why do you come here
and why
do you fall asleep
in my lap
in my brain again
it was just a waste
a waste of a day
why do you come here
lie sleep and
dream or no dream
it was a good play
oh why

An east London youth drama group improvises scenes based upon their everyday life. They hung around a theatre run director Joan Littlewood, located in the East End of London. The gang regularly harassed actors and theatregoers. Eventually, the exasperated director invited the youngsters inside the theatre and ultimately convinced them to attend a theatrical course. Barney Platts-Mills decided to document that experience by directing the colour film Everybody’s an Actor, Shakespeare Said (1968), which lasts 31 minutes.
