Writing with Hands That Don’t Always Cooperate
Some days, writing feels like trying to hold water in a sieve. When your hands ache, or they don’t move the way you want them to, or they just refuse to play along, everything that used to feel effortless suddenly requires strategy. It’s frustrating, it’s infuriating and, let’s be honest, it’s lonely sometimes, too. But I didn’t stop writing, and I won’t. Because my stories still matter, even…

A Look at My Writing Journey
Writing has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Even before I could read or write, I was fascinated by stories. As a kid, I would watch movies endlessly, studying the characters and plotlines. I didn’t realize it at the time, but this shaped me into who I am today.
At first, I thought I wanted to be an actor, but after attending a casting call, I discovered what truly captured my interest wasn’t acting—it was the writing behind it all. The realization that without writers, there would be no stories for actors to bring to life changed everything for me.
Still, I didn’t start writing right away. I was overwhelmed, unsure where to begin, and discouraged by comparing myself to successful writers. In hindsight, that was a mistake. But in 2014, I finally decided to take the leap and start writing.
My First Stories
My early stories were, frankly, terrible. At the time, they felt amazing to produce, but looking back, they make me cringe. However, I kept reading, learning, and practicing, and gradually, I got better. I’m still not a master of writing, but the progress I’ve made is proof that growth takes time.
The Tools I Started With
When I began writing, all I had was paper and a pencil. I’d spend countless hours scribbling away, but unfortunately, I often discarded my ideas, not realizing their potential. Eventually, I got a phone and started using a basic writing app, which made the process faster, but I still fell into the habit of abandoning ideas.
Later, I got a computer and discovered LibreOffice, a free software that served me well when I couldn’t afford other tools. During that time, I also started self-studying writing and business to equip myself with the knowledge I needed to pursue my passion.
The Tools I Use Now
Today, my writing process looks very different. I still use paper and pencil for brainstorming and outlining, but most of my writing happens on my phone using the Word app. I also rely on tools like Grammarly and Copilot to streamline editing and enhance productivity. These tools have been game-changers in simplifying the process.
Editing
If I’m being honest, I despise editing. It’s time-consuming and requires focus, which can be challenging with my ADD. However, tools like Copilot and Grammarly make it more manageable. I always ensure that every word I write is my own—AI assists me, but it doesn’t write my content. It simply helps refine my work.
Generating Story Ideas
Story ideas come naturally to me. I draw inspiration from the world around me, media, and even dreams. I make it a habit to jot down ideas as they come to me, and I often have a backlog of concepts ready to explore. When I feel stuck, research or brainstorming with tools like Copilot helps keep the creativity flowing.
Creating Characters
My characters often take inspiration from real people. I never replicate someone exactly, but I borrow small traits to make them feel realistic. This method helps me create unique and relatable characters.
Lessons I’ve Learned
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned many valuable lessons, including:
- The importance of authenticity and structure.
- The need for organization, like plot outlines and character sheets.
- The value of integrity in writing.
Writing is a continuous learning experience that has helped me grow as a writer and as a person.
My Writing Struggles
I’ve faced numerous struggles, especially with planning and world-building. Learning to create outlines and character sheets has been crucial. While I still have challenges, I keep pushing forward.
My Published Work
I’ve published two books on KDP, both lesbian romances.
1. Finding Hope: A mystery-romance that took longer to write and edit than I’d like to admit. While it has flaws, I’m proud of it as a learning experience.
2. My Second Book: A teen romance about navigating high school and self-acceptance. It’s more polished, thanks to feedback from Quotev readers before publishing.
I’ve also written several short stories, though some, like "The Haunting Secrets of the Past", didn’t turn out as well as I hoped. I may revisit and improve them one day, but for now, I’m focused on creating new, compelling stories.
My Success So Far
I haven’t had much success yet due to limited resources for advertising and promotion, but I’m determined. I believe that with patience and perseverance, my work will eventually take off.
Conclusion
Every writer’s journey is unique, filled with challenges and triumphs. The key is to keep moving forward and believing in your vision. Stay true to your passion, and everything will fall into place.
