going to be fun or not."

Part of Strange feels a bit like he's arguing with America, almost; Despite Darcy being much older than that teenage girl who caused a part of his life to become a real mess for some moments there, she's got a similar aura going in a few ways. It makes him sigh, leaning back in his chair, the last remains of Pastrami-abomination disappearing between his teeth.

He does relax a bit, though; One can spot it in the way his shoulders sag, something akin to defeat almost appearing on his features next to a good portion of slight annoyance and... impatience. Perhaps the barest hint of amusement - but by god he's just tired.

Darcy may look like the most innocent child which wouldn't be able to rip a sheet of paper in half if tasked to do that, but that doesn't mean she cannot, in theory, harbor any other kinds of powers he has no knowledge of. Fought a pea-sized demon once, kicked Stephen's ass through twenty dimensions despite that thing having barely been bigger than a fingernail, so yeah. He's had his fair share of strange stuff happening (perhaps his name does have a meaning, at last...)

"---I just don't really appreciate if someone's going down that oh-so-mysterious-route, shit like that. I'm dealing with similar things almost every day and it gives me the heebie-jeebies ever since I've been tasked to keep the Universe safe, such things."

Superhero-struggles, perhaps. Strange looks back at her, takes another, deeper breath, then brings a hand back up to his features and rubs his digits along his eyebrows.

Then, he lowers it again, leans forward, elbows on the table.

"By the way, I absolutely do not sound like that."

The way she had mimicked him; No, definitely not his tone of voice. Not even close. Never. That's not what he comes across as.

...Right?

"So, since you're so super not-important apparently, as you make it seem, why are you the one needing to retrieve something from me that was pesumably left behind by Odin's offspring, then? ---It either is not as dangerous as I think it might be, or it's expected that I don't give a fuck about giving it to you... or you're more than what you let on to be. Which one of those is correct?"
