Best Things To Do in Mesa Verde National Park
Best Things To Do in Mesa Verde National Park: Mesa Verde National Park was established in 1906 to preserve and interpret the archeological heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from 600 to 1300 CE. Today, the park protects nearly 5,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States. My name is Rob Decker and I'm a photographer and graphic artist with a single great passion for America's National Parks! I've been to 51 of our 62 National Parks — and Mesa Verde is a unique park, given its historical and archeological significance. I have explored most areas of the park — so I'm ready to help! So if this is your first time to the park, or your returning after many years, here are some of the best things to do in Mesa Verde National Park! Self-Guided Tours Spruce Tree House - Best-Preserved Cliff Dwelling You can observe Spruce Tree House from viewpoints near the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum. Rangers are available at the overlook to answer questions and share information. Mesa Top Loop Road - Auto Tour - 700 Years of Mesa Verde History A 6-mile driving tour with short, paved trails. Twelve easily-accessible sites, including surface dwellings and cliff dwelling overlooks. Highlights include Square Tower House, Sun Point Overlook, and views of Cliff Palace from Sun Point and Sun Temple stops. Far View Sites Complex - Five Mesa Top Villages & Far View Reservoir Far View House plus four other villages and a dry reservoir on a level 3/4-mile (1.2 km) unpaved trail. Four miles north of the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum. Step House - Pithouse, Petroglyphs and Cliff Dwelling   A 100 foot descent and ascent on a winding path. Total walking distance is about one mile (1.6 km) round-trip. Allow 45 minutes to one hour. Trail begins near the Wetherill Mesa Kiosk. Badger House Trail - Trail to Four Mesa Top Sites The 2.25 mile round-trip trail through Badger House Community surface sites begins at Wetherill Mesa Kiosk. Your walk through this area is a journey through 600 years of prehistory. Combination gravel and paved trail. Cliff Dwelling Guided Tours Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Long House can only be visited by taking a ranger-guided tour which are very popular. A tour of Long House, on Wetherill Mesa, can be taken on the same day as a Cliff Palace or Balcony House tour. Tours can be strenuous. There are no height or age restrictions for tours, but children must be capable of walking the extent of the trails, climbing ladders, and negotiating steps independently. All infants must be carried in backpacks while on tours and adults carrying children in backpacks must be able to maintain mobility and balance. Tour tickets for Balcony House, Cliff Palace, and Long House must be purchased in person. Tour tickets sell out quickly, but can be purchased up to two days in advance. Cliff Palace - Mesa Verde's Largest Cliff Dwelling This one-hour, ranger-guided tour involves climbing five, 8-10 foot ladders, on a 100 foot vertical climb. Total walking distance is about 1/4-mile, round-trip. The tour begins at Cliff Palace Overlook, an 23-mile, one-hour drive from the Visitor and Research Center. Cliff Palace Twilight Tours Enjoy an intimate, leisurely encounter with Mesa Verde's largest cliff dwelling. Dramatic sun lighting will appeal to both amateur and professional photographers as well as those seeking a deeper connection with this extraordinary archeological treasure. Balcony House - Adventurous Cliff Dwelling Tour This one-hour, ranger-guided tour involves climbing a 32-foot ladder, crawling through a 12-foot long tunnel, and climbing up a 60-foot open rock face with two 10-foot ladders to exit the site. The tour begins at the Balcony House parking area, a 25-mile, 1-1/4 hour drive from the Visitor Center. Long House - Mesa Verde's Most In-Depth Tour   Starting at the Wetherill Mesa information kiosk, this two-hour ranger-guided tour involves hiking at least 2.25 miles round-trip, and climbing two 15-foot ladders within the site. The hike has an elevation gain of about 130 feet. The tour ends at the Long House trailhead, giving you the choice of returning to the kiosk or exploring more of Wetherill Mesa on your own. Allow about 2.5 hours (total) for tour and return to kiosk. Half-Day Guided Bus Tours Mid-April to mid-October Mesa Verde National Park concessioner, Aramark Leisure, conducts guided bus tours that offer modern views of the Ancestral Pueblo people. Tours include the 700 Years and Far View Explorer Tours. Tickets may be purchased at the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center, Far View Lodge and Terrace, and Morefield Campground. Balcony House Sunrise Tour Rise before dawn, and experience the magic of Balcony House at sunrise! For centuries, Pueblo farmers have been observing the sky and the change of seasons. Take the Sunrise Tour of Balcony House at summer solstice or fall equinox and join in the long tradition of skywatching in Mesa Verde. On this 90-minute tour, you will climb a 32-foot ladder, crawl through and 18-inch wide and 12-foot long tunnel, and climb up a 60-foot open cliff face with stone steps and two 10-foot ladders to exit. Cliff Palace Early Bird Tour Looking for an early morning adventure? This daily, early bird tour offers the benefits of a smaller group size, cooler temperatures, and the ability to reserve a tour of Cliff Palace in advance with online reservations! On this 60-minute tour, you will descend uneven stone steps and climb four ladders, with an elevation change of 100 feet. Total walking distance is 1/4 mile. Evening Programs Morefield Campground Evening Program In 1907, archeologist Jesse Fewkes began the first evening campfire talks in the history of the National Park Service at Mesa Verde. That tradition continues today. Enjoy a free, 45-60 minute presentation each evening by rangers at the Morefield Amphitheater (weather permitting). The amphitheater is located at the end of the road in Morefield Campground. Bring a flashlight. Program is free and offered each evening. Bird Watching Mesa Verde National Park is home to several distinct habitats. The types of species which you will encounter depends on the habitat present. If you are an avid birder, make sure to purchase a copy of the brochure, "Checklist of the Birds." This will help you locate where species are found in the park. The listing of birds in this page will get you started as a bird watcher in Mesa Verde. Take the Petroglyph Point or Spruce Canyon Trail and look for warblers, flycatchers, woodpeckers, jays, hawks, chickadees, titmice, and other species. The Knife Edge Trail also has good birding. If you are lucky, you may see a peregrine falcon or a golden eagle soar from its nest out across the Montezuma Valley. During the summer months, you can walk the Soda Canyon Overlook Trail near Balcony House, or the short trail to the Park Point lookout. The Park Point area is a good place to see hawks, towhees, grouse and eagles, in addition to the many species listed above. In the fall, you may want to take the Knife Edge Trail early in the morning to catch migrating warblers and hummingbirds feeding on the Indian Paint Brush. During winter months, be on the lookout for chickadees, nuthatches, an occasional brown creeper, canyon wrens, woodpeckers, flickers, and jays during your Spruce Tree House tour. Turkey vultures usually arrive in late March and leave in early October, so the large black birds you see will likely be common ravens or the vivid black-billed magpie. Photography Picture Taking Tips Some cliff dwellings are open only from late spring through early fall. During the off-season, photos may be taken from the overlooks above the cliff dwellings, weather permitting. Most of the cliff dwellings are best photographed in mid-to-late afternoon. If you have an adjustable lens we suggest you close your lens down at least 1/2 stop from what the photo meter indicates (spot meters excepted). For example, in black and white photography the front walls of Cliff Palace will give your meter a false light reading. We suggest you bracket your settings on Cliff Palace exposures.  Best Times to Photograph by Season June to September - 3:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. October to November - 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. December to March - 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. April to May - 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. During mid and late fall and early and mid spring the sun is lower in the southern sky and more light strikes the cliff dwellings. Winter light is generally less bright. On overcast days the soft light allows for photos to be taken that will show good details and subtle colors. During the winter months there is less vegetation obstructing views from the overlooks after the scrub oak has lost its leaves for the season. Stargazing While not offered as a guided activity, Mesa Verde National Park provides wonderful opportunities for stargazing. Since there are no large cities in the Four Corners region, there is very little artificial light to detract from the stars in the night sky. Most nights the skies are clear and full of stars. On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way. The locations recommended for stargazing in the park are listed below: Far View Lodge The only lodging available in the park from mid-April to mid-October. Each room has a balcony where guests can see for miles. For visitor safety, this area is well-lit. You may want to seek out a darker place, if this obstructs your view of the stars. Morefield Campground The only place to camp in the park from mid-May to mid-October. Located in the Morefield Valley, this is an especially place good for looking at stars since there is little artificial light. Join a ranger at the Morefield Amphitheater for the nightly (Memorial Day through Labor Day) campfire program. Bring a flashlight for the walk back to your campsite. Montezuma or Mancos Overlooks These are really the best areas in the park for stargazing. If you are staying outside of the park or want to get away from artificial lights, both of these overlooks along the Main Park Road provide views of the twinkling lights of the valley towns and the stars above. Unfortunately, these areas are not available for overnight camping. Click here to see the Mesa Verde National Park poster. My Five Acres. Travel. Adventure. Yoga. My Five Acres. Travel. Adventure. Yoga. - Travel. Adventure. Yoga.
Want to see Sacra di San Michele, an incredible mountain-top abbey, in person? This post will help you plan your visit, whether you want to hike up, drive up, or take a tour. Read on for all the details.
What’s in our guide to visiting Sacra di San Michele?
1. 3. 5. 7.
The dramatic abbey has an even more dramatic backdrop. The Alps rise away in the distance. Photo by Elio Pallard via Wikimedia Commons.
As you stand on Sacra di San Michele’s dramatic balcony, watching birds swoop by at eye level and following the line of the Susa River valley until it disappears between crisp, white Alps, perhaps a novel filled with mystery and intrigue will come to you, too.
If you’re feeling inspired, read on for all the details to take a…
Day Trip to Sacra di San Michele
Also don’t miss these posts:
Your complete Turin city guide → 2 days in Venice city guide → Cycling in Italy – your amazing adventure →
Sacra di San Michele is on a remote mountain-top.
The most famous of the group is Mont Saint Michel in France, where, before the tourist-friendly promontory was built, the tides made getting inside a dangerous activity.
If you’re interest in dedicating a year of your life or so, you can start the pilgrimage in Jerusalem at Monastery of Mount Carmel.
You’ll pass through the Monastery of St Micheal in Greece, Monte Sant’Angelo in the south of Italy, Sacra di San Michele, Mont St Michel in France and St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, England.
It all ends (presumably after a cold swim) on Skellig Michael, the windswept Irish island that was home to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
With a history like this, a day trip to Sacra di San Michele (known as St Michael’s Abbey in English) from Turin can’t help but evoke a time when the world was more mysterious and magical than it is today.
Even if you don’t care about religious sites or history, the beauty of the surroundings and the fresh air is well worth the time — and the climb.
The interior of Sacra di San Michele is cool and tranquil.
But, what goes up must come down, and the abbey and its management began to decline until 1622, when Pope Gregory the 15th shut it down for good. For a few hundred years it remained empty, until the mid-1800s, when the Rosminians, a Catholic charity, moved in and began to restore and revive the place.
Fast-forward a couple of hundred years to today and you’ll still find pilgrims, though possibly of a less pious sort, gathering daily in the abbey. For we modern pilgrims, there are modern amenities, like a parking lot, a cafe, and flushing toilets.
Though not as striking as the exterior, the interior of today’s church is worth the €8 entrance fee (unless you’re on an extremely tight budget). You’ll get to ascend the Stairway of the Dead, where early monks and benefactors are buried in tombs encased in the walls.
Up close, the flying buttresses are immense slabs of stone, impressive in their size and function. The 12th Century Door of the Zodiac was carved by Maestro Nicolao, a renowned master mason. The symbols of the zodiac decorate one side of the door, while on the other, 16 other constellations appear.
Don’t be fooled by the heft and imposing nature of the door that leads into the church itself. Despite its appearance of being permanently closed — and the decoration of the devil in snake form urging you to go away — it is the way in. We tried the door a few times and almost turned back to look for another way in before we got up the nerve to heave it open!
Inside the church itself, you’ll find tombs of Savoys placed here in the 1800s. There are also many sculptures, wall frescos, and an interesting progression of pillars with capitals to examine.
Step out the back door to the large patio for the most impressive views you’ll see all year.
The reward for hiking up to Sacra di San Michele is this stunning view.
The Susa river valley spreads out in two directions, while the Alps watch over from the north and west. Directly below, you’ll see the ruins of the earlier . Watch birds soar in and out between the crumbling walls and prepare for your imagination to be set alight.
Leave a little time to wander the small town of Sant’Ambrogio before or after your hike.
Sant’Ambrogio Village
There are a few hiking routes to Sacra di San Michele but we chose the one starting in the charming town of Sant’Ambrogio. It’s easily accessible by train from Turin, and you can start your hike at the train station like we did.
From there, cross the busy main road and head straight into the heart of the village. Leave a little time to wander the narrow streets of the town, absorbing the essence of small-town Italy, which doesn’t seem to have changed for a hundred years.
Family run shops beckon with open doors and enticing scents, while impossibly tiny cars zoom by improbably narrow streets. Every once in a while, you’ll get a glimpse of Sacra di San Michele through a gap in the buildings. Don’t forget to bring your camera.
To get to the start of the trail, find Chiesa di San Giovanni Vincenzo, a large catholic church in the centre of town. Walk through its parking lot and out the back — then start climbing. It’s all uphill from here.
It’s hard to miss Chiesa di San Giovanni Vincenzo in Sant’Ambrogio, where you’ll find the start of the hiking trail.
There are signs to point the way and soon you’ll be walking a narrow paved path behind the houses of the village. This is a great way to get a glimpse into the lives of locals!
Up the Pilgrimage Route
After about 15 minutes, the path takes a sharp turn above the last houses in town and you’ll find yourself on a wooded hillside. Because it’s a pilgrimage route, the trail is paved with rounded stones, slippery from years of wear. Bring good shoes so you avoid turning your ankle or slipping down the hill.
The trail up is lined with worn paving stones and studded with stations of the cross.
The climb from here is uphill but not terribly steep. It will give your calves and quads a workout and you’ll work up a sweat, too. Take your time. There are plenty of rest spots along the way, including a couple of water spigots, where the water is not only potable but deliciously crisp and cold.
The other remarkable feature of the climb is the series of crosses placed along the route, representing the stations of the cross. They are all similar, so not too exciting, but they do serve as way markers, letting you know how far you’ve gone and how much is left.
Emerging from the forest around an hour later, you’ll get your first up-close views of the abbey. If your breath is not already quick and shallow from the hike, the first sight of Sacra di San Michele will do the trick.
Save some leg strength for the hike down. Walking on the slippery cobbles will leave you feeling the trek by the time you reach the bottom.
San Michele Brewery
After your hike, make sure to stop by San Michele brewery for a post-hike drink and snack.
Now, I reveal the secret behind why we chose to hike the Sant’Ambrogio route…
San Michele Brewery!
In the middle of town, this modern brewery offers a great selection of their own beers. A tasting session is the perfect way to restore your energy after a day of hiking. They also have an extensive menu, so you won’t need to go hungry!
There has been a religious building on this site since the late 900s.
other routes
you can take up to the abbey.
Alternative Day Hiking Route
From Frazione Mortera, which is just above Avigliana, there is another popular trail that leads up to the abbey from a slightly different direction. It takes about the same amount of time (around 1.5 hours) but is less steep, since you start from a higher altitude.
You can also leave from Chiusa di San Michele, and hike up the mule track to the abbey.
Multi-day Through Hike
If you’re a long-distance hiker, you can come to Sacra di San Michele from Oulx, crossing over the Gran Bosco park and Orsiera Rocciavrè wildlife park. The route is about 60 km long, so be sure to prepare for an adventure and make accommodation or camping plans before you set out.
Via Ferrata
Had we planned a little better and had a little more climbing experience, we might have tried the via ferrata route to Sacra di San Michele. If you want to take this route, you’ll need around 4 hours, plus the proper equipment. For safety, we recommend hiring a local guide.
There are lots of stairs up to the abbey, so make sure to wear comfy shoes.
book ahead online
If you’d rather skip the hike and to Sacra di San Michele with a guide, this tour will help with that. Travel by private coach from Torino and explore the abbey with a guide who will explain what you’re seeing!
If you’re coming from Turin, it’s easy to take the train to the two main starting points for a hike up the mountain.
Torino Porta Nuova to Sant’Ambrogio, 1 train per hour, 30 mins, €4
Torino Porta Nuova to Chiusa di San Michele, 1 train per hour, 40 mins, €4
By car, it’s a 30-minute drive from Torino, and there is plenty of free parking just off the main road in Sant’Ambrogio.
But, of course, we recommend taking the train because it’s just as quick and better for the environment. Plus, you can have a few beers at the San Michele Brewery if you don’t have to drive!
We hope this guide to visiting Sacra di San Michele is useful in planning your trip. We loved getting out into the fresh air of the Susa Valley and exploring the ruins of this 1,000-year-old abbey. Drop us an email if you need help planning or if we inspire you to go! We’d love to know.
♥  Happy mindful adventures, Jane & Stephen
We’re not going to lie, it takes a LOT of work to create guides like this. But it’s easy to help us out! If you book or buy something using one of our personal links in this post, we’ll earn a small fee at no extra cost to you. Of course, we would never recommend anything we didn’t 100% believe in! Huge thanks in advance! –S&J

20 Recliner Chairs in Contemporary Living Rooms
Tumblr media
Ever thought of getting a recliner chair to your Dad? On The Grounds That I Was a little kid, I all the time saw motion pictures by which the dad has this huge, black or brown top back accessory chair or recliner chair the place he sits on whenever he watches TELEVISION with the family within the front room. Considering That then, i thought, dads should have separate chairs from all of the family. Do you think that this manner too? What’s great concerning the furnishings industry at the moment is that folks should purchase a single piece of furnishings or a chair for that matter. i'll remember that a time where you will have to shop for a complete set to your living room, your eating room or in your garden. All this have changed as time passed and as our layout trade has stepped forward. in case you may just relate to what I’m pronouncing, pass in advance and take a look at this thread and share them along with your family and friends!
Tumblr media
Picture: http://www.decoratorsunlimited.com/contemporary.html The brown recliner chair at the top left of this front room is one way or the other similar to that of the chair you take a seat on should you visit your dentist excluding that it is no longer in white! This house is a pleasing representation of a masculine area – all colors used within the room don't seem to be those that most ladies would prefer, however the neutrality of this space is rather inviting and neat.
Tumblr media

Arplis - News: How To Do “Craftsman” Right – The 7 Key Elements That Make This Vintage Style Work
If you are a fan of this blog, I think it’s safe to say that you have a deep love (or at least hefty fondness) for a home full of soul. It’s basically our main goal to inject as much of it as possible into any home, regardless of when it was built. But let’s be honest, there is just nothing like a home with actual history…like 100 years of it. A home that has seen some sh*t. I find that when the phrase, “they just don’t build em like they used to” is uttered, I either slightly roll my eyes and halfway smile in silent defense of my generation or I immediately (and audibly) agree because well, it’s the truth. So when I opened my email a few weeks ago and saw this beautifully restored craftsman home, my heart filled right up. I was immediately struck by its visible soulfulness and needed to know more.
Enter the “soul keepers,” Jamie and her husband, Craig. These two are no strangers to a historical home remodel. They actually do this more or less as a hobby or as Jamie says, “it’s an addiction… but it’s an addiction to beauty and craft.” So never mind that Jamie had given birth to their second child one month (yes, ONE MONTH) prior when they saw this house for sale. Because as soon as they saw it they knew they had to bring it back to life.
This house is now for sale (I know!) because Jamie and Craig already have a beautifully restored home they aren’t ready to leave. So after they restored this beaut, they called upon one of EHD’s favorite staging and design firms, A 1000 X Better to really make sure that it felt as welcoming as possible for their potential buyers. And since we are all about beautiful homes AND teaching you how to create them, we are going go through the 7 main design elements you will want to consider when designing the perfect (and slightly unexpected) craftsman home. In Jamie’s words, “you don’t open up a Craftsman home and make it an open concept. You embrace their quirky personalities and enhance them where you can. It’s a labor of love really.” We couldn’t agree more. So let’s talk about the ways to design a historical home that will stand the test of time, so the tradition of bragging to future generations will stay firmly intact:)
Embrace The Original Wood and Keep It Matte
wall color | brass ceiling lights
The wood mouldings and accents are what make craftsman homes so darn special. The warmth and texture they bring are off the charts. I mean, just look at this living room. Instead of painting and/or putting a high gloss finish all over that stunning wood, they brought it back to its natural state. Does it look super modern? No. But that’s what makes it special. It’s like the wood is basically naked, baring its soul to you.
Here’s what they did to restore the wood back to its former glory: “We stripped all the wood on the first floor, and had real historic wood artisans do the work to make sure the wood had the right feeling, stain, and patina. We had alder baseboards specially milled to match those we found in the home. We had gorgeous decorative crown moldings cut that match those we found. We trimmed the house in Douglas Fir, because a house smells better when you use real wood trim.”
Paint The Walls Light Or Really Dark
wall color | semi flush mount | vintage rug | art on left
When Emily and I were looking at these photos we realized that in terms of painting a craftsman home you really only have two options when it comes to colors – really dark (like in that stunning parlor room above) or pretty light…like white or light gray – ideally a cooler toned color, stay away from beige. Especially when you are dealing with a lot of natural wood this is key. For example, a warm reddish color would look too similar to that medium wood tone.
small semi flush mount | large semi flush mount
Of course, there are exceptions and wallpaper is a whole other story (we will chat about that later) but choosing a high contrast color is the best way to make the wood accents pop.
Before we move on, I think we need a moment to take in the overwhelming beauty of these windows. I mean HOW?! They really knew what they were doing 100 years ago:)
Highlight Special Architectural Moments
wall color | accent color | vintage rug
In a home like this one, there are so many special architectural moments. By highlighting a few of them with paint you visually elevate the entire home. Take the killer arch and stair rail in the photo above. The dark paint makes that whole moment pop and actually helps to make the natural wood stand out more in contrast. Had they not been painted it still would have been beautiful but way less of a wow moment.
This built-in bench is another great example. It really pops because of the paint color and gives the space a fresh feel which is important in a historical home. You want to care for its history and bring it back to life BUT also make it feel like it belongs in today’s world.
Pepper in Unexpected Decor to Balance Out Traditional Feel
vintage rug | wall color
In true EHD fashion, we LOVE any opportunity to “mix it up” and create unexpected moments. A 1000 X Better is no stranger to the “unexpected moment” but in my humble opinion, they knocked it out of the park with that cool mint wicker desk and that sofa. I honestly don’t know if I can live a truly happy life until that sofa is in my possession. To me, you (sofa) are perfect.
pendant light | brass ceiling lights
art on back wall | vintage rug
But like the desk, this sofa is a very different style than the home. But because they are within the color palette of the home and have natural textures, they work perfectly and make the space feel unique.
Hot Tip
You can mix any style as long as it falls within your chosen color palette.
Keep Kitchens and Bathrooms Classic
cabinet knob | cabinet pull | shelf brackets | sconce | switchplate
The two places to keep your freak flag temporarily at ease in a craftsman home are in the kitchen and bathroom. By all means, have fun with the decor once all of your hard (and permanent) finishes are in place but as Jamie said, “we chose finishes that would have been used in 1905. Marble, soapstone, real wood cabinets that get painted and feel like wood when you touch them.” Truly the last thing you want is to regret a countertop choice because it feels out of place.
island pendant | semi flushmount| sink | cabinet color | wall color | vintage rug
So now that we have that little hot tip out of the way, let’s take a sec to appreciate this kitchen. There’s not one thing I don’t love in here. There is just the right amount of detail in the cabinet feet and island legs to pay homage to the style of the home, but everything else has a sleeker, more modern traditional feel. It looks updated (in the best way). Also, those stairs are too beautiful, right?
vanity | sink faucet | robe hook | showerhead | shower handle | round mirror | vintage pendant source | accent wall color
I want to shower in this bathroom so badly. It’s another example of Jamie and Craig’s talent for making modern updates but honoring a home’s original architecture. Notice how every material has visual texture. The tiles, countertop, aged brass, and wood all bring life to the space. Nothing feels sterile which is always our goal when we are designing.
flush mount (vintage shade) | sconce (vintage shade) | faucet | shower handle | shower head and trim | vanity| drawer pulls | mirror
The same goes for this smaller bathroom. They used beautiful materials and fixtures that are akin to the home but elevate it in the best way. Also, that marble tub surround is all heart eyes for me.
Choose Light Fixtures That Stylewise Are In Line With The House
vintage rug
You may have noticed that throughout all of these photos, all of the hardwired light fixtures are more on the modern traditional side. We think this is the way to go (and it’s what Em did in her English Tudor Home). Keep those more permanent types of design elements in line with the style of the home for longevity and overall homage to the style. I mean you probably chose your historical home for a reason right?
Don’t Be Afraid of Fun Wallpaper
wallpaper | faucet | door knob | vintage semi flush mount (similar)
I know we talked earlier about only using very dark or very light paint colors inside of a craftsman home (which we still stand by all these photos later) but we also think that wallpaper is a great way to make a room more special. We would suggest choosing a pattern that has a nostalgic feel like the awesome one they chose for the powder bath. Otherwise, just choose a texture but don’t go too modern unless of course, you are completely throwing the vintage baby out with the historical bathwater.
Well, there you have it. A stunning home tour with tips that can hopefully be helpful and transferable to any type of historical home. A huge thank you to Jamie and Craig for letting us feature their beautiful project. We are so happy that there are people who want to celebrate design history and take such good care of it.
Let’s talk about this incredible house in the comments. Thoughts, feelings, and sofa yearnings are all welcome:)
Love you, mean it.

Inspiring Home Renovation
Hi, my dear friends. How are today? It’s getting really cold here and I had to take a little break while writing this post to make myself a mug of hot chocolate. I am being so bad about sweets lately! I am really into baking and all I will say is that I have to put myself back on track! Anyone feeling the same way? It’s so hard to avoid these type of temptations at this time of the year, right?
You can’t think about food without thinking of kitchens… unless you love to eat out, which is something I also love doing! But if you enjoy cooking and baking, having a beautiful kitchen certainly can make you feel more inspired and even help make things easier and more practical. If you’re looking for kitchen renovation ideas, this post should really inspire you. In fact, it might even inspire you to renovate not only your kitchen but also extend it to your mudroom and laundry room as well. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Please keep reading to know more details about this beautiful and welcoming home renovation done by Katelyn of KBG Design. She’s a wonderful and talented interior designer and I feel we will learn a thing or two with her today:
“Our clients wanted a bright and classic white kitchen/ laundry/ mud room with touches of warm grey and accents of marble, brass, and natural wood elements. They wanted to keep the color palette neutral so that colorful accessories could be swapped out during various holidays throughout the year. This project was an addition plus an interior remodel reconfiguration. We were brought in on the project after permits were already pulled, but did some tweaks to the plans during construction to accommodate details that the homeowner wanted. From there, we custom designed all the cabinetry, built-ins and tile layouts and we quite involved during construction to ensure proper design execution.” – Katelyn of KBG Design.
  Inspiring Home Renovation
Designer Tip: “If you want to do away with an eat-in kitchen table, make sure you have plenty of room for seating at your island – and be mindful as to where those are placed. Play close attention to keeping guests out of the kitchen’s main work-triangle i.e. the connection between the sink/fridge/cooktop. I often place the refrigerator right at the transition between the public and private space of the kitchen just like this kitchen. That way, guests can access the refrigerator without crossing through the cook’s work triangle.”
White Kitchen Paint Color
Soft Color Palette: “For the cabinet paint color, I selected Dunn Edward’s “Cool December”, which I feel is the perfect balance of a white that is not too creamy or yellow, but still has hints of warmth to it. It’s basically the perfect white.”
 Vent Hood: Zephyr 42”.
Pot Filler: Kingston Brass.
Backsplash
“For the backsplash, my clients wanted a traditional honed Carrara Marble so we went with the 3” x 6” size in an offset pattern by Bedrosians. This really shows off the variety of veining throughout the natural stone.”
Backsplash: Bedrosians 3×6 Carrara Marble Tile.
Counterstools
Counterstools are Rove Concepts (provided by the client) – similar here.
Beautiful Counterstools: here, here, here, here, here & here.
Eat-in
“Many of our clients are doing away with kitchen tables and opting for super large islands. That way family and guests can be close by or dine informally while still gathering together in the kitchen.”
Dimensions: Kitchen space is 26’-7” x 14’ deep or 365 square feet including the desk command center area.
All Appliances by GE Monogram.
Kitchen Island
“Because this island is so large (7’-8” x 10’), we were larger than any single available engineered quartz material. So, we opted to source a manufacturer that makes consecutive slabs. You’d never know it, but this island has a seam but it’s unnoticeable in real life and in pictures.
The island countertop is Vadara’s Calcatta Blanco, an engineered quartz, which again has ribbons of warm gray mixed with gold on a mostly off-white background.”
Kitchen Sink & Lighting
Kitchen Sink: Kohler Undermount single-bowl farmhouse kitchen sink.
Lighting: Wayfair (provided by the client) – similar here (great quality).
Kitchen Faucet
Kitchen Faucet: Kingston Brass Bridge-Style Kitchen Faucet.
White Oak Island
“The island was custom stained by the cabinet maker to match the warm-toned engineered hardwood flooring by Hallmark Floors, Alta Vista Collection in color Del Mar.”

Homework Zone
Kitchen Trends: “Many clients are requesting built-in desks areas that I call a command center- if you will. A place for a laptop or desktop computer, file storage, charging stations, etc.”
Shelves: Restoration Hardware Floating Metal Shelf in “Brass” (68” size). Others: here (White Oak).
Chairs: here.
Layout
The mudroom and laundry room are located close by the kitchen. Ahead, you will find the formal dining room.
Beautiful Runners: here, here, here, here, here & here.
Cabinetry
“We went through great lengths to design every inch of the cabinetry to give it a truly custom look. My client has beautiful taste so she was already equipped with several concept images and selections to inspired our designs. Instead of a traditional one-piece crown, we created our our crown by inverting a base moulding plus a 1” x 1” which is traditional with a twist – and might be my favorite part of the kitchen.”
Cabinet Hardware: Rejuvenation Cabinet Pulls & Knobs Mission Collection, unlacquered brass.
Perimeter Countertop
“The perimeter is a velvet Cabrini Grey engineered quartz by Daltile. The grey perimeter broke up all the white cabinetry without weighing the color palette down.”
Family Living
The kitchen opens to a comfy and inviting family room.

The fireplace is flanked by custom cabinets and White Oak floating shelves.

Amazing Interior Renovations: Before and After Images That Impress
In the world of interior design, few things are more satisfying than a fantastic before-and-after shot. Seeing a blank canvas come to life is inspiring in so many ways – a compelling reason to reconsider the hidden potential waiting to be uncovered within your own four walls. This post explores several great transformations by V+ Studio, an architectural visualization firm that reimagines homes with new furniture, modern decor, carefully curated artwork, and more. In some cases, even the flooring and wall treatments get an update. What would your dream home visualization look like?
The first “before” picture starts as simple as can be. White walls, beautiful wood floors.
And the “after” visualization? Stunning! Colorful details like knitted poufs, a blue Wegner style lounge chair, and a geometric area rug all pull from hues found within the unifying modern artwork. A glass glass coffee table in front of the tufted sofa, both pieces simple and streamlined for modern appeal.
Classic country-style decor sets the stage for the next big transformation.
With the yellow walls and heavy upholstery choices gone, this white living room immediately feels larger. Metallic accents add a gleam of subtle luxury and indoor plants provide a soft natural touch. You may also notice the floors get a bit of an update – the old parquet and checkered tile swapped with more current options.
Next is a nice transitional living room design. But what would it look like modernized?
Parquet floors have been replaced with wood floors, oriented to make the room look longer. The classic wood entertainment console has been removed as well and replaced with a low modern sideboard. Simple white sofas and a coffee table with storage brighten up the atmosphere. Decorative table lamps are replaced by an adjustable floor lamp.
Classic features make this room stand out. Instead of replacing them, the “after” design puts them to good use.
You can see that the wallpaper, chevron floors, and radiator all stand unchanged and uncovered. This room makes the most of them by going a little bit vintage with its decor. Both the coffee table and the TV stand take cues from mid-century modern design for a charming retro look.
This interior has an interesting layout. The tall ceilings and small divider wall present interesting design challenges.
Both issues are addressed beautifully. The space on the other side of the divider wall is arranged as a small living room, the sconce lights removed to make the wall friendlier for television viewing. Artwork is hung high to take advantage of the extended ceiling height. A trio of beautiful dining room pendant lights hang above the table to make the arrangement feel more intimate, finished in brass to match the dining chairs below.
Perfectly simple. This “before” shot offers so many options.
To balance out the urban window view, this space goes with a warm natural theme for its “after” visualization. Wood furniture, indoor plants, and lots of layered cozy textiles make this bedroom feel especially welcoming.
Another space with so much potential! What would you do with this unconventional layout?
While that far corner seems like it would be difficult to furnish, this visualization reveals it would be the perfect spot for a little home office. The central wall is another hard-to-decorate feature but finds wonderful purpose with the addition of a sideboard cabinet and large photo print.
Here’s a look at another corner of the same space.
Simple furniture retains a somewhat low profile, making the most of a prime corner window spot. A grouping of three nesting round coffee tables allows for flexibility in the arrangement.
This bedroom features some very interesting classical details around the baseboards, under the windows, and around the ceiling light.
Those classical features are embraced by the new decor theme. This space uses a fabulous transitional theme – the use of glamorous metallics is kept minimal but impactful, the colors remain soothing and soft, and each furniture selection features a truly timeless profile.
A look toward the other side of the room reveals bold paneling on the doors.
Clean breezy curtains allow the interior architecture to speak for itself.
In the living room, another truly classic element has been preserved.
And again, a transitional decor theme does a great job serving as a bridge between the classic and modern elements.
This living room features another tricky layout.
Instead of letting the angled wall serve as a limitation, this concept transforms it into a built-in bookshelf. A cozy living area occupies the space that remains, with a television mounted to the only bare wall.
The unique parquet flooring continues into the bedroom spaces.
Bold artwork centers the space, and bedside table lamps provide gentle illumination from either side.
Another bedroom, this time with a more traditional layout.
A lovely desk arrangement takes advantage of the spectacular window view. A spacious rug defines the boundaries between work and rest areas. Storage furniture is scarce but effective – tiered bedside tables and a storage ottoman provide space for essentials.
A mixture of classic and modern elements creates an interesting “before” starting point.
Luxurious materials meet modern profiles to create a high-end transitional theme that dances between eras with grace. A hint of emerald green in the living room works well to complement the cherry cabinetry in the kitchen.
Here is another view of the same room.
You can see all the elements come together. Because the cabinets in the kitchen are cherry and the floors are a light honey color, the square coffee table plays an important role mediating between the two finishes for a more intentional look.
The tour moves on into the bedroom.
Emerald bedroom chairs and sapphire textiles set the stage for elegance. This bedroom also demonstrates another example of different woods being used well together – the dark bedside tables balancing the weight between light floors and the darker cherry ceiling fan.
This bedroom offers a very clean slate.
Removing the wall sconces offers more flexibility for the bed arrangement. Here, they’ve been replaced with bedside lamps.
The final transformation is especially interesting. While the “before” and “after” images feature very different furniture and decor choices, the result maintains the same overall theme.
It remains a very vibrant and eclectic space. Outdated table lamps are replaced with the fabulously fashionable Oda style lamp (originals are available here), the small ceiling fixture replaced with a dramatic Rattan light, and a handsome Acapulco chair is added to underscore the tropical atmosphere.

Get your fill of history without having to spend a pence! The National Gallery and the Tate Modern are free and therefore so are a few of my favorites.
Buy an Oyster Card – This prepaid credit card can help you help save you about 50 percent on each subway. If you anticipate utilizing the tubing alot, make this card! In the event you leave and possess extra on the card, then they can even refund the total amount!
People watch at the markets – Sunday is market day at London. There is the Camden Market, the Portobello Market, the Flower Market, and several thousand more choices. Folks today see, capture amazing photos, and relish local London lifetime without having to spend a dime.
Watch the changing of the guards – The changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace are at 11:30am, and also the horse guards in Whitehall shift at 11:00 am. All these are both interesting and free to see because you ingest authentic British flare.
Just walk and explore – London is a enormous metropolis, and also there are amazing historic buildings all over. I walked four hours and scarcely made a dent to the road I had been going to shoot (thus the requirement to find the Oyster Card.) Nevertheless, as soon as you walk and escape the tourist area across the Thames, then you are going to have to see London exactly the way in which the tourists do. You are able to get free maps of revealing walking paths round the funding from some one of London’s tourist advice shops.
Last minute theater tickets – You’re able to obtain last minute tickets into the theater from the state booth at Leicester Square. Availability varies each and every single day, so make sure you make it early.
Skip the cabs – Taxis are very pricey in London and certainly will eat into your budget by simply choosing them . I remained out past once the tube shut night and the cab to my hotel was 31 GBP! If you commence taking taxis anywhere, you are going to wind up spending tens of thousands of dollars every day, so bear this in your mind.
Master the night bus – To prevent taking costly flights, make certain you receive yourself a map of their nighttime bus paths and that means that you may return to your own hotel/hostel on the economical. These buses move throughout the town and in the suburbs. You might even utilize your Oyster card on those buses. In reality, buses are necessarily the most affordable public transport option!
Stay at a Hola Hostel – Hola Hostels is just really a system of hostels mostly in South and Central America, though they currently have locations around Europe, too. They provide you a 10% reduction with their associates, in addition to additional regional discounts for activities and food. Joining is completely totally absolutely free of charge, and also their hostels may also be devoted to environmentally sustainable techniques.

Turn Up the Creativity: Your Guide to Mixing Modern with Vintage Design <a href="https://www.savidevelopers.com">Savi Developers</a>
Turn Up the Creativity: Your Guide to Mixing Modern with Vintage Design
They say “out with the old and in with the new.” Well, what if you had control over your home’s decor and said: “in the old as well as the new!” That’s the type of thinking that makes for a home centered around an eclectic design style.
Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the term eclectic as an idea, style, or taste coming from broad-based and diverse sources. So in knowing the meaning behind eclectic, there’s no way possible to solely design your home in the popular decor schemes of Hollywood Glam, Traditional, Mid-Century, or Rustic.
In the world of home design and decor, if you despise anything too “matchy-matchy” or have a longing to “break all the rules” of interior design, then eclectic style is perfect for you! Mixing funky trends of modern style with the classic looks of vintage style will allow you to confuse the senses and tickle the curiosity with assortments of different places, textures, and time periods.
Eclectic Style: Where It All Began
With eclectic style being a combination of looks that don’t really match but still coordinate well together, it’s hard to imagine that this unique style of home decor originated in the early 1900s during the Arts and Crafts Movement, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Eclecticism was a way for the progressives and thinkers of the time to fit the art and furnishings of their homes into a style more personal to them, rather than fit the mold of a particular style.
Taking the Eclectic Approach to Home Decor
Just because eclectic style allows you to break some of the common design rules, that doesn’t mean that it’s a rule-free design style. If eclectic style speaks to your mind, body, and spirit, read on to find out how to incorporate this distinctive touch to your home.
Embrace the Bold Colors
Interior design rule number one for color schemes: a room’s colors should be cohesive throughout the entire room. Although that’s a good design rule to abide by, that rule doesn’t apply when it comes to eclectic style. With an eclectic style, your colors can be bold and bright.
You should never be afraid to mix pinks and yellows with emerald green and turquoise blue! Now, to pull the look together and make the colors really pop, you want to incorporate a neutral base like white or gray.
Get “Touchy-Feely” With Multiple Textures
To add eclecticism to a room, you MUST utilize different textures… a little rough with smooth… hard with soft! A vintage navy blue camelback sofa, velvet in texture, sitting atop a large, shaggy, yellow area rug will not only make you want to rub on the couch all day, but it will also make you want to rub your toes through the shag of the rug!
Give Your Eyes Something to Look at With a Focal Point
When creating the layout of your room, keep in mind that just because the eclectic style involves fusing together different styles and periods of time through various decor items, that it means there should be a lack of focus.
You can create a focus in a room by way of a fireplace, chandelier, or a bold accent piece. A great focal point for a room is an accent wall… particularly a photo accent wall. It allows you to showcase your family or traveling adventures.
To make your accent wall even more eclectic, you can transform your wall with acrylic prints! The great thing about acrylic prints is that they’re printed on high-quality photo paper, they come in multiple size options, and they give your photos dept and vibrancy! To make your wall mix modern and vintage, incorporate black and white photos as well as color photos done in acrylic prints! It will definitely be the focal point of any room!
Consistency: Let Eclecticism Flow Throughout Your Home
Although eclecticism style varies, the overall style should be carried all throughout your home. Your home can appear off balanced if you have one room that’s eclectic in style while the rest of your home is traditional or rustic… can you see how the two style extremes clash? If you feel that you and your home is ready for a design makeover to eclectic style, be sure to make the commitment to reflect this unique style all throughout your home.
Don’t Be Reserved… Let the Eclecticism in You Shine
Just as every individual has their own sense of style and personality, that’s the same theory behind eclectic design. It’s the perfect style to showcase all the aspects of design that you love. Whether it’s crazy patterns, bold colors, or unique paintings and wall art, eclecticism is a great way to bring a little “mismatchy” to a world of matchy-matchy!

5 Modern Ways to Use Wood Paneling
Wood paneling was all the rage in the mid-20th century, before falling out of favor for decades. If you wanted an updated home, the first thing to go was the wood paneling on the walls. Bright, sleek colors were used to replace what was seen as dated wood textures.
But now wood paneling is back. People are finding clever ways to use it in a variety of modern styles. With some sleek geometry, creative stylings and light colors, wood paneling fits well into the updated, modern space. Read on for several ways to use wood paneling in your modern home.
Warm wood paneling creates great contrast with cool grays. Image: Heritage Construction Companies
Use wood paneling to create sleek lines
A wonderful aspect of wood paneling is that it can produce sleek geometry. By cutting the paneling into narrow strips, you can get a more lined, geometric look. Modern spaces are all about stark geometry, so this is a key way to use wood paneling in a modern style.
The photo above shows that changing the direction of paneling between the ceiling and the walls adds visual interest and bold geometry. You can also try switching it up, with narrow panels on the ceiling and wider panels on the wall.
Wood paneling plays well with geometric elements like the vertical design over the balcony. Image: AGSIA Design Group
Create segmented spaces
Another way to incorporate modern wood paneling is to use it on just a small portion of the room. In the photo above, a narrow area of paneling surrounded by white walls actually helps the space look more modern. The wood area creates a sudden change in texture, generating visual interest.
The wood paneling also acts as a visual barrier for the sitting area by the TV, which is a good way to separate different spaces in the open-concept areas that modern spaces are known for.
Wood paneling fits right into a rustic chic style. Image: Creative Floors
Opt for rustic chic
A popular modern style in homes is rustic chic. That’s where elements of rustic design combine with more modern elements. For instance, in the photo above, the rustic accent wall (made from reclaimed barn wood) complements the modern white chairs.
Another interesting element is the herringbone layout of the wall, demonstrating again the value of geometric designs. The distressed texture of the wood adds even more interest.
Three-dimensional wood paneling can be subtle and still have a huge impact. Image: Legacy Construction Northeast
Go for three-dimensional geometry

Wood paneling was all the rage in the mid-20th century, before falling out of favor for decades. If you wanted an updated home, the first thing to go was the wood paneling on the walls. Bright, sleek colors were used to replace what was seen as dated wood textures.
But now wood paneling is back. People are finding clever ways to use it in a variety of modern styles. With some sleek geometry, creative stylings and light colors, wood paneling fits well into the updated, modern space. Read on for several ways to use wood paneling in your modern home.

Go for three-dimensional geometry
Yet another option for updating the idea of wood paneling is to try a more three-dimensional style. This is easy to accomplish: Simply raise a few panels above the main backdrop. It’s a funky style that fits well with modern styles, since modern aesthetics tend to veer towards creative geometry and three-dimensional home features.
What’s more, this idea is highly customizable. You could choose large square panels at different heights, like in the photo above, or opt for narrow, long panels. You could also go for smaller panels of different sizes for a collage effect.
