New family of wheel-like metallic clusters exhibit unique properties

While the wheel does not need to be reinvented, there are benefits to the development of new nano-wheels, according to a multi-institute research team based in China. The group fabricated a novel family of metallic compounds, each of which exhibit unique properties desirable for next-generation technologies, such as advanced sensors.

Their findings were made available in Polyoxometalates.

"Polymetallic complexes are of great interest not only for their appealing molecular structure but also for their versatile applications in various fields," said co-corresponding author Yan-Zhen Zheng, professor in the Frontier Institute of Science and Technology (FIST) at Xi'an Jiaotong University.

Polymetallic complexes, which comprise multiple atoms of various metals or a combination of metals and other elements, have the potential to imbue materials with specific properties if the molecules can be synthesized, Zheng said. Such properties include the ability to fluoresce, or glow, and magnetic quirks that allow drastic temperature changes and control.

Hey how well does Tom Lehrer's elements song hold up today?

Well, I mean. It was written in 1959 when there were only 102 discovered elements as opposed to today's 118, so it's obviously no longer accurate to the modern periodic table.

But if you're asking about my opinions of it musically, then it's... fine. It's a parody of the Major General's Song. The melody is a bit of an earworm, but after a bit the lyrics just kinda blend into each other. Not much to say about it tbh.

I would say that it probably took him a while to put them in an order that fit the tune, but I feel like a lot of that work would get done simply by the fact that the vast majority of elements end in -ium so you don't have to think too hard to make everything rhyme. I kind of wish that there was a pattern to what he was grouping together, but it doesn't seem like there is one besides the occasional attempt at alliteration? If there is one, feel free to let me know, but I am, ironically enough, not a big science guy, so I wouldn't know.

I feel like at this point it's just a thing that people like to memorize as a party trick (not throwing shade btw I was infamous for memorizing digits of pi when I was in school).

So five seasons in, it seems that the Magma Titan was the Sun variant of Chert (blue) and Terbium (yellow) Guardians of the Gate as far as species / magical creature goes. Given the physical similarities between the Magma Titan and the barnacle bruiser we see pictured behind Finnegrin's chair, it's possible he could be an Ocean variant. Either that, or he's a magically conjured creature with no sapience (although it doesn't look like it, from the other glimpses we seemingly get of him in other screenshots).

Which just makes me more and more inclined than I already was to say that yes, the Magma Titan wasn't a monster; yes, they were a fully sapient Person to the degree that elves are; and yes, dark magic encouraged the dehumanization and murder of this person for organ harvesting purposes.
