Also on the topic of commercialization of stuffed animals, I know every teen/adult collector loves plushies of fandom characters, but there's legitimate concerns about how those (compared to generic animals/creatures) inhibit children's creativity and encourage a consumerist mindset where they "need" the official branded plushie to play pretend, as opposed to improvising with a plushie they already have that could play other roles as well.
For example As a kid I loved Warriors, and I had a black cat Webkinz which I could pretend was Ravenpaw or Crowfeather or Hollyleaf or one of my OCs or any other black cat whether Warriors or otherwise... Compared to the official branded Ravenpaw who can only ever be Ravenpaw.
Of course I'm not saying branded plushies should be banned or anything, and I don't think they do any harm to teens/adults who can think critically about consumerism, but it's concerning when it comes to children, especially nowadays that more and more plush companies are doing brand deals. (Build-a-Bear originally never had licensed characters but now they make up like literally half of the selection.)
Idk if I explained this well but you can look up talks/writings by Susan Linn (a child psychologist & activist) for more detail, her books are why I originally started thinking about this
Yessss I totally agree, I hate seeing the flexibility in play and imagination sell out for commercial plushies. I totally did that with my Webkinz cats, too - I remember playing with my Alley Cat and Charcoal Cat!

Hee-Hawesome Fact #9: Duck Duck is the only one out of the four main pals to not be based on a real-life Mister Rogers' character. However, she shares multiple similarities with an occasional guest character on the latter show named Audrey Duck, including their love for literature. Ironically, if you search up 'audrey duck mister rogers,' on Google, one of the results that shows up is a Donkey Hodie website.
To this day, Audrey Duck continues to make public appearances with her puppeteer, Dr. Susan Linn.

Finding it hard to review Daniel isn’t real.
It’s good horror, it flips the script on mental illness, it’s got this slightly cosmic horror element that’s not as simple as your classic demons from christianity. It would have helped to know that it’s part of a planned trilogy so there’s unfinished business and that the two main actors are nepotism babies. Because wow it is uncanny watching these two dudes and going “oh there’s something so familiar here in the face and mannerisms” and then of course it’s son of Tim Robbins/Susan Sarandon vs son of Arnold Schwarzenegger. It also relies rather heavily on flashing lights and jump cuts to make you queasy and that’s just a personal thing: I find it tacky and it implies you didn’t trust your actors to convey anxiety or excitement or dread.
The soundtrack is by Clark, it’s not his most iconic stuff but he’s perfect for cosmic horror. The moment we meet Daniel, I had to grab my phone to check because that sounded a lot like a less danceable version of Winter Linn (flashing black and white graphics). His dissonant tracks hit a lot less than the ones where he writes a proper tune then contorts it (see Experts in Light and Amor)
There are a couple of things that don’t quite fit, Luke’s first seizure or panic attack shows things he doesn’t know yet and the workings of Daniel’s mind palace and what is meant by Abyss. There’s a moment towards the end that is too cheesy, it’s venom!spiderman but clunkier... like the director accidentally made something really good by creating something so conventional and overdone then flipping the script but then is unable to keep that momentum and we return to classic small scale tropes.
Another silly little nitpick I have is characters swallowing a pill and expecting immediate change, it’s part of what’s frustrating about panic attack and pain medicine in pill form: the forty minute wait for it to hit the bloodstream, the three month wait for tapering on to brain meds and seeing if it does the right thing. It’s a thing Luke would have known from his mother so it stands out as stupid.
?/10 - I don’t know. It’s better than your average horror flick but the bar is very low. The acting is uneven, the script is uneven, the scope widens then tightens again.

What characters are the easiest/hardest to do swaps for? Which one did you get the most? The least?
hmmmm.. good question.
im not sure theres like an "easiest" vs "hardest" cause theres a lot of factors at play, so much as there's like... the way things are laid out tends to make things naturally look pretty good. or how fun they are i guess. which would be like... lambda, nine, celica, es, tsubaki, izayoi, rachel. in no order. those are fun. and then like.. hakumen, arakune, bang, susan, and maybe a teensy bit tao are less fun imo cause their indices are largely simplified and it hampers... customizability. i guess. if that makes sense. hakumen and arakune in particular ngl, but that's mostly cause they were there from the start and shit was weird back then so i get it. (yes i see there's a pattern here it was not intentional hjfhdkahf) tager is an honorable mention cause he looks godawful with any skin color that isnt red its so terrible it physically pains me. put some red on that beast.
in terms of numbers, that would take a lot more investigative work than i would give it by virtue of a) checking the volume of all the character palette folders ive made would be extremely tedious (derogatory), b) i dont save all the requests i get, and c) i dont post everything i do, not by a long shot, so off the cuff i'd say... the most is like kagura or nine? leaning more towards nine cause i was actually going through stuff i have saved for her and its well over 100 files. celica's actually high up too just cause i think she's fun, and the least is probably valk just cause idk i dont do much with him and not many people ask for him i guess
thats just blazblue tho. uhhh in terms of unib... linne's kinda difficult sometimes. wagner's pretty fun. vati hyde carmine and orie too definitely. ive probably been asked for hyde or seth the most but i genuinely have nooooo clue there. and wald the least almost definitely. maybe akatsuki. sorry chesto man
this is all mostly half educated guesses so anything not opinion based is probably wrong hjdhfhsdjkah

I think whoever designed the book cover made a big mistake using white typeface, as the 'Art' part of the title is far less visible over the cream background. Just saying.

The Maine Senate race 2020 will be held on November 3 in the US. This Senate race is among the most closely watched in the nation. General Election Candidates 2020 State of Maine Voters in Maine will elect one member to the US Senate in the general election. Maine's Senate race is heating up, with the primary now in the rear-view mirror. Susan Collins (R) and Sara Gideon (D) will be on the ballot on the coming November election, along with two independent candidates, pro-Trump conservative Max Linn and former Green Party candidate Lisa Savage. So, these four candidates will be on the ballot in November.  The elected candidate for the US. Senate will begin their six-year term on January 3, 2021. Republican and Democratic Party Primary Results A Republican Party primary was held on July 14, 2020, in Maine to elect the Republican candidate for the upcoming general election. Incumbent Collins was unopposed in the Republican primary for the Senate seat from Maine. A Democratic Party primary was held on March 3rd, 2020, to decide which Democratic candidate would run in the state's general election on November 3, 2020. Maine State House Speaker Sara Gideon decisively won by defeating two opponents Betsy Sweet and Bre Kidman in the Democratic primary She received more than 70% of the total vote in the state Senate primary and became the Democratic nominee for US senate. Maine Senate Race Democratic Primary Results 2020 Sara Gideon - the Democratic Nominee Speaker Sara Gideon Gideon will now officially take on toughest general election Republican opponent, Sen. Susan Collins, in a tossup race. This is going to be one of the most anticipated races in the state history and could determine whether Republicans or Democrats control of the Senate in November. In a streamed speech on Facebook, Gideon thanked Kidman and Sweet for their campaigns, but she quickly went after her opponent Collins, calling her a part of a broken system. Gideon claimed Maine deserves a champion in the US senate who will bring people together to overcome the challenges and make real progress to improve the lives of people across the country. Gideon said we need new leadership because, after 24 years in Washington, Senator Collins has become a part of that broken system, putting special interests and her political party first, and Mainers know it and feel it.  Susan Collins - the Republican Nominee Senator Susan Collins Senator Susan Collins has had an extensive carrier of public service, and in 2015 she was considered one of America's most beloved senators after winning reelection with about 70 percent of the vote. But in politics, "past performance is no guarantee of future results," and this is particularly true in the case of Collins in 2020. Collins undermined a political brand that she has built over the years with her decision to support alleged accused attempted rapist Brett Kavanaugh, who ruled to create a rigged system and the Super PACs that can spend unlimited money in elections. She walked away from the commitment she made to the Mainers. She was also criticized for her stance on the impeachment of President Donald Trump. She voted to exculpate Trump on both charges of abuse of power as well as obstruction of Congress in its inquiry of his dealings with Ukraine. In an interview with CBS, Ms. Collins said, "she believed that Mr. Trump had "learned from this case" and that he will be "much more cautious in the future." According to the latest poll, released by Colby College, Collins is trailing Democrat Sara Gideon by five points. Kristen Dalton of South Berwick said about the political reputation of Collins that, "I was a huge Susan Collins fan, but I'm incredibly disappointed with her Brett Kavanaugh decision."  Independent US Senate candidate Max Linn Independent US Senate candidate Max Linn,
a retired financial planner from Bar Harbor, will also be on the ballot in the general election on November 3, 2020. Linn had a colorful and controversial political history in Florida before emerging in Maine politics in 2018. He was a firm supporter of President Donald Trump, and previously in 2018, he was disqualified following accusations of fraudulent signatures on his ballot access petitions. Max Linn's Conditional Endorsement of  Susan Collins for US Senate Earlier, Max Linn spokesperson Matthew McDonald said Linn will no longer be on the November ballot and will drop out of Senate race in Maine. He will endorse incumbent Susan Collins officially and announced his withdrawal via Zoom on Tuesday, July 28. Later on, he decided to quit only if US Sen. Susan Collins agrees to a series of demands which she is virtually certain to reject. He told reporters on a Zoom call that he intends to stay in the race unless Collins accepts each of his demands. He said a five years moratorium on all immigration is needed because it doesn't make sense to bring in cheap labor until our communities and families are financially stable. He is also opposing the Central Maine Power hydropower corridor, feels forgiveness of all student loan debt is needed to "release millions of Americans from the crippling debt of overpriced education" so they can use their earnings to buy homes, raise families, and start businesses. He also demanded a $5,000 cash payment to all Maine families by next June, which would help people save their homes and future, as well as provide additional relief for small businesses in the state.  He also is endorsing term limits, since Collins originally campaigned for the Senate race in 1996. He set a deadline for Collins of Monday, August 3, by 10 am to respond to his demands. Linn also said that he had worked for months to be a part of the  US Senate race, and never intended to abandon the race. He also said that he had political offers and personal threats in order to keep him out of the 2020 Senate race. Independent US Senate candidate Lisa Savage Lisa Savage is also an independent candidate running for election to the US Senate to represent Maine. She is on the ballot, along with the other three candidates in the general election in November. In response to Max Linn's demands, Lisa Savage said, "Linn's declaration seems a bit silly." She also said that she would welcome any candidate in the race that did the necessary work to get on the ballot. Bre Kidman, one of three candidates in Maine's recent Democratic primary for US Senate, has announced that she is endorsing Lisa Savage. Bre Kidman Endorses Lisa Savage for US Senate Bre Kidman Candidate former Maine U.S Senate Bre Kidman aligned with Lisa Savage on key issues like Medicare for all, the green new deal, tuition-free public higher education, and ending endless wars and mass incarceration. She also said that we must think critically about which candidates are willing to truly stand with the people against the unchecked influence of corporate power in this country. With millions of dollars going into attack ads meant to obscure the fact that neither major party candidate supports policies that Maine's populace favor by overwhelming margins, Lisa Savage stands out as the clear choice in this race. Savage admired Kidman's "vibrancy and compassion" on the campaign. She said that Lisa's focus on those who are struggling to pay their rent and feed their children is my focus, too. Judge Kavanaugh Effect on Maine Senate Race 2020 In Conclusion, listen to the Video to realize the impact of Judge Kavanaugh on Maine Senate Race 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PDWMfwyqWU https://thesheel.com/senators-up-for-election-2020-in-usa/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_United_States_Senate_election_in_Maine

2022 AKTIV Against Cancer Award Luncheon Honors adidas, Lowe Nov. 3 in N.Y.
Tumblr media
AKTIV Against Cancer, the organization co-founded by legendary runner Grete Waitz and Helle Aanesen, today announced it will honor adidas and Olympic Champion Chaunté Lowe for outstanding contributions to the field of Exercise Oncology at their eighth annual awards luncheon. The reception will be held November 3 at the historic New York Athletic Club.
Over more than 10 years of collaboration, adidas has accounted for more than $10M in donations toward AKTIV Against Cancer’s groundbreaking exercise oncology research and programs. United by the power of sport, the two organizations have worked together to help those fighting cancer improve their quality of life through physical activity.
“adidas has been an incredible supporter of AKTIV Against Cancer since our inception and has always embodied our mission to the highest degree,” said AKTIV Against Cancer CEO Helle Aanesen. “We simply couldn't have done what we have done without adidas. There is no one better to honor than Grete's longtime sponsor and our biggest believer, adidas.”
AKTIV Against Cancer’s partnership with adidas was born out of adidas’ relationship with the late Grete, who passed away in 2011. Grete had a storied history with adidas during her ground-breaking long-distance running career, having worn and promoted its apparel and footwear for more than 30 years.
“At adidas, we believe sport has the power to change lives, and few athletes have personified that motto as thoroughly as Grete Waitz,” said Adrian Leek, Sportswear & Footwear Vice President at adidas. “Our partnership with AKTIV Against Cancer represents our gratitude for everything Grete accomplished during her remarkable life, and we are proud to supported such a great cause for more than a decade.”
Additionally, AKTIV Against Cancer will honor four-time Olympian, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist and former high jump world champion Chaunté Lowe with the Gabrielle Grunewald Inspiration Award for her courage and her dedication to expanding resources and support for others fighting breast cancer. Lowe is a Global Ambassador for the American Cancer Society and a spokesperson for a new partnership between pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and patient advocacy group Susan G. Komen.
Since 2015, AKTIV Against Cancer has hosted the AKTIV Against Cancer Award Luncheon in an effort to continuously honor the legacy of the co-founder, the late Grete Waitz. The award recognizes leaders who demonstrate great philanthropic efforts using health and fitness as a platform – a belief that was instrumental to Grete and at the core of AKTIV Against Cancer’s mission.
Mary Wittenberg, Global CEO of Virgin Sport, received the inaugural award in 2015 and running legend Meb Keflezighi received it in 2016. In 2017, AKTIV Against Cancer honored The Rudin Family for their long-standing commitment to the TCS New York City Marathon and the late professional runner Gabriele Grunewald for her commitment to continue running through her cancer and inspiring many to be physically active through treatments.
More recently, the organization honored Olympic Champion and cancer survivor Kikkan Randall and Dr. Jordan Metzl in 2018, Chip Gaines, Jeff Rochford & Aubrey Barr in 2019, Shannon Miller in 2020, and Cycle For Survival co-founder David Linn in 2021.

Here’s something I know you’ve heard before--Dare, by the Human League! One of the most famous and widely-acclaimed synth-pop albums there is, Dare was a huge game changer. Find out why by watching my video, or reading the transcript, after the break.
Welcome to Passionate Reply, and welcome to Great Albums! Today, I’m going to be talking about one of the single most important albums in the history of electronic music, and, perhaps, in Western popular music as a whole. It’s Dare, the third full LP from the Human League, first released in 1981. While there had been two albums released under this name prior to Dare, these are considerably more obscure.
Music: “Empire State Human”
While “Empire State Human” has a catchy and affable chorus, it’s still a few shades too weird and avant-garde to be a pop hit. In the early days, the Human League’s experimental, underground sound was driven mainly by founding members Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh. Prior to the recording of Dare, Marsh and Ware had already left the group, and would go on to form Heaven 17. Frontman Phil Oakey, and newly hired backup singers Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley, were without a leg to stand on, as none of them had any serious background in music composition or playing instruments.
While the situation looked quite dire, the trio would find a new musical bedrock in Ian Burden, who had played keyboards on their most recent tour as a session musician. Against the crude, naive, unprofessional vocals of Oakey, Catherall, and Sulley, Burden would provide simple, but competent melodies. The other key ingredient of this new sound was professional production, which would come from Martin Rushent. Despite working with many guitar-oriented acts prior, Rushent was one of the first producers who had deliberately devoted himself to working with electronic instruments at the time. Put all of that together, and you’ve got synth-pop magic, like nobody else had hammered out before.
Music: “Don’t You Want Me”
If you came to this video with even a lick of knowledge about Western pop, then you probably know “Don’t You Want Me” quite well. “Don’t You Want Me” wasn’t the first electronic pop song, nor was it the first major hit to feature a chiefly electronic instrumentation. The real reason it was such a game changer is that it’s ultimately a very ordinary pop song, underneath all of that. Songs like Gary Numan’s “Cars,” or OMD’s “Enola Gay,” were comparatively easy to write off as mere high-concept novelty. Many felt that their vision of a future full of machine music would blow over, the way jetpacks and flying cars had failed to revolutionize the world. But “Don’t You Want Me” proved that you could write an otherwise unremarkable love song, set it to a fairly unambitious synth backing, and achieve major pop success. “Don’t You Want Me” is that watershed moment, where synthesisers start presenting a credible threat to guitars, and everything that they stand for. Moreso than anything else that was released in this era, “Don’t You Want Me” is the reason why “pop” is, at this point, assumed to be electronic by default.
While the sheer influence of this track can’t be overstated, it’s also far from the only thing Dare, as an album, has to offer. In fact, “Don’t You Want Me” is the very last track on it, and its apparent simplicity is heavily contextualized by everything that comes before it. Take “Love Action,” for instance, which was the first single from the album, and one of the band’s best-known tracks.
Music: “Love Action”
“Love Action” is certainly not devoid of pop sensibility, and its being a chart hit makes plenty of sense. But I think it’s decidedly stranger and less conventional than “Don’t You Want Me,” with its piercing intro and glitchy synth effects. While its lyrics aren’t challenging, in an obtrusive manner, they seem to read as a sort of parody of a pop song, declaiming the superiority of limerence or casual affairs--“no talking, just looking.” It’s a pop anthem that’s aware of its own disposability, and the sort of culture of disposability and frivolousness that it’s participating in. Another strikingly ironic number is the album’s opener, “The Things That Dreams Are Made Of.”
Music: “The Things That Dreams Are Made Of”
With its confident proclamations about what “everybody needs,” and unquestioning praise of petty luxuries like ice cream and vacations, the saccharine “The Things That Dreams Are Made Of” is even more pointedly satirical, a wan hymn to the pleasures of postwar prosperity. But even if this track maintains a surface level “believability,” there are still a number of darker tracks to be had on Dare, which more strongly recall the style of those earlier albums. Take a listen to “Do or Die.”
Music: “Do or Die”
One of the more confrontational or frustrated tracks on Dare, “Do or Die” still maintains something of a pop core, and it’s easy enough to sing along to. What I think really stands out about it, though, especially for the time, is the use of mechanical percussion. Prior to this point, acts like Gary Numan, OMD, and even Kraftwerk still had human drummers who physically hit things in their bands. Even Giorgio Moroder’s “I Feel Love” used traditional percussion, despite featuring nothing but Moog synthesisers and the human voice besides. It wasn’t only the guitar that feared for its relevance during this time, but also the drum kit. The dense, rattling backing of “Do or Die” was made with a Linn “drum computer,” and remains an impressive use of it that’s still mesmerizing to listen to. But perhaps the most avant-garde track to be found on *Dare* is “Seconds.”
Music: “Seconds”
While “Seconds” feels sort of warm and dreamy at first, its startling gunshot casts doubt on just how pleasant we ought to feel. “Seconds” is actually telling the story of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, addressing us listeners as though we embody the infamous gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald. The titular “seconds” apply to the brief moments of apparent happiness and security we feel before something goes wrong, and those narrow margins of time during which everything in our lives can change in an instant. While it’s significantly shorter, I can’t help but think it recalls the high-concept narrative tracks done by the earlier incarnation of the Human League, such as “Zero As a Limit.”
Dare’s iconic cover, a powerful symbol of 80s synth-pop to this day, was inspired by fashion magazines such as *Vogue.* While the design would crib the title, the typeface, and the face-focused composition from a 1979 cover of UK *Vogue,* the stark, bare white frame that surrounds this close-cropped headshot of Oakey is a major distinction. Floating in this sterile bath of emptiness, and borderline anonymized, it feels like the interchangeable mask of someone living out a mechanized and mass-produced existence. It’s an image that almost plays into how detractors of electronic music have decried its seemingly emotionless, inhuman ambiance, and it rides that enmity with a deliberate, defiant dignity. It says, we are what you think we are, and we’re damn proud of it. Much like the bold and brash title implies, the cover of *Dare* is a provocation, perhaps even a threat. While the cover isn’t particularly beautiful to me, as many others are, I think its austere ugliness is deeply purposeful, and that’s something I’m compelled to admire.
Despite the breakthrough success of Dare, the Human League’s 1984 follow-up, Hysteria, was a relative flop, plagued by troubled recording sessions and a lack of consistent vision for the band and their sound. Its lead single, “The Lebanon,” would achieve modest success, and its use of rock guitar and surprisingly topical lyrics make it feel very different than what you’ll find on Dare.
Music: “The Lebanon”
Though they would eventually go on to have one last major hit, in 1986’s “Human,” the Human League never developed mainstream staying power, and their core trio’s reliance on outside writers and producers left them without a firm artistic identity to fall back on. They’re still around today, performing concerts that revisit their best-known work from the past, but they never recreated the fruitful environment and industry connections that made Dare possible. Still, it’s safe to say that Dare is an inescapable presence in the history of electronic pop, looming over all subsequent works like some inscrutable Sphinx, a lightning in a bottle success whose influence remains all around us.
My favourite song on Dare is “Darkness.” As the title implies, it’s one of the more dreary, gothic numbers you’ll encounter on the album, narrating the harrowing, paranoid mindstate of an insomniac. I don’t particularly struggle with sleep, but I do have a habit of being awake all night and sleeping all day, so I love nighttime-themed songs. Plus, the lyrics of this song make reference to “seeing sounds” and “hearing colours,” a phenomenon called synesthesia. I’m not sure if anyone in the Human League really experiences this, but I do--which is part of why I’m so strongly interested in music. But enough about me! That’s all for today, thanks for listening!
Music: “Darkness”

Poll: Susan Collins trails challenger Sara Gideon by small margin; Biden leading Trump statewide
WASHINGTON – With less than a week until Election Day, Republican Sen. Susan Collins is trailing Democratic challenger Sara Gideon by a slim margin, according to a poll released Wednesday.
Gideon, the speaker of the Maine House, leads Collins, 47% to 43%, among likely voters, according to the poll by Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and first reported by USA TODAY. A combined 7% of voters are supporting Independent candidates Lisa Savage (5%) and Max Linn (2%).
Dan Shea, Colby College Government Department chair and lead researcher on the poll, noted there hasn’t been much movement over the past few months between Gideon and Collins, as there are few undecided voters left.
"For all that money, and all this attention, and all those efforts, the electorate seems pretty well stuck where they started several months ago," he told USA TODAY.
Democrats hope to flip Collins' seat in an effort to win back the Senate; Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority. Largely due to President Donald Trump’s unpopularity in the state, Collins is considered one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents this election.
As a result, Collins, who was first elected in 1996, has attempted to distance herself from Trump and has repeatedly criticized the president. She has not said whether she is voting for Trump and said she wrote in former Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan in 2016.

Chapter Thirty-Seven Vandalism and The Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur
Rainbow Week it appeared had invigorated Baroness Silverglade. For the very next morning she called an employee meeting over breakfast. Everyone from her children, to the people who worked the shops and restaurants, and the stable help were all in attendance.
Over waffles with vanilla ice cream and piled high with mixed berries and served with duck egg omelets, the Baroness sipped her coffee before she said without any preamble. “We have several projects that need to be handled in the upcoming weeks before Midsummer. While most of our house has been put in order, and we have received high marks on our recent inspection.” The Baroness’ lips tightened since it had been anonymous and she’d only received the results after it’d been completed. “There are still things left to finish and the rest of our domain hasn’t been so lucky.”
No one quite dared to say anything.
“As for the Winterwell family, I have sent a strongly worded admonishment to Baron Winterwell about paying more attention outside of that mockery of what he calls a town and to the rest of his part of the county. If I have to step in, I will be informing Count Marchenghast.” The baroness swiftly buttered her toast. “Fortunately, you ladies are a credit to your various upbringings and are an asset to this county.”
Not even Linda knew what to say to that. A simple thank you didn’t seem sufficient. Not that the Baroness seemed to require any responses. This was her meeting and interruptions weren’t on the agenda.
The Baroness’ knife went on the side of her plate. “Ms. Lily, please arrange for me to meet with Ms. Melissa of the Valedale Running Bulls? Anytime today will be preferable.”
“Yes, Baroness,” Lily made a mental note to text Melissa after the meal was over.
“The contractors will be starting our permanent event pavilion over the next week. Something about having to build the proper molds to have a level floor. It involves a big pipe and honestly, as long as they get it done and its level, I don’t care how they manage it. After the pavilion has been finished, we will be moving onto to the race track.”
Godfrey appeared with several boards filled with pictures and architectural sketches. He placed them on easels so everyone could see them properly.
“The racetrack will reflect the pride of the Silverglade family and honor the prior Moon Riders and Aideen,” the Baroness said. “Those who come to compete and to watch the races will see the care and grandeur of the place, and give our family the respect it deserves.”
There was a very large entrance arch over what would be the main entrance and it was perpendicular to the rest of the building. To either side of it were banks of columns and then each side had a porch with statues of women dressed in Greek clothes. Those must be the former Moon Riders of the Silverglade family and Aideen.
The inside stands had more columns holding up the roofs. The roofs curved inwards where there were stairs. The stands curved around both ends of the track.
“Antonia, the Silver Glade will be providing food for an outdoor café at the entrance,” the Baroness said. “There will be stables for the competitors on the first floor of the stands, while the atrium will be the ticketing area. I won’t expect you ladies to take care of the stables at the race track as well. We will be hiring specifically for the times the race track is in use. I won’t ask you to put up with a rival club so nearby. Nor will I stand for another club near my manor.”
“Thank you, Baroness,” Lily murmured. It was the only appropriate thing to say.
“While the contractors are working on that, we shall be dealing with the shameful prospect that is Valedale,” the Baroness took a bite and wiped at her lips. “And for that we’re going to have to find out how bad things are and how far this has spread.”
Linda cleared her throat. “There’s a scientist in Crescent Moon Village that knows who to test soil and water samples, Dr. Hayden.”
“He’s a bit of a grouch,” Lily warned.
“I can deal with grouches as long as they can do the work,” the Baroness nodded.
“He’s an entomologist,” Linda added tentatively.
“Then he would have to keep an eye on the water and the soil to see if it is effecting the bugs,” the Baroness’ lips twitched. “Or at least, he should be instead of capturing them and pinning them to boards.”
“I don’t know if that’s his type of entomology,” Lily murmured. “I don’t think Ginny and Susan have much to do with him.”
“Or want to,” Pauline added.
“Lily,” the Baroness turned her attention to her. “I want you and Melissa to go to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur and check the source of the water there. The Great Tank drains off into the lake under the ice and from there it trickles down through springs and the Silversong River throughout the Valedale, Firgove, and Mistfall areas. Dress warmly.”
“What about Firfall?” Lily asked.
“What about Firfall?” the Baroness voice turned tart.
“They’ve been cut off through an avalanche of rocks and brambles,” Lily said.
The Baroness closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. “And what were the rangers going to do, shovel them out?” She asked, voice vicious. “Well, I guess we’re borrowing the bulldozer again. Though we might need the excavators as well and several skips from Jorvik City. Aaron, get the permits and papers ready to clear the road to Firfall. Hire some skips. Lily, you managed to get G.E.D. to bend last time.”
“Cookies and shillings,” Lily said.
“Have Harold bake them a month’s worth of cookies and I’ll pay them. We can get to it as soon as the papers and permits are ready.”
“I’ll get that started today, mother,” Aaron said quickly.
“It’s probably former Councilman Skoll who didn’t say anything. He was working with G.E.D. to get money to the town. Maybe he thought he could get them to clear the road for him.” Lily explained. “I don’t know if Rania’s mother knows about it yet. She’s got a large mess to sort out with the town as it is. They really need a ferry.”
“Aaron, add that to the list.”
“New Hillcrest needs a ferry,” Tyra murmured.
“That’s up to Baron Winterwell,” the Baroness shook her head. “Now, who is the new leader of Dundull?”
“Sigry Varanger,” Linda said. “Rania Varanger is her daughter.”
“Good woman. I like her,” the Baroness nodded. “We all know what we need to be doing,” she said and applied to her food.
They all finished breakfast and scattered to do chores and take up their posts at their jobs. Aaron was muttering about getting back to Jorvik City right away. Anastasia had designers to check on in order for all the other girls to have their own new outfits.
Linn came back to the stable, riding fast. “Lily! Linda! Judy! Someone’s spray painted rude messages on the riding hall, and there’s trash all over, and egg on the windows!”
“What?” Linda gaped at her.
They mounted their horses and rode down to the stables to assess the damage.
“Who would do this?” Linn waved her arms. “We worked so hard to clean it.”
“It’s a good thing that marble is protected.” Linda sucked her cheeks in.
“We’ll get it cleaned up,” Lily promised Linda.
“You shouldn’t have to do stuff like this. Take pictures. Document everything before you clean it.” Linda said. “And I’m not unlocking it until it’s clean.”
“It’s lucky you locked it then.”
Linda shook her head. “Not luck, precaution. I don’t want people to sneak in the arena at night to try the course and hurt themselves.”
They went back to the stable for cleaning supplies and returned.
Sabine stood outside the door with a nasty smile on her face, but she was also checking her watch. “What’s the hold up? The arena should be open by now.” Her timer stood behind her wringing her hands.
“If you used your eyes, you’d see why it isn’t open yet,” Lily told her. “The Arena will be open once it’s ready.”
“If you want it open sooner, you can help,” Linn smirked. “There are plenty of supplies.”
Sabine glared at them and marched off with her horse.
Linn shuddered. “Her and her horse give me the creeps.”
“Then why did you time for her so long?”
“My job?”
Lily shrugged. Point.
All the girls hurried up their chores to help out as soon as possible as they had to scrub off paint and eggs, and pick up trash.
By the time they were done, the contractors had arrived and were locking together molds to make the floor of the pavilion. It was a kit so it should go up fairly quickly once they had the floor poured and they could set the walls onto it.
They saw what the Baroness meant by a big pipe. They had a big pipe it looked like that they were going to use to roll across the top of the molds to make the floor level.
But it looked like the contractors were digging some of the dirt out. Bjorn and Agnetha were taking it away in wheelbarrows. They knew better than to ask.
Lily texted Melissa about seeing the Baroness.
Melissa texted back she’d be down right away.
Lily headed back up to the Manor as Agnetha drafted a couple of the girls to help them shift the dirt.
Melissa had a new outfit on with a stylized charging bull in green and deep maroon.
“Nice,” Lily said.
“Anastasia came through. I’m so happy not to be wearing druid symbols anymore. Elizabeth kept giving us the stink eye.” Melissa rubbed her hands on her breeches.
The Baroness was in her office. “Someone vandalized my arena,” was the first thing out of her mouth.
Lily passed her phone over with the pictures.
“Send these to Aaron,” the Baroness said after she looked through them. “If we can catch them, we’ll press charges.”
Lily took her phone back and did just that. Poor Aaron was going to have a busy day.
“Tell me what you have,” the Baroness ordered Melissa.
Melissa got out her own phone. “We’ve taken as many pictures as we could. One of my members is an amateur photographer. So, we rented a zoom lens to take pictures of what they’re doing above the mountains. We can’t see much since they’ve penetrated the mountain now. There’s one way in and one way out. The path curls around the mountain from the lake to over the village. Both waterfalls are being affected. But they’ve posted no bills. We think there isn’t any more than three or four of them.”
The Baroness looked through it. “Can you send these to my son? We can see what we can do about trespassing and not having the proper permits.”
Melissa took her phone back and Lily showed her Aaron’s information. Lily sent him an email to expect Melissa’s email.
“Has Elizabeth been giving you any trouble?”
“Not Elizabeth.”
“Someone is?”
“Rhiannon has gone through our horses and insists that several of them are Starbreeds. We paid for those horses fairly. We have papers,” Melissa turned red in anger. “We aren’t giving them up.”
“Nor should you,” the Baroness said. “The druids have long overstepped in trying to acquire what they call starbreeds. Whether or not Starbreeds exist is none of my concern. My concern is the welfare of the horses that are under my care and that I sell. And I don’t know what the druids do with my horses, thus I refuse to sell to them.” In her mind, it was as simple as that.
“Baroness Silverglade,” Lily said it tentatively. “You, don’t seem to have a good relationship with the Keepers of Aideen.”
“I have my faults. One of them is the firm belief that the Keepers of Aideen do very little for Jorvik and instead lure young women in with false promises of sisterhood and then refuse to impart anything useful to them before putting them into danger.” The Baroness laced her fingers together and appraised them. “Keeping their secrets hasn’t rid Jorvik of John Sands and his like. Have they ever won against them? Or are we in an eternal stalemate.”
Lily inhaled sharply.
The Baroness changed the subject. “As I told Lily earlier, I would like the two of you to go to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur. Dress warmly and do whatever you need to do to get into it. Linda may have some information for you about it.”
Lily stood. “Then we better get going so we can return quickly.”
Melissa stood as well. “Thank you, Baroness Silverglade.”
They left her and went to the library.
“Anything we should know about the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur?”
Linda chewed her lip and gestured for them to sit. “The Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur is an ecological anomaly. It’s believed that is where a meteor crashed and hit Jorvik before Aideen came. The meteor’s magical and scientific properties such as having its own magnetic field, have created an area of eternal winter. The meteor crater originally completely filled with water. The water drained out and created an ice cap over it. Researchers were able to explore under the ice cap until it collapsed in 1912. No one has been there since.”
“So, dress warm? Have lots of rope?”
“Your horses might not move as fast in the Valley. There are references to the pack animals being slow until they brought in the Icelandic Horses. Those horses got left behind when they left and that’s why there is most likely a herd of them there today. Assuming they survived.”
“Take a shovel,” Melissa said.
“Sunglasses,” Lily murmured.
“The notes say there was an elevator down into the crater. I have no idea if it works or not.”
“After a hundred years of abandonment?” Lily raised her brows. “There is this thing called entropy.”
Linda smiled. “I don’t know, thus, I say so.”
“All right. We’ll check that first.” Lily said. “Good thing, Anastasia included a winter coat in all of this. And New Hillcrest had mittens.”
The two agreed to meet at the base of the mountain in Valedale with supplies. Not sure how cold, cold, really was, Lily grabbed a purple sweater she’d bought and put it in her saddlebag along with her winter coat. There wasn’t any reason not to layer. She put on wool pants instead of cotton and tugged on the winter boots.
She raided the tack room for a shovel and a bunch of rope. Then asked Antonia for food. She didn’t know how long she was going to be gone. How big was this area anyways?
Satisfied she was as ready as she was going to be, Lily put on a beanie and took the transport to Valedale.
Melissa waited on her horse at the base of the mountain as agreed, also wearing warm clothes on the bottom. She and Elizabeth were exchanging glares. Lily inserted herself between them.
They urged their horses up the mountain towards the snow covered pass. At the top, they were able to look over across the waterfall and see Dark Core’s camp. Black smoke streamed out of the machines as green water flowed out of their cave and into the waterfall.
“What a mess,” Lily murmured.
Wind hit the snow and them making them shiver.
They pulled on sweaters and shrugged into winter coats buttoning them up and tugged on mittens.
“The pass must have opened recently. I’ve been checking it since we got here,” Melissa said. “We sent some lemmings up this way.”
“Can anything really live there if it’s been covered in snow?” Lily asked.
“I hope we don’t find a pile of horse bones,” Melissa whispered. “That’d be sad.”
“We might find horse bones and living horses,” Lily said and urged her horse forward.
Her stallion’s nostrils flared in distaste but he went.
The pass turned and opened out to a cliff on the edge of the mountain. Right in front of them was a huge wooden structure with a snow covered wooden walkway; the elevator.
They walked up the ramp and got off to look at the elevator. There weren’t any boxes, only thick chains hanging down. Lily knelt by the edge and looked down.
“Oh, that makes me dizzy, Lily. Stop.” Melissa groaned.
Lily took several pictures using the zoom function on her phone. “The cars are both down there, but I don’t see any of the mechanics up top, do you?”
Melissa looked around. “Not at all.”
“So, the controls are down there,” Lily backed up and stood.
Leading the horses, they searched the cliff area.
Melissa pointed. “That could be a way down.” She said gesturing at the cliffs.
“But I’m not going to call it a way back up, and I’m not going down unless we can get out,” Lily bit her lip. She pulled out her phone and sent a president wide group text. They needed a mechanic.
FOR THE ACCOMPANYING IMAGES PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE MY WATERMARK AND CONTACT INFORMATION. THANK YOU. I get it. Some of you might get excited and want to see this stuff in the game, especially the clothes, tack, and pets. However, the only way I want to see this in the game is if I get paid for it. If I see it in the game and I’m not paid for it, there will be hell to pay. You think I’m salty. I’d be angry. Personally, I’m not going to send this info to SSO. If you do, leave my contact information there! Don’t give them any excuses to steal.
Now, I’ll know you haven’t read this note if you leave me comments about how ‘salty’ I am about the game and if I hate it so much I should do something else. I am doing something else. It’s called Mystic Riders MMORPG Project. Mystic Riders however is a very baby phase game. You can check out our plans on the game dev blog. (Skills, Factions, Professions, Crafting, Mini-Games, 25+ horse breeds!) If you know anyone who would be interested and has money or contacts about game making, direct them to the blog.
