Another rainy spring morning has me thinking of all things wet and earthy, so I am reaching for @tokyomilk_ Pretty Rotten.  Pretty Rotten opens with a blast of wet green apples which quickly transforms into the yeasty sour-sweet smell of ... rot. Don't run away yet. This is not so much the smell of death as it is fermentation. It's like a whiff of apple cider before it's ready, or the smell of a bountiful orchard where apples have tumbled from branches and are slowly becoming one with the earth. I really appreciate that this is a true apple and not the neon spunkiness of a Jolly Rancher candy which seems to be the usual apple note in fragrances.  Despite the unconventional opening, Pretty Rotten's final stage is much prettier than it is rotten, becoming a powdery, refined floral that still manages to be interesting. The watery notes in Pretty Rotten are so prominent that I initially thought I was smelling lily of the valley, but consulting the notes listed on Fragrantica, I see that it is in fact rose. On second sniff, I perceive it. It is not a red rose, but a tea rose which reminds us of things that are ancient and have dissolved into a sweet fine dust. Is this something I want to wear every day?
