It’s not a slashy show, but if you like watching really deep male friendships develop, you should absolutely watch Grantchester (2014-2025). The entire thing is brilliant.

"THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" (1997) Review
Tumblr media
"THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" (1997) Review
The year 1963 saw the release of Tony Richardson's Academy Award winning adaptation of Henry Fielding's 1749 novel, "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling". Another thirty-four years passed before another adaptation of the novel appeared on the scene. It turned out to be the BBC's five-episode miniseries that aired in 1997.
"THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" is a comic tale about the life and adventures of an English foundling, who is discovered in the household of a warm-hearted landowner in Somerset named Squire Allworthy. The latter adopts the child and Tom Jones grows up to be a lusty, yet kindly youth; who falls in love with one Sophia Western, the only child of Allworthy's neighbor, Squire Western. Tom is raised with the squire's nephew, a falsely pious and manipulative young man named Mr. Blifil. Because the latter is Allworthy's heir, Sophia's father wishes her to marry Mr. Blifil, so that the Allworthy and Western estates can be joined as one. Unfortunately for Squire Western and Mr. Blifil, Sophia is in love with Tom. And unfortunately for the two young lovers, Tom is discredited by Mr. Blifil and his allies before being cast away by Squire Allworthy. In defiance of Squire Western's wishes for her to marry Mr. Blifil, Sophia (accompanied by her maid, Honour) runs away from Somerset. Both Tom and Sophia encounter many adventures on the road to and in London, before they are finally reconciled.
Actually, there is a lot more to "THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING". But a detailed account of the plot would require a long essay and I am not in the mood. I have noticed that the 1997 miniseries has acquired a reputation for not only being a first-rate television production, but also being superior to the 1963 Oscar winning film. As a five-part miniseries, "THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" was able to adhere more closely to Fielding's novel than the movie. But does this mean I believe that the miniseries is better than the movie? Hmmmm . . . I do not know if I can agree with that opinion.
I cannot deny that "THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" is a well made television production. Director Metin Hüseyin did an excellent job of utilizing a first-rate production crew for the miniseries. Cinders Forshaw's photography was well done - especially in Somerset sequences featured in the miniseries' first half. Roger Cann's production designs captured mid-18th century England in great detail. And Rosalind Ebbutt's costumes designs were not only exquisite, but nearly looked like exact replicas of the fashions of the 1740s. The look and style of "THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" seemed to recapture the chaos and color of mid-18th century England.
"THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" could also boast some first-rate performances. The miniseries featured solid performances from the likes of Christopher Fulford and Richard Ridings as Mr. Blifil's allies, Mr. Square and Reverend Thwackum; Kathy Burke, who was very funny as Sophia's maid, Honour; Celia Imrie as Tom's London landlady, Mrs. Miller; Peter Capaldi as the lecherous Lord Fellamar; Tessa Peake-Jones as Squire Allworthy's sister Bridget and Benjamin Whitrow as the squire. The episode also featured solid turns from the likes of Kelly Reilly, Michelle Fairley, Camille Coduri, Matt Bardock, Roger Lloyd-Pack, and Sylvester McCoy. Max Beesley was solid as Tom Jones. He also had good chemistry with his leading lady, Samantha Morton, and did a good job in carrying the miniseries on his shoulders. However, I do feel that he lacked the charisma and magic of Albert Finney. And there were times in the miniseries' last two episodes, when he seemed in danger of losing steam.
But there were some performances that I found outstanding. Brian Blessed was deliciously lusty and coarse as Squire Western, Allworthy's neighbor and Sophia's father. I really enjoyed his scenes with Frances de la Tour, who was marvelous as Sophia's snobbish and controlling Aunt Western. Lindsay Duncan gave a subtle performance as the seductive Lady Bellaston. James D'Arcy was outstanding as Squire Allworthy's nephew, the sniveling and manipulative Mr. Blifil. Ron Cook gave the funniest performance in the miniseries, as Tom's loyal sidekick, Benjamin Partridge, who had earlier suffered a series of misfortunes over the young man's birth. Samantha Morton gave a superb performance as Tom's true love, Sophia Western. Morton seemed every inch the graceful and passionate Sophia, and at the same time, conveyed the strong similarities between the young woman and her volatile father. But the one performance I truly enjoyed was John Sessions' portrayal of author Henry Fielding. I thought it was very clever to use Sessions in that manner as the miniseries' narrator. And he was very entertaining.
The producers of the miniseries hired Simon Burke to adapt the novel for television. And I believe he did an excellent job. I cannot deny that the miniseries' running time allowed him to include scenes from the novel. Thanks to Burke's script and Hüseyin's direction, audiences were given more details on the accusations against Jenny Jones and Benjamin Partridge for conceiving Tom. Audiences also experienced Bridget Jones' relationship with her cold husband and the circumstances that led to the conception of Mr. Blifil. Judging from the style and pacing of the miniseries, it seems that Hüseyin was inspired by Tony Richardson's direction of the 1963 film. There were plenty of raunchy humor and nudity to keep a viewer occupied. More importantly, "THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" proved to be a fascinating comic epic and commentary on class distinctions, gender inequality and social issues.
However, I still cannot agree with the prevailing view that the miniseries is better than the 1963 movie. Mind you, the latter is not perfect. But the miniseries lacked a cinematic style that gave the movie a certain kind of magic for me. And due to Hüseyin and Burke's insistence on being as faithful to the novel as possible, the miniseries' pacing threatened to drag in certain scenes. The scenes featuring Tom and Partridge's encounter with an ineffectual highwayman, their viewing of a puppet show, and a good deal from the London sequences were examples of the miniseries' slow pacing. I could not help feeling that "THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING" could have easily been reduced to four episodes and still remain effective.
I also had a few problems with other matters. One, I never understood why Lady Bellaston continued her campaign to get Sophia married to Lord Fellamar, after Squire Western prevented the peer from raping his daughter. Why did she continued to make life miserable for Tom after receiving his marriage proposal . . . the same proposal that she rejected with contempt? And what led Sophia to finally forgive Tom for the incident with Mrs. Waters at Upton and his marriage proposal to Lady Bellaston? After he was declared as Squire Allworthy's new heir, Sophia refused to forgive Tom for his affair with Lady Bellaston. But the next shot featured Tom and Squire Allworthy returning to Somerset . . . and being greeted by Sophia, along with hers and Tom's children. WHAT HAPPENED? What led Sophia to finally forgive Tom and marry him? Instead of explaining or hinting what happened, Burke's script ended on that vague and rather disappointing note.
But despite my problems with "THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING", I cannot deny that I found it very enjoyable. Director Metin Hüseyin and screenwriter Simon Burke did a first-rate job in bringing Henry Fielding's comic opus to life. They were ably assisted by an excellent production staff and fine performances from a cast led by Max Beesley and Samantha Morton.

Character ask: Mary Bennet (Pride & Prejudice)
Favorite thing about them: She's funny. Her pretentious would-be intellectualism and her attempts to show off her "wisdom" and "talents" create humor whenever she appears.
Least favorite thing about them: Her pompous insensitivity when Lydia runs off with Wickham. When her whole family is facing the threat of permanent disgrace, her response is to quote Frances Burney's Evelina and preach a sermon about female virtue.
Three things I have in common with them:
*I sometimes try to seem smarter than I really am.
*I like books and music. (For their own merit, though, not because they make me "accomplished.")
*I'm often insecure about my looks.
Three things I don't have in common with them:
*I'm not a middle child.
*I'm not preachy. (At least I don't mean to be.)
*I don't play the piano.
Favorite line:
“Pride is a very common failing, I believe. By all that I have ever read, I am convinced that it is very common indeed; that human nature is particularly prone to it, and that there are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self-complacency on the score of some quality or other, real or imaginary. Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.”
brOTP: Mr. Collins, if they had the chance to be real friends, since he probably has the most in common with her of all the characters.
OTP: The clerk that Austen wrote she would eventually marry.
nOTP: Any member of her family.
Random headcanon: She's allergic to feathers. This is a completely random headcanon, with no basis in Austen's writing, based on the slapstick gag in the Wishbone episode "Furst Impressions" where Caroline Bingley's gaudy feathered headdress makes Mary sneeze when they first meet. That Wishbone episode was my childhood introduction to Pride and Prejudice.
Unpopular opinion: She's not unfairly discriminated against because she's a nerd. She's not mocked for being socially awkward; she's mocked for being a pretentious, annoying know-nothing-know-it-all. Now, this doesn't mean we can't sympathize with her; after all, the reason why she puts so much effort into being "intellectual" and "accomplished" is to make up for her homely looks in a society where only marriage can secure her future, and she's a showoff because otherwise she would always be ignored in favor of her pretty sisters. Nor does it mean her father's dismissive attitude toward her isn't mean-spirited, or that she doesn't deserve to be viewed with more sympathy and depth in new adaptations and fics. But it's okay that she's a comic character, and it wasn't "internalized misogyny" on Austen's part to make her one. I don't headcanon her as being on the autism spectrum either: I understand why other people do, but to me at least, her stilted, verbose way of speaking seems cultivated to show off her intellect, not natural. (I don't mind when anyone else headcanons her as autistic, though.)
Song I associate with them: None at the moment.
Favorite pictures of them:
Tessa Peake-Jones in the 1980 miniseries:

Lucy Briers in the 1995 miniseries:

Talulah Riley in the 2005 film:

04x47 - Digging Up The Past
Bob Cryer is in attendance at a local building site as a body has been found in what used to be the back garden of a row of terraces. The foreman wants it moving quickly so he can lay a drain. Bob is using it as an excuse to be away from the station after his son has been accused of death by dangerous driving (see Outmoded)
Ted is wondering where the hell Bob is because he needs to charge Patrick. Mike thinks he should forget Bob and charge the boy but Ted refuses to because Shirley (Bob's wife and Patrick's mum) is there with him on her own. Derek comes down to see if Patrick has been charged yet.
Bob asks for CID to attend and refuses to allow them to continue around the area of the skeleton. The foreman is angry because the company is already on a delay clause and any further problems or delays will cost thousands. "Not my problem." Bob shrugs. They argue about holding up work for a few bones and Bob shouts back that it could be a murder so to give it a rest.
Derek tells Ted to charge Patrick and he refuses to until Bob arrives. They've already been waiting 45 minutes. Derek tells him he purposely arranged Bob's duty so he could be available when Patrick was due in and he obviously doesn't want to be present to see him charged so he orders Ted to charge the boy and let them move on.
Christine and Viv arrive after hearing Bob request CID over the air. Christine tries to encourage him to return to the station to be there as Patrick is charged. He snaps at Viv for moving closer to have a look at the skeleton and - chastened - leaves the scene after telling Viv not to let any female officers - of any rank - near the body. "I've never seen him like that before." Viv tells Christine.

Pete, complete with sunglasses, drives to an underground carpark where Taffy wanted to meet him before shift. He sold him tickets that turned out to be fake as 50 other people had tickets for the same pair of seats. Pete claims innocence.Taffy wants his money back but Pete tells him he'll take him to someone who knows where to find the man who sold him them in the first place before word gets out about him doing two policemen over.
Bob arrives at the station just as Tom finishes charging Patrick. He refuses to take them home and so Tom arranges for a pool car to do so. Derek asks why he won't take them home and Bob responds that he's going back out on the street. Ted doesn't understand. "He's your son, for God's sake!" and Bob shouts at him to leave it alone.
Tumblr media
One of the site workers starts to try fill the area in with a digger. Mike orders him to stop but he ignores him and continues trying to fill it only stopping when Mike opens the door and threatens to arrest him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pete takes Taffy to meet 'Albert', a ticket tout he knows. He mocks Pete for buying from a 'street corner seller' and not himself and Pete says he charges an arm and a leg. Albert has at least four phones in front of him so it must be a profitable business! He takes a call in front of them to arrange Broadway musical tickets for a grand - £2.7K now. Pete tells him he wants a name of his reseller.
Derek asks for an unofficial off the record chat about Patrick. He asks Bob what he can't come to terms with and why he keeps giving his domestic life the cold shoulder. Bob refuses to drop the formalities and remains almost stood to attention throughout. Derek tells him no crime was intended but Bob says that is no comfort to Janice Finch's family and it's still a criminal offence. Bob says he will deal with it but in his own way in his own time. Derek insists the time is right now. Bob won't be moved however and Derek has to tell Shirley that there's no point in prolonging the agony by waiting for Bob, he won't give in. Shirley murmurs, knowing how headstrong her husband is. She tells him he won't even talk about it at home.
Tumblr media
The foreman tries to bribe Mike who won't have any of it. SOCO arrive and it's a friend of Viv's played by Tessa Peake Jones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ted has arranged for an archaeologist from the museum to also go down and have a look at the bones. "Yeah? He can have a look at some of my staff whilst he's there." Frank snarks.
On initial inspection, the SOCO suspects foul play as there's a hole in the skull. The foreman claims it could have been done by the digger. She shakes her head and the foreman walks off, saying he's going to get the site moving one way or the other. Viv and Mike try to hide their smirks, thanking her for playing along to give them time for the professor to arrive and date the bones.
Ted wants taking off the investigation into Patrick Cryer due to being closely involved as Bob's friend but Frank refuses. Pete takes the info on forged tickets up to CID and interrupts them. Before they can turn the printers over, Mike calls and asks for back up from both CID and Uniform as things are turning nasty at the site.
As Uniform arrive, Mike is literally dragging the worker from earlier off the digger before he can get back in and fill in the hole. He's already cuffed one to it and there's a full on riot starting in the mud as it's raining heavily. Mike's designer suit must be loving it! One of the workers goes for Viv with a spade and she ends up falling in a trench only for Ted to literally leap on the mans back!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The work will definitely be delayed now!
Tumblr media
The bones have been dated and are at least 300 years old. It appears Mike spun his line further and upset the line manager by making out it could be at least 2 weeks until they could start work again and he forbade them to remove 2 of their vehicles from the site to another site. That's what kicked everything off. (It's slightly more understandable now as they wouldn't have been paid for not working during that time, especially as the company is already having to pay a penalty for delays which would have increased if at least 2 weeks had had to be added on it. Add in that they likely had London lodgings to pay for as well as food and drink. They didn't know he was bulling them up!) Frank: "You're a berk, Michael." The foreman turns up a little while later and tells them that if they had another completion delay the company would fold and the men would all have been laid off. It's no wonder they were fighting as they were (not that they were right trying to hide the skeleton after calling the police in the first place! But Mike over egged the pudding! I'm really not liking Mike this series) Frank tells the foreman that he'll charge the men with obstruction and then bail them to appear in court in the morning - as long as they all plead guilty - so they can return to work. He reminds them to do as he's told next time the police tell him to down tools. "I'm too soft, y'know that?"
Pete has made 5 phone calls to assorted police speciality departments and none of them are interested in potential ticket fraud. Jim returns and even he isn't interested which leaves Pete and Taffy to do it themselves. They head over in Pete's car. Pete claims that they're only going to 'look' and not take things further. Unless they find a convenient window open so they can get in without having to worry about a search warrant. They manage to get inside and find assorted printing machines and drawers full of faked tickets. The phone rings so Pete answers and doesn't speak - the line goes dead.
Frank reminds Ted to wrap the case on Patrick up nice and tidy so there's no allegation in court that they took it easy on him because he's a policeman's son because it's what Bob would want. Bob comes in at the end and gets the wrong end of the stick and accuses them of talking about him. "I don't talk behind anyone's back." Frank growls, telling Bob some home truths, accusing him of treating his family like something on the bottom of his shoe because he thinks Patrick has let him down. He asks him what is more important, what people think or his family's welfare. Ted tells Bob that he knows Frank is right and suggests he goes home because Patrick and Shirley need his help and support.
Pete searches around for the plates that made the tickets up. In doing so he finds thousands of dollars of counterfeit money... just as the counterfeit currency squad arrive with a warrant and find them with handfuls of the stuff! The US Treasury man tells them they have just blown part 2 of the biggest US/UK counterfeit operation ever mounted and three months surveillance has been wasted.
Tumblr media
Pete and Taffy are told to leg it by the Chief Inspector of the squad before he has chance to think twice because they're not worth the paperwork.
The SOCO and archeologist continue working on the bones and discover that it's a plague pit that has special historical interest and means that there will be an injunction slapped on the building company. "Oh dear." Frank and Ted beam at each other.
Tumblr media
On his second attempt, Bob rings home and speaks to his son, telling him that he wants to have a talk.
