Shinpei -

"Has a tendency to ignore his emotions in high stress situations in favor of looking at everything logically, even when it is detrimental for him to take that approach. Keeps meticulous track of everything that happens around him."

Sunny -

"Sunny has been told that his face is not expressive. He doesn't talk a lot and he often gets lost into his imagination. He is a great listener and recalls a lot of information being told he has a great memory (he is able to remember a whole speech about flower symbolism that his friend told him) He is compared to a cat."

Yuki -

"He has difficulty communicating with other people and suffers from extreme social anxiety, feeling like he's drowning when placed in uncomfortable social situations or scenarios where she doesn't know how to respond. This also causes him to go red in the face and clench his jaw, which other characters wrongfully interpret as him becoming angry. Through meeting Haru (and getting pulled into his plan to save the world), he becomes friends with him and Natsuki and develops his own strong interest in fishing."

Meursault -

"not only is he based on the character from camus' l'étranger who has actual scholarly debate on him being autistic, meursault is just… so autism. hes this stoic, terse guy with resting bitch face who doesnt really seem to fully process that he isnt showing any emotions and that that offputs people, and hes very blunt and literal with things. once another character asked if he had metal for brains as an insult and he responded by telling him the exact chemical composition of his brain to show that it is not metal. once the other characters made food so bad that when he tasted it he went on a minute straight long monologue about how much it sucked. he then proceeded to cook his own food which the giant evil chicken monster man that was judging the food tasted and said was so intensely done to the letter of the recipe that it was too boring. hes like if autism was a guy and that guy was french."

Zack -

"does things based almost solely on whether or not he wants to, at one point in the series, he doesn't tell the rest of the cast that he can fly a spaceship because he doesn't feel like it. he also take everything everyone else tells him seriously, such as when another character he knew as a kid said they were going to get married one day, he took it very seriously and was confused when said character tried to confess her feelings again and he said he thought their promise from when they were kids was still on."

Joujirou -

"This boy is autism incarnate. No social skills, no normal pain perception, complete weirdo. He even has a special interest which becomes a mild issue when he joins the main cast lol."

Alus the Star Runner -

"He’s a three-armed wyvern gunslinger with cool goggles and a lightsaber. Need I say more? …Okay then. Alus was born as a mutant cripple and rejected by his kind but managed to overcome this and rise up to become Flying Reptile Indiana Jones. He’s famed as the greatest adventurer in the land, but also struggles to keep up a conversation and prefers to remain on his own (which is especially unusual for wyverns, who usually gather in giant flocks). He has exactly one (1) friend, whom he completely fails to understand as a person but still values and respects immensely. Despite his difficulties with social interaction, he’s repeatedly shown to be incredibly resourceful and intelligent, with a single-minded drive and persistence unmatched by anyone else in the series. (Also canonically asexual, because who needs a family when you can fight dragons perfectly well on your own?)"

"He’s a shut-in weirdo with long messy hair, a sleep deprived look in his eyes, and one of the few students to have a hoodie as part of his school uniform. He’s a prodigal tech genius with the vibes of burn out and depression. He’s usually quite meek around people, but when he clicks with a conversation topic, he gets all energetic and fired up and sometimes a bit haughty too. To avoid going out of his room and interacting with people face to face, he invented a mobile tablet with text to speech. He stays up all night playing video games and while he has trouble with IRL relationships, he’s made a genuine friend out of one of his gaming buddies (who he doesn’t realize is actually one of his classmates). He stans an idol group and once got into a hacking war against some dorm mates over it. He rebuilt his dead brother as a robot who has become somewhat of a therapist to him. The only reason he went out on a holiday vacation with school acquaintances is due to the location being featured in an anime, then bonded with the one guy’s grandma when he realized his favorite girl was based on her. For the Halloween celebration, he convinced his dorm to theme themselves after his favorite B horror movie, constantly infodumping to people about it and going all out in recreating the special effects. In Book 5, he has a minor background arc of being forced to do public speaking. In another Halloween event, he was forced to be a back-up singer and managed to pull through despite the social anxiety. He’s the most autistic student in all of Night Raven College and possibly in all of Twisted Wonderland too."

Not Ushio

It is not Ushio.

Shinpei shoves his hands in his hair. He shakes his head, desperate to knock some sense into his racing thoughts.

It is not Ushio. The thing lying in his bed, wearing his old t-shirt. That is the one fact he knows, the one fact he has to hold onto, no matter what. No matter what it says, or does, or how it smiles or tilts its head. It is not Ushio!

Ushio died. She died three days ago. They held a funeral two days ago! He saw her, lying in the casket, fair skin two shades fairer in death. They asked him to help with the ceremony. To carry the casket. To help bury the girl he played in the waves with from five to fifteen.

Dead. His best friend since childhood is dead. This is not Ushio!

It stirs and Shinpei freezes.

His gaze darts over to it, watching carefully from the corner of his eyes. The creature settles and he releases a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding.

Shinpei slows his pacing, lowering his hands from his hair and crossing his arms over his chest.

Idiot, he’s going to wake the whole house with his neuroses! Then where would they be? Mio and Alan would find it here, this ‘Not Ushio’, and it would change everything because then they’d…

They’d…

There’s no telling what they’d do.

Shinpei rests his palm against his chin. He sends the shadow another glance, shoving his hair back from his face.

Who knows what they’d think? They could be fooled. If they let their emotion get the best of them, their yearning for their sister and daughter to return. They could believe this was her, if they couldn’t stay objective like Shinpei.

A bitter laugh struggles to escape and he clamps his hand over his mouth. He shakes his head, ducking it in disbelief, staring at the familiar floorboards that have turned suddenly alien.

It’s not easy. Maintaining a clear head. Not when this– this thing looks just like Ushio. Talks just like. Acts just like, hugs just like her, laughs just like her. But it isn’t. It’s not Ushio, so it has to be a shadow.

And Shinpei is an idiot for letting it stay in his house.

What else was I supposed to do?

He groans and puts his hands on his head, threading his fingers through his hair as he starts pacing again.

I couldn’t just send it back outside. Not alone, where she could get into who knows what trouble, and not at night. She was only wearing a swimsuit, for heaven’s sake! Even in the tropics…

No. Stop. No, she’s not human. This thing is not human!

A muffled sound.

Shinpei jerks to a stop. Eyes wide and locked on the door, ears straining for more.

Someone heard him. Alan got sick of his footsteps and is making his way down the hall, grumbling sleepily under his breath. Or Mio woke to get a glass of water and is now returning to her room, slowing in confusion as noises slip through the crack beneath Shinpei’s door.

He clenches his teeth. Leaning forward, every muscle in his body tensing to steel.

Yes? Is that it? Is it Mio?

The sound again. Muffled and indistinct.

And not coming from the hallway.

Shinpei turns around. Feet scuffing softly on the floorboards. His eyes search the dim. They find Ushio’s shadow in the bed again.

Its shoulders rise and fall under Shinpei’s Summer Festival t-shirt, the green one from the year before he left. But the motion is not the steady rhythm of sleep.

It’s a shudder.

Shinpei lowers his hands from his head. They hover mid-air, uncertain, as he creeps a half-step forward.

“U–Ushio?” he asks the darkness.

Ushio. He shouldn’t call it that. Not her name. But what else can he–

“Monster.”

He blinks. “What–?”

“Monster.” Her voice rises, wavering and tense with anguish. “She called me a monster.”

“Who? …Mio?”

“Mio.” She gasps the name. Clutching the covers to her chest. “My– my Mio…”

She breaks off into wordless tears. Body shaking in earnest now, wails dropping to choked sobs as she remembers she has to keep quiet. So no one finds her. So no one knows.

She is alone with this.

Shinpei’s chest rises and falls with deep, quiet breaths. He watches the shadow, picturing the tears sliding from her face to soak his pillow. The damp stickiness of her wet eyelashes, the tight knit of that blonde brow Shinpei knows so well. He doesn’t have to close his eyes to see it. For his mind to find what his vision can’t in the suffocating dark.

He looks away. To the worn hardwood, unforgiving and cold beneath his bare feet. To the thin strip of moonlight escaping through the gap between curtain and wall, seeping across the floor and outlining the distance between Shinpei and the sobbing form in his bed.

His feet make a quarter turn. Toes slipping into the silver glow. Teasing the edges of the path promised by the moon. It pulls him in, leading him away from the window, to the head of the bed. To the girl the moonlight kisses the face of so gently.

Shinpei stares down at her blanketed form. Curled on her side, legs tangled in the covers, face buried in the sheets.

His hand slips into his pocket. He fingers the necklace there, tracing the radiating lines of the seashell. His hand tightens into a fist around it.

And relaxes.

The sheets are cool as Shinpei climbs into bed behind Ushio’s shadow.

“Sh, sh,” he soothes, wrapping gentle arms around her waist. “Sh…”

“Don’t tell me it’s okay!” She tenses under his touch. He feels her push against his chest as she twists to glare back at him. “I know what you think, the same as Mio! You both think I’m– I’m…”

“Ushio.”

He says the name and she stills. The wave-tossed depths behind her eyes shifting in the spare moonlight. The anger melting. And something sharper and softer and more anguished sweeps in to take its place.

Shinpei feels it now. In every curve of her yet shaking body.

She is terrified.

“Ushio.” He swallows. His gaze drops to the shell necklace, lying white against the sheets in front of her. “I–”

He closes his eyes. He inhales slowly..

“Whoever you are… Ushio or not… You are not a monster.”

He feels her staring at him, without opening his eyes. For one, two, three seconds, maybe ten. A short eternity.

Then she lets out a shaking breath. The mattress shifts beneath them as she settles back against him. Her hair brushes his face, smelling of salt and ocean and the strawberry ice cream they’d race each other to the pier to get every first day of summer.

She calms. Her breathing evens out. And, eventually, she sleeps.

Drenched in memories, in the exhaustion of the day, in the warmth and scent that belongs to his very best friend… Shinpei can’t help but do the same.

as for Haine she's from this anime called summertime render which i watched a few years ago, i don't remember much about the story anymore because it had some freaky time traveling stuff going on but i deeply enjoyed the series

The worst thing about Disney being the ones who got Summer Time Rendering is that they refused to simulcast it in North America, killing the hype the series would naturally have garnered if they had, and then unceremoniously dumped it onto Hulu without so much as a tweet to announce it, so no one knew it was there even when it finally WAS available.

The second worst thing is the knowledge that they will never ever ever in a million years give that shit a physical release because that is how little they fucking care about the anime they license, which breaks my heart because I love this series so much I would pay out the ass for a limited edition Blu-Ray set with like a soundtrack and an artbook and shit.

The third worst thing is that because they killed any and all knowledge of the series' existence and thus any chance at success it may have had, they also killed any chance that we'll see an official release of the visual novel, Summer Time Rendering: Another Horizon. Tie-in games for shows like KonoSuba and Re:Zero and DATE A LIVE and even Quintessential fucking Quintuplets get English releases these days because their anime are successful and prove there is a market for them, but since Summer Time Rendering wasn't the big hit it would've been if Disney hadn't fucked it, there's no proof there's a market for Another Horizon, so it'll never get officially translated, and the fanbase is so small even a fan translation seems unlikely, so I'll never get to play it, even though I'm sure it's good!

The fourth worst thing is that I now have no one to talk to about how good it is because no one else fucking watched it.

The fifth worst thing is I had to pirate it even though my family has Hulu because Disney adamantly refuses to actually subtitle most of their anime, going for closed captions instead, which I cannot fucking watch because I find [waves crashing] and [gasping] to be really fucking distracting. Like, I'm super glad closed captioning is an option for the people who need it, but I want a plain subtitle option that just translates the dialogue, goddammit! Why is every fucking series Disney has picked up (other than Undead Unluck for some reason???) like this??? JUST GIVE ME A FUCKING REGULAR SUBTITLE OPTION, DISNEY, I WANT TO SUPPORT THE OFFICIAL RELEASE BUT YOU ARE MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE

Just cause I finished rewatching it again

Summertime Rendering is one of my favourite stories of all time.

It is just so solid front to back, the characters and pacing is fantastic, the tone is great, and it is my go to standard for how much gore and violence is the perfect amount to punctuate a given story.

It's so goddam clever down to the last detail, and on top of that the anime's production is off the fucking charts.

Watch it.

Man, Summertime Rendering got done dirty by Disney! This show's fucking great! Keeps the twists coming and really plays around with the timeloop gimmick in some really creative ways. Even the one twist that I didn't like because I felt was too corny suddenly got explained later on and then made sense.
