Princess Alexandra is the second child and only daughter of the late Duke and Duchess of Kent. Alexandra was the first British Princess to go to an ordinary school and she later attended finishing school in Paris, studying French and music. She married Angus Ogilvy, second son of the Earl of Airlie, in 1963 at Westminster Abbey. The couple had two children together - James and Marina - before Angus died on 26 December 2004, after several years of illness. Alexandra has four grandchildren: Flora, Alexander, Zenouska and Christian.

The Four Mary's Linlithgow.

On way to Edinburgh so here's a wee bit history for you all while I sit on the bus.

The inside of the Pub is like a museum with lots of historical artefacts, don't expect to see the footie though, it doesn't have a television.

Some of you may know the song of the same name, which has been covered by many artists including The Corries, Joan Baez and Steelye Span, but the story behind the song dates back to the 16th century and centres on Mary Queen of Scots.

The Four Marys pub was named after the four ladies in waiting to Mary, Queen of Scots, who was born over the road in Linlithgow Palace.

They were Mary Seton, Mary Beaton, Mary Fleming and Mary Livingston. Mary Fleming was also a relative of Mary Queen of Scots, as Fleming’s mother was the illegitimate half-sister of Mary Queen of Scots’ late father King James V. The other ladies were of noble and high birth.

Although Mary Queen of Scots’ connection to France started at a young age, it wasn’t always certain that France would become her home. King Henry VIII first attempted to marry his son Prince Edward to the young Scottish Queen. Although some of the Queen of Scots’ nobles supported an English alliance, Marie de Guise and other nobles pushed for the Auld Alliance.

In 1548, the four Marys joined their Queen at Inchmahome Priory in preparation for their journey to France. The journey to France from Scotland was a rough sea voyage. It is recorded that during the journey, all of the ladies came down with sea sickness.

Upon their arrival in France, the station of Mary Queen of Scots and that of her ladies-in-waiting could not have been made clearer, as Mary was to join the Valois royal children whilst her ladies were initially separated from her. This could appear as a cruel move by the French King Henri II, however it was for the young Scottish Queen’s benefit. First of all, if she were to marry the Dauphin, she would need to learn to speak French and be associate with the Valois Princesses, Elisabeth and Claude. Secondly, by making her closest companions Henri’s daughters he could secure her loyalty and ensure she was surrounded by women of noble birth and of respectable character.

The four Marys were initially sent away to be educated by Dominican nuns. However their time in France was not to be for as long as anticipated, as although Mary Queen of Scots married Francis, they ruled France together for only a year before the young King died in 1560.

By this time, Marie de Guise, who had once decided her daughter’s future in France whilst protecting her realm in Scotland, had died. This left Mary no choice but to return to her country as queen. The four Marys returned with her to Scotland. Scotland would be the place where the four Marys would seek their own husbands, as their now widowed Queen would also seek out another.

Mary Queen of Scots married her cousin Lord Darnley in 1565. Her ladies also married, all except Mary Seton who remained in the Queen’s service until 1585 when she left the Queen’s household to join the house of God and become a nun. Mary Beaton married Alexander Ogilvy in April 1566.

Mary Beaton had a son James with her husband in 1568. Two years earlier, she had been there to support Mary Queen of Scots as she gave birth to her son and heir James, who would become James VI of Scotland and eventually, James I of England.

Mary Beaton lived a long life, dying at the age of fifty-five in 1598. Mary Beaton has been depicted in history as a model lady in waiting and one who was well educated. It is recorded that Mary Beaton’s own handwriting was very similar to that of Mary Queen of Scots.

Mary Livingston married her husband John Sempill in the same year that Mary Queen of Scots married Lord Darnley. Both Mary Livingston and her husband’s characters were not considered to be honourable and respectful, unlike those of her ladies Seton and Beaton. The Scottish Reformer John Knox wrote that Livingston was “lusty” and her husband was a “dancer”. He even rumoured that Livingston had conceived her child before the marriage and therefore was of unworthy character to be a lady-in-waiting to the Queen. These remarks by Knox were ignored by Mary Queen of Scots who granted wealth and land to her lady and her husband. Mary Livingston was even awarded some of the Queen of Scots’ jewels in her will. However she and her husband were ordered some years later to return them to the crown. Her husband John Sempill was arrested for refusing to return them. Livingston died in 1579.

Mary Fleming married a man who was many years older than her, Sir William Maitland. Maitland was the Queen’s royal secretary. There were rumours that their marriage was an unhappy one, but this has been largely disregarded by history and evidence proves otherwise. Their marriage took place after three years of courtship and therefore, they had time to get to know one another well before the marriage. In 1573 they were captured at Edinburgh Castle. Mary’s husband died shortly after their capture and she herself was kept a prisoner. Mary Fleming was forced to give up her belongings and her estate was not returned to her until 1581/2 by the then King James VI, the son of her former Queen and mistress.

There is a dispute over whether Fleming remarried but it is commonly believed that she did not. She had two children, James and Margaret. In 1581 the Queen of Scots tried to set up a meeting with Mary Fleming, but there is no evidence that this ever took place. Fleming died that same year.

The lives of the ladies-in-waiting of Mary Queen of Scots were very different, despite their common experiences and Dominican education in France; three married and only one lady actually returned to a life in a nunnery.

The British Royal Family

The Lord Chamberlain's "List of the Royal Family" published in 2020 mentions all of King George VI's descendants and their spouses (including Sarah, Duchess of York, who is divorced), along with Queen Elizabeth II's cousins with royal rank and their spouses.[2] The Lord Chamberlain's list applies for the purposes of regulating the use of royal symbols and images of the family.[3] Meanwhile, the website of the royal family provides a list of "Members of the Royal Family"; those listed correspond to the royal family members mentioned and pictured below, with the exception of Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, the Duchess of Kent, and Prince Michael of Kent and his wife.[4]

The core of the royal family is made up of King Charles III and Queen Camilla; William, Prince of Walesand Catherine, Princess of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. They carry out royal duties full-time.[5]

Lower profile relatives who perform some duties are Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester and Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester; Prince Edward, Duke of Kent; and Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy.[5]

Other members of the royal family with royal rank who do not carry out official duties are Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis of Wales; Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex; Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet of Sussex; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; Princess Beatrice; Princess Eugenie; Katharine, Duchess of Kent; and Prince Michael and Princess Michael of Kent.[5]

The Princess of Wales, The Duchess of Edinburgh, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence and The Duchess of Gloucester were present.

The Baroness Ashton of Upholland and the Lord Patten of Barnes were present.

His Majesty invested the Baroness Ashton of Upholland with the Insignia of a Lady Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter and the Lord Patten of Barnes with the Insignia of a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The King later gave a Luncheon Party for the Companions of the Most Noble Order of the Garter at which The Queen, The Prince and Princess of Wales, The Duke of York, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and The Duke of Kent were present.

His Majesty’s Body Guard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms and The King’s Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard were on duty in the Chapel.

The King was represented by Sir Kenneth Olisa (His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London) at the Funeral of Sir David Brewer KG (formerly His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London and Lord Mayor of London) which was held in the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, this morning.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were represented by Mrs Angus Galletley.

The Princess Royal was represented by Mrs Susanna Cross.

Princess Alexandra, the Hon Lady Ogilvy was represented by Mrs Diane Duke.

66 years since the death of HI&RH Princess Helena of Greece and Denmark Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia (29 January 1882 – 13 March 1957). Princess Helena was the only daughter and youngest child of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia and Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Her husband was Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and they were both first cousins of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia. They had 3 children : 1)Princess Olga of Greece married Prince Paul of Yugoslavia; 2)Princess Elizabeth of Greece married Count Karl Theodor zu Toerring-Jettenbach, son of Duchess Sophie in Bavaria and scion of an old and rich Bavarian mediatized family; and 3)Princess Marina of Greece married the Prince George, Duke of Kent in November 1934.She was also first cousin of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Queen consort of Denmark and the grandmother of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy, and Prince Michael of Kent. Princess Elena became a widow early in 1938, as Prince Nicholas suffered a heart attack and died suddenly. From Warship to Museum: Preserving the Iconic HMAS Onslow

H M A S Onslow is one of the distinguished Oberon-class submarines, which were formerly operated by the esteemed Royal Australian Navy. This remarkable vessel was aptly named after the town of Onslow, located in Western Australia, as well as in honor of Sir Alexander Onslow, the esteemed third Chief Justice of Western Australia. The motto and badge of this submarine are derived from the rich heritage of the Onslow family.

The construction of Onslow was initiated in 1963, and it was skillfully laid down by the renowned Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Scotland towards the end of 1967. Almost a year later, this exceptional submarine was launched with great pride and was officially commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy at the conclusion of 1969. The distinguished Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy, had the honor of launching Onslow on 3 December 1968, adding a touch of regality to this momentous occasion.

The motto of Onslow, "Festina Lente," which translates to "Hasten Slowly" in Latin, is a shared sentiment with the Onslow family. Furthermore, the ship's badge proudly displays a judge's wig, symbolizing the connection to Sir Alexander Onslow's esteemed position as Chief Justice. It is worth noting that while this is the sole usage of the name by the Royal Australian Navy, two surface ships of the Royal Navy have previously been bestowed with the honorable title of H M S Onslow.

 The submarine, Onslow, boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 295.2 feet (90.0 meters) in length, with a beam of 26.5 feet (8.1 meters) and a draught of 18 feet (5.5 meters) when surfaced. At full load displacement, Onslow displaces 2,030 tons when surfaced and 2,410 tons when submerged. Its two propeller shafts are each powered by an English Electric motor, delivering 3,500 brake horsepower and 4,500 shaft horsepower. The necessary electricity is generated by two Admiralty Standard Range supercharged V 16 diesel generators. These remarkable specifications enable the submarine to reach speeds of up to 12 knots (22 kilometers per hour or 14 miles per hour) on the surface and up to 17 knots (31 kilometers per hour or 20 miles per hour) when submerged. Onslow's capabilities extend to a test depth of 200 meters (660 feet) below sea level.

Upon its launch, Onslow accommodated a crew of 8 officers and 56 sailors, a number that increased to 60 sailors by the time of its decommissioning. Additionally, the submarine had the capacity to carry up to 16 trainees. Setting it apart from its counterparts, Onslow is equipped with a four-man diver access hatch, facilitating the deployment and retrieval of special forces divers.

Throughout its illustrious career, Onslow achieved several notable milestones. It became the first conventionally powered submarine to be outfitted with anti-ship missiles, solidifying its position as a trailblazer in naval technology. Demonstrating its prowess in combat simulations, Onslow impressively sank a seven-ship flotilla during Exercise Kangaroo 3 in 1980 and even managed to take down the formidable United States supercarrier, USS Carl Vinson, during RIMPAC 1998.

 The primary armament of the Onslow submarine consists of six 21-inch (53 centimetre) bow torpedo tubes, which possess the capability to launch torpedoes or deploy sea mines. Initially, the British Mark 8 torpedo was employed by the submarine, but it was subsequently replaced by the wire-guided Mark 23. During a refit spanning from 1982 to 1984, the Onslow submarine achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first conventionally-powered submarine worldwide to be equipped with anti-ship missiles, specifically the UGM-84 Sub Harpoon. Simultaneously, the United States Mark 48 wire-guided torpedo replaced the Mark 23 torpedoes. By 1996, the standard payload of the Onslow submarine comprised a combination of 20 Mark 48 Mod 4 torpedoes and Sub Harpoon missiles. Additionally, the torpedo tubes could be utilized to deploy Mark 5 Stonefish sea mines, thereby offering flexibility in payload options.

The secondary armament of the submarine encompassed two stern-mounted, short-length 21-inch (53 centimetre) torpedo tubes. Originally intended for use against pursuing submarines, these tubes became obsolete with the advent of steerable wire-guided torpedoes shortly after the submarine's commissioning. Consequently, during the 1982-1984 refit, these tubes were sealed off. The aft tubes were primarily employed to launch Mark 20 anti-submarine torpedoes.

Following its decommissioning in March 1999, the Onslow submarine found a new home at the Australian National Maritime Museum in April, where it is meticulously preserved as a museum ship.

 On 30 March 1999, the esteemed vessel Onslow was decommissioned from service. Throughout its active duty, Onslow gallantly traversed an impressive distance of 358,068 nautical miles (equivalent to 663,142 kilometers or 412,057 miles). Coinciding with this momentous occasion, the sister ship Otama was permanently reassigned to the submarine base at H M A S Stirling in Western Australia, thereby paving the way for the closure of H M A S Platypus.

In a gesture of great significance, the Australian National Maritime Museum was bestowed with the honor of receiving the submarine as a gift in April 1999. Subsequently, on 3 May 1999, Onslow was towed from Platypus to its new home at the museum, nestled within the picturesque Darling Harbour. Adjacent to the museum's other esteemed warship, H M A S Vampire, Onslow was ceremoniously unveiled to the public on 1st June 1999, marking a momentous occasion.

Notably, Onslow holds the distinction of being the second R A N submarine to be preserved as a museum ship, following in the footsteps of its sister vessel, H M A S Ovens. H M A S Ovens, having been decommissioned at the close of 1998, found its place of honor at the Western Australian Maritime Museum. As of 2004, Onslow stands proudly among the illustrious ranks of seven Oberon-class submarines preserved in this esteemed manner.

   In conclusion, H M A S Onslow stands as a testament to the Royal Australian Navy's commitment to excellence and its rich heritage. This remarkable submarine, with its distinguished name and symbolic motto, serves as a reminder of the esteemed individuals and places that have shaped Australia's naval history.

On this day, 57 years ago, 24 April 1963, Princess Alexandra and Angus Ogilvy were married at Westminister Abbey in the social event of the year. The wedding was attended by 2000 guests ranging from monarchs to former housekeepers. The wedding was televised and estimated to have been watched by around 200 million people worldwide. The couple had originally wished to have a small wedding with only close family and friends but ultimately changed their plans.

Despite being only a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Alexandra’s wedding was better attended by foreign monarchs and heads of states than Princess Margaret’s wedding several years prior. This is attributed to her rich royal genealogy from both of her parents and her vivid and likeable personality which charmed the dignitaries of foreign countries during her overseas duties.

Princess Alexandra wore a lace gown designed by John Cavanagh which boasted a striking 20 foot train. She wore the Kent City of London Fringe Tiara and no other jewelry to show the gravity of the gold band she would receive during the ceremony.

Family, friends, and spectators all commentated how obviously in the love and happy the couple was throughout the day. Although it was a high publicized wedding, it was not a public event and remained very much of a family day.
