CW: Homophobia and Misogyny.
The Black Empire always had an heir. Someone to rightfully take the Company's leadership. The rightful owner of everything. President and Master of all the Empire.
Heirs were always found in the Black Blood. Pollux Black was the heir of his time, winning his cousin Artucus for being older, having more money and power. And when his father died, he became the owner of everything only at 26.
Cygnus Black, Pollux's first, was expected to take his place. He had done everything right. Got top marks in school, got top marks in Uni. He married a rich girl from an important French family. He was his father's rightful hand. But he failed in one thing: He wasn't capable of giving Pollux a male heir. Three beautiful daughters, he had. And he adored them. But they would have to grow up and marry some blokes. And their children would have other name. They couldn't be the heirs simply because the family company could not belong to another family. The Lestranges? The Malfoys? They were all after it. Shame Bellatrix wasn't a boy. She had the intelligence and the interest.
Alphard Black, Pollux's second, was a complete disappointment. He didn't want to marry. He refused to establish a family, give his father some heirs. He also was not interested in the company as he should. He lived to party and travel. He was a lazy man. Pollux got even more disappointed when Alphard died single and childless. All that he left were secrets. He turned out to be a homosexual. And his name was never mentioned by his father again.
It was a surprise and hope that his younger daughter, Walburga, got pregnant at nineteen. At first, it was a disappointment. She had no use for the company. Pollux wanted to send her away to marry someone important to make business with. But the pregnancy stopped those plans. Pollux was furious, willing to get rid of the unwanted child and then send Walburga to some convent. But then Pollux discovered the baby was Orion's. His cousin's only male. The incentuous surprise gave Pollux hope. The baby to arrive would be pure Black. Black-Black. And that was perfect for an heir. He only hoped it was a boy.
Orion and Walburga got married and pleased Pollux giving him not only one. But two male heirs. That gave them points. They only had to raise them to be the best. Perfect for a leader, intelligent for business and gallant to marry well and breed children.
As the boys grew, their parents noticed the eldest would be perfect for the job. Sirius had a tough temper, he was an extrovert, sure of himself, flirtatious and very intelligent. The problem was he was too rebellious. He became Orion's favorite. Orion wanted to please his Uncle and have the company to himself. So when he had to be strict and harsh with his punishments, he was. He wanted to turn Sirius into a tough man.
He taught him how to be strong, to not show emotions, to fight, to drink and how to treat women. The problem was that Sirius spent a lot of time with Alphard. And Orion suspected he would be a bad influence for his son. He was turning his son into a faggot like himself.
On the other hand, Regulus, became his mother's favorite. He was the opposite of his brother. He was shy, insecure and soft. Orion blamed Walburga of turning her son into a puffy softy boy. Rumors around the family said Regulus would turn out to be a fag. So of course, he wasn't considered to be the heir. Though Walburga wanted him for it, always making Sirius look bad, Regulus didn't show the strength his grandfather wanted.
That was until Sirius ran away. It was after a strong discussion with his parents that he said he had had enough. After that, he developed strong feelings for a boy, his best friend, Remus Lupin. Orion expected Sirius to come back and take his place, after all, he thought he was only ina rebellious phase he would come out of.
Meanwhile, Walburga wanted for Regulus to take his brother's place. But Regulus didn't want to. He grew up to hate his pretentious family. That was until Regulus found out what his father wanted to do to his brother. (manipulative him and leave him with nothing so he can beg to come back).
Everyone underestimated little Reggie. But he planned to be the perfect new Heir everyone was expecting. He surprised Orion, he surprised Walburga and the rest of the family. Sirius thought his brother had been manipulated into becoming what they had expected from him, and that made him angry and sad.
But in reality it was all Regulus's plan to protect Sirius from the family. And also uncover the nasty and illegal things his father had been doing. Regulus turned out to be a spy against them. And he became a hero.

When Sirius was younger he used to sleep sprawled out in a million and one different positions each night. He moved a lot during the night, his hair would always tangle and sometimes he’d end up drooling a bit. His blankets always got twisted around him and his pillows sometimes fell off the bed. He slept freely without worry.
When Sirius was sent to Azkaban all that changed.
He slept curled up in a fetal like position. It was freezing and dark and he could not twist and turn against the stone cold floor. He was forced to stay in the same position, any other position being to uncomfortable to even try sleeping in. So he slept in the only way he could. Sleep never consumed him for long though for when it did, he had nightmares so vivid and terrifying, he would always wake up screaming. His limbs constantly ached and were sometimes numb after he woke.
Sirius always woke up to the reality of where he was, and that he was not and would probably never be free. Even after Sirius got out of Azkaban, he never slept like he did before ever again.
