Thikse Gompa or Thikse Monastery is a gompa (Tibetan-style monastery) affiliated with the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located on top of a hill in Thiksey approximately 19 kilometres (12 mi) east of Leh in Ladakh, India. It is noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet and is the largest gompa in central Ladakh, notably containing a separate set of buildings for female renunciates that has been the source of significant recent building and reorganisation. . . . #traveling_arte #travelingphotographer #travelingram #traveling #traveling_uk #travelindia #travelindiagram #traveling #leh #thiksaymonastery #buddhism #himalayas #india #travelblogger #travelbloggers #trip #tour #tourist #wonderlust #explorer #incredibleindia #holiday #vacation #monestry #ghumakkad #ghumakkadbilla (at Thiksay Monestry) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-_qCVEpTCm/?igshid=1m4fto2h2337d

A very happy new year 2020 to all the readers of desi Traveler.⠀ For the January 2020 Wallpaper Calendar, I am sharing an image of Thiksey Monastery #Ladadkh,. Thiksey Monastery stands tall at the banks of Indus, the river that gives name to our country India.⠀ An impressive 12 storied structure, Thiksey is said to be resembling the Patola Palace in Lhasa Tibet. Well, I have been outside Thiksey a few times but could never go really inside the monastery, even this time as I had just started climbing it started to rain and we had to abandon our climb and get back. Rather than getting disappointed I simply think I will be visiting the Thiksey monastery once again soon, and hopefully will get a chance to see it from inside.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ ..⠀ .⠀ .⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ #Lehdiaries⠀⠀ ⠀ #NGTIndia⠀⠀ #wallpaper⠀ #calendar⠀ #desi_diaries⠀⠀ #Gompas ⠀⠀ ⠀ #cntgiveitashot⠀⠀ ⠀ #pictureoftheday⠀⠀ ⠀ #magicalLadakh⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #Hipaae⠀ ⠀ #Ladakhtrip⠀⠀ ⠀ #lehladakh⠀⠀ ⠀ #cntgiveitashot⠀⠀ #NGTIndia⠀⠀ #bbctravel⠀⠀ #onassignment⠀ #incredibleindia⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #dslr_official⠀⠀ ⠀ #Mypixeldiary ⠀#IamNikon⠀⠀ #travelphotography⠀ #capturetomorrow⠀ #snowcappedmountains⠀ #TheGrandDragonLadakh⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Check, like follow @desiTraveler & post using #desiTraveler, to be featured on the " UsLee", & original desi Traveler 😀 BTW hamaree koi branch nahi hai....⠀ ⠀ PS: You can download a high res copy of this image from the link in the bio absolutely free as my token of thanks for being a reader of desi Traveler blog (at Thikse Monastery) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6xms7BA4jt/?igshid=1lp79lrg9hitz

Why December is the best time to visit Ladakh
A a lot of people think that a trip to Ladakh isn’t one of the options in the month of December, due to the extremely cold climate. But actually, you have all the reasons to visit it. There’s so much snow. Who doesn’t like snow? Yes, it comes with a lot of challenges; you need to prepare well, pack all those warm clothes, etc. But think about it, isn’t it going to be an adventurous and thrilling experience? Walking through the snow in those winter boots, experiencing snowcapped mountains and it’s all going to be worth it. You must have obviously imagined yourself walking around in the snow just like the Bollywood movies. And, it the time you experience it too. You are just one step closer to booking your tickets to a beautiful place with diverse and vast landscapes, culture, food, and people. Or you can book your Ladakh Tour Package right away at affordable prices.
Tumblr media
Take a flight to Ladakh, and see the mesmerizing view of the Snowy Himalayas from above. Once you disembark, go to visit it for real. Even though many places close down in the winters, you can still find many accommodations that function throughout the year. These attractions might be the same, but their appearances change according to the season. And imagine all that snow all around. All the frozen lakes, snow on every house and tree. It’s so fascinating to even think of it- making it a thrilling and exciting experience of your life.
Tumblr media
You can even use this itinerary as a reference, to just give you an idea of what you would see here:
Day 1: Arrive in Leh: Try and get adjusted to the climate here and then prepare yourself for the journey in the snow.
Day 2: Sightseeing in Leh: pack a lot of water and go visit the Hemis Monastery completely covered in pure white snow. It looks as beautiful as it does in summer. Isn’t it so wonderful to see this place change according to the seasons? The places remain the same, but the appearance changes due to the snow.
Day 3: Sightseeing around Leh: go and visit the Magnetic Hill, it is often said that this hill has a magnetic force that draws vehicles towards it. Villagers who reside there believed in the myth that the deserving people are often chosen by this place and are sent straight to heaven.
Day 4: La-Nubra Valley: You can stay at Diskit or Turtuk. As much as these villages look beautiful in the summer, they look even prettier when there’s snow all around. Just make sure you have all your warm clothes ready for this trip. You don’t want to face those chilly winds there isn’t it.
Day 5: Turtuk-Sumur-Khardung La-Leh: Ladakh has a lot of Tibetan monasteries located at every corner, all beautiful and different from one another. Visit the monastery which is located at Sumur and the Ensa Gompa.
Day 6: The Pangong via Chang La drive: during this drive visit the Hemis and Thikse monasteries
Day 7:  From Pangong Tso to Leh:  Now it’s time for you to return to Leh taking the same route. By this time, you will get used to the temperature there, but make sure you stay warm and have a lot of fluids. Go around exploring in the market, buy Tibetan artefacts, dry fruits, and various other delicacies.
Once you are done with visiting all these places, rest at your hotel, have some good food, if you are a foodie, then winters are the best for you to continue eating as winters make your appetite get excites. You could try Tibetan cuisine during this time. Winters are harsh in Ladakh, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good time to visit this beautiful place. It’s actually the best place if you are seeking for an adventure. Go on, explore around, enjoy the snow, click a lot of pictures and make memories. You don’t have to go to another place to experience snow. Ladakh- known as the land of changing landscapes has it all. You just need to prepare well, pack those warm clothes and get set for your trip. Plan a trip with your best friends and go on an adventure like never before.

Diskit Monastery also known as Deskit Gompa or Diskit Gompa is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery (gompa) in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, northern India.
It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, founder of Gelugpa, in the 14th century.[3][4] It is a sub-gompa of the Thikse gompa.
Lachung Temple and Hundur Monastery are also located nearby, the latter is below the main road near a bridge.[3][4]
The monastery has statue of Cho Rinpoche (Crowned Buddha) in the prayer hall, a huge drum and several images of fierce guardian deities. An elevated cupola of the moanstery depicts a fresco of the Tashilhunpo Monastery of Tibet.
The Monastery administration runs a school, with support from a Non-Government Organization (NGO) known as the "Tibet Support Group", which has computer facilities and teaches science subjects, in English, to Tibetan children of the region.
A popular festival known as Dosmoche or the "Festival of the Scapegoat" is held in the precincts of the monastery in February during the winter season, which is largely attended by people from villages of the Nubra Valley since the other regions in Leh are inaccessible during this period due to heavy snow fall.

Bearing a strong resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa (Tibet), the Thiksey Gompa is one of the most important monasteries of the Gelug sect of Tibetian Buddhism in #Ladakh. It is actually an amalgamation of monasteries, residential quarters for monks, temples, prayer halls and official blocs making it one of the largest such structure in the region, a mighty impressive one at that! On the second day of #NaropaFestival2018, we decided to pay a visit to the gompa before daybreak and witness the morning prayers. The view as we got down at the parking was lovely! #travelblogger #travel #ladakhdiaries #buddhism #india #morning #thikseymonastery #himalayas (at Thikse Monastery) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoWyZ3Zno1a/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=uowev7w0kptj
