if you do ever refer to Feitan as your boyfriend, whether it being because you want to get a reaction out of him or trying to use affection as a manipulation tactic, he just freezes up at first and needs to process your words.

he’ll quickly covers his face with his cowl, effectively hiding a large part of his expression (and the pink coating his cheeks). you're given a very harsh flick on the forehead before he slinks off. judging by what little you saw of his expression, you might think he’s mad at you for crossing a line, dreading whatever punishment he’ll dish out.

technically, you're not wrong. he’s mad at you for making the emotions swirling in his chest worse and for so directly hinting that there’s something romantic between you two. Feitan hates the fact he’s in love with you. it’s a weakness, something his enemies could use against him.

when you fall into your usual uneasy sleep, Feitan returns to his familair hobby of torture. this time, he isn’t exactly paying attention to the activity, the pleas of his victim strapped to the chair not registering. he’s still mulling over your choice of words. he feels pathetic for not being able to brush it off, but he can’t focus on anything else.

he kidnapped you because he knows he feels something romantic towards you, sure, but he doesn’t expect you’ll ever like him back. he’s not sure what to make of it. being called something like your boyfriend feels too intimate and icky, but it is technically why he kidnapped you. the way he cuts that night is deeper and more drawn out than usual, the memory constantly replaying in his mind.

you’re never punished for it, but his unfortunate victims are.

Every betrayal begins with trust. Jason Todd trusts Dick Grayson, and so Dick is a glowing, ticking timebomb.

-The Past-

Dick and Jason have history, not all of it good. Not all of it bad.

Nightwing: Year One

Batman #416 // The New Teen Titans (1984) #31

Skipping the early years all the way to the Red Hood era, Dick is someone who pretty consistently tries to give Jason a chance. Dick keeps up his guard and doesn't trust blindly, but he also tries to listen to Jason, reach out to him, and even work together when possible. Although Jason is an enemy, although it'd be much easier to believe the worst, Dick still generally chooses to keep his heart and mind open.

Outsiders #44-46 (2007), written by Judd Winick. When Jason obtains information that could free an innocent man from prison, he chooses to turn to Nightwing for help. In turn, Dick also chooses to believe in Jason.

Nightwing 2021 Annual, written by Tom Taylor. Despite (falsified) video evidence of Red Hood committing a murder, Dick doesn't jump to assume the worst in Jason. Dick chooses to trust and verify.

As Red Hood, Jason doesn't really like to ask favors or depend on others. Yet Nightwing tends to show up and help him anyway.

Now if Jason were healthy, then Dick's kindness would be comforting and reassuring. But in Jason's experiences, the most crushing pain comes from the people he's supposed to trust the most.

Catherine Todd, Willis Todd, police officers, social workers, a schoolteacher, Sheila Haywood, Bruce Wayne. Those people were supposed to protect Jason—those people ended up hurting him. After these experiences, Jason has become fixated on anticipating others' behavior (look up "fortune telling" as a cognitive distortion). Dick has become the latest source of safety. And so Dick's kindness is a trigger, as Jason anticipates more betrayal and pain.

-Dreams-

Jason's dreams have implied two things about his inner feelings:

1) Jason trusts Dick in ways that he no longer allows himself to trust Bruce—in his dreams, Dick is the first one who shows up for him when he's scared. Dick is the one who anticipates Jason's questions without being asked, and notices the fears that Jason tries to suppress.

2) Jason fears Dick is going to betray him, reject him, humiliate him. Because Dick is in a position where he can hurt Jason, then past experience says he inevitably will hurt Jason.

Examples:

Nightwing #121 (written by Bruce Jones, AKA the infamous tentacle monster arc) - Jason has been ingested by a mutating alien tentacle monster (long story). He dreams that Dick is in the darkness with him—but Dick mocks Jason for hoping that Dick would care to rescue him.

Truth & Justice #11 (written by Trammell) - When Jason has a fear toxin-induced nightmare of being buried alive again, Dick is the one who appears at his graveside and offers him help. However, the nightmare Dick then proceeds to ridicule Jason and attack his worth.

Task Force Z #7 (written by Rosenberg) - Jason has a nightmare of being surrounded by enemies attacking him. The nightmare culminates in the scariest part when Nightwing and Batgirl (Babs)—his older sibling figures—make him feel like a little Robin again, and tell him that all his efforts are just making everything worse.

DC vs. Vampires #6 (2022), a vampire apocalypse Elseworld written by Tynion & Rosenberg

Now Elseworlds (alternate universe) comics aren't canon to the main universe, but can still offer possible insight into characterization… In DC vs Vampires #6, Jason tells Dick (who has revealed himself as an evil vampire): "I always knew someday you'd screw up worse than anyone." Yet up until the moment when Dick reveals himself as an evil vampire, Jason never has a rational reason to anticipate that. So either Jason is just now lying to cover up his own shame for having misplaced his trust yet again, or Jason really has been harboring fears that Dick would betray him.

-The Present-

Circling back to recent happenings in the main universe: Task Force Z #8 (2022). Jason is behaving very suspiciously on a solo mission. Dick wants to know why—whether the greater good is at stake, or whether Jason is in trouble and needs help. And so Dick asks Jason to have a reasonable conversation... to which Jason responds by punching him and running away. Just the slightest suggestion of misgivings on Dick's part, and Jason chooses fight and flight. Another turn of the cycle, and Jason leaves the family circle again as quickly as he rejoined.

Task Force Z #8 (2022), written by Rosenberg

So Jason does cherish his brotherhood with Dick… but Jason is also watchful for the tiniest possible warning signs that Dick could hurt him, so he can cut off that bond before it can be used against him.

Dick Grayson is irresistibly trustworthy. Jason can't stop himself from trusting Dick. That's exactly why he can't trust Dick.

More Handplates/Vargas, this time obviously inspired by my holiday request 💕💖💞 I honestly rather like how calm Gaster seems whenever he’s in Edgar’s vicinity, he is a fairly unassuming human haha. Is it because he doesn’t laugh very often? Oh no that’s sad actually haha

I’m not done with Blank Slate Ch. 4 just yet - hopefully soon! - but this lineup stands out to me especially since I made it while rereading Handplates. Specifically after Gaster is pulled out of the Void - Gaster having to face the people he loves who have no memory of him really spoke to me in a Blank Slate way - the scenario of being able to completely start over and have never done anything to hurt your loved ones, at the expense of never having done anything to them, as far as they’re concerned, ah! It hurts so beautifully!! That’s one of the central themes I’m chasing so it was so cool to see in that context! Very inspiring ♥

Like ROBLOX HQ for example. That map is sooooooo fucking bad. Genuinely. It's too small, it's so easy to spawn camp the other team if you manage to get the upper hand, some chars' phinishes [like Rocket's for example] are soooooo fucking finicky to use Like I see the dev team reworking other maps but why not the HQ???? It's a map that REALLY needs to be reworked and touched up so that it'll ACTUALLY be an enjoyable map to play on. - 🎐 anon [I HAVE RETURNED!!!]

i agree tbh theres a lot of maps i think need reworks.. underground war is one of them its a very neat concept but i think its not done that well... the secret side tunnels are cool but they literally serve zero purpose in conquer it feels like the map was built for stealth characters when we HAVE NONE... like the caves lead directly to backlines but theres actually no POINT IN THAT bc hypers will snipe from the top of the rocks in the middle and everyone crowds the centre AS THEY SHOULD BC ITS CONQUER. not to mention how massive the underground is for no reason it really strikes me as an annihilate map that was randomly decided to be a conquer map last minute.. they couldve done something much cooler with the holes up top akin to the two paths out of spawn in bowling alley (i.e. have the Large Hole that everyone goes down and then turn the side paths into paths dug INTO THE WALLS for supports or snipers so they can have a perch or safer less direct way to get down to the centre... and it should stay a conquer map but have annihilate as an option bc tbh a rework for it would go SO HARD as annihilate.. or if they ever add capture the flag as a gamemode i think underground war would be such a good ctf map not even joking..... SORRY WOW IK THE ASK WAS ABOUT HQ BUT I NEEDED TO TALK ABT UW

5. "Sing to me" Dick Grayson/Slade Wilson

Dick has never been a fan of the rain, even if living in Gotham he needed to get used to it if he wanted to survive. It doesn't mean he has to like it, and the way the city is perennially covered by layers of polluted air and stormy clouds is his least favorite aspect of it.

However. Sprawled on the bed with way too many pillows propping him up in a semi-sitting position, the wall-sized windows of the loft letting him see the entirety of Gotham bay, the way it's engulfed by clouds, the soft patter on the glass... well, that he's been enjoying greatly. He's been at it for a while now, just resting like that and watching the rain fall on the gray sea, and by this point he's hungry and would get up if he could, but he doesn't dare move. Not with Slade currently sleeping face down against his chest, an arm partially wrapped against Dick's middle.

Dick has fingers running through his hair, slowly and gently enough not to rouse him, and listens to his heart beating in an uncharacteristically slow way. They had a rough night. He knows he'd be dead, wasn't it for Slade. Slade would be dead too, wasn't it for Dick. At least they're even, he thinks with a half smile, and if this isn't the first time he and Deathstroke exchange favors, it never happened before that once the mission was over, they'd found themselves kissing and groping each other under the relative cover of an isolated alley.

«Little bird.»

Dick doesn't flinch because he's used not to, but his caress halts if only for a moment. «I thought you were sleeping.» He says and it's true, not much changed in the way Slade's breathing and his heart is beating, he might be sleeptalking for all Dick knows.

«I was.» Slade straightens up but remains over him. He doesn't lean against Dick's chest anymore, instead cages him with his own. «But, I understand you might want to go.»

Dick smiles and leans in to close what little space there is between them and kisses him, and their bodies are not touching anymore so he can't be sure, but he could bet that the man's heartbeat picks up.

«I'll stay until you're fully healed, okay?» He says but barely even finishes the line because a hand comes up on his cheek and there's another kiss, deeper this time, more urgent. Like Slade was still gripped by adrenaline after seeing Dick get nearly decapitated.

«Yeah.» The man says, appearing to forcefully pull away but their foreheads remain touching. «Stay as long as you wish.»

Dick frowns and brings both arms up to hold him, recognizing apprehension when he sees it. «I'm alright.» He says, straightening up on his knees so that they can embrace properly. «I'm not hurt. You made sure I wasn't. Please don't be worried about me.»

«I know, Dick.» Slade replies and runs a palm down Dick's naked spine, and he frowns, realizing that this is the first time the other calls him by his first name. «I'm not worried. I'm just glad you're here with me.»

He widens his eyes and feels his face flush, not knowing what to say or do with what he just heard. He doesn't break the embrace and searches the edges of the bandages he himself wrapped around Slade's middle; that's what prevented them from actually tearing each other's suit off in that lane, the night before. The fact that Slade was bleeding out, the wounds too severe for his healing factor to take care of without assistance. At least they managed to get to Slade's safehouse. Or, well, whatever this luxurious loft in Gotham Central classifies as.

«Sing to me?» Slade asks, holding him back and breathing in once dipping his nose into the hair on the side of Dick's head. «Like you did last night.»

Dick smiles, he thought Slade was passed out and didn't even realize. He nods and lies back down with him, letting him rest against his chest again, then hums an old song from his childhood.
