I always found that sweet how a lot of the time in TLG Med would jump to reassure Khadgar or even apologize after snapping at him

And yet in some ways the cruelest thing Medivh said to Khadgar in my opinion was correcting him when he called Karazhan “Our Tower.” And reminding him he was there at his whim and he could send him away at any time.

And he never did apologize for that one and honestly I don’t really blame Med for that per se? It is his tower and Khadgar can’t tell him who is allowed there. What I mean is going by JUST the power dynamic they have as mentor-apprentice, Khadgar is absolutely out of line there

In some ways could have come off quite spoiled and entitled but the thing is I don’t think that was the case at all.

He’s become so comfortable in Karazhan he’d started thinking of it as his home. Then Medivh has in one conversation reminded him it very much was not his home and he could send him away at anytime if he so wished it

He’d finally found someone who cared about him, respected him and treated him as a person. He found a place where he felt he belonged for once in his life and…

No wonder he was so jealous of Garona for a while after that. He’d been reminded that all of it could be taken from him at any moment and here was someone stealing his Master’s attention.

Just thinking about how that jealousy so obviously comes with feeling like he’s not enough and insecurity about his place in Med’s life.

Just very interesting how I think it could very well have went over Med’s head as not that big of a deal too? One of those things he’d be like huh oh yeah I said that? Meanwhile Khadgar is spiraling about it

He could of also been absolutely aware of how harsh it was because Medivh does lash out like that on occasion (especially towards the end of the book as Sargeras gets harder and harder to fight) he can be a little shit we know this

(Don’t really blame him for that given being possessed by the demon lord Sargeras is probably just a teensy bit tiring /s)

Also seen valid and honestly very possibly canon interpretations where he’s also trying to push Khadgar away cuz he knows what’s coming and what Khadgar is going to have to do.

The more attached to him he is the more difficult it will be for Khadgar to do what needs to be done.

What better way to push someone away then hit them right where it hurts?

And yet even then I think those words hurt Khadgar deeper than he’ll ever know :(

Tolkien's handling of race in LotR is bad, and should not be defended, but pointing out that the Jackson LotR films are perhaps even worse on that issue seems to be *really* unpopular with most of the fans. You'd think that a film series from the 2000s should be held to a higher standard than fantasy literature written in the '30s and '40s, but apparently not.

Exactly. Whenever someone (not even me specifically, or my friends—others have pointed this out!) tries to discuss it, people tend to get super defensive and make extremely dubious arguments to defend the racial casting and coding.

And it's like, yes, I have my bias as someone who has a lot of other issues with the films and who has resented their stranglehold on fandom for years. But I see people go on about how the Jackson films' racism was just being true to Tolkien's vision, despite manifestly not being "true to Tolkien's vision" in multiple respects, so a) why should racism be the thing they couldn't change, especially amidst all the other things they did change, and b) they're actually worse than the book in this regard at any rate.

Like, Tolkien's descriptions of dark-skinned heroic characters are entrenched in colorism, imperialism, all kinds of awful assumptions about how the world works even when he's awkwardly trying to push back (I think @elwing had an interesting discussion of how we can see this in the ambivalent representation of Tar-Aldarion, for instance). But literally nothing was preventing the filmmakers from including characters like those and just not retaining the textual descriptions, which would be weird to include in film anyway.

Of course, Tolkien himself was indignant at the idea that Middle-earth is exclusively Northern or English, no matter how many times certain folks repeat the "mythology for England" quote devoid of its original context. So my view is that the book absolutely has a lot of unconsidered or poorly considered racism and racist assumptions, but that this is not incompatible with the films and fandom being still worse and all the more culpable when you consider our RL circumstances.

Hello again. I know I had said I had plans for November, but.... let's just say I had a pretty big thing happen a week after I posted that has resulted in me not talking to a group of people I've known for nearly a decade for the last two months. Apologies for that.

I've had another idea, and this one won't be happening any time soon. I simply want to gauge interest when I get it finished.

As I mentioned before, I rp Wilford on this site. I'm also known for over-complicating things. Put these together, and I've been working on a very long-winded backstory since the summer to fill in the gap between 'William' and 'Wilford'. It's currently just shy of 5,000 words after a lot of brainstorming.

In the video where Mark talks through Motherloving, he made a comment about how Abe had only just woken in this fictional place, whereas it was implied Wilford had been there for years. And.... I decided to try and put a timeline of a sort together. Me being me, it quickly spiralled out of control into something that a bullet-point summary wouldn't easily cover without causing more confusion.

Including William and Wilford themselves, there are six key 'roles' that span this in-between era, amounting in a minimum of seventy years in some shape or form (a chunk of this is sitting in one place at one point in time and watching the world go by without him). These key roles are to over-emphasise negative traits within the Colonel himself - cowardice, unreliable memory, alcohol usage, violence, lack of trust, and eccentricity - while there are implied blurs of other 'roles' in between that have been lost through the ages or didn't exist long enough to warrant noting. There's even a love story at one point, though it is not a fanon ship, and it does not persist to modern day.

These identities also include those that Abe grabbed from his file, and gives one reason as to why files existed to begin with. These main six have been sketched out, so a visual can accompany the different names. There would also be a post to help keep track of who is who and what their significance is.

There would be warnings that cover matters such as blood, violence, alcohol usage, death (murdering, being murdered, and dying through illness), and potentially others one I can't currently think of. I would make sure these are suitably laid out at the start, and nothing immediately triggering would be above a read-more.

Anyway.

I’ve been playing Werewolf for the past couple of years now, with the same character and the same campaign. Yesterday she disintegrated—it’s probably fine—but I couldn’t resist the opportunity to make an in-character “so you’re reading this in the event of my untimely death / disappearance / dismemberment note,” and because I felt like being exceedingly extra (SAD), I recorded it as a voice note. Acting!
