Pulptober 16th: Not all Heroes Wear Costumes - Sailor Steve Costigan

I may be stretching it a little here but Steve’s only a merchant sailor and hardly has a uniform. Steve Costigan is, in the vein of Breckenridge Elkins, one of Howard’s ‘strong and cheerful but colossally stupid’ protagonists. If you’re into boxing you’ll probably enjoy his tales, though if you don’t care for the sweet science there’s not much for you here. Arts by Thomas Gianni and the erstwhile Chris Schweizer.

Después del impactante final del torneo All Valley, Terry Silver comienza a expandir el imperio de Cobra Kai con el objetivo de que su estilo de karate “Sin Piedad”, sea el único que quede en pie. Cobra Kai (Season 5)

I came to this season thinking it would be the conclusion of the series. This is a story that should not be dragged unnecessarily because it will lose the hold it has on its audience. At least that is my opinion. But apart from that, I really didn't know what to expect in terms of plot development. I must say that this season was another hit. I watched those 10 episodes in less than 24 hours. It was so good I hadn't realized how long I'd been watching the series until I saw it was almost 2 am last night.

This season can be divided into two halves. The first one is where Terry has the upper hand in his quest to tear down Daniel and Chozen. It is also the part where Johnny focuses on his family and looks for ways for Miguel and Robby to seal the past behind them and move on. Johnny's unique personality comes out in his ways of getting them to face each other and work their differences. I liked seeing him bonding with Robby on their trip to Mexico to find Miguel. It also broke my heart to see Miguel walk away from a violent father and find Johnny right there waiting for him. In the moments that mattered, Johnny was a true father to Miguel. So I like the process of getting Miguel and Robby to become friends. I was happy to see these two young men happy about their parents' news. . .

The second half is about how the adults and teens work together. it was refreshing watching Daniel, Johnny and Chozen work together and become friends. Johnny has matured in this season. He has cleaned his place and has his mind set in taking care of his family and friends. This time Johnny and Daniel are truly collaborating and we can see that also in the teens. I liked that.

This season also has some people from the past make an appearance. Jessica Anderson - who I didn't know was Amanda's cousin and the one that introduced Danny to Amanda - helps Amanda understand why Terry has Daniel so worked up. This is the turning point, where we start moving to the 2nd half of the season. Mike is another example or reminder to Daniel that people do change and mend their ways. Mike was another teen used by evil adults who realized this and moved on. He moves use to the climax of the season.

The fight sequences were good and varied. I also liked how Chozen trained the teens. One of the kids points out how he is a mix of Daniel's and Johnny's teaching method. I think this season was about teaching the teens in the dojo about leadership and what makes a true leader and the importance of working together as a unit.

In terms of character development, Tory is the one that goes through a big change among the teens. She is going through what Robby did last season. It is really hard to see how Kreese uses her and takes advantage of her need of an adult that cares about her. In this season we also see Tory and Sam find a middle ground. In terms of the adults, Johnny feels more centered and collected. At a point in the series, when we see Daniel go to Johnny we see a role switch. It is Johnny who is centered, at peace with himself and his family. His family is his goal and drive and we can see that reflected in his apartment. Daniel in the other hand, looked lost. I think this is important because both understand better each other and are truly able to become friends, they truly moved on and closed the past.

It all looked like it was falling into the right places. By the end of the season, I felt there was closure, a happy ending on its away and then that plot twist at the end!

I don't know if that was a smart move because at some point in this season I was tired of hearing Daniel repeating the same thing - that Cobra Kai was endangering teen in the Valley. If there is a 6th season I will watch it but I think it should've ended on season 5. What do you think?
