何と撮影所のスタッフと役者全てが組織のメンバーだったのだ。ミッチーを逃がしたものの多勢に無勢、菊は追い込まれてしまう。

RIP to Sonny Chiba, the original Street Fighter. People have a difference of opinion on who the greatest action star of all time is, but your list would be lacking if Sonny Chiba isn’t in the top five. Chiba is compared to Bruce Lee often, but Chiba always had a more hard, ice-cold sort of intensity that reminds me of the volcanic glares of Timothy Dalton. He did well as merciless, cold, hard, and amoral men, underworld enforcers and Yakuza legbreakers, who discover in themselves some last ember of redemption and decency, usually achieved in a bloody finale where he finally directs his brutality and jaw dropping martial skill against people who have it coming in defense of some new noble crusade. I don’t think Chiba would be successful today on screen, because he didn’t quip and never winked at the audience. He was all sober silence, glares, and intensity. His best supporting roles (given in his friends’ movies, generously) were as stern, disciplinarian fathers of all kinds, trainers, who give students martial skills but no love.

In terms of choreography, there was always a brutal intensity. He loved to do something where he grabbed a limb and bent it in a direction it was not meant to go. There was none of the lightweight swordplay of swashbuckers. Even though nine year olds take it at the mall, Chiba reminded you of something it is sometimes easy to forget: that Karate could be used to kill.

That said, Chiba’s biggest achievements were behind the scenes. Chiba did his own choreography and yes, he went from director to cinematographer, but his most important work was developing the Japan Action Club, a group of stuntpeople, choreographers, drivers, and so on who essentially worked on nearly all martial arts and action movies in their era. Nearly all action stars in Japan post 70s were either directly trained by Chiba, or trained by people trained by Chiba. His two greatest alumni went on to become great action stars in their own right in productions Chiba was intimately involved in: Sue Shiomi (who is Japan’s Angela Mao and Kara Hui rolled in one) and the boyishly handsome Hiroyuki Sanada.

If you want recommendations, start with the Street Fighter (1973) and Return of the Street Fighter, which is kind of his mission statement, a more underworld connected Bruce Lee with a cold, amoral side but still seeking redemption. There’s also “Karate Bullfighter,” which deals explicitly with the morality of the martial arts and the Karate culture of Japan. I found “The Power of Aikido” (1975) to be the best movie he made with his young proteges, more as a kind of patriarch.

The title says it all. One of the most talented women in martial arts cinema was Etsuko “Sue” Shiomi. Trained by the legend Sonny Chiba she was a force to be reckoned with. Graceful and deadly Sue has had some of the best fight scenes in martial arts movie history. She could perform with swords, nunchuka,  or empty hands. Here’s to Sue Shiomi a true woman of action.
