So my first ever book post is this. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. A beautiful book by Jonh Green .

This book is about Hazel and Augustus (Gus) both of which suffered with cancer and how both of them first met at a cancer support group and how they started to become friends and then later lovers, and also doing stuff like throwing eggs at Issac's (Gus's best friend) ex girlfriend who broke up with him because of him losing his eyesight. Then going to Paris to meet the author of the book which ended with a half sentence. Sharing some romantic moments there. Then getting pissed at the author for not completing his book even though he told (via email) that if they had come to Paris he would tell them the end of the book. Then going home and finding out Gus is going to die soon. And then he decided to attend his own funeral which he invited Issac and hazel too. Both of them read a beautiful speech dedicated to Gus and expressed how much they loved him.

For all the Indian peeps reading this if you have seen the bollywood movie DIL BECHARA which is very close to everyone's hearts because of the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. And his brilliant performance in it. Fun fact the movie is based on this book .

This book is such a lovely book because it touches all the emotions, comedy, romance, sadness, everything. For me this book is definitely a 10/10.

This is a translation of the 1965 Hindi song with Lata Mangeshkar singing. The song expresses profound sadness on the impending partition, which is perhaps final. The Hindi expression “ho na ho” implies that it may or may not happen in future. In Hinduism, death is the parting for this life. The parting, although expresses separation of two lovers in the movie, can also mean death in the Indian context.

Lag jaa gale ke phir yeh haseen raath ho na ho.

Dil Bechara - Tumultuous Thoughts after Watching the Film

It's always a bit discomforting and heart-rending to watch a film that features a deceased star because we tend to dig more into the death and when the person dies in the film, we tend to associate biographical connotations. We have seen that happening with legends like Guru Dutt and more so when his last incomplete movie was titled "Bahaarein Phir Bhi Aayengi..." or "The Show Must Go On."

What's different in the case of "Dil Bechara" is that we make biographical connotations, not because of the character's death in the film but the way he lives. 

Emanuel Rajkumar Junior, the Bollywood counterpart of The Fault In Our Stars' Augustus Waters is a very similar character, but with more energy, more charm, and more life - Just the way Sushant Singh Rajput was, and we feel that throughout the runtime. 

As the film progresses, the character becomes more special to us. We grow affectionate towards him. There is a sense of attachment that we feel with the character - his mannerism, his way of smiling, his dry humor, his perpetually funny demeanor, and his irritating and interminable laugh on his own jokes - everything becomes a part of our journey of viewing this film, and we tend to accept him the way he is - just like his lover Kizie does. Inevitably, we too fall in love with him for his many qualities. 

Over the course of around 1 hour and 40 minutes, we get to know him more and find him a selflessly loving person and a great human being - some qualities that were associated with the star after his shocking demise by suicide. 

Talking of suicide, ironically, the character, Manny from "Dil Bechara" is quite opposite to anyone who can have thoughts of suicide. On the contrary, he is someone who wants to live forever and cherish life. He wants more of himself. 

In a scene, we see him going to the cinema hall all alone to watch a Rajni film despite being at the danger of collapsing in the theatre. He calls Kizie - his girlfriend to come and pick him up as his condition deteriorates. When asked why did he take such a risky step to come and watch a film despite his deteriorating condition; he would say, he wanted to do something for himself without having to need the help from others, and then we see him breaking down in an agonizing sob, which just leaves us in tears - an indelible moment in the film which portrays Sushant's impeccable forte as an actor, and we so wish it was acknowledged by people before his demise, but let's just say that his art would remain immortal. 

The word immortality reminds me of "The Fault in Our Stars" in which the character, Augustus Waters, is asked about his biggest fear to which he replies "Oblivion", and this particular word that comes from the different world of cinema that Hollywood is has a biographical effect to Sushant. 

To a star, the biggest fear has to be the fear of oblivion. More importantly, not gaining immortality. Sushant has to be a star who saw success up close and also a downfall which was just way behind the curtains that nobody would notice. After 7 successful years in Bollywood preceded by a massively impressive stint on the small screen, the fear of oblivion can be dreary and consuming. The feeling can engulf the artist in clinical depression. It can break the artist from inside. It can lead to a complete mental breakdown. It can entrap the artist in an insurmountable dungeon of despair. It can make the artist embark on the journey of self-destruction disguised as a psychological reflex to the foreboding downfall. 

Regardless of what made him take such a drastic step, how I wish mental health didn't impact him to that extent. 

How I wish he lived more.

How I wish we could see more of him. 

How I wish he could live more to fulfill his dreams and aspirations, which would continue to inspire us. 

How I wish he could be the reason for more smiles. 

How I wish he could be the reason of happiness to his family forever just the way he is to Kizie in the film. 

How I wish he could live more and bring more life to people through his lively personality and deadly performances.

Kriti Sanon (born 27 July 1990) is a Bollywood Diva, an Indian actress who appears predominantly in Hindi films. She pursued an engineering degree from the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, after which she briefly worked as a model. Q. What’s the real Kriti Sanon like?

Kriti- Oh. Well (pause) I’m a simple girl from a middle-class background. I’m not someone who fakes it. You won’t hear me talking in a fake accent or being all hoity toity. The toughest thing is to fake it throughout the day, every day. I like being real and talking to people who’re real. I’m sensitive but not too emotional. I can’t judge people correctly. Effort and gestures matter more than materialistic things. I love spending time with my people and close friends at home rather than party and do small talk. I enjoy a good conversation with good people.

Hi. Kriti, do tell us about your background before everyone came to know you as a filmstar ?

Kriti- I am originally from Delhi, now settled in Mumbai. My dad, Mr. Rahul Sanon, is a Chartered Accountant and mom Mrs. Geeta Sanon, is a professor at the University of Delhi. We are Punjabi. Everybody knows that I have a younger sister Nupur, who lives with me here. I schooled from Delhi Public School, RK Puram and later secured Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, Noida

Q. Do tell us about your association with the Film industry till now?

Kriti — I made my acting debut in 2014 with Sukumar’s Telugu film 1: Nenokkadine, a psychological thriller, in which I played the role of Sameera, a journalist who is also the love interest of Mahesh Babu’s character. Later that year, I got a chance to make my Hindi film debut, opposite Tiger Shroff, in Sabbir Khan’s action romance Heropanti. It emerged as a commercial success. Later I won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for this film.

Then I did a Telugu film release with Sudheer Varma’s Dohchay, a crime film co-starring Naga Chaitanya followed by Rohit Shetty’s action-comedy Dilwale, in which I starred alongside Varun Dhawan, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

Then I starred alongside Sushant Singh Rajput in Dinesh Vijan’s directorial debut Raabta, which tells the story of star-crossed lovers who are reincarnated. My next release, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s romantic comedy Bareilly Ki Barfi, was a super hit. Last year I starred opposite Kartik Aaryan in Luka Chuppi, a romantic comedy about a couple in a live-in relationship. Commercially, it proved to be a success. My next two releases of the year were the comedies Arjun Patiala and Housefull 4. The latter emerged as a commercial success despite receiving unfavourable reviews. My last film before lockdown happened was Ashutosh Gowariker’s period drama Panipat, based on the Third Battle of Panipat.

Q: Which of your films has benefitted you the most?

Kriti- “Heropanti” was a film that was designed to launch two newcomers — Tiger Shroff and me. It did well. But for someone like me who did not come from a film family, it was “Dilwale” that gave me a huge reach. It was so much fun that it did not feel like work at all, and because it had Shah Rukh (Khan)-sir, Kajol ma’am, Varun Dhawan and Rohit (Shetty)-sir as Director, my audience reach increased hugely. Today, children still love my songs in the film and come and show me my steps.

Q: How do you choose a script now?

Kriti: I have always been instinctive about scripts. I like what the aam janta (masses) would, and I ask myself if I would want to watch this film. We give at least three months to a film, so I should enjoy working on it and wake up with excitement every day. My character comes next, and it is not about how different my character is, but about how important it is for the film.

Q: How would you compare your heroes till now?

Kriti: All are very hardworking and great actors. Tiger and I both have a hunger for improving and Tiger is very disciplined, whether at work or about his workouts. Varun is spontaneous, and always wants to do better until he gets it right. Sushant is very methodical and thus very inspiring. And Akshay sir is by far the best. He is a seasoned actor.

Q. There are reports of you doing a film based on surrogacy ?

Yes, it’s an exciting project with Maddock Films, yet untitled. It’s an entertaining story with its heart in the right place. It’s going to be directed by my Luka Chuppi director, Laxman Utekar. I share a great bond with him. It was an idea initially, which has shaped into a script, better than I expected. Laxman sir has the knack of presenting an emotional subject in an entertaining manner. This will be the first film, which will ride on my shoulders as the protagonist is a girl. It’s challenging. I’m nervous about it. Shooting will start later this year, once this Covid 19 issue gets over.

Q. You still model too and endorse brands?

Kriti- Yes, of course. I endorse for several brands and products. These include Titan Watches’ Raga Collection, Parachute, UrbanClap, among others. I also promote my

own clothing line, labelled ‘Ms. Taken’.

Q: Your sister is also exploring singing and acting now.

Kriti: Yes, she was always passionate about singing, and has taken three or four years of classical training. I told her to keep all doors open.

Q: Unlike most young actresses of today, you have never sung in a film?

Kriti: Yeah (Laughs)That is because I am not trained. I would like to be first trained, and then sing

Q. Your biggest inspiration?

Kriti- My Mom and Dad.

Q. What’s next then?

Kriti- There’s one script which I have said yes to, which I would only want the producers to announce. It’s a thriller. There are two other scripts that I have liked. There are other things to be put together — as to how and when it happens — which needs to be figured out. So it’s all up in the air for now.

When did you sign your first autograph?

Kriti- My first autograph (pause and thinks). Thats an interesting question. I think while shooting my first film Heropanti..on the sets.

How do The Audience Prefer to Watch a Film ? – OTT vs Cinema Theatres

The debate regarding the direct-to-digital release has witnessed a massive rift in the Hindi film industry.

The debate on whether the cinema halls will lose its charm or who will win the war? OTT v/s Cinema Theatres.

What is the opinion of the audience in general? how would they prefer to watch a film?

Whether like always, first day first show in the theatres or first day first show in the comforts of one’s home?

With cinemas shutting down due to the Covid-19 the demand for OTT platform has risen with more and more producers opting to release their films on digital platform that has more viewership then ever before.  They are looking at skipping the traditional routes hence the debate is over direct-to-digital releases.

Last week the much awaited film ‘ Gulabo Sitabo’ by one of the prominent directors, Shoojit Sircar, Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushman Khurana and  Shakuntala Devi by Anu Menor  were released on the Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon went on to acquire titles of regional films like Jyotika starrer Ponmangal Vandhar along with Four other digital premiers.  The OTT platform which is already popular for many years is speculating several other film releases, including that of Akshay Kumar’ s Laxmmi Bomb, Karan Johar’s Gunjan Saxena-  The Kargil Girl which are in the advance stages of discussion with the digital deals.

The new trend setter of releasing films on OTT has drawn criticism from the theatre owners And film exhibitors across India. While multiplex like INOX chain have spoken of retributive measures in their Statement, PVR has urged producers to hold on to their film releases until theatres are opened after the Corona outbreak is cleared.

Earlier the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association had expressed their disappointment over their huge investments in infrastructure where in CEO Mohan Umrotkar, of Carnival cinemas had created employment for 2 lakh people over 450 operational screens across India. In addition to this, revenue the film exhibition sector also creates employment for over 2 lakh people. If the trend of releasing films on OTT platforms continues, there will be a cause of concern according to Mohan.

The Indian Box Office has generally generated a yearly revenue of Rs.10 to 15,000 crores. With the theatres remaining shut indefinitely, lot of business is lost and the situation gets no help from any Potential earners.

With ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ and ‘Shakuntala Devi’ going live on OTT there is an additional loss of Rs. 100 to 125 Crores. However, CEO Mohan believes that this situation is temporary in an extra ordinary circumstances due to unforeseen pandemic that has taken its toll on the film industry as well as the cinemas. He is confident that once the lockdown is lifted and the normalcy is restored, the industry will be back again with them.

Bollywood has predominantly maintained the eight-week window between the theatrical and the digital Releases and if a film is sold to the OTT one can do nothing about it to stop it in the given situation, says Manoj Desai, executive director of G7 Multiplex, and Maratha Mandir Cinema in Mumbai.

At present we are not sure when the cinemas will open and what measures will be taken. In the given Circumstances, the theatre owners can only wait for the crises to subside to start thinking ahead with their new plans.

While acknowledging the plight of producers, Manoj Desai says there can be no comparison with the theatrical experience which is irreplaceable. The films being telecasted on OTT were actually made for theatrical view like Sooryavanshi which won’t go for the digital release and will wait for the cinemas to Resume.

Last month the Hindi films Bamfaad and Ateet were released on ZEE5 and the the platform premiered, Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s long delayed comedy , Ghoomketu  on May 22nd, 2020.

Since its inception, the goal is to entertain the audience says Aparna Acharekar, the programming Head of ‘ Be Calm Be Entertained’ Initiative.   In addition, they also acquired the rights towards the Blockbuster films across languages and diverse topics.   The contents are however free and on premium.

The digital release of feature films is not a new concept. It always existed when the OTT platforms came to light. According to the 2020 FICCI-EY report around 50 low budget films were released directly on the OTT platforms across India in 2019 alone.  Streaming subscriptions the advent of the OTT began as it saw small films were less saleable names while OTT also guaranteed a wider audience for these small filmmakers. It also meant they could save on the prints and advertising costs.  As a theatrical release is quite expensive affair with the major content acquisition lies with the film distribution company.

While the trend has helped the cinema to survive, it has also created implications for the larger Businesses such as producing a film or for the theatre owners and affecting big businesses.

With people banned from going to cinemas and cinemas all shut across most parts of India, the reopening of the theatres is indefinite. Though Mohan Desai is expecting the cinema business to resume this July with a partial sitting capacity in the theatres, after sanitization, wearing protective masks, it is not clear if the audience would like to take a risk or the cinema goers are now used to being cooped up at home and watch a film on the OTT in the comforts of their home for health and safety reasons. The ongoing Covid-19 lockdown has created its impact in almost all sectors and all businesses across the World. however, it is believed that the most hit industry is the film industry and television industry. As several producers of films have decided to release their films on OTT Platforms as they are not Expecting the theatres to open anytime soon.  Hence the OTT vs theatres debate continues to the Unforeseen future.

The PVR cinemas a few days back made a grand announcement that through a video and their messaging, that their theatres are all gearing up for the movie lovers with all the safety measures to invite their clients, the movie lovers with the equipment’s and proper social distancing, sanitizing etc. However the government hasn’t granted permission for the movie theatres to open therefor no movie releases are expected in the near future in the theatres.

Sometimes a film hardly ran in the theatres and did badly at the box office collections. So the OTT platform is one of its kind when the films are on the platform for a long time streaming, trending for the audience. it is better than the pirated videos that people were crazy about and would have a parallel cinema illegally, with the distribution of the pirated videos of the films which were sold at a meagre sum of Rs. 100 per cassette.

Technology has advanced considerably since then and brought about the change and this change is expected to stay for a very long time to come.
