On this week’s episode of the Bruce Lee Podcast, Shannon’s guest is actor and Warrior leading cast member, Andrew Koji. Andrew plays Ah Sahm on the Cinemax series Warrior based on Bruce Lee’s treatment. Shannon met Andrew for the first time in his casting session for the show, which she executive produces. Andrew has done such a great job of bringing his own artistry to the role that Bruce Lee would have played without trying at all to imitate him. He showed up in his full soulfulness and genuineness and won the role. Since being cast, Shannon has had the privilege of getting to know Andrew. Andrew is a good egg, as they say, a hard worker, and a thoughtful man. That soulfulness felt in the audition is real! He pushes himself to be better in his craft and in his life, and it’s working. Andrew will be getting to share his talents in the upcoming film Bullet Train opposite Brad Pitt, but you can catch him now in season 2 of Warrior on Cinemax Friday nights. Postcards from Snagglepuss: A Midnight Jam With the Cattanooga Cats on East Lake Okoboji, Some Notes On

Once the feline quartet known as the Cattanooga Cats--Country, Groove, Scoots and Kitty Jo--and their canine keyboardist, Teeny Tim--had completed their set at the legendary Roof Garden at Arnolds Park, with fireworks lighting up the otherwise cornstaceous Iowa sky in the process, and returned to the retreat of my eccentric cousin, Snaggletooth, on the east side of Okoboji, it seemed, for some reason, that they managed to avoid getting tired so late.

Quite the contrary: For some reason, that Southern-baked, RC Cola-and-Moon-Pie-nourished even, act had to make the late hours in the Iowa Great Lakes even more complete. They needed to launch into a jam session. No, not the sort calling to mind the Midnight Jamboree at Ernest Tubb's Record Shop in Nashville, as heard on radio coast-to-coast back in the day, rivalled only by the Grand Ole Opry in listener popularity across the South, not even the Cinemax Sessions series from the early 1990's on the subscription channel--THIS had to be a jam session of the coffee-shop hootenanny sort!!

Which Cousin Snaggletooth was glad to play along with, as well as yours truly, considering where he's something of a ham. Ham biscuit sandwiches, even (but more on that later) ... at any event, the Lodge at Snaggletooth's was the venue. Rather tacky, yet in its tackiness having something of the casual as could make the Cattanooga Cats "let their hair down," as it were, with their musical approaches. Not quite "unplugged," but then again, it was rather crazy and yet likable to begin with, mixing as it did musical stylings with some wonderful swapping of stories "from the road." Which, I admit, seem to be in abundance with this feline musical aggregation.

And you never knew when they were bound to have one of their stories break out into some quasi-apropos musical selection. Or just break out into something unlikely, like Kitty Jo doing a rather whimsical treatment of Ted Mulry's 1971 Australian hit "Falling In Love Again," not often heard "Up Over" unless one was listening to some Australian oldie radio station's online stream. And a rather interesting treatment it turned out to be ... likewise with another of Kitty Jo's wonderful vocal stylings, as in "What I Did For Love," that show-stopper from the Broadway musical A Chorus Line--followed by Kitty Jo's admission that her love for Country was more or less casual, nothing formal except a fondness for sharing the same bed and some whimsical quality time together. And to think Kitty Jo and Country were serious rivals of Scoots for storytelling, though Country acknowledged that it was not uncommon during their concerts for their numbers to sometimes be preceded by some interesting story or two as can "tie in" to the number (although Scoots, for his part, draws his storytelling experience as far back as his upbringing with quasi-dysfunctional parents "out in the holler", picking up his talent over Sunday fried-chicken luncheons and the stories and the gossip they were fond of telling!).

Which is typically Cattanooga Cats for you, come to think of it.

Even when, at around 1:30 in the morning, with the moon starting to set over 'Boji, it was decided to break out the late-night biscuits-and-gravy breakfast with plenty of chicory-enhanced coffee, featuring a blend of mild and hot breakfast sausage, nothing but pure pork such even--and with luck, Snaggletooth came across some good Iowa breakfast sausage at a small-time meat market in Spencer ... and the Cats themselves were even impressed by the taste, the corn-fed goodness even! Not to mention the "made-from-scratch" biscuits made from nothing less than the finest in self-rising flour available, as well as fresh buttermilk besides. And just as at the jam session, conversation remained rather lively and light-hearted, Groove even relating some of his experiences with the barbecue pit such as is a hobby of his.

How long did it last? Probably till the dawn, in all honesty.

Shaking Off The Rust

A humid mid-April night has yielded the first finished piece of the new Nonconnah album sessions...but said piece is a lesson in how much I have to re-learn about writing and recording music since the Lost Trail days. Unfortunately, it’s just a little too familiar, too much like the kind of song Lost Trail would make, and I’m aiming to do something radically different this time around. Also, the mix shows how out of practice I am. Old habits really do die hard. It’s not bad for a first attempt, and as a test of the new interface’s capabilities (note: it works great and results in surprisingly high-quality tracks considering its low purchase price). I suppose I’ll throw it on the outtake pile for the inevitable cavalcade of runoff material resulting from these sessions. Hell, I’ll even post it as an audio post right after this, so you can listen for yourselves.  The track (”This Is Anti-Music”) was recorded entirely on the Reverend electric, directly into GarageBand and Audacity via the Apogee. Vinyl crackle, several tracks of reversed and modulated fingerpicking plus taped warbles (both reversed and forward), some tremolo-picked lead lines run through rotary effects (with a couple pitched up an octave), and a reversed fuzzed-out slide line towards the end. That’s basically it (and yes, I used some plug-ins, including some of the GarageBand plugins, which are surprisingly decent). Oh, and a sample from this notorious moment in Memphis music history, as well, which resulted in the title - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U-k32L0KCc It’s an okay song for a first try. But you’ll hear why it’s too much like Lost Trail. In other news, I was happy to discvoer that the Apogee works with other quarter-inch-run instruments besides guitar, which means my synths can be run directly into the DAW. My primary live tape recorder has four quarter-inch outs, so I figured I’d try to run the interface through it into the DAW for conversion purposes, not thinking it would really work. It worked beautifully, resulting in the same high quality (in a lo-fi way) that recording tracks on the guitar had generated. One downside: I usually hand-warble tape recordings by lightly manipulating the ‘pause’ button during playback into the DAW, and by running it through an interface you can’t hear any playback, so it’s all guesswork as to how the warbles will end up sounding. I like working with unexpected surprises and accidents, though, so leaving another element to chance is fine by me. It’s going to take some serious work to shake the rust off, I think, and deliberately head in a different direction than had become automatic and rote with Lost Trail. Only time and effort will tell how long it will take. Until then, I guess you can enjoy this and other early attempts to get down to business.  Now I’m going to start sifting through the mountain of ideas and demos I’ve recorded over the past couple years and see if anything is worth expanding on.    More soon, ZC
