Random assortment of Karate Kid: Legends thoughts:

You guys have no idea how relieved I am that this movie wasn't absolutely garbage

WAS IT PERRECT? Noooo. And honestly, there are plenty of flaws to talk about (big and small), BUT there were a lot more elements I liked than what I expected

First of all: Li Fong (played amazingly by Ben Wong) is a darling. He's dedicated, funny, and a little cutie-pie at that. He's a boy!! A talented boy!!! stricken with grief from the loss of a loved one (his brother), like Daniel and Mr. Han once!! To be honest, I rather he would have divulged that vulnerability to Daniel with Mr. Han (who already knew but I digress) as a way for them all to understand each other and strengthen the theme of finding a way to stand up in face of hardship in life

While it has its bland moments, I found his developing romance with New York native Mia to be cute andkksjf. I like how much personality Mia had in particular, and not just being a spunky object of affection for Li; she's familiar with the city in a way he isn't, so she offers to help Li to be familiarized with living in New York. While the execution is another thing, Mia's role as Li's guide is somewhat able to break her out of the one-dimesional Love Interest mold

Victor wasn't a secret evil bad like I thought he was (iykyk). In fact, he's a pretty cool guy. I liked how he and Li's role subverts the typical "mentor and apprentice" dynamic. also NEW JERSEY MENTION 💯💯💯💯💯💯

Alan's role is a little bit suffocated by Victor as The Best Friend™ because of Victor, buuut he'd alright lmao. Love that he has pigeons. He kind of reminds me of Demetri in a way adhkakfdf. He should have been gayer with Li

HEYYYYY JOHNNY WHAT THE FUCK YOU DOING HERE IN THE END MAN?? Also why were you slinking around Daniel alone at Mr. Miyagi's house? 🤨

Probably one of the best parts of the movie is the fighting coreography. It's energetic and dynamic, with lots of usage of the environment to help or hurt characters, alongside lots of humor — you could definitely tell there was looots of inspiration from old Jackie Chan films. Ben Wong is ESPECIALLY eating those moves up OH MY GOD

THE FUCKING GRAPHICS? THE DOODLES? CALL ME EASY BUT OHHHH MY GOD. THAT BUMPED MY SCORE UP BY ONE JUST FOR THAT. THE ILLUSTRATIONS ESPECIALLY IN THE BEGINNING TO THE STORY OF HOW MIYAGI-DO KARATE WAS BORN... AUGH..

Okay onto my criticisms (takes out a big list)

First of all: JESUS CHRIST THE MOVIE WAS RUSHED TO HELL

Almost every scene felt like it had NOOO time to transition onto the next, or even have time to give characters a pause from within a scene!! The editing worked during montages, as they're supposed to go fast, and in the beginning to represented how Li's new life is disorienting (even though I didn't quite like it), but otherwise this flaw pertains throughout the WHOOOOOLE movie in a way that made it feel rushed and even more formulaic than it already was — almsot like it's hitting marks for certain things to happen before it quickly changes for the next thing that needs to happen. I don't know if the scenes were shot that way, or if the scenes were written to be that unnatural, but it was so jarring. The movie definitely could have used for at LEAST 10 more minutes, if not 30, to have let things breathe and feel more natural

The movie should not have skipped so much of the time when Li was training. YES, I KNOW LI WAS ALREADY EXCELLING AT KUNG FU, but training in The Karate Kid was always more than just the martial arts!! In The Karate Kid, it was how Daniel, learned, lived, and understood the Miyagi-Do teaching, and how he bonded with Mr. Miyagi. Skipping Li's chance to do either through showing him training was a huge lost (this also relates to my next point)

The movie also did not explore or elaborate on the philosophical side of Miyagi-Do karate for Li to learn as much as I had hoped to have seen. A crucial part of the original movie was never really the karate itself, but the wisdom behind it. I would say the same thing for kung-fu, however:

Li already knew kung-fu. There'd be no point for him to learn it again

The point of Daniel LaRusso coming to help was so Li could learn Miyagi-Do karate — including the philosophy, not just the fighting techniques

This is THE KARATE KID franchise, more centered on THE MIYAGIVERSE. The Miyagi-do karate philosophy is the CORE of the franchise

Because of this, it felt a little... cheap for Li to have learned Miyagi-Do karate so fast, but without having been shown him having a deeper connection to it than simply a couple more moves in his repertoire

While the Victor plot was enjoyable, it felt like it was straining to connect to the latter half of the movie, when Li was training for the 5 Boroughs Tournament, and it almost felt it was fighting for dominance in front of the camera. Because once Victor was hospitalized, that plotline basically? Disappeared? It was heavily implied Li's motivation to win the tournament was so the prize money could help out Victor's money issues (and hospital bills 💀), but there was an overall lack of cohesion. Which I think there couldn't have been!! If Victor and Li have had a conversation about students being as good as their teachers (and how Li had to be a better student so he could be a better teacher for Victor) — OR EVEN VICTOR AND DANIEL, WHO'S BEEN BOTH STUDENT AND TEACHER — the Victor plot would have felt a lot more satisfying to me

While I understand seeing most of the movie is through Li's eyes has its own merits, this left a lot of characters — namely Mia, Conor, and Alan — to lack a lot of depth because it wasn't directly tied to what he saw or experienced. This is especially troubling for the love interest and the main rival characters. In the case of Mia, the scene where she confesses she kept making bad decisions (coming back to Conor) because it's the easy choice, until she decided it was enough because she finally found somebody new (Li), was one of the more egregiously bland and underwhelming writing decisions related to this issue. It probably would have been more intriguing/touching if we had SEEN this flaw to this effect and its consequences, but we hadn't. So this leaves a lot of shallow writing decisions that are much less interesting

I'm going to talk about Conor Day as a single point here. Like I said, he lacks a lot of depth. And while Johnny in the og film script-wise doesn't contain the deepest of nuances, William Zabka's performance undeniably elevates such a simple, bully character into one with deep flaws but an integrally honorable core that's ultimately threatened by a domineering, toxic influence. I sadly could not say the same for Conor. It's IMPLIED SURE, but he seems a lot less nonplussed (even revelling) about playing unfair and pushing/violating how much he could break the rules and hurt people. Does he even get more than 10 lines of dialogue. Conor lacks a certain threatening presence in the film that you could almost forget he exists lmao. And sure, he's an intimidating jerk, but he really doesn't play much of a memorable role outside of the direct, in-universe happenings (and even then). I would almost say his fucking mob boss mentor (?) O'Shea does, but fucks off a lot to do whatever too. I guess, instead of a Johnny-esque character, Conor Day was a Silver-esque character. I should have known by his black gi, ponytail, and earrings. He should have been gayer with Li

Maybe I missed this, but I'm disappointed that there wasn't more of a reason given for Daniel to travel all the way to New York and help Li learn Miyagi-Do Karate besides just him being nice and prooobably wanting to honor Mr. Miyagi? and instead sort of using humor to Make Daniel go to New York? Like, maybe I would have liked a scene of Daniel looking at Mr. Miyagi's portrait and realizing what he would have wanted him to do, but it (once again) felt rushed for the sake of getting to the next part (Daniel in New York)

It also felt very steamlined of how Daniel and Mr. Han were at first butting heads then to working together, without much effort from either of them to overcome their differences in teaching. I suppose their pep talk to Li with the hachimaki, and then them fighting together as a team was cool, but it felt undeserving (and unecessary in the case of the latter lmao). In my opinion, I would have loooved to see Daniel and Mr. Han have a friendly, if competitive, spar to see who could beat the other, with neither Daniel nor Mr. Han able to win more points against the other, until they're in synch and almost dancing instead of sparring in the end — accidentally demonstrating to Li the synergy of karate and kung-fu together (Li's martial arts dads...)

I'm also saddened there was only a vague reference to Dre Parker, especially when Mr. Han is a TOOOOTALLY different character from The Karate Kid (2010) because of Dre's influence in his life

ANYWAY, I could try to analyze this movie in relation to The Karate Kid's original themes of masculinity, the American Identity, the legacy of men onto boys, etc. But I just watched the movie once and I'm tired

Honestly, I was afraid they'd make Victor and Dr. Fong (apparently, that's the only name we get of Li's mom. Okay) get together, so WHEWWWW on that

I kept telling myself that I wasn't going to vid them but, let's face it, I think we all know I'm totally going to vid them, right? 🤷‍♀️😂😉

I share my angst because I care, friends. Man, do I hope we're going to see Tali soon to at least make all of this agony worth it! I do want to make clear that I totally do love Tali and her romance with Shepard; I just wish she had showed up about 10 hours ago so I could've locked in her romance in ME3 and thus nobody else would be trying to win Shep's heart in this playthrough, lol!

8a ends with much tension, so much unsaid, but they're rescued hurray

8b opens with buck and eddie barely able to look at each other, tension in the firehouse, ep is mostly hen and chim's pov, hen and chim so concerned, bobby talks to buck and then eddie in his office, hen and chim eavesdrop and hear bobby talking about putting one of them on b-shift, hen and chim each take one (hen with eddie and chim with buck) and we have a split scene of them trying to get to the bottom of this/talk some sense into them for the good of the team, buck and eddie both promise they'll work on it but things are just different now

episode ends with buck and eddie leaving the station, so awkward, and the instant they're alone they sorta jump at each other laughing hands tangling together because it's buddie secret relationship era

later in 8b when hen and chim find out bobby just shrugs 'they had to file paperwork with hr i knew the whole time'

Was contemplating the whole ‘Tommy has no friends except Alfie’ thing/thought (it’s my own internal running joke too) but it can't really be true?

Tommy appears to have this huge social network, groups of people he’s still in touch with from the war, including internationally, and including in the officer class; these supposed very reliable contacts in Ireland which I can only assume ties back to the family connections to Ireland and maybe some visit across in his past; the huge respect (and edge of fear) network in Small Heath extending broader into Birmingham; seemingly a very *useful* social-climbing networking he's developed to be able to get the mayor and various politicians to the Grace Shelby charity opening in S3, a society networking which he maintains and builds upon all the way through to Tommy being able to invite actual upper crust society to a ballet at his house (and people attend!)

I mean, there's a level of reserve (rank/war respect) or transactional basis (professional tit for tat society networks), but he also had more friend style connections with say Barney, Freddie (even if it’s soured by the time we see it) and Danny (again, changed by Danny’s own PTSD into that Sergeant-Major thing, but lots of hints it wasn't always like that).

I’ve imagined Tommy puts a significant effort into his social (and society) networking as he does into his business - staying in touch, staying useful, even to the point of using Arthur (or let's imagine his secretaries, his ministerial aides, Polly; picking the right 'hand' who can maintain that relationship for him) to ensure letters and communications keep happening so people remain aware of him, and he stays alive in people’s minds at any possible level of class. He'd have to be maintaining that network like a garden.

The party for Lizzie also didn’t seem like a first time thing for them so I also imagine he hosts quite a lot of social affairs to remain current and connected, which becomes vitally imperative in a different way as a politician compared to a businessman.

But I think that default inner joke, Tommy has no friends and is isolated, is sometimes the claustrophobia of the actual seasons/scenes we see, which are so zoomed into him, into the family, into the worst, that I sometimes double think myself. Just...there’s no way he’s as successful as he is without pouring buckets of effort into society. Admittedly, maybe hardly any of these networking connections are deep connections in the odd way Alfie became one, or Ben Younger could have been one, but Tommy would be talking and meeting and greeting and hosting and writing letters allllllll the time

everywhere i go is partially based on everywhere by niall horan and the requests ive gotten for childhood friends with lando. lando off gallivanting across the world while reader is at home deeply in love with him but little does she know lando thinks about her allllllll the time but doesn’t think he’s right for her. a bit bittersweet, i haven’t decided on an ending yet😶

i just wanted to say i love how you write the characters in your dn fics. do you have any advice for keeping the characters ic/getting their personalities right? or do you have a specific approach?

ack! I forgot this was in my inbox. You know, I worry about this allllllll the time. Especially because it seems to be a big trend in this fandom to comment publicly on what everyone gets wrong about characters – a trend that i've also particpated in. but ultimately, you just have to stay true to how YOU view the characters. consistency is what makes characterization: when characters act in ways that stay true to how they've portrayed themselves throughout the fic. you'll know when an action feels off, and when that feeling hits, don't ignore it. lean in and try to find a way to rewrite the scene so the character's actions read as genuine – or as genuine as anyone in Death Note can read, lol.

i wish i had better advice, but this is fanfiction. i regret every time i've gotten on my high horse about characterization because in the end, its all playing with dolls. whatever gets my boys to smash together the way I want is how i'm gonna write them.

it's christmas so we'll stop (trc/pynch, 6.9k words, oneshot) -- i try to do holiday focused fics every year and this is the most recent one. i just really, really wanted adam and ronan to get stuck on a ski-lift together. another super fun one to write. probably veers into the realm of cheesiness but...i am kind of cheesy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Better In The Dark (trc/pynch, 2.6k words, oneshot) -- i wrote this one allllllll the way back in 2017, and it features adam sleeping over at monmouth and hearing/witnessing gansey leaving in the middle of the night to see blue, and then he has a conversation with ronan about it. every so often i forget about this one and i'm blown away by how much i love it when i reread it. writing pre-relationship pynch and feeling like you've got it right is SO satisfying.

Ready or Not (aftg/renison, 4.9k words, oneshot) -- i'm much more of an allison/kevin girl these days, but i do still have a soft spot for renison, although if i'm being honest this is more of an allison fic, because i love her. taking place on the day of the fox ladies' graduation as allison contemplates the future, it's just a fic really close to my heart.

Broken Wings (trc/pynch, 874 words, oneshot) -- i don't remember the exact post now but a long time ago maggie tweeted (i think?) something about adam singing broken wings by mr. mister in a deleted trk scene. i couldn't not do something with that. it's silly and cute, which is very on brand for me.

Wonder if that or something similar was an influence on Filoni's directing style.

i feel like i need to add to that concept and kind of ... elaborate. see, despite the fact that he grew up with a loving and supportive family and all that, simeon realizes kind of early on in his life that he's naturally a bit Strange and that it tends to put people off so he begins building a performance of his life remarkably early – because ultimately what he really wants is to be adored, which he never fully admits to himself. he wants to be liked. god forbid, he wants to be loved. but if he can't genuinely be these things, and he does truly believe it's not possible or at least too unlikely to take the risk, then what he can do is control the perceptions of people around him. charm, infuriate, confuse ... he plays people like a musical instrument, in a way, and it's often not nefarious but rather a natural defense mechanism and something he does without thinking. he is not truly himself with almost anybody, often not even his own family, who do see him in his pure form sometimes but whom he still " performs " for, so to speak, more often than not.

the result of this is that you can be friends with him sometimes for years and only come to realize after all that time that you don't ... really know anything substantial about him. nothing deep, nothing of any real substance. he's the friend who will open his doors to people, who will cook a warm meal and listen patiently to your problems, who will give you shelter if you need it, who will take you out for a good time, who is fun and full of life and delightfully charming, who lights up every room he's in – but what do you really know about him, his inner life, who he is? in the case of most people, it's ... nothing. not really. nothing that isn't relatively superficial, nothing that he hasn't specifically chosen to be a fact people are Allowed to know about him. he's a locked vault but people don't recognize it because he curates this image of being open almost to the point of oversharing, when really, it's a game of smoke and mirrors.

he can't shake the feeling that being TRULY open with anybody would come at the price of his true self being only Tolerated instead of actually Loved. simeon's trick is that he appears to be unfailingly open because that endears him to people, but he is so terrified to his very bones of showing anybody who he really is and watching that be rejected out of hand that he is almost constantly performing. even when he loses control of his emotions and throws a fit or starts a scene? there is some part of that that's willful. he's a creature of immense feeling, but dangerously, he keeps a lid on allllllll that feeling which basically makes him the functional equivalent of a human emotional soda can ready to explode at any moment.

Genuinely bamboozled as to why and how allllllll the other OC ships are able to get a happy ending together or leave the show with a good ending for the other half of the ship except upstead. After the main OC account changed their account to stellaride and the promo which seems to include a new clip of them together im just so frustrated that Jesse and Tracy get left with the worst storyline for their show. And it’s all stemming from the show runner who gave some of the best scenes to them yet single-handedly ripped them away. I get it’s a drama but come on there were a million other ways Jesse could have left and the drama could have continued, it is a show revolving a team not just two people but proving my point Jesse and Tracy/ Hailey and Jay being in the viewers but no let’s rip them apart in the most mind boggling out of character way possible for funsies

Totally and completely not fair to Jesse and Tracy and the hard work and effort they put into making their relationship come to life as well as the fans who tune into the show to watch their story unfold.

Sorry for the rant but at this point it is just completely unfair how the so called yacht of PD is being dismantled for no good reason at all. Holding onto Jesse’s trust the process and Tracy’s doll pic wording and her hashtag for dear life because I refuse to believe this is how their story ends

Your frustration is felt, I think many Upstead fans feel the same way. I really wish things had gone down differently and handled very differently. I always say I'd love to have an interview with Gwen, one where real questions could be asked and answered. I'd love to pick apart her and some of the writer's minds on how they made the creative decisions they made and why. I'd also love to hear what J and T have to say about it, but they are too professional and respect the cast and crew too much to probably say anything that would paint it in a negative light (which is completely understandable.)

And this is good timing because we got another photo of mini Halstead and maaaaaan, I am *trusting the process* because Tracy is REALLY getting into it.
