My local battletech group is doing a random custom mech free for all, and in order to make things spicy, I've opened up the techmanual to pike around the guts of the BV formula to make something as dumb as possible. I've got a hard 2100 bv limit and I think I managed to make something
Tumblr media
Behold! Coming in at exactly 2100 BV, the Wallfacer! You know how expensive ERPPCs can be BV-wise? Well, what if you mounted one backwards to discount all your other torso mounted guns? Oh, it also adds discounts a second time 'round because it's a huge fuckin heat hog and it means *technically* if it were to fire it and every other weapon while jumping it'd have problems, but because it's going the wrong direction it probably won't.
As for the game plan, the armor gives it away- the Wallfacer is a pair of bad hellbringers stapled together. Going forward it has a bunch of missiles and accurate efficient lasers to sandblast the enemy appart, going backward it has a big, long range 'fuck you' gun to snipe with. Advance to a firing position ass-first, dome the enemy with the particle cannon a couple of times, and then flip around to finish with the rest of the guns. Hopefully splitting damage between the front and rear arcs will make up a bit for the thin rear armor but it does mean you can get double tapped by your own main gun with that isXLFE.
I don't expect this to perform well oerse but if someone pulls it it'll be funny

might fuck around and buy the TechManual so I can at least put my 100-ton ClanTech LAM on paper
also, do not ask, all I know is it's a 100-ton ClanTech LAM, probably some Society nonsense, almost certainly their equivalent to the Matar but they actually made their oversized murder machine somewhat capable

The C3 diagram is very goofy but it's basically just a way of showing how the network rules work in practice- for each number of master computers in the 'central master' unit they show the largest network it is possible to create. You can 'prune' the network down from there as you please so long as you don't have both master computers and slave computers on the same connection hierarchy level. Or you can just be a smooth-brained blakist and just have to count to 6.
Tumblr media
The fact that the BV cost is buried deep in the techmanual and not at all mentioned in Total Warfare is maliciously stupid. In general when I run nets I keep it to 3 units- anything more and the tax becomes overbearing to use.
So, I just learned that C³ networks are actually WAY more complicated than I thought. Namely, that it costs BV to actually link them. And also maybe how you can link them? There's an upper limit of 12 linked units. But also like, it can only be in one of four configs? I think? Can I designate two separate networks with one double C³M unit? Why is it so complicated and obtuse? (Because it's battletech)

Some of you in the community have been asking about my background. I served 8 years in the Navy. Worked as an engineer in the engine room. Monitor, maintained and calculated various equations for our boiler system. At 19, I started creating tech manuals to train sailors from new to old on our procedures on how to use various equipment from our boiler, engine, electric generators, water desalination system, and much more. Worked for a digital entertainment agency for 10 years. Involved with building websites, creating content, SEO, digital marketing, email newsletters, and graphic design. We built websites, brochures, and online marketing for top hospitals like Columbia University Medical Center, Beth Israel hospital and more. Medical doctors in skincare, infectious medicine, ENT, and much more. Some of our other clients included top NY lawyers. I helped create an educational system to train new employees and college interns. We realized quickly that colleges didn't teach anyone how to code properly, how to use Photoshop to build website designs and didn't teach proper SEO techniques in content writing. I compiled videos and text from photography, videography, content, IT, SEO, design, coding, and so much more into one internal system. We also implemented a library check out system into the training program. We had 400+ books on our shelves. At my last job, I worked for 3 years at another digital agency. Our main focus was hospitals, doctor's and nurses. One of the things that we provided outside of the normal day to day social media and website marketing was an educational plug-in to educate our client's customers. With our CBD.how plug-in we used the same concept but with new technology. Education has always been my background. Much love to everyone. I hope this helps those who have been asking. Okay, after consulting the techmanual I think I know what's happening here. It's not a MMLab moment, just an edge case that the rules were never meant to cover. This is the table that you use to generate an ASF's engine:
Tumblr media
I'm assuming that the HumbleBee is an ASF, not a conventional fighter, so let's plug the HumbleBee's tonnage and safe thrust into that first formula to get its engine rating:
Tumblr media
Ah. That would do it.
This thing has an engine rating of 0. The engine table starts at 10. There is no engine price because there is no engine (Note that the summary doesn't give a weight for the engine either). This of course is an illegal design under the techmanual rules (did the program give you the "illegal design" quirk or was that applied manually?), but that's probably beside the point.
Tumblr media
Still no idea why the laser is invisible though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well. Folks we did it! We beat the Savannah Master for cost! It just took Patented engine technology. Top secret, you know the deal. For just 517,881 C-Bills you too can own a HumbleBee. A flying Medium Laser with 1 ton of armor and 1 ton of fuel, that moves...at a speed :D
Yeah so real-talk, this thing is all KINDS of fucked up. Something about being just 5 tons, makes the engine calculation have a stroke and just...Not.
Tumblr media
MegaMekLab moment I guess?
Also the laser in the nose is Invisible

After looking at my copy of TechManual, I realized I made a mistake when designing the Red Roc. Somehow I never knew was that the heatsinks added outside a mech to get it to the required 10 did not cost you any tonnage. Up until now I always assumed that those heat sinks cost tonnage, so the Red Roc is actually one ton underweight.
To fix this, I need to make a slight edit to the design. Instead of having a heat sink in the head, I'm using the freed up tonnage to place one heat sink in each leg. It should help with some of the Red Roc's heat issues a little. If I ever get around to uploading an actual mechsheet for the Red Roc, this will be taken into account.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I had a much better response to the Red Roc, I decided some more information was in order. Still using old drawings, as I haven't had time to draw anything new. I want to update the design a bit to match both my own drawing style and the newer catalyst designs (if possible).
The Red Roc was my first serious attempt of designing a battlemech of my own. I chose to start with my favorite weight, 45 tons, and try and build a mech that was useful at any range while being simple and cheap. I have yet to test enough to know if I accomplished my stated objectives, but I think I've at least made a good start.
================Technical Stuff======================
RDR-C Structure: Standard (4.5t) Engine: STD 225 (10t) Gyro: Standard (3t) Cockpit: Standard (3t) Armor: Standard 6t H: 8 // LT: 10-5 RT: 10-5 \\ LA :8 || CT: 12-8 || RA: 8 LL: 10 RL:10 Equipment: Autocannon/5 RT 4s 8t Ammo (AC/5) 20 RT 1s 1t Large Laser LA 2s 5t SRM 4 CT 1s 2t Ammo (SRM) 25 CT 1s 1t Small Laser LT 1s 0.5t Heat Sink H 1s 1t
================Designer's Notes====================
Well, not much to add here. I know that the Red Roc has several short comings. One that I left in for lore/fluff reasons is the CT SRM ammo. It's stuck in there because the designers couldn't figure out a way to have the SRMs loaded from one of the side torsos without having to take away from the Red Roc's waist structure. Prototypes that tried this would eventually overstress the waist and cause it to collapse, causing the 'mech to slump to that side. If the 'mech was in motion at the time of failure, it would sometimes to cause the mech to split in two at the waist. It was determined that keeping the ammo bin in the CT would have to suffice until the waist structure could be reworked.
Even with all this failing, and all the others, I think this mech is a great base for upgrades. I have probably a dozen different ideas, and I wouldn't mind hearing yours as well. Have fun with my design, I'll defiantly be bringing more to the table (as well as updating the Red Roc's art)

Note
The construction rules for the Voig Sig specifically state that it can't be mounted on a mech that also mounts any C3 system, which Nova probably qualifies as. Even if it doesn't, the Nova system is an ECM suite and Void Sig's rules also disable "any effect" of onboard ECM units, which in this case would include all the other functions of the CEWS
This is a perennial problem with battletech books, that construction and game rules are split up in such a way that important gameplay implications are overlooked (for instance, assault battle armor is categorically incapable of mechanizing onto omnimechs but this is only spelled out in the techmanual). Gets made worse by the fact that Nova CEWS is a dead end edge case piece of tech buried in the back of the advanced scenario book that the BT community on tumblr has really, really latched onto. Mechfactory is basically the worst of the mechlab programs (SSW and MegaMekLab are just better) but all of them begin to struggle with accurately emulating the rules once you get into weeds of level 4 experimental tech, in no small part because the rules kinda stop existing at those edges
Tumblr media
This is one of the most expensive mechs I've ever made but I think it might actually work since you can alternate firing and charging the arms to remain heat neutral or you could fire one one PPC and the large laser if you wanted to turn on the void sig system.
What do you think?
HOLY WEAPON HEAT BATMAN
...yeah I suppose that would work. The engine heat though... is that all sinked?
This is terrifying. Do not want to fight thus thing.

It would require the computer to be equipment that weighs nothing and pccupies no crit slots but technically exists on the "base" config of the mech, for one
Mind, the targetting computer in general is a deeply abstracted piece of tech. It's represented by a single blob of crits but per the techmanual It's a distributed mass of stabilizers, gyros, and accuator enhancements tied to the computer to physically achieve the extra weapon precision that are where most of the extra weight and space is getting used.
…why isn’t the Warhawk’s targeting computer just fixed equipment?
Seems like a waste of an OmniPod if they’re going to equip every variant with one.
