This post is a sweet little take that is reminiscent of a cross between a tasty mule and something a little more tropical. 🏝️🍊, super easy to make and ultra enjoyable. Featured from our brother in Hawaii, the infamous Chris at @thejoyofdrinking Cocktail: “Mando Machuca Fizz” Glass: Collins Aloha! I recently received a box of Regatta ginger beer and wanted to try it out in a simple cocktail. Since I still have a bag of mandarin “cuties”, they would make my ‘fruit’ ingredient. I chose the delicious Machuca for the spirit and with those 3 ingredients I stopped! 😉 • This is another one of those cocktails you really are going to want to make. This is a sit outside on a lovely, warm afternoon and just contemplate the awesomeness of existence kind of drink. 🤩 • A note on the Regatta ginger beer: This is a very sweet and delicious ginger beer and you will not need to add any other sweetener to your drink when using it! 😋 • Ingredients: 3oz / 90ml ginger beer @regattacraftmixers 2oz / 60ml fresh mandarin juice 1.5oz / 45ml Machuca rum (float) @machucaworld • Preparation: Fill glass to the top with ice. Fine strain mandarin juice into glass. Add ginger beer. Slowly pour Machuca over the ice on top. Garnish with fruit wedge (mine is candy) and dehydrated mandarins (@thecocktailgarnish). It came out amazing for my first hooch🤣🍹This subs out the seltzer in the original recipe and it adds a big layer of extra funk and spice that’s mind blowing. When all is said and done, sometimes you just want something fun.
This is that. A nice rum punch to sip on with plenty of fresh citrus juice and no need to wash a glass when I was done. For @bestcocktails September Garnish competition I decided to skip the glass altogether and just make it garnish all the way down. The vessel itself was a hollowed out grapefruit with citrus peel sea life cut to shape with a sharp paring knife. And when all was done, the whole thing could just get tossed right into the compost bin to eventually feed future generations of oranges.
Under the Vitamin C
2 oz @humboldtdistillery Spiced Rum .5 oz Curacao 2 oz Grapefruit juice 1 oz Orange Juice .5 oz lime juice 1 oz orgeat 6 dashes Angostura Bitters
Super slick green glass straw from @surfsidesips.
Shake everything with ice and pour right into hollowed out Grapefruit. If you’re going to insert other garnishes in the side like I did, just be careful not to pierce all the way through the skin otherwise you’ll spring a leak.

Summer into Fall Stout Float (or Fall into Winter for the Southern Hemisphere) •ice cream •stout •that’s it There are a lot of fancy recipes for stout floats out there, but I find the best way to do one is to pick an excellent stout & a terrific ice cream. That’s it. (Add espresso & turn it into an affogato.) I used my husband’s @lefthandbrewing Nitro Milk Stout — one of a few beers I don’t think of as simply proto-whisky. The straw is my new baby from Andrew @surfsidesips. Isn’t she lovely? Classes started many places this month, including @yale. I don’t normally teach in the fall & as of now, I’m not sure what will happen this spring. I’ve been giving private talks online & will continue until we can all be in-person again. It’s not the same of course, but there are some benefits. For one, I can see people’s faces up-close. For another, people can make their own drinks — and garnishes. When I speak in person, I don’t usually make drinks. And never fancy garnishes. I can make a very good drink. But doing it while talking is not my forté. I have great admiration for bartender friends who speak to guests while making 3 different drinks at a time, all night long. But speaking is a full body activity for me, one that makes even iced tea is a challenge when I’m deep in a topic. But I also think we learn little in life if we don’t challenge ourselves. With that in mind, I’ll be doing an Instagram live with my pal @curi0usjenn (the mind behind #jenncairn) on Tuesday September 15, 3pm Pacific time/4:30pm Mountain/6:30pm Eastern/11:30pm London time. The plan is for us to each teach each other something more complicated than the drink up top ⬆️, maybe even a garnish — which if you know either of us, should be…interesting. 12 Either way, we hope you’ll tune in (if that’s the right phrase) because if you’re reading this far, we want to chat with you! This is garnished with one of the hibiscus flowers from my yard. I just love these flowers, they look like a tropical vacation!⠀ ⠀ Tropical Mama⠀ 8 oz pineapple juice⠀ 8 oz guava-mango juice⠀ 8 oz pear juice⠀ 1 cup packed fresh basil leaves⠀ 12 oz Vodka⠀ 4 oz lime juice⠀ Prosecco⠀ Add together juices. Take 1 cup of juice with fresh basil, boil then simmer for 15 minutes. Cool and strain back into batch. Add vodka and chill. My cousin gifted me a bottle of @passoa passion fruit liqueur and I whipped up this delicious drink. 2 oz. Pineapple Juice 2 oz. Light Rum 1 oz. Passoa 1/2 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice 1/4-1/2 oz. Long ago (yet only last year) I traveled quite a bit. Lately I go nowhere yet am somehow busier. Anyone else experiencing that? Recently a million plus people in my region lost power for over a week due to Hurricane Isaias. No running water, damaged cell towers & impassable roads made leaving own home difficult. Yet somehow social media was uninterrupted & I spoke with folks around the world while cut off from all else. For a while now I’ve been working on a sense-of-place project: terroir, provenance, & so much more. But the juxtaposition between being tightly homebound while writing about the meaning of place in the drinks world has actually added to the perspective gained from my years spent visiting distilleries, farms, production facilities, & bars so closely tied to their locations, getting to know the people who work in & around the drink world, making possible what gets poured into all our glasses. I still believe that fully understanding any place requires going there: putting your boots or wheels on the ground & seeing/hearing/smelling/listening in a way that differs from secondhand knowledge. But learning about a place you don’t live also requires talking to people who live there — actually engaging with them about what they do, how they do it, & how what they do relates to where they live. There’s so much emphasis on eating, drinking, buying local these days. (I get that. A lot of what our family eats comes from our property.) But I’d put it differently. *Respect locality.* Be aware of where things come from & what the impact is when things aren’t local. Then savor the choices you make to eat & drink things that come from elsewhere. Appreciate where THEY come from. When this #$@% pandemic is over* I’d like to visit some of the amazing people who have given me their time & more over the past few months.
