Priest getou and nun reader or villager reader....(anything other than the word both isnt acceptable...😡😡😡 /j) -🪄
🪄 ANON I SEE YOU AND YOU RAISE A VALID POINT but please consider…… priest!geto and non-believer!reader.
like… imagine. you just happen to waltz into a church one day. you don’t believe in god, you aren’t interested in praying, but you’re exploring a new town and the church is pretty and you figure it could be a nice way to burn time.
you enter the building to find that a sermon is taking place. a priest is speaking to the few rows of people listening; it’s a fairly small church, but paintings and sculptures and beautiful cathedral glass give it a sense of mystique that you’re drawn to. so you take a seat and halfheartedly listen, not praying like the rest, not singing along to the hymns… you stick out like a sore thumb, but hey, it’s not as if anyone is paying attention.
except someone is, and it happens to be the priest that was holding the sermon just a second ago. the same one you spent most of your time oogling once the paintings started to bore you, because he’s so pretty for a priest. beautiful long black hair, amber eyes, sharp facial features, pretty hands — and the smoothest, silkiest voice you’ve heard in your life. like a sun-soaked bundle of lillies.
… also, his cassock is just a little too tight of a fit to tear your eyes away from.
you stick around a little longer once most people have left, just scrolling on your phone and basking in the quiet, and that’s when he approaches you. he jokingly tells you that it’s always obvious when a non-believer enters a place of worship, but he’s not mad; only amused. you end up chatting a bit about your beliefs, he’s a lot more chill than you expected, and…. well. he’s just really, really charming.
so maybe you end up coming back the week after. maybe his smile is a bit like a spider’s web. maybe it becomes a kind of routine to speak to him after his sermons; you still don’t sing along to the hymns or spend any time on prayers, and he still finds it funny. maybe once in a while you end up liking a paragraph from the scripture he’s reciting, and he’s always more than happy to discuss it with you. but mostly you’re there for him. for your chats, for standing outside and badgering him about how contradictory the old testament is while he smokes and listens with an amused grin.
rain hits the ground with a steady rhythm, earthy tobacco floods your veins, spiders by the ceiling weave a web of dew, and his presence is a little more intoxicating than you think is appropriate.
suguru just… isn’t a very orthodox priest. he only believes about a tenth of what the bible says, he has his own view of god, his own thoughts on worship. he smokes. he may or may not occasionally manipulate church-goers into donating money so he can invest in another overpriced painting. you once ask him if there are any bodies in the basement you should know about, and he answers that any self-respecting priest wouldn’t conduct their blood rituals in the basement of their own church. he knows how to pick locks. he tells you once, very quietly, that he doesn’t believe man was created in god’s image. there’s a look in his eyes that you don’t comment on.
he’s funny. charming. pleasantly suspicious. your conversations are enjoyable for the both of you, and eventually the edges of his cedar eyes begin to crinkle the slightest bit whenever you walk into his field of vision. sometimes he eyes your lips for a little too long, and a honeyed irony seeps into his grin when you call him out on it. he asks you if you’re tempting him on purpose, and you shrug. whatever exists between you remains unspoken.
one day, he tells you that he believes it was god who sent you to him. you furrow your brows and protest with a mutter reminding him of your beliefs, how you believe in free will, how you waltzed into his church out of your own volition. no one else’s.
he only smiles, and flicks the butt of his cigarette. you think he remains unconvinced.

What Saiki ships do you support?
i'm not really into saiki ships that much tbh! there are certain dynamics (saiki nendo and kaido, psykickers, saiki and aiura, saiki and teruhashi) i find most interesting and fun to play around with in my drawings and comics and stuff, but i wouldn't say i'd call them "ships" because i dont really see em as romantic. honestly i dont really get my enjoyment of the series from shipping, its more about the friendship for me. im a saiki loves his friends truther at my core...thats the thing that matters to me the most

Aiden hcs?
I'm not really the best at explaining headcanons and explaining stuff BUUUUT
I feel like Aiden DESPITE being an ass grew closer to Maya and Gill after s2 takes place. After what happened in Sky city I feel like he's loosened up more (having been defeated by jesse). He's still jealous but more understanding of his actions and such. When you talk to him after fleeing Sky city although his apology seemed a little strained, I feel like he really was sorry and is HOPEFULLY going to be a better person 🫶🫶
I can see Aiden still being a little ass after the fact but I'd like to think he gets better over the years. I feel like he would read Lukas' works and try to base his behavior off them and maybe try writing stuff on his own?! Especially because again after the fight in Sky city he said he might pick up writing and settle down. I can totally see him, Maya, and Gill all settling down together as friends (they're found family I love them).
I need to think about bow I view him more ik that🔥🔥 But I'm making a list and doing a character study of everyone in mcsm so maybe I'll post that stuff here in the future 🤯🤯

i wanna hear your law talesofarise thoughts then
ohh this is a can of worms you’re opening rn. im so obsessed with this guy and am always thinking about how the game does him dirty so please share in this with me
(obviously spoilers ahead for tales of arise) (and a few for beyond the dawn)
(and yes im being dead serious about this)
more than anything else or any of the major criticisms you hear about tales of arise, literally my biggest problem with it is how law is treated, both by the other party members and by the writing itself.
so let’s start with why law immediately caught my attention as a character at the beginning: hes a turncoat! he’s a dahnan actively working with the renans! the story bring you straight from calaglia, where that would have been UNTHINKABLE, to show you “hey! not only do dahnans work with the renans, some of them go so far as to prioritize that work over their own family!” which is fascinating! we get thrown into a fight with law, where he clearly uses the same fighting skills as his father, he has calaglian instrumentation in his fight music, and he doesnt show any mercy. all this while knowing hes going to become a party member! because then we learn through the course of that chapter (and a little bit later in the game) that law’s working there under duress, that he watched his comrades be killed in front of him, that he was left alive if he joined with the snake eyes. and he still has nightmares about that. we learn that he DOESNT hate his father, just left on bad terms and couldnt reconcile with his father’s way of being a father. he couldnt stand how overbearing and patronizing zephyr was, and the first thing zephyr does when they reunite is do exactly that! no wonder law was frustrated at him! but then you get to see his absolute loneliness as a dahnan working for the snake eyes. he gets no sympathy from the renans who treat him as other because hes a dahnan, and active dislike from dahnans because hes working with renans. but if his other option was to be killed, then we as the audience have to ask if this was a decision that’s sympathetic. but we do get this conversation:
law: “i never did tell you how i ended ip hanging around with the snake eyes, did i?”
alphen: “not properly. all i know is you had a falling-out with your dad and ran away from home.”
law: “getting to cyslodia almost killed me. once there, though, i actually ended up joining a resistance organization, believe it or not. of course, before long someone ratted us out, and we were ambushed by the snake eyes. i’d never seen such brutality. if i hadn’t surrendered…”
alphen: “law?”
law: “i don't know why they let me live. they made me watch as they butchered my friends right in front of my eyes. i still have nightmares. i hear roars of zeugles as my friends scream, the snow stained red with blood. and all the while those bastards, laughing. i thought that with ganabelt defeated, i’d be able to put it all behind me. turns out that was a little optimistic. i was terrified they would kill me, too. so i wound up betraying the memory of my friends, and getting my old man killed in the process. i wonder if i’m any braver now. what if one day i panic again, and end up running away like always?”
alphen: “and leave us behind? you really think you’d do that?”
law: “i hope not. but who’s to say what i’m really capable of?”
[lies down]
so there’s the whole thing with law trying to free zephyr and fight back against the snake eyes. as a dahnan that’d be a death sentence even if it weren’t coming from a member of the snake eyes. and yes cyslodia’s built on betrayal, but it establishes law as somebody who betrayed his father, who betrayed his people, and who betrayed his pledged loyalty. it also establishes that when push comes to shove, he cant stand by as an observer and enforcer — hes a protector at heart. and it gets proven again and again throughout the game when hes the first one to jump into things that he isnt made to be an observer! as a person hes so fundamentally opposed to what the snake eyes do but still managed to be convinced to work with them for his own well being. we see in beyond the dawn that he experiences deep regret for what he did and for how he was directly responsible for the suffering of other dahnans he sent to the pylons. hell, even when alphen gets him come along with them, theres this little interaction:
law: its not like theres anyone waiting for me in calaglia either. …plenty of ditches along the road. maybe i’ll find one to die in.”
alphen: “how about a fresh start?”
law: “after the kinds of things ive done? i don't know where id even begin.”
so we need to keep in mind that even if he doesnt talk about it, even if he puts on a front, that he a) thinks hes irredeemable, b) feels intense guilt for what hes done, c) still has nightmares about seeing his friends be killed, and d) is living with the knowledge that if it weren’t for his actions, his father would still be alive. (and its important to note that he recognizes it’s not just his own personal loss, he’s well aware how deeply zephyr’s death affects both the party and the crimson crows.)
and here i’ve got to talk about an under appreciated law detail that i love about him so very much: law, the loudmouthed, immature-acting brawler of the party, has the capacity and skills to have been a great snake eye. look — we saw how he acted with zephyr. but in the “stowaway law” skit he says “eh, lets just say i’ve always had a knack for sneaking around since i was little” to explain how he escaped calaglia. hell, for months, as a kid in a brand new realm, he managed to join a resistance cell and avoid getting caught (for a while). when he helps zephyr escape, he uses smoke bombs. when the party is getting tailed by kisara in viscint, hes not only the only person who notices, he manages to fall back, sneak up on HER unaware, and get a blade to her throat! the woman who's supposed to be the best guardsman in the realm! in beyond the dawn, he can sense the party's being followed and calls out nazamil even when she's invisible. and when that zeugle is attacking pharia ranch, law's the first person to be able to track this invisible creature. law’s perceptive, sneaky, unafraid to dirty his hands for the sake of others, and this trait is soooo fucking underutilized in this game…
which probably brings me to why i cant stand tales of arise sometimes. for every incident of law doing this, or showing literally any emotional vulnerability, theres three incidents of the other party members (rinwell) disparaging him. and it pisses me off SO MUCH. its obvious from that first conversation when he joins the party that while he does have a lighthearted nature, hes got a ton of guilt and self-hatred and regret that take precedence, and he’ll put on a joking front to cover that up. because how can he let himself be who is he when he just got his father killed? and this slips out plenty of times in the game — tons of skits have him start to bring up how it felt to lose his father — but every goddamn time he starts to talk about himself, rinwell insults him.
im not fucking joking! ive played this game twice through. i copy down every skit and conversation that law’s involved in for the entire game. law can’t get a fucking SENTENCE out about who he is as a person without rinwell insulting him. the game tries to play this off as banter when its ALWAYS one sided. rinwell gets to have her emotional scenes with other characters without law jumping in. hell, if she starts to be serious with him, he listens! but heaven forbid he get the same respect in turn! and its not just her. shionne never hears him out (and hell, i love shionne the most, but i really dont like that part of her) and its clear she doesnt see much past his front. kisara and dohalim both see him as totally immature.
“but zad,” you say, “law IS immature.” yeah! of course he is! hes 16 and hes never been allowed to have a childhood! hes been involved with the crimson crows since the day he was born! he escapes calaglia as a kid! hes had time to join a resistance cell and end up working with the snake eyes all by the time he’s 16!!! he says it himself, traveling with the party is the first time hes been allowed to be himself. he wears silly wolf decorations because he thinks they look cool and he doesnt have anywhere else to put them. he playfights with alphen. he lets himself have fun in fights. he (unsuccessfully) flirts. he eats good food and learns to cook. hes got immature taste because hes a teenager. i know i sure was the same! he makes ill-timed jokes because he hasnt been able to be a normal part of friendly conversation before. he has a hard time reading other people because he’s only had people patronize him or suspect him until now.
but the fact is that for all his silliness and immaturity, he is more than that. hes sneaky and traumatized and guilt-ridden and has such a big heart that the first things he does when finding himself is to protect others. (hell, he even says “if im not training, its easy for me to get anxious.” ) and it frequently feel like the writers forget his backstory and motivations and treat him solely as comic relief and as a tool to develop other characters (rinwell).
the most egregious example of this is the almeidrea incident, which i can hardly watch. law’s a character who joins the party and immediately gets revenge on the guy who killed his father (which is still an awesome scene), realizes that doesnt bring him back or undo law’s complicity, then stews with that knowledge and doesnt tell anybody. i love a good revenge plot, but i can see where he comes from when he says “killing the person who wronged you doesnt undo what they did”. but what really and utterly kills me is that all of that is a throwaway line used to develop rinwell’s story. time and time again in this game law’s completely disregarded and im honestly so fucking sick of it 😭 the most we get is this line:
alphen: “law left home because of how much he hated his father. i think law spent a lot of time thinking about how they never got to make things right. and if i had to guess, killing ganabelt didn't make any of those feelings go away.”
and the handful of good scenes (law’s pep talk to alphen when shionne’s kidnapped, law’s conversation with the traitor dahnan and the informants)
so yeah. i dont have a conclusion to this. i adore that law’s a traitor and hes sneaky and hes competent and fights like his dad and wears a silly wolf decoration and lives with unimaginable guilt and has nightmares and has favourite foods and flirts badly and likes being a farmer. im just like cheering for this guy and supporting him unconditionally because the game itself sure won’t.

you mentioned an oc, Thatcher, in your tags on an oc prompt post. who's he?
Tumblr media
these tags??
oh Thatcher. oh my sweet boy. he is most definitely "always having a bad time, all the time". LMFAO.
his name is Thatcher Black! he's a priest, in his early thirties and dedicated to his job and community. he's a very, very honest and kind man, he would do anything for anyone if they asked. he's devout to his religion and tries to use it in a way to better the world, not tear it down. that being said, he also struggles with putting himself first and standing up for himself because of it.
well. an angel named Abaddon (or Abby) is sent to earth to be his sort of... guardian angel. except they are incredibly bad at their job. I'm still working on their story, but they are using Thatcher to regain their status as a high ranking angel after being cast out because of...previous activities on earth not going as planned. I don't want to type too much, but just know Abby is not a good person and cares little for the people (especially humans) they hurt along the way of achieving their goal. they are just here to have a good time.
so! long story short, the two meet and Thatcher's entire world view is shaken to its core. sure, angels are real apparently, but there is no singular all mighty "God" that he preaches about, only several different deities running different aspects of the world, and the angels that work under them. all of his views are wrong, everything he preaches about is wrong, the book he runs his life by is wrong. he feels like a fraud, but tries to continue his life as normally as he can despite being shaken to his core. and on top of everything else he now has to deal with this angel taking up space in his life. and apartment.
their story is a bit long but Abby gets him into many a precarious and dangerous situation. Thatcher slowly unravels as they spend more time together, him falling in love with Abby being his absolute downfall and being the thing that ends up killing him. I haven't decided if his death is the "canon" ending, but it feels fitting for a man who loses himself and intertwines his life with such a dangerous otherworldly being.
SORRY THAT GOT LONG! him and Abby's stories are intertwined so I can't have one without the other. I should have just said Thatcher is Abby's punching bag and been done with it haha. Thatch is never having a good day ever in his life. but at least he gets to kiss a beautiful angel.
unfinished art of them for your viewing pleasure

what do you think of Flame Princess being made of candy in Elements?
Flame Princess having such a big role in Elements in general is awesome!! It's fun to see how she absolutely thrives in the Fire element but basically loses her whole personality when forced to be overly sweet. Also I think it's fun how her being there is used to make the sweetheart song even more uncomfortable for Finn >:p
The noise she makes when she first transforms to Candy is genuinely like, the saddest thing I've ever heard though :(

YOU SAID SEND ASKS EVEN IF THEY'RE DUMB SO I'M GONNA SEND ONE.
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE DAYCARE ATTENDANT WHEN SAW THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME (IN GAME AND IN FANDOM) AND WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU REALLY, REALLY LIKED THEM?
okokokok so basically i was avoiding fnaf like the plague bc i am terrified of animatronics and horrible with jumpscares in particular! but my best friend is a long time big time fnaf fan and so since like 2017 i was consuming fnaf content passively through them, and even since the game came out i was seeing stuff about it i just never got into it bc it wasn't super appealing
i was really invested in afton family lore n such so i got into fnaf because of that but was avoiding most animatronic content bc weee big fear (a few exceptions of animatronics though i.e. ballora) I could not figure out why i was so scared of them but I FIGURED IT OUT!! more on that later-
so fnaf sb came out n ofc I was watching playthroughs on call w/ my friend (before i played it, i played it soon after) and when sun showed up i was very much,,,, not scared of em?? i could not figure out why?? but i didn't really *focus* on them cuz i wasn't super into fnaf outside of afton family stuff
my friend kept sending me sun and moon fanart bc I did not have an upset reaction to them which was abnormal up until that point, and so i started to actively think they were neat! not super into them to the extent i came to be though- but i did figure out that the reason i have no issue with them and do have an issue with outer animatronics is because of their eyes! even moon who has "pupils" doesnt have the horrible doll-like "realistic" eyes most of the animatronics have- which is what was so unnerving about them to me. absolutely hate dolls and stuffed animals with eyes i have no idea why but one day they were just BAD and as a kidd i threw all the ones i had away and never looked back for the most part,,, but anyways sun and moon's designs were very appealing to me as i've always loved clown/jester type designs, celestial designs, pantomime-esque designs, marionette/bjd type designs (every time i draw them they have ball joints even now), etc. i also love love play structures and i've also always lowkey wanted to work in early education or in a daycare so the very environment was appealing! the designs really hit all of my interests AND were free of what was terrifying about the other animatronics
ANYWAYS i think the turning point (like it was for a lot of people in this fandom) was bamsara's work/solar lunacy! up until that point i had specifically avoided and never touched self insert fics + art, but it's so well written it changed my initial views about the whole category entirely ! because of that i was able to appreciate/consume more of the dca fandom content, which has so many talented creators! aside from that i remember being really really invested in 8um8ble8ee's dca work!
the designs being so appealing to my interests is likely one of the main reasons though aya!! jesters! bells! glow in the dark! stars! sun and moon motif! they remind me of those porcelain pierrots- one of my interests is the history of pantomime/commedia dell arte! i really don't think there's one thing about them or one moment i can remember that i was like YOOOOOOOOO!!!! it kinda just took over my brain hdsjkhsad
anyways i do remember distinctly sometime last year going wait- wtf?? because i'd thought this was a small time interest! something small i'd only taken casual interest in for a month or so, like so many other things, but then realizing i'd been making ART (not just consuming media) of them since at least december of 2021??? which is kinda insane to me!! (/pos ofc) before that time i was going through a really messy and just bad point in my life, and one of the ways I was tracking time was by the way my hair looked- i'd gotten obsessed with mykull afton after all the bad stuff and impulse cut my hair into a mullet and re-dyed it my natural colour after having bleached it brown, but this "first" drawing of sun was BEFORE my hair changed?? which i had not realized at all?? somehow in my head it was bad thing->mykull->dca but it looks like i was consuming and creating dca content through it all
anyways hsjhsjakjas i forgot what i was saying but i think i just really really liked them since i first saw em- i just didn't realize how much they had infiltrated my life until later somehow?? so ~may 2022 was when but really it was more like ~dec 2021? they make me so so happy i have no idea what it is to be honest
so ye in-game wise it was sorta on sight, fandom wise it was bc of solar lunacy + 8um8ble8ee !!
i still think its really funny that i like em so much, considering some of my biggest fears are Animatronics, Jumpscares, and The Dark BAHAHAHA

do you have any book recs?
ofc! these’ll be pretty general, but they’re all books i’ll recommend to basically anyone. for nonfiction and theory:
thomas nail, marx in motion (reading marx through new materialism. especially recommend ch. 1, 3, and 5)
henri lefebvre, writings on cities (it’s poetic praxis babes. always obsessed with this tbh)
karl marx, early writings (from penguin classics—i find this a lot more approachable and clear than capital)
jon levenson, sinai and zion (this book made me become a religious studies major, and it’s an incredibly clear and insightful look at early judaism. i personally found it really affecting)
georges bataille, erotism (duh)
for fiction (these are just my favorite books of all time lol):
matthew gregory lewis, the monk (this is the subject of my thesis so im a little biased)
t.h. white, the once and future king (funny and heartfelt and it makes me cry)
c.s. lewis, the screwtape letters (not to overstate things but this is one of the central works of contemporary christian thought. to ME)
charles brockden brown, wieland (seminal text of the american gothic my beloved)
chuck palahniuk, choke (ive said this before but people read this way less frequently than fight club or invisible monsters and i love it)
patricia grace, potiki (holy shit this book is so good)

Sad the DnD movie seems to have a weak sauce intro-to-tiefling tiefling in it, but I feel this is a step forward for all us weird tiefling players. Keep up the good work of making crazy lil blorbos. Yuri being tief with vulture wings is a fun variant on the design.
yesss i loved the tief in the movie and hoping it there's a sequel we can see some cool red tiefs with hooves or claws! As an aside I would love to see some drow in the next movie if they make a sequel!
Also it's so funny you mention vulture bc that is what I was going for in terms of inspos for Yuri's tief look and I was also thinking about when he eventually gets a tail, it would look like a raptor tail with feathers at the end of it!
I'm definitely going to heavily lean into the vulture look for Yuri's tief design...

Another question for Mako! (This time featuring Saph!) Long question time!
How do they feel about each other's little siblings? Since they're both very protective of their own younger siblings, we wonder how that dynamic would go. Also, how would they feel about them meeting up? Would Charlotte and Finley be friends? Because they're kinda in the same age range. Give us the story of how they met each other's families!
this one is so interesting bcuz i have thought about this a lot !!
(read the answer under here cuz its v long, E19 spoilers ahead !)
First meetings:
-Finley and Charlotte actually meet at the old Yureyu HQ when the kids are held captive there. He just peeked in on her with curiosity as Mako and him would sometimes go in and out of the building for things.
She noticed him and they started talking and quickly bonded over gushing about their cool older siblings. Basically a sassy cool girl and sunshine boy friendship dynamic.
-Mako did not know Charlotte personally, but she still pushed her out of the way of one of Blake's icicles in Victory Road. Charlotte got some respect for them after that.
-Saphira saved Finley from Sirius in Victory Road and brought him back safely to Mako. At the time, he was the younger brother of a Meteor member she did not trust, but she couldn't leave a child all alone. She also felt like she owed Mako after they protected Charlotte.
Once all of them get to know each other:
-Mako thinks Charlotte is pretty cool and sometimes joins in on teasing Saphira with her.
-Saphira thinks Finley is a little naive, but doesn't fault him too much as he's only 15, and it was mostly Mako's influence for keeping so much of the bad stuff Meteor did from him. She cares for him nonetheless.
The protectiveness over their younger siblings is the main reason Saph and Mako actually were able to bond in any kind of way, as Saphira despises Meteor for everything they've done.

Bestie please talk about your experience w/ silicone eggs I’ve been thinking about getting some for a while and idk if they’d be right for me
ooo sure!!! so i actually only have one egg, but! if ur just starting to experiment with egg stuff then id recommend getting kegal balls first! half bc theyre smaller and easier to take, but they still give the same sensation, and half bc silicone eggs can be fuckin pricey
the actual sensation itself is a rly interesting one and kinda hard to describe. when ur first inserting it its just the same as inserting a dildo or st, until u get to the widest part of the egg, and then once the widest part is in its kinda like? ur body is pulling the rest of it in? and when you let it it just keeeeps going and ur body pulls it deep inside u, and once its as deep as it can go, u just feel so full and its such an amazing feeling.
its different to just a dildo in that ur hole can close around it when its in, so you feel full inside but ur hole itself isnt stretched
and then. you get to push it out. which can be scary at first bc sometimes ull be like oh fuck its got stuck, but it hasnt! just keep pushing, or get ur fingers and kinda pull urself open slightly, either downwards or upwards, and that should help release it!
but apart from that, pushing it out (or ‘birthing’ it) is such a gorgeous feeling. again, it just feels like when u inserted it, but feeling it descend down to ur hole and then having to push nice and hard when it gets to the thickest part is amaaaazing. and then the sudden relief of pressure when it pops out? honestly just that feeling often makes me cum, or even squirt haha
BUT YEH so that is what it feels like, soz for long text, but if u wanna get some then u can always dm me and let me know what country ur based in and i can recommend some online stores that are local to u so u dont have to pay silly amounts of shipping!!

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks..
tbh this is extremely hard to answer because I have many interests. I’m sure I’ll feel bad when I remember the hundred other characters that should have made the list. I’m not putting any Ikuhara characters because it’d been too hard to pick and honestly I’d have to go through each work individually.
1. Tenma from Naoki Urasawa’s Monster. I don’t claim to be a complicated person, alright. I just think he’s nice. every time I read Monster I get more attached to him like a little baby duck, which is what all the other characters in that story do as well so I’m valid. trying to put it into words is hard--he’s just an alluring combo of pathetic, ridiculous, cool, strong, and kind. plus he kinda becomes a religious figure by the end and I’m a sucker for that shit.
Tumblr media
2. Xie Lian from TGCF/Heaven Official’s Blessing. I read the novels this summer after watching the donghua. I was just expecting a decent BL, but what I got was epic historical supernatural fiction (and BL). Xie Lian is such an impressively written character. his story helped me deal with my own fall from grace, as it were, and was overall cathartic and engaging. plus he’s my type. step aside Hua Cheng, I’d die for him first.

3. Orel from Moral Orel. I love this show a lot because of its focus on the cruelty and hypocrisy of WASP America, and Orel is relatable for struggling to understand the bulltshit answers he gets to all his questions. he’s a lot more innocent than I was as a kid, but I think his kind of purity plays well against the satirical, dark edge of the show.

4. Reki from Haibane Renmei. most of the reasons I love her aren’t revealed until the very end of the show. I’ll say that I love her because she’s the ultimate manifestation of the story’s themes of guilt and redemption.
Tumblr media
5. Ishida from Koe no Katachi. I just finished rereading this manga recently. if you want a character who does wrong, suffers, tries to change himself, but finds it isn’t that easy, Ishida is your man. he’s such a funny, well-written teen boy, but also someone I think anyone from any background can see themselves in--the good and the bad.
Tumblr media
6. Naruto from... you know. Naruto was the first anime I became really obsessed with, when I was in middle school, and Naruto himself is the first character I can remember becoming attached to in an intense, lasting way. I loved him so much and I still have that attachment to him. he’s so, so cute, and so, so lovable. when I’m done with my first round of Ikuhara vids, I’m going to download Naruto so I can make my friend a Sasuke fancam and I’m also gonna make a Naruto edit just for me :)

7. Miyuki from Naoki Urasawa’s Happy! I’ve read everything by Urasawa except for Yawara, and I’m one of the only people who seems to have read Happy! I gotta say, would I pick it as one of his best works? no. I love everything he’s done, but something like 20th Century Boys or Billy Bat is clearly a more serious, meaningful story than Happy!, which comes out of his transition phase between writing romantic comedy sports manga and his later thrillers. however... Happy! is one of those works which makes me lose my mind regardless of quality. and Miyuki, the main character, is just so damn adorable. I find her a very appealing, sweet character. beyond that, kind of like Monster, the entire story is about people trying to break her down, but she refuses to ever give up and I love that sort of thing when played right.

8. Ged from Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea series. I am still digging into Le Guin’s body of work but I’ve read most of her novels and short story collections. I could absolutely make a top ten list with just characters from her books. however, I managed to narrow it down to just three from this list, all from the Earthsea books. Ged is the only character who appears in all six books, and the reader gets to experience close the entire course of his life. he starts as an arrogant, careless boy and grows into a wise man. Le Guin decided not to leave him after he does his final great act, and his story continues after he loses his power. Tehanu, the fourth book in the series, is probably my favorite book I’ve ever read, I’ve thought about writing an analysis comparing it with RGU, and one of its main themes is life after loss and trauma. his story interwines with the next two characters on this list.
Tumblr media
9. Tenar from Earthsea. like Ged, we get to see most of her life throughout the books. book 2 contains her coming of age story, while Tehanu features her as a widow, struggling between the life of an ordinary woman and her status in the mythology of Earthsea. she brings so much fire, mirth, and strength to the series. she’s someone I wish I had in my life, and if you really pressed me, she’s my favorite character Le Guin ever wrote.
Tumblr media
10. Tehanu from Earthsea. this character is a strange one to try to write about. I’ve seen people criticize her writing by saying there’s nothing to her, she’s just a vessel for the story. but I can’t agree. as someone who’s known people who went through severe childhood trauma, I think that Tehanu is written with thought and care. I love how unnerving and unknowable she is, but also how she is written like she’s any other child. the ending of her story in the final book made me sob and sob and sob.

hi there! i watched mars red because of you and now i'm extremely [feelings?????] because of it! i thought you might be amused by this. there's...so much i want to chew on about this anime but i thought i'd ask you first: what are your thoughts and feelings on suwa's characterization? i'm obsessed with him but also i cannot articulate a single coherent thought about him
THIS DOES BRING ME INFINITE JOY ACTUALLY!! I love converting people to my favorite dramatic vampire anime. I too was very [feelings?????] after watching it. I think that is the common experience and it is top tier. This will be very long, by the way.
Okay, Suwa is very interesting. He has such a nuanced characterization that is mostly conveyed through a lot of indirect channels--conversations with other characters, a singular flashback iirc, and these lingering asides when no one else is around. It makes him such a fun character and also really difficult to get a handle on. If I were to boil him down to a set of simple character traits, I'd go with principled, jaded, and kind.
So, did you notice? Suwa's story always revolves around a young female figure. The first person who gets him to both literally and figuratively take his mask off is Akesato, the fifteen-year-old prostitute in episode 4. The person he develops the deepest connection to is the vampire girl, Ayame, at the end, who he eventually ends up taking under his wing on the boat.
(ty @nocandnc for reminding me of her name!!)
To everyone else in the anime, Suwa is closed off at best and antagonistic at worst (this is slightly different in the manga though, fun fact--he gets a lot of scenes with Takeuchi).
Tumblr media
And I think this is just such a clever way to characterize Suwa. I can't remember how much this is discussed in the anime, but we learn that Suwa had a little sister.
There's this extremely painful manga panel where he's getting turned by a whole pack of vampires, and he's covered in blood on a boat, and yet all he's looking at is the crouched figure of a little girl. And before the vampires can get her, he tosses her overboard and cries for her to swim, to live.
Tumblr media
And this is the core of Suwa's character. He protects children, and he's defined by having his last act as a human be to protect his little sister. He doesn't even know if she survived.
Which, you know, in a pretty masterful demonstration of "take a positive character trait to its extreme, resulting in a flaw," means he kills child vampires. He doesn't want them to experience how terrible and scary it is to be a child vampire--save them from his fate. It's a pretty brilliant example of character growth when he decides he's going to spare Ayame and instead take care of her, going from a lone wolf into a real protector.
(She's an anime-only character, and I think her existence adds a lot to Suwa's arc.)
Like!! Look at this man!! He cares about kids!!
Tumblr media
^^ Those are hands capable of great violence (as we see in the rest of the show) and yet he's gently guiding this vampire kid to a safe distance from Kurusu. I'm in my feelings about it.
And here, in this scene--he comforts Ayame with the blunt kindness that Suwa is known for. Because he's been in her position.
Tumblr media
I also want to mention how Suwa, despite being so adamant that vampires aren't human, spends a lot of time watching plays and watching singers and being around human society. This is a guy who's seen the worst of humanity in his 300-odd years of being a vampire, and yet he chooses to enjoy the best parts of us.
And he wants to be a part of that.
Tumblr media
It's also pretty significant that despite having seen the worst of us, he's still voluntarily part of a military squad protecting humans.
They might talk a lot about how it's mandatory for vamps to join because otherwise you'll be killed, but it's Suwa. He's been around for 300 years, dodging other vampires and vamp-hunters. They can't make him do anything.
I love Suwa because he doesn't act nice. He's cold, standoffish, kind of an asshole half the time. See this panel:
Tumblr media
He values competency and won't wait for you to catch up. But Kurusu gets it right, what kind of person he is:
Tumblr media
...He's also a little bit crazy, which is valid, considering what happened to him.
Tumblr media
And batshit funny. (Hehe. Get it? Bats? Cuz he's- yeah okay sorry)
Tumblr media
On a more serious note, I also feel like Suwa is characterized by a lot of regrets. This man carries a lot of guilt, and a lot of memories. In thhe manga, he says about Akesato:
I should've sang her a song...
And then gets Takeuchi to teach him how to sing (he's not good at it, but he's trying). It's...thoughtful. And telling about what sort of person Suwa is.
Anyway, I'm going to end this with my favorite panel of Suwa from the manga, which sums up a lot of his character development in both the anime and manga. His last lines in both adaptations are also pretty telling, I think. In the anime, it's:
Want to go see the "new world" together for a change of pace?
It signifies his willingness to change and to grow, having been wandering Japan for his whole life.
And in the manga?
