Kōji Wakamatsu
The Secrets Behind The Walls (1965)
Analysis ⤵
Kôji Wakamatsu "When desires, violations and sexual hopeless souls turn into abstract political concerns"
The movie begins with this scene, a very wide open desirous eye belonging to Makato (a failed student obcessed with american pornography magazines) staring into our empty minds, immediately making us feel the intense and suffocating atmosphere of voyeurism .
" The eye contains man´s whole world, his inner essence..." as the Bambara people say.
Now take a look...
As the film develops an eye scene reappears, but each time different, we see a more closed eye, a darker side of the mind, a loss of conscience, malicious voyeurism.
A look of malice and violence, such a disorder devoured with the wish for decadence. Wakamatsu uses the layering tecnique to express it more intensively, overlaping Makato`s eye whit dark images. S By the end of the movie, before the boy erupts and makes his sister and his neighbor victims of his frustations, the last eye scene appears...
The last sigh, the last drop of this frustation falls, between his sister naked body while the silk bath foam slips between her thighs, reflecting in Makato's obscene dark eye...
The "empty scenes" occupy a big part of this film, perhaps one of the best scenarios to show it, it`s also at the beginning : the sedentary windows.
"it feels like we are in a prison, so closed"
"after all, Japan is full of these crates, full of cubicles."
Home becomes the most dangerous place, the characters can`t get rid of themselves and their hopeless thoughts, broken dreams...
So... like monkeys in a room full of mirrors, they start to lose themselves, things start to fall apart, realities start to lack meaning...
I end this analysis whit the iconic image, of the affair whit the keloid scar man and Stalin`s poster on the background .Wispering :
"You are the symbol of anti-war, I will never forget war, until I still love you..."
Actually, this woman is more in love for what her lover stands for, than her lover by itself. By his keloid, the perfect metaphor for a anti-war symbol.
You can see, how all this is a critic, a political abstract critic...

note : this post is not to say that the possible crushes are potential ships , because not at all imo - however , it does not negate the fact that lynette is a young woman , who can definitely look and be attracted by someone by their looks , personality , etc .

“he was permanently condemned to hell.” if you hear screaming and crying don’t worry it’s just losing my GODDAMN FUCKING MIND. OH MY GOD. KAEYA WITH RELIGIOUS TRAUMA HITS DIFFERENT. IT HITS SO SO DIFFERENT.
okay so with the blue blood thing we can just be like you aren’t fully divine yet so the blood doesn’t turn blue until. idk you die and ascend or whatever. that’s the excuse i use in my brain!
i interrupted myself. anyways. imagine if kaeya was the one to kill you. when he recounts your death, he has allll the grisly details of how you were pinned to the ground by a sword in your throat, almost the same way you’d pin a butterfly to a board. he smiles as he recalls the way your blood spilled onto the ground and the light faded from your eyes. for a moment, he even scoffs at the tears on your cheeks, remnants of the way you’d cried and begged.
and then he gets the news, and it turns out that he truly cannot do anything right. he tries to be honest and loses his family. he tries to redeem his home and dooms himself. he doesn’t bother praying for forgiveness - no matter how kind and understanding everybody said you were, there’s no way you’d forgive a sinner with your blood on his hands.
me when kaeya. when he. him. he’d be so guilty and fucked up post-imposter and i think it adds to his appeal heart emoji - teddy anon
i did NOT mean for it to be religious trauma but. you have a point.
if we follow my headcanon about the blue blood—that it’s swirly like a galaxy, representative of your power—then it makes sense it manifests alongside your power, and if you blur some lines and squint we can work with that.
anyway i do think kaeya should be the one to kill (that sounds bad) and you. your words man you are so good at this-
he probably wouldn’t pray. and i don’t think, other than the first night getting blackout drunk, that he’d drink, as a form of self-punishment. no, he needs to be awake and sober to truly live through his crimes, for he would only condemn himself more with liquor.
kaeya that stops worshipping at altars or attending service, simply because he doesn’t believe that somebody like him should be in such a holy place. he never takes shifts at the cathedral, and he always takes point on the bloodiest missions. not out of enthusiasm—the sight of blood, even red, now makes him a bit sick—but out of a form of sacrifice. why put blood on innocent hands when he, somebody already sunk to the lowest of hells, can take it?

lynette sometimes feels a bit . . . smothered by lyney . she understands his fears , for she has them too ; but she feels as though it reaches the point that he can become physically ill if anything happens with how much he ends up stressed out , and that worries her a lot . she knows he trusts her , and knows that his fears are for him not trusting others --- but even she needs a bit of time for herself .
