Krone: When doing laundry, different types of personalities come outβ¦I wonder how [Norman] dries clothesβ¦ah~ so gentle, he dries the clothes very neatly~ The style of drying, the spacing between the clothes, it looks beautiful! This way, the wind flows into clothes properly, and the sunlight is shared uniformly. An efficient way of drying clothes. Good job! Gilda: Norman's way of doing laundry is also perfect. Don: A genius is a is a genius no matter what he does, huh? Norman: It's nothing like that! I just like doing laundry. The snowy white clothes being blown by the breeze is a sight I really love. That's why I try to be gentle when hanging the laundry.
(TPN Sound Drama - Sister Krone's Welcome to Grace Field House)
(Chapter 19 | Chapter 34)
I love the choice to have this conversation while they're carrying out their daily chores for the practical pretense of keeping up appearances for Isabella and their younger siblings, but with the sound drama in mind, it's also a way for Norman to occupy his hands and recenter himself, something he probably took a bit of extra solace in every day during those three weeks.
(S1 Episode 6 | S1 Episode 11)
Yet again a tradeoff of losing Demizu's little details for being able to see that billowing come to life onscreen with the close-ups on them to compensate for a single dramatic wideshot, along with the pragmatic purpose of more bluntly foreshadowing the importance of the hangers in the escape and Norman openly musing to himself about Ray's true intentions, but in keeping with the choice to axe the inner monologues, I think it works well.

I have a sad headcanon. The mothers aren't forced to stay after have brought the children to the gate. They can return to the house and let the children with the demons. Isabella make the choice to stay and watch everything until the end because she considers that she must stay until the end, that she can't abandon them at this moment after have took care of them for years. Also a part of her see that as a punishment. She is accomplice of this system, she chooses to live by sacrifing those children. And the most important is that she LOVES them. So she stays until the very end because she feels she deserves to suffer and that she must stay at their side until it's over.
Norman and Emma have seen Isabella spoke with the demons. It's because they are used to see her since it has been 12 years, almost 13, that she is doing that so their discussion seems to show that she is as much cruel than them.
And she seems to be indifferent and cold because 1) no way she show weakness to demons (and that's useless anyway) 2) she is horribly used to it so acting cold is more easy after all those years 3) closing her heart in those moments is the best way to doing that without breaking. 4) we see that she kept the toys of all the kids as precious memories. She could send it in another orphenages and forget about it but no. She kept all of those toys.
So i'm pretty sure that it deeply hurt her to see them die, but she watches it because she feel she deserve to suffer and must see everything because looking away would be even more betraying them.
(Really both the mother and the son are masochists :/)
is this even a headcanon it's canon as far as I'm concerned
There's the little room off to the side where theoretically a Mom can excuse herself to avoid having to witness the gupna ceremony. Maybe they claim they need to grab one last thing or sign some paperwork before the child can be driven off to their new foster home. "It won't take long. Wait in the truck, dear, I promise I'll be back in a minute."
Isabella's a queen at compartmentalizing though, so maybe she views staying until the very end, as she stresses to Emma and Norman in chapter 25/episode 8, as her bi-monthly penance for sustaining her life as long as she can.
Norman and Emma have seen Isabella spoke with the demons. It's because they are used to see her since it has been 12 years, almost 13, that she is doing that so their discussion seems to show that she is as much cruel than them.
I like to think after childbirth Isabella was granted the mercy of having some time to recuperate instead of immediately being thrust into being a Mom so it's less than twelve years (as general practice and because of her amazing potential becoming the youngest Mom in Grace Field's known history, you'd think a few months to avoid any potential health risks and finalizing her transition to plant #3 would be a worthwhile cost for headquarters), and because I'm a masochist, I like to headcanon that Ray, Norman, and Emma were the first children raised solely by her and not overlapping with the previous Mom of plant #3 (excluding the child who arrived between Norman and Emma who was unfortunately shipped out at some point before turning eleven), so I see her arriving at plant #3 sometime during November or December of 2033.
Still, that's roughly a decade of going through this with a minimum of sixty children, not counting any children Ray potentially caused to be shipped out early with his experimentation with the tracker deactivator. She might not have done it with the first few, maybe thinking it was potential evidence that could be used against her as an indication of weakness, but eventually it does amass to quite a collection.

This and him banking on Norman's rigid morality being enough to ensure he would be tossed aside as part of his penance for all the siblings he couldn't save. Hoping they would hate him so his death would hurt them less.

(Chapter 181.1 | S1 Episode 6 | Chapter 93)
random but alot keep ignoring that ray wanted Norman to use him when he was chaught being a traitor like its not even a big deal to me that ppl dont talk about it but like.. i think about that sometimes he was ready to die and be the bad guy in their memory as long they are safe
#the only reasons he catches it is because Ray failed to account for how big of an impact Emma had on Norman as his moral compass#prompting him to confront Ray instead of just letting his hatred fester longer#and because Ray is just as much of a dramatic ass as Norman#he couldn't help himself from letting slip he was doing all of this so they both wouldn't die#genius idiots absolutely made for each other kljsdflkj I love them your honor#the mileage I get out of that Ch93 panel is crazy can you believe Shirai and Demizu did that for us#also that they added that brief but beautiful line of soft and fond reflection for Norman in ep6 while they're doing the laundry#taking in the gravity of all Ray had given up and planned to give up for them#and moving him from the enemy categorization in his mind firmly back into the βfriend who must be saved at all costsβ one#they really did all of that for us it's fuckin' wild#Norray#Norrayemma#Norman#Ray#Emma#Pre-Canon#TPN 181.1#Escape Arc#TPN S1#TPN S1e06#TPN 093#Goldy Pond Battle Arc

#what fucks me up most about Norman's departure to Lambda is - he couldn't know if Ray survived #yes his plan was (almost) perfect but would Ray really come along? #it was so close for Emma to catch the match #everything could have gone up in flames (literally) so easily #so Norman had to leave his suicidal best friend behind #Emma's strong. Emma surely made it out of Grace Field #but Ray? would he want to be saved? #Norman's fear of hearing Ray didn't make it is my headcanon why Norman *only* called for Emma first when meeting her again #because seeing Ray again - or worse. not - would have broken him #yes there was a lot of anger in him for Ray being a traitor but even more sorrow for his friend's miserable life #and his sacrifices to them (via @officersnickers)
The way I go absolutely insane reading @salsae's smoke and mirrors
and honeynpeaches' Between Your Fingers, Between the Lines
where Norman conjures phantoms of them in his mind and those doubts creep in, but he reaffirms a world without them is inconceivable.
Ray intends to die. From what he said, he's doing it so you and I don't get killed. He didn't include himself in the numbers. He's not escaping. Ray has decided to die inside this house. He's going to set himself on fire to distract Mom in order to let us run away. That's his entire plan.
But I won't allow him to do that. Not ever.
The inclusion of these two simple frames in the anime is everything to me actually
#everything to me canon as far as I'm concerned#to say nothing of Norman subconsciously picking up on the similarities between Isabella and Ray in sae's work#but that's for a separate conversation lol (just fuck me up chief)#πππ

#did they swear that much? wow (via @officersnickers)
It's not egregious (hence why it's not in the sip category), but it's still quite a bit more than S1 (this is obviously because they learned more swears in the bunker library /j)
(S1 Episode 6 | S1 Episode 10)
My personal favorite is having Norman and Ray call each other dumbasses upon their reunion
(S2 Episode 6; This season can have a few crumbs of rights post-episode 2. little bby whipping out the latest biggest swear word he learned to impress and show how serious he is because how dare Norman (unwittingly) trick them into thinking he was dead for almost two years and absolutely failing at keeping it together as Laura Stahl gives it the most elated and tearful spin it's so endearing, and then Jeannie Tirado's reciprocal one is so sweet with its light feigned indignation laced with gratefulness as Norman picks up that cheeky side of their relationship where they left off. goodest boys π€π€)
But taking a quick peek back, there are a few more than I remember
(S2 Episode 5 | S2 Episode 6)
What it feels like watching the season past episode 2

I'd argue the first gif along with sequences like these showcase him thinking and fretting over Ray just as frequently. There's vitriol thrown into the mix because of how hurt he was by Ray's perceived betrayal, but if anything the ferocity behind those sentiments are what propel him to so swiftly and strongly swing the pendulum back to viewing Ray as a dear friend who must be protected and deserves to be saved at all costs.
This in turn influences Ray to see Norman atop the wall during the escape as the final marker of him genuinely internalizing one of the deepest desires in his heart that he had locked away for so long, which I personally put on the same level as Emma having a vision of Norman after Leuvis stabs her in chapter 93 and find interesting what leads one to be played up over the other. I'd also say the focus on Norman voicing how much he wants to see Emma again too, though to be fair the anime lends itself to this as well.
But yes, the way he consistently voices wanting to see the both of them along with the rest of his family again and the facsimiles he'd conjure of them to keep him going π€π€π§‘ (already posted these fic excerpts on another post but they're just as applicable here and they own my ass for how foundational they were in my interpretation of the series with their poignant portrayal of the dynamic between the trio so yolo)

(smoke and mirrors by @salsae)

(Between Your Fingers, Between the Lines by honeynpeaches)
And even after they reunite, his thoughts repeatedly return to the both of them as he ruminates on what he plans to do.

(Chapter 129 | Chapter 145)
While desperately wanting to reach out to both of them the entire time for help.
