The Valley of the End: Ch 21 Sneak Peek

When Sasuke was four years old, a thunderstorm hit Konoha. He’d only seen rain, never lightning, and the bright, branching flashes outside his window terrified him. Father would be angry if he found out. Even as a little boy, Sasuke knew that much.

He also knew that his mother was the safest place in the whole, wide world (a small world, actually, but he didn’t understand that yet).

Sasuke woke her in the middle of the night with a silent tug on her nightgown sleeve. Father was out of town on some important Hokage business, so he didn’t have to worry about getting caught.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, her question blurred with sleep.

“The storm. It’s…” 

“Scary?” 

He nodded.

Sometimes when Father was away and Sasuke had a nightmare, she let him sleep in the big bed, but this time she said no. 

“Bad dreams can’t hurt you when you’re awake, but storms are real. When you’re scared of something real, you shouldn’t run from it. Running will only make you more afraid.”

That didn’t make sense to Sasuke, but she taught him in the best way he could learn: by taking him outside to see the storm.

A porch wrapped around the back half of their house like protective arms. That’s where she took him that night, where she picked him up and held him on her hip, telling stories about lightning and fire.

“You’re a son of the Uchiha,” she said. “This is who you are, Sasuke. Never fear that.”

He nodded, but the next jolt of lightning still made him flinch.

His mother hugged him tighter through the rolling thunder, then sat on the porch swing with him curled up in her lap.

“As long as I’m here, I’ll never let anything hurt you.”

That wasn’t true. She tried her best, but there was only so much a wife could do from within a cold-hearted Hokage’s shadow.

Maybe she hadn’t realized that on the night she held him in her arms, teaching him that not only was she the safest place in the world, she would shape his world to be safe for him. 

She killed his fear of storms that night. As rain played music on the roof and lightning burned the skies, Sasuke discovered a love for something as beautiful as it was deadly.

Looking back, that should have been a warning sign, a lesson in and of itself. When he feels loved enough, he can look past a pretty lie. He can trust for the sake of comfort, even if real danger is barely hidden overhead.

REASONS NOT TO VOTE FOR BIDEN:

Wants to bring back penalizing those who can’t afford to pay for private insurance. Personally fought to make cancer medication unaffordable for patients in developing nations. In the middle of a pandemic Biden still does not want anyone under the age of 60 to be able to buy into Medicare, a plan somehow even worse than Hillary’s planned Medicare age of eligibility of 55.  Called Strom Thurmond, one of the most notoriously racist segregationists in Congress, his “closest friend” and delivered an impassioned eulogy at his funeral.  Has a very, very, very long history of racist comments.  Generally has no understanding of racism in America. Says you’re not black if you don’t vote for him.  Seems to awkwardly downplay Martin Luther King Jr.’s death during the George Floyd protests.  He is polling worse with Hispanics than Hillary did in large part because he is openly ignoring them and their votes.  As VP his administration deported more people than any other in American history, deporting people at a higher rate than Trump’s administration even according to ICE themselves. Voted to ban immigrants with HIV, locking up Haitian refugees in Guantanamo Bay. He now lies about this Iraq War vote quite often yet still also says he’d “do it again.” Lied about getting shot down in Iraq and experiences in Afghanistan. Recklessly threatens nuclear war with North Korea and seems to think Kim Jong Un is from South Korea and that they’ve met when they haven’t. Wrote the racist Crime Bill that intentionally led to record-breaking mass incarceration. He still defends the legislation, championing it as his signature achievement and positioning himself to the right of even Reagan and Bush.  Allegedly raped his staffer Tara Reade and then retaliated against her until she quit. He refuses to release his Senate files that could exonerate him if innocent, even though they are usually made public, and his top advisor has deleted her #MeToo tweets to avoid seeming inconsistent in her support for her rapist boss.  Long history of creepily/patronizingly groping/sniffing/kissing/grabbing and intimidating/insulting to women and young girls just so many, many, many times, continuing even after his non-apology.  Has at least eight sexual harassment allegations against him.  Opposed equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community even very recently, only eventually coming around just 8 short years ago, and is still awkward at best on the issue. Defends billionaires hoarding wealth and promises that “nothing will fundamentally change.” Regularly demonizes the poor with racist dogwhistles.

The world of publishing is so damn grim now. The industry seems to have forgotten that part of its job is marketing debut authors!

I'm so glad you've enjoyed it enough to reread it that many times... despite the fact that it's unfinished. I know it's been a very long time since I updated, but that is *not* because I've abandoned TVOTE. That's very much not the case. I've got the rest of the story planned out and I'm trying very hard to work on it.

Unfortunately, life is a hot mess, which is making it very hard for me to write anything that requires a lot of brainpower. TVOTE is, for better or worse, a complex story that I can only work on when I'm in possession of all my faculties lol

Hi, I hope you’re doing fine! Sooo, I don’t know if I’m crazy but did you published a FanFiction that was like an “extra” about The Valley Of The End? I can’t found it anymore, so I’m like “omg am I losing my marbles?” 🤭

You're not crazy, I did post a little fic that was a cut scene from TVOTE.

This is embarrassing to admit, but I got anxious for a few different reasons and I deleted it. tbh the main one was that it got literally ZERO comments on AO3, I've been in a difficult place mentally of late, and that made me feel bad enough that I pulled the fic both there and FFN.

I've had fics bomb before (though not usually that badly). It's just part of the fanfic game; some stories hit for people, some don't, and that's okay.

But this one bombing just made me feel like shit because I've been depressed anyway. So no, you're not losing your marbles lol. The fic was there... and now it's not :/
