It should be a way bigger deal some other party figured out how to construct their own version of shimmer, and by some other party, I mean Noxus.

The only person who had access to new shimmer was Lest, and Lest's people belong to a branch of the vastaya that live within Noxus' territory.

The most worrying aspect of this version of shimmer is that it's been modified to create tattoos on its users.
We've already seen Viktor's own experiments with runes and shimmer in the first season.
And now we know from the Ambessa book that not only are rune tattoos a real thing that mages use to modify their magic in Mel and Rudo's case, but the Black Rose is also actively trying to create their own rune warriors out of mages AND non-mages. In fact Jinx’s shimmer altered body shares a lot of similar abilities as the rune warriors in the book, right down to the super speed, enhanced strength, and improved endurance, with side effects more reminiscent of the chemtank soldiers.
This kind of development is such neat twist to the finale, because it all comes back to what Ambessa said, "weapons cannot be unmade and they are always used". Piltover may have forcefully dearmed Zaun from its shimmer and even put it's own hextech on the back burner, but that isn't the end. The arms race is still going on, Piltover's just put itself and Zaun out of commission.
#arcane#arcane meta#viktor arcane#mel medarda#ambessa: chosen of the wolf#league of legends#lol#once again sad Silco’s dead but now bcuz i can't see him be a huge terror about the Black Rose violating his shimmer patent#wud love to see him and leblanc be absolute nightmares in court#lest arcane#it's also kind of newt that a lot of this tech was being developed in parallel of each other which is often the case with tech breakthrough#imagine jayce at runeterran UN giving a speech on the dangers of hextech and shimmer#and the Noxian/Ixtali delegates applaud at the end like “YES! WE NEED ALL OF THAT RIGHT NOW!”

Writing prompt for humans discovering a planet inhabited by an alien civilization, but both us and them being completely unable to travel to each other - due to, you know, physics - and instead becoming interstellar pen palls via other types of signalling.
#With current tech it'd take us literally tens of thousands of years to reach even the nearest star#Like we would need an absolute breakthrough in our understanding of the nature of physics to improve this in any way#But maybe you could do some crap with using light to signal each other? I dunno. It'd still take centuries to reach relatively nearby stars

The roots of the industry’s mindset are visible all throughout the prequel btw — it’s a very common theme that the higher-ups absolutely hate that they can’t justify ‘disciplining’ antagonist because he’s just that good — they can’t afford to lose him. Which means pretty much as soon as they can, things come to a head in a catastrophic way
#antagonists career ending accident wasn’t preplanned or anything#but the consequences he faced were FAR more harsh than they would’ve been if there hadn’t just been breakthroughs in connective tech#big fuckin robots and stuff

oh i would love to hear about syzygy and jj 👀👀👀👀 and in case you’re like me and want to talk about OCs but don’t know where to start, i’ll ask a more specific question: what are they to each other, how did they meet and what’s their relationship?
aaaaaaaaaaa ok!!!!
so syzygy's real name is elena, syzygy is her superhero name. she and jj are half siblings! elena is 17, jj is 27, and they hadn't met and barely knew about each other until their mom died. jj came to the funeral and instead of having to worry about the logistics of elena being a minor w/out a guardian, he stepped in to fill that spot for the year. elena is working on senior year of high school...part 2. she ended up having to repeat senior year bc she was the sole caretaker for her mom in her final year, which meant her grades fell completely by the wayside. she skipped a year of school when she was younger but then repeated the last one so she might as well have not skipped. oh well
jj is...trying his best! he's trying to be a good brother and he's doing pretty well at it, but it's hard to find work and elena is looking at colleges and money is hard and he doesnt necessarily have a stable career, he does a lot of odd jobs and free-lancing but. listen. villain henchman gigs pay pretty well... he'll just do a couple here and there. nothing serious. no one has to know
elena is really into physics and engineering and she's been interning at a research lab that's working on developing hardlight tech. [at an unspecified point with an unspecified driving motivation] she steals the tech and incorporates it into a suit, giving her the ability to form hardlight platform projections she can use to. well not fly. but run across in the sky, so it's kinda flying if you squint! and also she can form it into weapons (which she's not very good at) and use it as a shield. she's still ironing out the kinks on using more than one of those at once. eventually the head researcher at the lab makes the connection between elena and the newly debuted syzygy using their tech and confronts elena. they end up teaming up for a bit, the researcher helping to really refine things and train elena
but also uh-oh, the researcher is a minor villain working under a (so far undiscovered) mastermind villain and steals the suit just as elena realizes this. elena is left powerless to stop things just as she's realized the scope of the plot & also gotten used to being able to DO something. insert more contrivances i havent ironed out yet where the only way to stop the researcher involves melding with the hardlight tech itself as opposed to interfacing w/ it through a suit and she loses that defined line between elena and syzygy, which is not something she would have agreed to do if you had asked her before things got dire
and of course there's also a confrontation that happens somewhere in all that mess where some henchman have an injured syzygy backed into a corner but then syzygy looks up and there's jj, and he realizes it's her as they lock eyes, and he throws the fight so she can escape safely but it's quite a blow for syzygy who didn't need more trust issues
anyway that's the basic gist of those 2, there's also multiple more heroes in this verse (including twins sophie & hardy ware, aka software and hardware, who are very diy hacker (for soph) and gadgetry (for hardy). they are horrible teenagers with a main motivation of creating chaos and i love them) but also a lot of them belong to my roommate martin and idk all of their details. i need to sit down and actually Create Tangible Things to point to for this verse bc it's captivated me for like a year now but. as im sure u realized reading this word vomit, it's not at all fully developed yet. but i love them anyways
ALSO! syzygy playlist || jj playlist
#CIARA THANK U ily ;-;#they're my lil guys....#i have some mock up heroforges for a couple of my heroes but heroforge is such trash for superheroes#tho they DID add two hero masks. they're not great. but they DO exist#did i have a tag for this verse? idk#superheroverse#the setting is just slightly futuristic. on the verge of some big tech breakthroughs that will put them fully into that futuristic vibe#but not quite there yet#after the first year or so (when all of the above takes place) syzygy ends up working with a team of (mostly slightly younger) heroes#she becomes kind of the leader which is fucked up bc she doesnt know what she's doing ever at all but she can pretend ig#lmao this was long oops. what can i say. i like them#thanks for the ask!#ciara tag

For those still under the impression that these things are like revived dire wolves, or having the Jurassic Park debate about it (irrelevant here in this case as frangipani-wanterlust points out), please see these videos below for an actual breakdown of why these things are NOT dire wolves, why this ISN'T "de-extinction".

Editing to add Hank's additional video (below) which goes into detail on more points, responds to comments/questions, and corrects a point:
So no, the finding is not that e.g., jackals are closer to dire wolves genetically, the truth is that jackals are probably equally as close to dire wolves as grey wolves, genetically-speaking. You are just as likely to having a dire wolf that looks like a large jackal, or a dhole, or an African painted dog, as you are to having a dire wolf that looks like a grey wolf. The actual look of a dire wolf would largely be dictated by its environment in which case it is speculated to be that they look like big strong dholes or something similar. The point still stands that using grey wolves as the base is mostly due to being similar in size and also because they're flashier, and Colossal is capitalising off the popularity of Game of Thrones. That's all.

the "dire wolves are no longer extinct" stuff is gonna be the most annoyingly persistent science misinformation for the next decade at least
#5/20 of the gene edits were about coat colour so. yeah#they also cited elon fucking must as inspiration#also predictably it has given more license to the bullshit that anti-science fuckheads in government and tech bros say about how#supposedly we dont need to stop climate change and extinctions in general because we can just “bring them back” like#please be fucking serious. and yes i KNOW they would say that anyway but this is giving them license to flash around “see? science agrees!”#using misinformation to gather funding is not a good means to an end btw#appealing to tech bros will never give scientists what they want#even hank points out strongly that this shit is really frustratingly concealing that all these “breakthroughs” were publicly funded#in a time when the US government is viciously attacking science and stripping grants. this is NOT the way#there are soo many things wrong with this marketing stunt and all the bullshit that's leaking into people's misunderstanding of science now#Youtube

It's Not Over Till It's Over
Carl and I had front-row seats (well, sofa seats) for the Sweet Sixteen showdown: #3 Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. the #11 Arkansas Razorbacks. Now, I’m a faithful fan — until I’m not. From the git-go, it felt like David versus Goliath… except Goliath was wearing Razorback red, blocking every shot and grabbing every rebound. Behind our basket? A rowdy Razorback student section who screamed like…
