✩🏞️🎶Review: I think it is safe to say that I am addicted to Zapata slow burns. “All Rhodes Lead Here” is the third book that I have read by Mariana Zapata and I LOVED it so much!!  I really enjoyed exploring the wilderness through Aurora’s perspective. The hikes that she took through Pagosa Springs were so descriptive and the beautiful imagery made me feel as though I was venturing through the forest with her. I totally understand why Rhodes chose to be a fish and game warden in that area, which is a pretty cool job occupation if I might add. Another aspect I loved about the book was the relationship development between Aurora and Rhodes. The two start out as strangers, Aurora being Rhodes’ tenant, and become friends over time. When the pair begin to feel attraction for one another near the end of the novel, Rhodes does not rush anything. I think that this is so important considering Aurora experiences a lot of trauma stemming from her previous relationship. Rhodes gave Aurora the space she needed to figure out what she wanted. At the same time, he was only a call away she ever needed a bear hug, emphasizing the importance of strong support systems.  Rhodes, as a character, is just a big sweetheart. I love how protective he is of Aurora. When Aurora got lost on one of the trails, he abandoned his post to search for her, later taking care of her injuries when they returned home.  Rhodes’ love for his son is unmatched. He did not have to be present in Amos’ life (Rhodes served as a sperm donor for his best friend and his wife) but CHOSE to be involved anyway. He CHOSE not to re-enlist, even though he found joy in serving his country, so that he did not have to miss out on any of his son’s “first times.” Amos’ family may be unconventional (with three parents and all), but he is loved nonetheless. The representation of nontraditional families in literature is so important and I appreciate Zapata making that a highlight of this book.

Tala Ghigau Dakila

Born on November 17, 1979 (she’s 40 but looks 30, and the story takes place in 2019), she is half-Filipino and half-Native American. Her parents are Hanan Dakila and an unnamed Native American father. She is a Spirit Detective who has the Filipino pre-colonial goddess Dalikamata as her patron. Dalikamata is the goddess of health and eyes. Tala has a 3rd eye that she uses to see ghosts, spirits, demons, you name it. By day, she is a regular Detective at the New Amsterdam Police Department.

She smokes. A lot. She rolls her own cigarettes at home, and if she isn’t at home, she always brings her vape-pen.

Theo Frödeson

Born on July 15, 1999 to Hilda Bjorndottir and Fröde Karlsson, he is pure Norweigian. Officially he’s just Tala’s tenant and godson. But he’s so much more than that to her. Their relationship is a mixture of motherly love, sibling-like love, and just plain old friendship. He eventually becomes a Spirit Detective, just like her, with a certain God Of Mischief as his patron. By day, he’s just your average college student, Majoring in Criminology, and Minoring in Folkloristics.

George Edward Davies (Eddie for short)

He was born on April 10, 1970 to George and Eliza Davies in Abington, Oxfordshire. This fully Englishman is what we call a Sentinel. Now, a Sentinel is someone who protects a mythical creature from their culture, which they have to tame. If you can’t tame your mythical creature, you can still look after and preserve your mythical creature in numerous reserves around the world, like the Mariana Trench, certain parts of Papua New Guinea, and others. The reason Sentinels do what they to is to preserve and protect their cultural creatures. Edward’s creature is a Two-Legged Dragon, also called a Wyvern. His name is Barty.

The compost hotline is just a phone number but it is also a network of gardens, an imaginary friend and an always-developing informal online collab space where artists, gardeners and community organizers can temporarily freeze the flow of the internet (spirit net) to reflect and share research, personal archives, or the 2am–4am late-night google unconscious. It is meant as an alternative to death for precious trans liminal space, digital scraps, not-to-be-forgotten embodiments, or otherwise entombed hard drive materials. Vivienne Bessette (b. 1982) is a queer settler & interdisciplinary artist whose ancestry ties them to Ireland, Croatia, France, and the Metis settlements of Cayer, MB, and Red River. Bessette incorporates drawing, painting, woodworking, sculpting, dying, writing, fermenting and building relationships with plants into their practice. They work in and out of the studio, the garden and the kitchen, developing sustainable and alternative modes of food production and utilizing unconventional materials. The strength of entangled and interdependent community is at the stomach of Bessette’s process. Bessette holds a BFA from Simon Fraser University. They have been involved with multiple garden and food-based collectives, including Commons Garden at Sahalli Park Community Garden, Garden Don’t Care, Looking at the Garden Fence, and the project What artists bring to the table for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria with Derya Akay and Kurtis Wilson. Bessette was a Food Coordinator for Slow Waves Small Projects on Mayne Island. They have been published in The Capilano Review (“Pattern of Pears,” 2020 and “Organize Your Building with the Support of the Vancouver Tenants Union with the Belvedere Residents,” 2018). They live and work on the stolen and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səlí̓lwətaʔɬ Nations.

- I'm acc a bit displeased that the show tried to force this love triangle thing when Evan and Mariana have multiple seasons of history & love & hurt & complex feelings like Joaquin is just not able to evoke that level of emotion in her imo

- The premise of the Coterie is so revolutionary because look at how Luca's life has been impacted since he moved in, especially for Callie's help with his green card.

my god this episode was so tense. We can see that there are some struggles to get over in their marriage - namely the trouble over Mariana, and the last scene really sets the scene for the next episode. I didn't mind the canal/train stuff - it's giving context, following the diaries + making the world feel 'lived in' if that makes sense, of course Anne is responding and reacting especially with her stocks + her curious mind. (1)

I only wish the secondary plots (canals, coal, spy kids, thomas + pigs) were sometimes more streamlined in places - i'd rather dedicate an extra minute or two to the Annes or family dynamics, even like Marian and Ann gossiping or the Annes reading together or smth. I'm so nervous for the next episode - i think anne has a lot of loose ends to finally tie up, say goodbye to that chapter in her life + realise she is in fact in love with Ann, despite it not seeming like it (2)

I agree with everything you said! This episode was indeed very tense. I feel like they really wanna show us how the Ann(e)s’ marriage is and is gonna be seriously under threat for different reasons – how literally, in one way or another, no one wants them to be together. We have Mariana on one side, the tribe and Sutherland on the other + the tenants and the people from the town (Hardcastle now knowing about the Ann(e)s and the “Captain Lister” comment by Briggs which is gonna end up on the paper). I do really believe every story line will eventually end up playing a role in this overall arc. This is also why – even tho I’d love for the whole thing to be strictly focused on the Ann(e)s – I’m fine with all the other plots being established – they are needed to make us feel how high are the stakes for the Ann(e)s and really get the point across that their situation was far from easy.

Overall, I’m enjoying this second series a lot. This episode was full of stuff but it still had that more calm vibe that I love opposed to the hectic pace of the first episode.

Vivienne Bessette will host the poetry of ugly pickles: a compost related workshop centred around food, composting, and community resources. Using produce and materials gathered by Bessette, participants will garble/sort/arrange them into delicious and interesting pickles to take home.

We will be sharing resources about good grocery stores, where to get dollar bags of food, seconds, and “ugly” produce. If you have suggestions or ideas (a story about abundant summer fruit trees in the neighbourhood?) regarding community resources, share your thoughts at the workshop!

Materials for the workshop will be supplied, however participants are asked to bring a knife and cutting board if possible.

This event is presented in conjunction with Bessette’s exhibition Party line, on display at window and surrounding areas from January 28 to March 17, 2023.

About the artist:

Vivienne Bessette (b. 1982) is a queer settler & interdisciplinary artist whose ancestry ties them to Ireland, Croatia, France, and the Metis settlements of Cayer, MB, and Red River. Bessette incorporates drawing, painting, woodworking, sculpting, dying, writing, fermenting and building relationships with plants into their practice. They work in and out of the studio, the garden and the kitchen, developing sustainable and alternative modes of food production and utilizing unconventional materials. The strength of entangled and interdependent community is at the stomach of Bessette’s process. Bessette holds a BFA from Simon Fraser University. They have been involved with multiple garden and food-based collectives, including Commons Garden at Sahalli Park Community Garden, Garden Don’t Care, Looking at the Garden Fence, and the project What artists bring to the table for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria with Derya Akay and Kurtis Wilson. Bessette was a Food Coordinator for Slow Waves Small Projects on Mayne Island. They have been published in The Capilano Review (“Pattern of Pears,” 2020 and “Organize Your Building with the Support of the Vancouver Tenants Union with the Belvedere Residents,” 2018). They live and work on the stolen and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səlí̓lwətaʔɬ Nations.

Callie sighed softly, staring at her phone. Mariana finished doing her makeup, looking at her sister's reflection.

"What's with the long face?" She asked, facing her. Callie glanced up at her, brushing some hair back.

"(Y/N) says he's busy again." Callie said quietly, tossing her phone to the side and sighing. Mariana frowned, walking towards her and sitting down.

"Maybe he's working more." Mariana shrugged lightly. Callie sighed, biting her bottom lip.

"Come on, Callie. Get dressed cause the party's starting soon." Mariana gave her knee a squeeze, standing and checking her appearance one more time. Callie stood, getting dressed and applying some makeup. She heard the music start and people arriving. Callie picked up her phone, looking over the texts again before stepping out of her room and joining the tenants. She took the cup Mariana offered her. Her mind kept drifting, unable to find the want to get drunk and let loose. Callie placed her cup down, going back to her room. She called her boyfriend, closing the door to help lower the volume.

"Hey, what's up?" (Y/N) asked when he answered the phone. Callie swallowed, licking her lips.

"Hey, babe.. I.. I'm not enjoying this party." Callie chuckled as she sat on her bed. Her brows furrowed upon hearing the sound of a Disney movie in the background.

"Why?"

"There's this case I can't get my mind off." Callie lied quickly, licking her lips. (Y/N) hummed, shuffling coming from his end.

"I'll call you later. Mariana wants to do shots." Callie lied again, grabbing her purse. (Y/N) laughed softly.

"Okay, Cal. See you later." (Y/N) said before hanging up. Callie stood, ordering an uber to (Y/N)'s place. She left her room and the Coterie. She got in the uber, thoughts racing again. (Y/N)'s work wasn't related to Disney. It could've been used as background noise but it also meant (Y/N) was home. Callie got out of the car, approaching (Y/N)'s place and knocking. It took a moment before (Y/N) answered, brows raising.

"Hey, babe." He greeted, head tilting. "What brings you here?"

"I wasn't feeling well and the party is probably gonna go on until the morning so.." Callie trailed off. Her boyfriend nodded, letting her inside.

"Uhm, Callie.. I want you to meet Daniela." (Y/N) walked into the livingroom. Callie's brows furrowed, following him. She blinked, staring at the young child in a princess gown.

"Dani is my sister."

"The sister visiting family in North Coralina?" Callie looked at (Y/N), brows raised. (Y/N) nodded slowly.

"You didn't mention she was.. Five or six." Callie whispered, glancing at the little girl. Her eyes were glued to the tv, completely focused on Moana.

"I post about her on Instagram. In my defense, I thought you already knew. She's seven, not five or six." (Y/N) raised his hands. Callie sighed, licking her lips.

"I'm gonna shower." She mumbled. (Y/N) watched her walk away, plopping down on the couch. Daniela glanced back at her brother, standing and walking towards him. She sat beside him, fixing her tiara.

"Who was that?"

"My girlfriend?"

"Oh, the lawyer?" Daniela tilted her head. (Y/N) nodded, giving her a small smile. Daniela hummed, looking back at the tv. She sang along to the songs, getting up and dancing around. (Y/N) watched her, sighing softly. Callie returned, taking a seat next to him.

"My aunt likes to give me breaks at least four times a year. She'll either come here or have Dani travel with a friend over to her."

"You take care of her all by yourself?" Callie asked softly, head resting on his shoulder. (Y/N) nodded.

"We have no family here." (Y/N) reminded her. Callie frowned, arms wrapping around him. She watched Daniela, gaze softening.

"I'd be glad to watch her with you." Callie said softly. (Y/N) gave her a small smile, nodding. He pressed a kiss to her forehead, looking back at Daniela.

"I'll go make popcorn." (Y/N) said, standing and leaving the two girls alone. Callie cleared her throat, sitting up.

"I'm Callie." She gave her a smile. Daniela looked at her, giving a small wave.

"You like princesses, Daniela?" Callie tilted her head as she watched her. Daniela nodded, playing with the skirt of her gown. Callie smiled.

"You would be a very pretty princess." She cooed. Daniela giggled, walking to her toy chest and pulling out another tiara. She walked towards Callie, handing it to her. Callie put it on, chuckling.

"Am I pretty princess?" She asked. Daniela nodded, sitting on the floor and brushing her Barbie's hair as she watched the movie. (Y/N) returned with the popcorn, smiling when he noticed Callie's new accessory.
