Helen Keller (colorized)

Miss Helen Keller - Portrait US Library of Congress
Helen Keller was an author, lecturer, suffragists and crusader for the handicapped. Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, She lost her sight and hearing at the age of nineteen months to an illness now believed to have been scarlet fever. Five years later, on the advice of Alexander Graham Bell, her parents applied to the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston for a teacher, and from that school hired Anne Mansfield Sullivan.

Through Sullivan’s extraordinary instruction, the little girl learned to understand and communicate with the world around her. She went on to acquire an excellent education and to become an important influence on the treatment of the blind and deaf.

Her unprecedented accomplishments in overcoming her disabilities made her a celebrity at an early age; at twelve she published an autobiographical sketch in the Youth’s Companion, and during her junior year at Radcliffe, she produced her first book, The Story of My Life, still in print in over fifty languages.

Her friendship with Mark Twain
Tumblr media
"Helen Keller, Miss Sullivan, Mark Twain and Laurence Hutton."
“From that day until his death we were friends,” Keller recalled later. She was already a fan of his work and thrilled to his deep voice and his many hand gestures, which she followed with her own fingertips. She wrote of him:
"He entered into my limited world with enthusiasm just as he might have explored Mars. Blindness was an adventure that kindled his curiosity. He treated me not as a freak, but as a handicapped woman seeking a way to circumvent extraordinary difficulties. There was something of divine apprehension in this rare naturalness towards those who differ from others in external circumstances."
Tumblr media
Helen Keller with Mark Twain - Twain came to Keller’s defense, after reading in her book about a plagiarism scandal that occurred in 1892 when, at only twelve years old, she was accused of lifting her short story “The Frost King” from Margaret Canby’s “Frost Fairies.” Though a tribunal acquitted Keller of the charges, the incident still pissed off Twain. The letter is attached to the photo above
Letters between Mark Twain and Helen Keller.
Though Helen hailed from a respectable Southern family, 19th-century America was flummoxed by the prospect of teaching a deaf-blind girl to talk, read, and learn. Helen’s tutor and governess, Annie Sullivan, fought for her admission to various schools that offered special education. But the cost of educating someone like Helen was high. Clemens wrote to a rich friend on her behalf:
"It won’t do for America to allow this marvelous child to retire from her studies because of poverty. If she can go on with them she will make a fame that will endure in history for centuries. Along her special illness she is the most extraordinary product of all the ages…lay siege to your husband & get him to interest himself and Messrs. John D. & William Rockefeller & the other Standard Oil chiefs in Helen’s case; get them to subscribe an annual aggregate of six or seven hundred or a thousand dollars- & agree to continue this for three or four years, until she has completed her college course…."
Thanks to his intervention, the support of his friend Henry Rogers and Standard Oil, Helen was able to complete her education and graduate cum laude from Harvard’s Radcliffe College. Clemens and Keller remained friends for the rest of his life. They shared an interest in radical politics and a love for life despite their different temperaments. Helen, an avowed optimist, often made fun of Clemens for his avowed pessimism, telling him she didn’t believe a word of his sardonic jokes. As for Clemens, Chambliss writes that he felt she was one of the most important historical figures of all time, “the most wondrous person of her sex that has existed on this earth since Joan of Arc.”

We also have Twain—not playwright William Gibson—to thank for the “miracle worker” title given to Keller’s teacher, Anne Sullivan. As a tribute to Sullivan for her tireless work with Keller, he presented her with a postcard that read, “To Mrs. John Sullivan Macy with warm regard & with limitless admiration of the wonders she has performed as a ‘miracle-worker.’” In his 1903 letter to Keller, he called Sullivan “your other half… for it took the pair of you to make complete and perfect whole.”
Tumblr media
Twain was especially impressed by Keller’s autobiography, writing to her, “I am charmed with your book—enchanted.” (See his endorsement in a 1903 advertisement, above.)
Keller & Clemens also shared a love of dogs

Widely honored throughout the world and invited to the White House by every U.S. president from Grover Cleveland to Lyndon B. Johnson, Keller altered the world’s perception of the capacities of the handicapped. More than any act in her long life, her courage, intelligence, and dedication combined to make her a symbol of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell bluntly warned Republican senators in a private meeting not to sign on to a bill from Sen. Josh Hawley aimed at limiting corporate money bankrolling high-powered outside groups, telling them that many of them won their seats thanks to the powerful super PAC the Kentucky Republican has long controlled.
According to multiple sources familiar with the Tuesday lunch meeting, McConnell warned GOP senators that they could face “incoming” from the “center-right” if they signed onto Hawley’s bill. He also read off a list of Senators who won their races amid heavy financial support from the Senate Leadership Fund, an outside group tied to the GOP leader that spends big on TV ads in battleground Senate races. On that list of senators: Hawley himself, according to sources familiar with the matter.
McConnell has long been a chief opponent of tighter campaign finance restrictions. But there’s also no love lost between McConnell and Hawley, who has long criticized the GOP leader and has repeatedly called for new leadership atop their conference. Just on Tuesday, Hawley told CNN that it was “mistake” for McConnell to be “standing with” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, in their push to tie Ukraine aid to an Israel funding package.
Hawley’s new bill, called the Ending Corporate Influence on Elections Act, is aimed at reversing the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision that loosened campaign finance laws – an effort that aligns the conservative Missouri Republican with many Democrats. Hawley’s bill would ban publicly traded corporations from making independent expenditures and political advertisements – and ban those publicly traded companies from giving money to super PACs.
In an interview, Hawley defended his bill and said that corporate influence should be limited in elections.
“I think that’s wrong,” Hawley told CNN. “I think it’s wrong as an original matter. I think it’s warping our politics, and I see no reason for conservatives to defend it. It’s wrong as a matter of the original meaning of the Constitution. It is bad for our elections. It’s bad for our voters. And I just think on principle, we ought to be concerned.”
According to a list of Senators obtained by CNN, McConnell singled out a number of lawmakers who benefited from his outside group over the last three cycles: Mike Braun of Indiana, Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Susan Collins of Maine, Steve Daines of Montana, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Katie Britt of Alabama, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Eric Schmitt of Missouri, Ted Budd of North Carolina, JD Vance of Ohio and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.
In 2018, Hawley benefited from more than $20 million from McConnell’s group.
McConnell’s office declined to comment.

The Princess and the Frog (2009) v The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) v Aladdin (1992)
Tumblr media
The Princess and the Frog: Randy Newman, who created the soundtrack, is from New Orleans and used his familiarity with the cultural sounds to really bring this one to life. How many composers at the time would have chosen to be influenced with Zydeco (we wouldn't have, but we are also very far from Louisiana altogether)?
The Nightmare Before Christmas: When Danny Elfman was looking for inspiration for this track list, he looked to the past. He turned to music half to a full century old including, Rogers and Hammerstein as well as Gilbert and Sullivan to name a few.
Aladdin: Alan Menken put a lot of detail into the musical themes for the different characters to make sure their songs gave a fair reflection of their true essence. For instance, the Sultan's has a lot of fanfare but is still on the comic side, and Jasmine's is sweet and sad because she lives a comfortable life yet feels so trapped by it.

#OTD in 1871 – Alexander Sullivan, barrister and last King’s Serjeant of Ireland, is born in Dublin; best known as the leading counsel for the defence in the 1916 treason trial of Roger Casement.
Sullivan failed to win the case and Casement was sentenced to death. After Roger Casement’s capture on Banna Strand he was brought to London. During his interrogation on Easter Monday, news of the Rising filtered through, and by the end of the week, English public opinion of Casement had plummeted. He was presumed to have been the instigator of the Rising, although in reality he had come to…

Silly little idea but a who framed roger rabbit au with Sarah four and Harry
Sarah is Eddie
Four is roger
And Harry is Sarah’s assistant (u know those happy go lucky detectives assistants in the crime genre)
The trickster is Judge Doom because yes it works
Romana is Jessica but like her and four are besties instead of married
And yeah Sarah is one of those stoic private detectives who hates toons but slowly grows to love them again after one of them being the cause of her grief
Four continues to try get her to laugh throughout the investigation and it does not work until after doom is defeated and she finally lets herself be happy
They end up staying together along with Harry and they specialise in helping both toons and humans alike and their problems
Yeah to sum it up four gets framed for murder and Sarah is the one who gets him out of the mess facing her greatest battle in the process
Lmk if you would like to see more of this!

I don’t know how intentional it was, but John Sullivan managed to slip a few references to the actors themselves into OFAH, and it’s so sweet. Like, in one episode Del mentions working at the Tower of London. In real life, David Jason had gone there to study the ravens, in preparation for playing a raven in a play. Boycie mentions how proud he is of his garden, in real life, John Challis loved gardening and even owned a gardening centre at one stage. Roger Lloyd Pack was a huge music fan and enjoyed playing the piano and singing with his friends and family. Trigger is never shown to be musical, himself, but he likes to listen to Uncle Albert play.

Contradictory In the Extreme
August 23, 1906
While the Illinois Democracy donkey speaks praise of Bryan, its hind legs kick him into the air. The donkey says "We heartily Indorse W.J. Bryan, the peerless leader for President." A halter around the donkey neck is labelled "N.B. This is the place for a leader." A sign on the ground reads "Request for Sullivan's resignation - Wm J. Bryan"
The caption reads "Bryan - ‘Now which end of the critter is a man to believe?’"
Bryan had stated before the convention that he would only accept a nomination if the party chairman, Roger Sullivan, would resign. The convention endorsed Bryan for the nomination, but refused to call for Sullivan's resignation.

How many of you remember these two American Girl books?
The first of these, Oops!: The Manners Guide for Girls, was one of my favorites as a kid. This was the page about introductions.
Tumblr media
Notice the whimsical names. Squidge Mealy. Daisy Dogdish. Mr. Butterball.
But that’s not why I’ve gathered you all here today.
The book was reprinted several years later under the title A Smart Girl’s Guide to Manners.
This was the introductions page. It might look benign. But take a closer look.

Music in the Air
Above: The Cat and the Fiddle (Pete Gordon) and Mickey Mouse (a monkey in a very creepy costume) were featured in 1934's Babes In Toyland. We close out the old year and ring in the new with a bit of song and dance from three musicals that entertained New Yorkers in the waning days of 1934. Dec. 22, 1934 cover by Arnold Hall. The work of composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II were…
