A Gift to the Gods...
This rare Roman bronze jug was recovered from a river to the south of Glasgow. The handle is decorated with a female figure holding a bird in her right hand. It may have been made in Italy in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD and was intended for use at the dining table. It was probably brought to Scotland by an important officer or official and then passed to a high ranking local who, in a common Celtic practice, took it to a river to sacrifice it to the gods.
