#They're not even fighting each other in the championship

It's borderline disturbing how unhinged some attitudes are towards George, I really don't understand it. For someone they claim to hare they seem to keep close taps on him.

I don't know what was going on with the strategy, but once again messed up their drivers.

I will level with you, I genuinely don't see the same level of visceral hatred from George fans towards Lewis as I see from Lewis fans towards George. Maybe I just follow the right people, or have the misfortune of getting the wrong Lewis fans filtered into my feeds via various algorithms. I've definitely seen more threats/fantasies of death/injury/personal harm from one side than the other so I do baulk slightly when I see people cast it as a 'both sides' kind of issue. I think the reason I see it slightly more off kilter is because there's a vast cross section of people who irrationally hate Lewis, whereas 90% of the George hate seems to be entirely framed about how his actions did or didn't affect Lewis... if that makes sense?

I think I find it more odd from the Lewis fans because I kinda get being frustrated with the guy you're fighting to beat, and last year, I totally got why Lewis fans were pressed with George, but... I don't understand why you'd get SO overwhelmingly pre-occupied with someone who's 5 places behind you in the WDC and who has a hefty points deficit by this point. Lewis finished ahead today, he finished ahead last week, so what are you getting angry about? The fact that the result wasn't achieved in the exact process you deemed it should be? People racing each other is surprisingly part of racing, including your own teammate at times. If it went to a scripted perfect plan then it wouldn't be a sport anymore.

Like sure, have a grumble that x,y,z was annoying. A bit of shit talk is, of course, a part of sport, but so is moving the fuck on and picking your battles and the real deep toxicity that keeps coming out of what is essentially small change is just tiring. Not every racing inconvenience is an Abu Dhabi level conspiracy to oppress your driver. It's Hanlon's Razor in a nutshell. "Never attribute to malice, that which can be explained by stupidity".

Everyone in Merc is pissed at the car, and yet somehow each drivers fans seems to think the blame lies with the other driver. Why get pissed with George or Lewis when you can just get pissed with the true villain... Toto?

yourusername there's a lot to announce so hold on to something. the reason i've been MIA the past few months was the world chess championship. i've been isolating myself with mentors in a hotel to study and practice for my matches to prepare for the championship. a huge thank you to all the people that have helped me, motivated me and encouraged me my whole career to never give up on myself, they're the reason i can call myself a chess world champion now. a special thank you to magnus_carlsen who didn't defend his title this year and was able to guide me throughout our sessions together, i wouldn't be where i am today without your guidance. another massive thank you to my fiancé and the love of my life, charles. what do you think is the most defining reason brocedes fell apart? i've always been of the opinion that they could've come back from the mind games and all the hurtful shit they said to and about each other in the press (with time) but they couldn't come back from the fact that lewis hated losing/being second to nico. also i've seen some people say that, they wouldn't of fell apart as badly if they were on different teams but i disagree. i think they would've ripped each other apart no matter if they were on the same team or not. it's just the nature of brocedes y'know, to rip apart the thing you love. (god fuck now i;m thinking of that one poem that's like "have you ever killed something good for you just to be certain that you're the reason you can no longer have it?" auuugh head in hands head in hands)

hm I disagree very heavily. brocedes fell apart because they were in the same team competing for the championship. they've been in the same team before! they literally karted for 2 years together in the same team and they were best friends. even in 2013 when the merc wasn't good enough for the championship, they were buddy buddy as teammates trading a handful of wins. in 2008 when they were on different teams they did interviews about their friendship, lewis spun nico around for his and their first podium together.

if they were competing from different teams for the championship in 2016, I can see brocedes turning out more like sewis where they'd be rivals on track but cordial and even friends off it.

they're not ontologically coded to rip each other apart. the problem was mercedes, that both drivers felt the other was being more favoured while merc officially maintained there's no first driver. it's also the very unique circumstances that the hybrid era merc dominance meant they were each other's only rivals for most of the time. there was no fighting against the rest of the grid which forces you to work together, your biggest rival is your teammate, and that made things toxic. every weekend was swapping 1-2s but even the engineers and driver teams started viewing the other side of the garage as their competitors. it's also the fact that nico put up a hell of a fight, if there had been a clear gap like lewis and valtteri (even without team orders) then nico could've been forced to swallow the second driver role like mark webber.

ultimately it's a very simple story of there can only be 1 winner, and they both wanted to win.

what is your take on lestappen being/becoming a reverse brocedes?

I'm assuming by reverse Brocedes you mean that they start out enemies and end up 'everything bar lovers' (to quote Crofty about Lewis and Nico), rather than Max and Charles becoming teammates, fighting for championships and being a pseudo-Brocedes. I saw the idea of Lestappen as a reverse Brocedes summed up perfectly by someone somewhere on the internet a couple of months ago (don't remember who but please shout if it's you):

If Brocedes is the thesis, then Lestappen is the antithesis.

We begin with Brocedes, the thesis. Lewis and Nico were supposed to be the ones who made it. They became fast childhood friends, Lewis went on vacation with Nico's family often, Nico did Lewis's kart set-up when he broke his wrist, etc. etc. Nothing could ruin their friendship until they were fighting for championships and suddenly they're keeping secrets, refusing to share any details of their race for fear that it could help the other. They play mind games against each other, outwardly saying that the other isn't their friend, etc. Fast forward to now, they both live in Monaco, in the same building, but Lewis refuses to even speak Nico's name still.

Then we come to Lestappen, the antithesis. Nothing about Max and Charles's past insinuates that they were going to be friendly. Both generational talents, they were pitted together on the karting tracks of Europe from the earliest points they could remember (Lestappen met when they were both 5!). Everyone who ever met them and interviewed them confirmed that this would be the next big F1 rivalry. Both of them are open about the fact that they truly obsessively hated each other all throughout their childhoods. Fast forward to F1 and sure there are a few scuffles (Austria 2019 and the great Instagram unfollowing) but then they're in a championship fight and someone can never find something bad to say about the other. In fact they seek each other out to analyse and break down the race. In the middle of all this, they suddenly find themselves sharing a friend group of drivers. Max has moved to Monaco and learns to play padel with Charles's family friends, and Charles has lunch with Max's extended family.

Lestappen are the reverse Brocedes in every single way, Max and Charles's dynamic refutes the idea of Lewis and Nico's dynamic in entirety, from start to finish. I have many brainworms about the juxtaposition of these two, but @il-predestinato has a pretty excellent fic about this as well.

In conclusion: yes. Lestappen are reverse Brocedes.

Reader's POV

The bright lights shone above, reflecting off of my metal jewelry in flashing colors of light. The atmosphere was humid with the smells of sweat and alcohol. Music blared from the speakers placed strategically around the room, causing the walls and floors to vibrate with the bass.

Bodies pressed up against me from every side but I didn't mind too much since they were the bodies of my four partners. Yes, four. How on Earth I got lucky enough to score all four of them simultaneously I'll never know but I'll cherish them forever.

The colorful flashing lights illuminated each of my partners' faces as I danced between them all.

Rhea held my hips from behind, grinding on my ass as Dominik held my waist, swaying his hips and singing along to whatever song was playing in front of me.

Damien and Finn were off in their own little world as they grinded against each other next to us, occasionally bumping hips with us as we all swayed to the music.

My face and neck were both flushed with sweat as I danced the night away with my partners. We were celebrating Dominik winning his NXT North American Championship Title back.

Covered in sweat and panting slightly, I gently pried myself away from the sandwich my two partners had put me in.

"I'm gonna go get drinks!" I shouted to the two of them as I pointed towards the bar. It wasn't too far away but with the amount of people in between it felt astronomical.

"Be careful!" Rhea shouted back before closing the space between her and Dom, the two of them now grinding on each other instead of me.

I giggled happily to myself as I made my way towards the bar. I had to dance my way around crowds of people along with individual couples so I wasn't met with a hand to the face.

Reaching the bar, I laid my hands atop the counter as I waited for the bartender to finish what he was doing. His movements with the bottles captured my attention, captivating me as I watched in awe.

"Hey, beautiful. Whatcha drinkin'?" An older man with scraggly, peppered, facial hair saddled up to my right

"Just water," I replied, turning my attention briefly to him before turning back to watch the bartender. Just trying to nicely tell him to get lost but he didn't seem to be getting the hint.

"Lemme buy you a drink, baby." His slurred voice rose to be heard above the music, only spreading the smell of his beer breath further into my face. He raised his hand and started whistling at the bartender, who, on the other side of the bar, couldn't hear or see him.

After a second or two of not being acknowledged he gave up and focused his undivided attention onto me. His beady eyes stared straight into my soul.

"No thank you. I'm actually here with someone." I smiled politely, taking a subtle step back away from the man. I did a quick sweep of the dance floor, trying to find my partners, only to see the four of them all in the exact same positions I had left them in.

"Hey, now. I don't see anyone." He did an overexaggerated look around us at the crowd as he leaned forward even closer to my face. I tried to step back again but found myself up against a stool and no longer able to move away.

The man only pushed further towards me, effectively caging me in. My heart started to race as I started to panic.

I wouldn't be able to beat a literal child in a fight, much less this drunk grown-ass man.

"Yeah, well, they're right over there." I pointed in their general direction, refusing to take my eyes off of the man in front of me though lest he try something when I'm not fully paying attention.

I can't speak for everyone, but I can talk about why I came to like them:

Purely from an aesthetic perspective, they look absolutely irresistible together. They are both very handsome/pretty guys. They really have this beautiful and vibrant energy around them as individuals, and when they are together, they look like someone's fever dream. So, it is very understandable for people to look at them and think: "Wow, these two would look so fucking hot doing nasty/bad/good/horrible/lovely things to each other, let's write them down so everyone can agree with me."

But it is never just this simple.

Lestappen's true allure lies in the way that their destiny seems to be literally intertivined from day one.

Their past before their F1 careers is filled with so much lore as I am sure you're having fun reading about. They have literally been racing against each other since they were toddlers. Everyone who knows them both says that they are of equal talent in different flavors. That they are generational talents and if they're given the machinery and team atmosphere that they deserve, we'll be in a delicious few years of them fighting for championships against each other (i am looking at you, ferrari). So, the childhood rivals narrative is already grand. At this point, I need to say that I liken them to a reverse Brocedes (brocedes were childhood best friends who broke apart as adults due to their championship rivalry. Lestappen is childhood enemies who as adults became closer and I hope if they get to fight for a WDC, they'll get even more closer like Launt and Makkinen.)

They fit all the popular media tropes both as a couple and as individuals:

They are the Sun and the Moon, the Red Oni&Blue Oni, the Fire and Ice/Water. All the best dichotomies you can think of... Dichotomies are attractive for people and in narration because they generally deal with people sewn from the same cloth who have turned out different due to their circumstances, meanwhile being fundamentally the same. Like both sides of a coin...

They also both fit into these contrasting roles and subvert the trope, too. (I am on the 'subvert the fanpopular assigned roles' team because people cannot be fit into simple stereotypes.)

More than the Enemies to Lovers trope (which i always approach varily because most people write Max like a brute and Charles as a helpless damsel), I think the Fated/Starcrossed Lovers, the Mirror of One's Self/One's Better Half/Soulmates tropes are much more explorable and lend themselves to character study better. Because, their situation looks both simple and yet very complicated.

Of course, I am speculating here as a fanfiction author who works on what I can see/read about these men, but apart from the "differents attract" and the "twink/hunk" flavoured fics going around, what pulls people in is how they seem to have been literally created for each other, this connected by the red string of fate thing they have going on. Their whole worlds seem to be revolving around each other:

They just can't help themselves about showing their fascination with each other (one more so openly and loudly, the other is a bit reserved about it, but slowly slipping and it is delicious to watch).

They are each other's both destinied and chosen rivals (God, the intimacy of this shit right here... leaves no room for anyone else to even be an "afterthought" as long as they have each other in their sights as their target).

The single minded attention they have for anything the other does even if they pretend to not pay attention (they do).

The tension between them. (Sometimes spicy with adrenaline and the need to best the other and sometimes tasting like soft, years long unnamed yearning).

Unnamed, unlabeled... as if the moment they put a name on it, call it friendship, joke about it as a bromance, it will turn into something especially Charles doesn't seem that ready to embrace. Yeah, this is them... They have certainly been something for each other for years, since they were kids... That something grew with them, evolved, sometimes had very sharp edges, sometimes soft and fluffy... the way it never died off, never tapered off even when you think Max has become everything Charles has ever wanted to be, gained everything he has ever wished for meanwhile Charles can only watch and possibly blamed himself for falling short and feeling admiration warring with jealousy in his heart whenever Max looks back at him with an expectant smile as if wanting to share his happiness with him. Possibly hoping that one day, when Charles achieves his dream, he will also look at him with a soft smile and be happy with him, too.

God, it must have twisted Charles' heart so badly when he realized that Max genuinely wants to share his joy with him instead of how he expected him to rub it in his face like many others have done to each other and many people believed Max would have done to him. The way Max is so soft and sunny and kind and thoughtful when Charles must have been expecting a merciless killing machine ready to tear him apart both with his words and his on track moves. But the reverse happened and it is so compelling, like, how the hell Max can be so soft for this guy who repeatedly said he hated him in the past as if he wanted to keep the distance as stable as possible. Lol, it is like we are watching an ice castle named Charles crumble irl, and I bet it is a spectacle for the people of the fandom.

And also, the way Charles can be written as someone who thinks he has more to lose if he falls for/accepts his love for Max, because he might feel he is always going to lose to him and never win against him in a meaningful way... (Here, I must say I don't like the fics where they write Max willingly losing to Charles after they become an item. Charles wants a fight and wants it especially from Max, because in his eyes only Max's kind of fight is both "just" and on par with the way he believes what racing is actually about. This is what made him fall in love with the sports and also with Max.) This right here is soooo juicy to pass for the lovers of angst. You can write Max as his mirror that he both wants to smash and also adore like narcissus did, the way you can write them as soulmates in which Charles feels trapped by his fate, the way you can write them as My Better Half whom I hate....

They elicit a huge emotional response in the fans/consumers of fanworks. So, it is only understandable for people to seek out those strong emotions again and again. They induce heart palpitations and it is an addicitive rush of serotonin and dopamine, so who are we to deny ourselves the pleasure of enjoying them?

when she gets to unova... the guilt of beating kieran resurfaces and he pushes her buttons so their battle for the bba championship is a lot more emotional compared to the canon interaction. diona doesn't know how to feel about bringing kieran down even though she was able to accomplish her goal... overall: this is less of a ship and more of an exploration into their interactions and story together and it is AWESOME. i'm more invested in making them fight than i am about them romantically... but in the romance fluff sense, they're just two kids with crushes on each other LOL

really fed up of seeing all of these brocedes comparisons from girlies who clearly don't know their history. yes, many of these drivers are friends, and being teammates could fuck that up, but none of them are truly giving what brocedes did. even pierresteban isn't the same, because it's not the championship fight that killed that friendship, and they're never going to fight for a championship. the only reason that brocedes 'worked' was because they were both very talented drivers who had a mutual psychosexual obsession with each other. it was a shared insanity.

max is one of the most talented drivers to have ever lived, and has a frankly astounding level of self-confidence/self-awareness that lando could only dream of. the second that the british milk boy started trying to play mind games he would lose. i'm not trying to make light of jos and the way he treated max because it was appalling, but max came through that experience as a very grounded individual with a healthy sense of self. after that, i doubt there's anything that could actually affect him in that way.

also, as a side note, the implications that any of these fuckers are as good as nico was is beyond irritating. nico managed to win a race in a genuinely shit mercedes (and would have won in a williams had renault not cheated), lando threw away a victory in a half decent mclaren. danny ric in his flop era won in that mclaren, and lando didn't, so...

Hi anon! I was thinking about early 2022, when the maxsplaining and the leclerfifying really began in earnest and Charles was way ahead in the points. Even when they were being promoted as this great rivalry the only people they really wanted to debrief with was each other (Silverstone 2022 looking at you).

A lot of great Lestappen thinkers have pondered the question of what it would be like if Max and Charles were actually involved in a serious, season long, close championship battle and I think the most popular school of thought is one that posits that their relationship would sour as they’re forced to pull more complicated manoeuvres on track in order to gain points. I disagree with this entirely, I think we’d have flashpoints and moments but if Bahrain 2022, Silverstone 2019 and so many other examples taught us anything, it’s that these two are so fascinating to watch racing because they know each other. They can anticipate each other’s moves quite well and there’s a beauty in racing against an opponent in cars that go at ridiculous speed because you have to trust each other to not pull a move that puts you in danger. Of course there’ll be inchidents but I think they respect/trust each other on track far more than they ever used to.

In terms of their relationship, the media will try their best to push this next big rivalry but I think they’ve arrived at a point where that wouldn’t affect them. There could be moments of frustration and high emotion which get sensationalised but they’ve had these moments in the past and then they’ve forgotten them by the next race.

I always remember when Charles and Max were briefly set up in media as the championship battle in 2022 and Max said that compared to the 2021 battle he was having far much more fun. Sure because he was defending champion, but also, compared to Lewis and Max, Charles and Max know each other and they grew up together (I think this is also the interview where he references them being born just weeks apart).

I think Charles would be more on edge, because it’s his first WDC battle and all, but I don’t see Max being anything other than generally ecstatic that he’s fighting Charles finally.
