In this course we are going to get closer to nature. We will be explorers entering a world of new species, trees, fauna. We will take notes of our discoveries: from the smallest creatures to the density of the forests, from the texture of the trunks to the green hills, collecting everything that catches our attention. We will also work on materiality and the origin of color with Kremer Pigmente who will guide us in the preparation of our own colors, which we will use to create unique and personal artwork. Almost 3 months in Penang has given me lots of experiences.Taking language courses at KDU University College is one of the most memorable experiences that couldn’t be forgotten.

There are 3 languages provided at KDU, English, Malaysian and Chinese, which will be taught by native speakers. You would get a chance to meet many new friends from other countries and also get closer to the local student in Penang. Besides learning in class, you will have some outdoor activities which gave real environment to learn languages. There are other undergraduate programs as well, such as Business, Engineering and Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Art.

Food and culture

Penang is an island in Malaysia, located in the south of Thailand. It is a multi-cultural society, including Malaysian, Indian and Chinese. People here speak at least 3 languages. There are various types of food that you can choose, the ingredient and tastes are quite similar to Thai food, so food wouldn’t be a problem living here. These are 3 traditional dishes for each culture in Penang, Malaysia.

Nasi Lemak (Malaysian) - Rice with hard-boiled egg, peanuts, vegetables, lamb/chicken/or beef curry, seafood and sauce.

Char Kway Teow (Chinese) - Rice noodles with cockles, Chinese sausage, and sweet sauce.

Roti (Indian) - Round flatbread served with curry.

The cost of living in Penang is low, probably lower than cost of living in Bangkok. You wouldn’t spend more than 1,000 RM ( about 8,000 THB) per month for food and transportation. However, it also depends on your lifestyle.

A meal costs  4.00 - 8.00 RM

Apartment cost  400 - 700 RM (per month)

Summertime baby

Now, that it is officially summer! I’m definitely not going to be lazy the entire summer, but I do have a little bit of schooling to do. I have decided to take a course over the school year to lighten my workload for the next year. Here’s how to stay productive with a job, volunteering, and just any things you want to learn or work on over the summer. 

1.) What are you doing? Firstly, you must know what you’re going to be doing, for me I am doing online physics, I have a job, I will be volunteering, and I have to learn Java over this summer as well as finish all my AP summer assignments yet I still have to study for my SAT Math Level 2 exam. So my summer is jam-packed, I know what I am doing so this makes my life easier as well. 

2.) Rearrange your schedule! So normally I don’t wake up till 8/8:30 which has been kinda nice but if I want to start working out, I need to get up earlier. So now I am trying to start sleeping around 10/10:30 and then waking up around 7/7:30. This is actually pretty hard for me and requires that I make myself a set schedule for when I do what on which days and how much time I allow myself for such topics. 

3.) Where? When? I had no motivation the first week to do any physics, so every Sunday or so, I find myself at the library where I am able to work quietly in the study rooms for many hours and I do not have any distractions or noise or yelling when I am doing work. Or sometimes I like to go to a coffee shop or my local Barnes and Noble where I am able to just have everyone be quiet and I am able to get different books to help me there.

4.) Why? Without a why or a reason for doing what you’re doing, it’s very hard to stay motivated. Mine is to get out of high school right now, I have had a good experience but I’ve had senioritis ( a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance) since sophomore year. So I am doing everything that I can to make sure that I will be able to graduate to the best of my ability. 

5.) Make it fun! I started to do detailed bullet journaling which is very stress relieving and honestly just makes me excited to go through and fill it out. I have had a very stressful and exhausting junior year, so this summer I am definitely trying to de-stress myself and just be able to enjoy the sun while it’s with us. Giving yourself incentives, finish half of your to-do list and you can watch a movie! 

Remember although your education is important, you should be living your life out because this summer will go by very fast and for me, half is already over and I am just waiting for me to have my summer back!
