Ever had a movie that you thought was fine upon release and then you return to watching it years later and nothing has changed? Well, that happened with this flick where I found myself wondering why didn’t I get into this at first, as here lies a great background that overshadows his foregrounds. Its audience and critical scores were as passable as possible, so is there much to find or does it need to be buried like an old pile of bones?
Set during a time where people and animalistic hybrids live together, we meet the Croods, a nuclear Neanderthal family who hide out in the cave, which begins to bother their eldest daughter, Eep. When she ventures out by herself, she meets a new human, Guy, who introduces her to new concepts, which scare her family. It’s not long until the Croods are faced with the end of the world, caused by the lands separating, where they rely on Guy to help them find a new home in the mountains.
That’s pretty much how the story went with, treating the whole duration as a journey across the great outdoors to find a new home. It’s your average Point A to B, similar to a rather large majority of prehistoric flicks ranking from Disney’s Dinosaur to Blue Sky’s Ice Age. I supposed that the intention was to allow these introverted characters more freedom with their environment, but that didn’t excuse its tiresome tropes. Even in the 2010’s, the whole layout was stale, featuring your everyday and tiresome dilemma of not facing the world coming to an end, but having the father and daughter never seeing eye-to-eye. There is a boy character that the overprotective father’s free-spirited daughter seemed to love, so obviously it would result in him growing intensely jealous.
The script does deliver some good jokes here and there, some of them relying on dark humour and banter between the family, though normally repeating the same lines of the father being disappointed that the grandmother survives. With a dazzling sight featuring some flying piranhas came an out-of-nowhere devouring of a whale’s body, leaving behind the skeleton. Another scene I like was the son teaching a crocodile-dog pet how to roll over in a tree, only to have him fall off. I also liked the twist involving an enlarged Smilodon stalking the family throughout the movie, before turning out to be more fearful of the darkness than they are.
Then, there’s a few parts where they really had to dip, such as one extremely forced and unfunny segment with the father making new inventions in order to compensate for his violated masculinity. It’s moments like these that really drag the experiences for me.
What brought me back was its impressive display of the world the cave people explored, almost over shadowing its shallow storyline. With that out of the way, I really liked the new world they discover, coming across rainforests and grand scales of mountains, while supplying the amount of potential with its creatures’ designs. With Chris Sanders who worked on Lilo & Stitch and How to Train your Dragon, he was able to present a variety of animals baring different bodies and small chimeras, even having fun on the various colours across these creatures. These were the sort of designs I wanted from James Cameron’s Avatar as while his were solid, they more or less are imitations on the real-life animals. There’s whale cattle, piranhas with wings and even some hostile punch monkeys. These creatures really became the cause to return to this flick.
I also liked the designs of each of the cave family where they had a dirty and animalistic background with weird facial expressions and teeth, while wearing animal skin outfits.
The characters are also fine, but have been mainly done before; they’re the nuclear family who work off each-other and band together to survive the tough outdoors. You begin with the spirited daughter, Eep, reeking of Disney’s Ariel at first with fondness for the outside world, disobeying her father’s orders. It’s her lack of experience that shows more to her curious side, such as hounding her guide to make the fascinating fire. With her role out of the way, the movie tended to focus more on the father, Grug, where he’s written to be the overprotective type; in this case, they actually gave him a decent arc to have him learn that there’s times to keep your family safe from danger and not from anything out of the ordinary.
The other finally members surprisingly don’t get as much focus or proper establishment as much as Eep and Grug: I barely remember the mother, Ugga, as they didn’t give her room to involve or converse; the son, Thunk, is your average largely-shaped moron; the sassy Gran can have some banter, but that’s all there was to her; since it’s a primitive environment, there had to be the savage baby, Sandy.
The advanced human named Guy becomes the guide for his new company, building up a relationship with Eep, while irking Grug’s own placement as the protector. There’s not much to say about Guy’s character other than he’s pretty much the most relatable character in this flick, reacting to the savage nature of the cave people and already knowing his way around their world. By the midpoint where Guy and Grug both fall into tar pits, it’s when he reveals a tragic backstory which changes the jealous father’s perspective, before it’s never brought up again, so the point kind of loses credit.
I can tell that Nicholas Cage voicing a dedicated dad character was having the time by exploiting his quirky mannerisms into the delivery, which is substantial compared to the rest of the acting; even if they’re Neanderthals and are given the potential to growl and grunt, they’re not given enough material to allow these characters to express themselves. With the exception of Emma Stone as the curious newcomer, I couldn’t say that much about the additional cast, even Ryan Reynolds as the harmless intellectual or Chris Sanders as Belt the sloth.
This film was rather unbalanced, which there’s something to admire about its pretty visuals, but then the rest of it just pales the overall outcome. I’m sure that it had its fans and isn’t in anyway a bad waste of time, but I’m not one of them to immediately watch it all over again.
Final Rating: E
5/10

so I was at a family dinner and they had 'the croods family tree' on the tv as background noise and I was trying to figure out what was wrong with the animation when a small one-off scene with 2d animation started. it looked SO MUCH BETTER and SO MUCH SMOOTHER than the normal 3d animation they had been using. I swear they should have just used 2d it would've looked so much better and the 3d did functionally nothing other than look bad.
I get 3d animation is difficult (i probably could not achieve nearly the quality that they did) but when im shown a scene that uses 2d and looks so much better comparatively RIGHT IN BETWEEN the 3d there isn't an excuse.
this does not matter what so ever but I like 2d animation too much to let this crime go un-mentioned
